a deadly stabbing. it's tied to violent street gangs. ktvu's kraig debro tells us it happened yesterday evening in the usually peaceful gerstle park neighborhood. >> reporter: this is b street next to the san rafael community center. you can see down the street there's a 7 eleven on the street and across the street a safeway. it all started here. from here two groups of men in cars drove up a dead end street. a man got out of one of the vehicles bleeding. he struggled to a neighbor's door and asked for help. but he later died. at a hospital san rafael police have not identified a man but a post report says he's 21 years old. minutes before the knock on the door several people in cars here on the 600 block of b street were seen chasing one another. >> right prior to this call we'd had a couple reports of two cars and some people armed possibly with bats or sticks down on b street and in the gerstle park area. >> triangles. >> reporter: cars the men were riding in ended up on wood street. police believe the lead car didn't know it was a dead end street and that's why he went on wood. the man who would later die either got out on his own or forced out of the vehicle. he went to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. two other people believed to be part of the melee showed up at a hospital to be treated for injuries and police are now questioning them. police say alert neighbors gave them detailed descriptions of both vehicles. one was stopped later. the driver detained and questioned. there's a statewide apb out for the other vehicle. that is described as a white pontiac california license plate 3ulg274. in addition the neighbor on woods street who encountered the man bleeding wanted to talk to people on b street to see what they saw in terms of that are investigating this case as a murder-suicide. and some of the students we talked to on campus say they've heard it was a love triangle. the shooting happened wednesday night in the tenth street parking garage. police say the three victims are connected to the school, but they haven't said if they were students as they try to find each of the victims' family. the deaths bring the total number of homicides in san jose to 20 now. that's what the city had for all of last year. san jose mayor chuck reed says san jose is still one of the safest cities despite that spike in homicide rates. more money from washington d.c. is heading to santa cruz county to help in tsunami recovery efforts. the labor department announced it has awarded santa cruz county millions of dollars to hire temporary workers to assist in clean up and repairs. the money will also provide badly needed jobs in a county with a 14% unemployment rate. the announcement came yesterday two months to the day after that destructive tsunami ripped through santa cruz harbor. time now 5:03. pg&e is writing checks. they're reimbursing cities and counties who responded to the san bruno disaster. eight people were killed, 38 homes destroyed in last september's disaster. emergency responders rushed in from all over the bay area to help out. well, according to the examiner 60 applications have been filed by various cities and counties seeking more than $4 million in reimbursements. less than an hour from now top executives from the five biggest oil companies are set to face some tough questions at a hearing on capitol hill. coming up at 5:15 we're going to have a live report from washington d.c. with the outrage among some democrats over subsidizing the oil companies while they take in record profits. time now 5:04. in just a couple hours the white house will announce a plan to beef up cyber security. reportedly the plan calls for better protection for systems that operate very important infrastructure like power plants and the electric grid. federal agencies will also increase their monitoring of their computer networks. also companies would have to tell their customers when there's been a security breach that could possibly lead to identity theft. the giants fan brutally beaten outside dodgers stadium could soon move to a hospital closer to home. bryan stow's family says his condition has stabilized. family members are considering moving him from his los angeles hospital room to the ucsf medical center in san francisco. that move could come as early as next week. now the 43-year-old paramedic from santa cruz is still in a coma six weeks after that attack. time now 5:05. another protest rally by angry teachers is planned for later today right outside the wells fargo bank in downtown oakland. they're demanding that banks pay more taxes. now the tax protest by oakland teachers started yesterday. they say many banks and other large corporations don't pay their fair share. and they say higher taxes on banks would help reduce california's education budget crisis. ac transit bus fares are going up. the hikes were scheduled to start august 1st with a 10-cent increase for adults and 5 cents for youths, seniors and disabled. ac transit says the increase will bring in about $2 million, but that will not be enough to close the agency's $15 million budget gap. as a result [ laughter ] >> besides that. >> second best. >> okay. let's go out and take a look at the traffic. i think i took them by surprise. let's go out and take a look at east shore freeway westbound as you head to the macarthur maze. no major problems here as you head out to the macarthur maze and continue to the bay bridge toll plaza. if you're an early commuter, i think you should like what you see for this early drive to work. a lot of people get up early because they don't want to be in traffic. and right now traffic is doing very nicely. this is a look at 280 northbound in san jose. that traffic looks good all the way up to highway 17 with no major problems. no problems on the 17 coming over the mountains. it's 5:07. