thank you for joining us on this friday morning i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. steve knows all about the friday weather. >> steve, come on you always right. >> oh stop that. cool by the coast. fog is filling in there. it's already in the 60s for lows. there is a couple indications temperatures could come down one or two degrees. it will still be in the its or -- in the 90s or 100s away from the coast. traffic is moving along nicely on southbound 101. also on the east shore freeway things are getting a little busier as you head west. let's go back to the desk. time now 6:01. in overnight news oakland police spent the past several hours investigating oakland's latest homicide. alex savidge is in the area of 19th street of san pablo where two people were shot. what do you know alex? >> reporter: one of the people that was shot here at this location was killed. that is where two men were sitting in a parked car when someone came up and opened fire. this happened right on san pablo at 19th street. you can see this is market where this all took place. police goth here and -- got here and found several shell casings. the driver hit in the chest and the arm. he drove himself and his passenger to highland hospital and the passenger eventually died from his injuries. in the meantime there was another unrelated shooting we understand at oakland that happened early this morning. this one was on the 7600 block of deer wood. in that case the information is verylimited. we do know the man was shot during a robbery. in addition to those two shootings early this morning there were also two other nonfatal shootings where people were hit by gunfire in the city of oakland early this morning. but sustained nonlifenning injuries. in all of these cases oakland police have not announced any arrests. live in oakland alex savidge. we also want to show you new video. an suv on fire just hours ago in oakland. this happened at 98th avenue. something exploded while they were putting out the flames. luckily no one was hurt. the fire was put out in a couple minutes. still no word on how the fire started or who owned that suv. the chevron fire investigation could begin as early as today but first cal osha has to give the green light. there are still questions about chevron's decision not to shut down the number four crude unit after a worker spotted a leak two hours before the fire. the chronicle reports that installation around a leaking pipe may have caused chevron officials to miscalculate the scope of the problem. bay area air quality officials say they made a mistake when reporting test results from the refinery fire. they rocked 23 compounds originally said they did not exceed state levels or pose a significant health risk. but a ucsf health expert reviewed the data. he noted one compound that can irritate the eyes, nose, and lungs. >> did exceed the reference exposure level. >> meantime a particle sampling that began at midnight after the fire is still being analyzed. results of those should be ready in a few weeks. in about three hours a health center shall open in richmond. if you already filed a claim by phone, you don't need to visit the center for help. chevron says it plans to company sate people for medical expenses and property damage. here are the details on the help that is opening. it's located at the nevin community center at 598 nevin avenue. the center will also be open on saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon. coming up at 6:30 we will go live to richmond for moron a -- for more on a new report filed by chevron. you can find more videos and pictures from the refinery fire at ktvu.com. just about 6:04. a gunman wearing an afghan military uniform opened fire on them. the three men killed were all special forces members. they were overseeing training of taliban police. then this comes a day after the u.s. condemned a suicide bombing that killed four americans. coming up at 6:15 we'll bring you a live report from washington, d.c. on why these latest attacks are so alarming. happening now families lining up in san jose for a backpack giveaway. ktvu channel 2 reporter matt keller is out there. good morning, matt. >> good morning. you can see some of the choices they get this morning. this is for the kindergarten students. it's very colorful. you've got the hello kitty. you've got princess ones. you have avengers. dora the expirerrer. all these here and begun awe different anales. they will be handing -- we are joined by the development director here. jay, we have so many bark packs here. what is the need in the community for these backpacks and school supplies? 17 the traffic there looks pretty good. on the peninsula highway 101 and 280 we mentioned that off to a nice start. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning. fog filling in. it's not going to help inland areas. there could be a couple degrees cooling but i don't think it will matter too much. still upper 90s to near 100 degrees. very shallow fog bank. very low. dense fog by the coast. it was off the coast for awhile but starting to work its way in. extremely warm air. actually the breeze has been picking up at travis. i think forecast models cooled things off. i didn't see it a couple hours ago but it's starting to show itself now. it went from 9 miles an hour to 14. 50s and 60s ons temps -- on the temps. tropical clouds continue to work their way up around the high pressure system. maybe southern monterey county out to the valley definitely unin the citier -- up in the sierra nevada. looks like high pressure is too strong for today. it might back off a little bit by sunday. patchy fog filling in on the coast. time 6:09. very unusual guests about this big are staying at a hotel in san francisco. they didn't just fly in but the hotel is hoping these little guys don't check out any time soon. >> a new cell phone service bill is one step closer to law and all began with a de-- began by a decision with bart. >> and now a san francisco church closing its doors from. qnñpk time now 6:12. now closing its doors to events by outside groups. now that decision comes after the archdiocese said some events got out of hand. you are looking a the the switch hitters parishes because it cannot control the content. a major veterans childrenty is facing serious allegations this morning. california attorney general is -- reports show that the director misused millions of dollars in private donations for hefty pensions. other perks include $80,000 in golf memberships for board members. a man in an afghan military uniform killed three troops today in afghanistan. as alison burns reports it's the latest in a series of what is being called green on blue attacks. >> with are seeing more attacks where the attackers are dressed as afghan security forces. in this case a man in an afghan military uniform killed three u.s. troops today in southern afghanistan. it's the third attack on americans this week from afghans they are training to take over the countries security. so far 30 coalition troops have been killed in such attacks this year according to the associated press. a suicide bomber also killed three high ranking u.s. troops wednesday. including kevin griffith from colorado. the taliban is claiming responsibility. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:15. the state senate is expected to approve a bill that forbids government agencies from cutting off cell phone service without a court order. it's a response to when bart blocks cell phone service during a demonstration last august. that led to very hot protests and also comparisons between bart and middle east dictatorships. the law would require a judge to issue a court order based on probable cause before cell phone signals could be blocked. if you use bart you've may have noticed something you have not seen in awhile. 169 of the escalators are working today. that is 96% reliability rate and a big improvement over the 77% that we're working back in may. it reassigns six technicians to increase the number of working escalators. we are learning more about the strategy defense lawyers may use in the colorado theater shooting. they have repeatedly told a judge that james holmes is mentally ill and tried to get help. legal experts say this could set the stage for an insanity defense. main purpose of the hearing is to consider a media request to unseal court documents. the judge is expected to rule on that request by monday. u.s. government has decided it won't bring criminal charges against goldman sachs. they were ascussed of bidding against the same mortgage securities. but the justice department say there is is not enough evidence to prosecute the case but could decide to prosecute if more evidence is uncovered. the number of hospital patients in california that develop possibly deadly infections is being under reported. the bay citizen reports that is according to a study conducted by state public health officials. they reportedly looked at 2011 patient records from 100 hospital. very complicated instructions apparently contributed to it being under reported. hospital administrators say that updating computer systems could help improve that problem. a san francisco hotel has some very unusual guests right now this morning. look at the middle of your screen. six baby owls right there peeking out. they were born at san francisco airport marriott waterfront hotel. six weeks ago. they are now making the 11th floor balcony there their new home. their parents by the way fly by every day to feed the baby owls. the hotel they don't want the birds to move. and they have become a very