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. we have a little bit better weather today but it's still going to be partly sunny, breezy and i'd say still cool for some. but at least we'll get a little bit of a bump up in some of these temps. the system that's moving into the north is stuck. and it's not -- doesn't seem to want to move right now. dropping down which will start to influence us more likely on saturday night into sunday. and then again on monday and tuesday. now it's a slow process but it's on its way. first part of that system came in yesterday. spokes in the wheel keep coming in enhancing our cooling trend here. so fog and sun. i shouldn't say little. it will be a big cooling trend by sunday. slightly warmer today. a ridge many democrats say have to stop. >> reporter: senate democrats say oil companies are making record profits they don't need subsidies from american taxpayers. democrats have introduced a break to eliminate the tax breaks saving americans $21 billion over ten years. >> we're here to say enough already to big oil. you're doing just fine on your own and you don't need the taxpayer giving you an extra handout to help. >> reporter: but oil executives will fight back this morning saying it's unfair to single out their industry from a tax break available to all manufactures. saying they're discriminatory and counterproductive. republicans argue they don't even make economic sense. >> the left always says we want to raise taxes and they somehow think that's going to lower gas price? that logic is just ridiculous. >> reporter: live coverage of the start of the hearing during my next update in about an hour. for now live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. overnight nato air strikes again hit libyan leader moammar gadafi's compound in tripoli. it was the second nato attack on tripoli in 48 hours. several sites in the compound were hit as part of nato's effort to weaken the libyan leader's resistance to a 3- month-old rebellion. doctors in the hospital say at least two people were killed in those air strikes. the nato air strikes hit just hours after moammar gadafi appeared on state tv. it was the libyan leader's first public appearance since the nato air strike killed his youngest son and three grandchildren two weeks ago. footage shows him meeting with triable leaders in a hotel. time now 5:14. governor jerry brown is back working at his office again. the governor had been working from home after having his skin cancer removed from his nose later last month. stitches were removed on tuesday but still has to wear a bandage. he was treated for a basil cell carcinoma. highly curable skin cancer but reconstructive surgery was needed because it was on his nose. we're now hearing from some members of congress who have seen the osama bin laden death photos. >> there are 15 pictures. the first 12 were taken in the compound right -- obviously right aft incident took place. so they're pretty grueling. the other three were taken on the ship and included the burial at sea. >> now members of senate and house committees that deal with intelligence of military matters have been invited to see the photographs at the c.i.a. headquarters in virginia but they're not allowed to take any copies of those photos. oakland police asking for the public's help to identify two possibly suspects in a deadly shooting at an auto zone store. take a look at this surveillance photo. it was taken outside the store on december 19, 2009. one man is believed to be in his 20s. he's 6'" tall with a thin build. the second man is also believed to be in his 20s. he's about 5'8" with a thin build as well. now police say the two men may be tied to the fatal shooting of a 59-year-old security guard. san jose state student has reportedly settled a lawsuit against the city's police department after he accused an officer of excessive force. now the case stems from an incident caught on cell phone video two years ago. that shows an officer striking him while trying to arrest him. the 22-year-old sued for $6 million. the mercury news quoted one source as saying the amount of the settlement is $225,000. your time is now 5:16. a plea of guilty in the case of the man charged with trying to kill his wife as he drove -- sped along with her clinging to the roof of his minivan. 36-year-old christopher carol sentenced to five years in state prison. police say carol's wife stood in front of his van when he tried to drive away after an argument in february. police say carol's wife climbed on to the hood of the car as he sped off. he eventually stopped in pleasanton. carol's wife was treated for hypothermia and scrapes. the bay area is getting some high mark. a new report came out today that looked at which u.s. cities provide commuters with the best access to public transportation. the new brookings institute report says the san jose, santa clara, sunny vale area ranked number two in the nation. that report says 96% of working age residents in the south bay live near a transit stop. now san francisco, oakland, fremont metro area was ranked 16th. number one on the list, honolulu. interesting. all right. 5:17 is the time. let's go back to sal. it's bike to workday. so people should be careful you might see more bikes on the road, pam, i know what you're thinking on this because we're all thinking the same thing. just be careful as you go to the bay bridge toll plaza you're obviously not going to see bikes there but i'm talking about getting to the freeway on local roads you will see bikes. you should be careful and give them a break. this is a look at interstate 80 north and southbound. traffic is moving well. we hope people who take their that fog we had yesterday. partly to mostly sunny today. more clouds to the north though as a weak cold front's coming in. the sea breeze still in place. it's going to be a breezy day and the cooling trend is in full force. we might get a little bump up today into friday but the trend on the weekend is to bring it way down. i mean on sunday we'll be a good 15 or 20 degrees below normal for this time of year. weak cold front slicing through into the northern part of the state has moved light rain up to the northern parts of the city. not a lot just a little bit. the mere fact that it's there items out of my room. >> well, a judge dismissed his drug case last week. police chief sir has launched an investigation. the f.b.i. is investigating eight other san francisco police officers accused the richmond public health center has died from legion air's disease. he's the second worker at the hospital to contract the disease in the past three years. contra costa county public health director brown water for the last day and the 36-inch transmission line that feeds water into napa ruptured on tuesday causing all of that. an estimated one million gallons of water spill into a field on foster road. the incident will reportedly cost the city about $25,000. now crews are expected to refill the repaired line to repair the line overnight. people may still experience low water pressure and cloudy water, but the city is saying the water is safe to drink. gang violence in an unlikely spot. the deadly attack that is shaking up a usually peaceful bay area neighborhood. and a bay area downtown san rafael. kraig. >> reporter: yeah, pam, right next to the san rafael community center you're looking at b street right now behind me. you can see there's a 7 eleven on the street and safeway. a mixture of residences and businesses. this all happened yesterday shortly before 5:00 p.m. the people who live and work on the street reported that they saw two cars chasing one another and the people in those cars had sticks and knives. again happened yesterday shortly before 5:00 p.m. one of them may have also had a knife. one of the people in the car may have had a knife after being spotted by several people on b street the chase turned down wood street. wood street is a dead end. one man in the car got out or was forced out of the car. he stumbled to the door of a home, knocked on the door and asked for help. police and paramedics arrive but police who identify only as a 21-year-old man died later at a hospital. >> they're all adults. we're not releasing any names at this point. the victim himself was a 21- year-old man and the others are 20 and 21. >> reporter: police say alert neighbors gave them detailed descriptions of both vehicles. in fact, one was stopped later. the driver was detained and questioned. you saw talk about two other people those two other people police presume were in the other vehicle. they were dropped off at a hospital. they had minor charges. now the search is underway for the mother's ex-boyfriend. police were desperately searching for 31-year-old jane marin and her daughter after receiving reporting that the child was being abused in a home in campbell. last night officers tracked them down at a supermarket parking lot in san jose. >> our investigators were able to develop some information as to the possible whereabouts of her and her mom. when they responded to the area they did spot them in a parking lot at which time they took them safely into custody. >> now police are still looking for this man. the woman's ex-boyfriend, 35- year-old george rodriguez. at this point officers are not releasing the details on the child abuse investigation fearing it could jeopardize the case. but the little girl, again, is in novato being warned about a dangerous homemade explosive called a bottle bomb. the explosive devices are made from drink containers filled with drain o. reports of these devices in novato in the information to me and other parents that are here. >> now police say so far no one in novato's been hurt by a bottle bomb, but officers did arrest a group of teenagers in january from making and setting off drain-o bombs in an open space. hundreds of bay area commuters will be trading in their car keys for bike helmets today. it is the annual bike to work day. ktvu's claudine wong is in marin county, one of the places where there are bike stations set up for them. and what a lovely commute people will have across the golden gate bridge on a bike. >> reporter: it is. they are trying to make temperatures on the cool side even though we'll get more sunshine today patchy low clouds kind of chewed up. we still have some out there. the sonoma county airport says fog of all things. it's a cooler pattern because we have the on shore wind. patchy low clouds. sunny to partly cloudy and breezy. temperatures 50s, 60s and a few low 70s. now far enough away from the coast you'll get some maybe mid- 70s but you have to go rather far inland. the cooling trend continues as we see the temperature trend started yesterday and continue all the way into sunday. there could be some highs on sunday especially up in mendocino county that don't get out of the 50s. record lows possible by monday. 49 fairfield. 40s for napa, san rafael, livermore. if you have some clouds above you probably in pattern today has slightly bit more sunshine, but then as we head to the weekend saturday looks okay and rain moves in on sunday morning. very windy but i think the big news will be how cool it's 100th running of the bay to breakers race kicks off on sunday. hopefully no rain in san francisco. but there are some major changes. in past years the event has been an excuse for many people to let loose and party. but police are cracking down this year with a zero tolerance for alcohol and public drunkenness. there will be check points along the route to see if people are registered but that's not stopping some people. >> they will be escorted off the course. >> i'm just going to get a big group of friends together and kind of join up behind the runners and just walk the course. >> race organizers say registered runners will get a special centennial medal after they cross the finish line. but what that medal looks like is being kept secret until race day. now we have more details relatively on the cool side but slightly warmer inland. all right. welcome back. good morning to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following. today san jose police may tell us the names of the three people killed in a wednesday night shooting in a parking garage on the san jose state university campus. that shooting is being investigated as a murder- suicide. bryan stow, the giants fan brutally beaten outside dodgers stadium, could be moved soon to a hospital closer to his home. bryan stow's family is considering moving him from his l.a. hospital room to the ucsf medical center in san francisco. and just 15 minutes from now in washington d.c. top oil company executives could face some pretty tough questioning in a hearing. some democrats on capitol hill are calling for an end to tax incentives for the oil companies. especially since those companies are reporting record profits. this morning thousands of people living along the swollen mississippi river are deciding if they should leave their homes. they're waiting to see if the government decides to release water into their neighborhoods. holly is in sixberg, mississippi this morning where it's already too late for many houses. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yeah, i'm standing in yet another parking lot here along the mississippi river. we are in slicksberg. the water is already close to five feet above flood stage here. that has many people concerned because the water here is not supposed to crest until next thursday. continuing it relentless flow south. in louisiana where memories of the floods caused by hurricane katrina are still fresh, officials are faced with a difficult decision. opening the spillway could spare baton rouge and new orleans from damage, but with flood populated areas in the basin. >> our hearts go out to everybody downstream. this is monument tailwater. never been seen before. >> reporter: the spillway with open if the river's flow reaches 1.5 million feet of water per cubic second. it's currently at 1.6. the governor is advising people to plan ahead. >> that's what i'm advising. act if the spillway -- act as if that decision was coming be prepared. i don't want people waiting whether they need to make plans or build the levees. >> reporter: president obama signed a disaster declaration wednesday. 14 counties are already eligible for assistance. it's already too late to save some. while efforts are underway to shore up flood defenses, the worst could be yet to come. and, pam, about 1,000 people in this area have already been evacuated. they expect that another close to 4,000 could be displaced by some time next week. back to you in the studio. >> all right. holly fir for there live in mississippi. thank you for that update. time now 5:47. u.s. investigators finding out more about osama bin laden's activities by reading his private journal. that journal was among the documents seized at bin laden's compound. in it he writes about advising al qaeda groups to hit other cities besidings new york like los angeles and also attacking trains as well as airplanes. the goal he writes is to kill as many americans as possible in each attack. a new poll out shows most americans believe killing osama bin laden was the right thing to do. the associated press poll shows 86% of the nation approves of the way the u.s. handled that raid. only 6% disapprove. and 87% say killing bin laden during the raid was justified. 9% said it was not. in spain thousands of people spent the night outdoors after the worst earthquakes in 50 years. at least eight people died in the city when it was hit with two earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.1 and 4.5. crowds of people bundled up and slept in the main plaza too afraid to be inside. boy, take a look at that. a camera caught large chunks of stone and brick falling from the facade of a church during the second earthquake. look at those cars covered with debris. roofs crashed in. it sits near a fault line that registers thousands of earthquakes every year but most are too small to be felt. >> that was not the case there. >> a lot of damage. time now 5:49. sal 80 that traffic is going to be okay driving out to richmond. no problems on the richmond bridge. and across in marin county yesterday we had kind of a bad day so far it's starting off well there. it's 5:50. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. little better today but still kind of cool and breezy. temperatures just a couple degrees. a cold front moving into the north but we'll rebound because we chew up some of that low cloudiness even though there's patchy clouds out there not as widespread as yesterday. this will be the first of what looks to be many cold fronts getting progressively stronger as we head into sunday, monday and tuesday. today though 40s and 50s. upper 40s or mid-50s. cloud cover means mid-50s. redwood city, hayward. some clearing in those clouds with 40s. west-southwest from the golden gate and sfo over delta it's still an on shore breeze. that's not going anywhere. front that's going through is washing out. the mere fact it's there will keep us from warming up. here comes our big system for the weekend. sunday will be the main day. so if you have any plans you might want to have a plan b ready to go. saturday should be all right in advance of that system. be a south wind. so some sun then clouds roming in later. cool to mild. any time we get a south wind that can be a rather mild pattern this time of year but the wind will pick up and temperatures will plunge. i mean we'll see highs about 20 degrees below average. and it does look like morning rain sunday morning rain. fog, sun, breezy, little warmer today. chilly morning for some. 60s to low 70s from coast to bay mid-60s and a few low 70s inland. did go slightly warmer antioch brentwood. oakland 65. lafayette. alamo, danville, pleasanton all low 70s. mid-70s santa clara valley. woodside in there. upper 50s low 60s coast and san bruno to san francisco. not much warmer san mateo, about 65, 66. about the same friday and then here comes clouds on saturday. cloud it up sunday and temperatures really cool down. possibility of thundershowers as well. oh, boy. just a few minutes ago the latest numbers on the retailers. sales were up one-half a percent in april to nearly $390 billion. that's the tenth consecutive month of sales gains, but economists expected an even bigger increase. so the retail stocks could get hit today. economists say what sounds like good news about foreclosures is actually a signal of a lingering problem. the foreclosures dropped from 5% from march but analysts say that's because it now takes longer for a bank to repossess a home. california by the way has the third highest foreclosure rate in the country. one of every 240 homes are in the foreclosure process. time is now 5:52. looking for answers after sharks are found dead along the shores of the bay area. what detailed examinations of the remains have revealed. plus slapping handcuffs on the woman known as the granny bandit.
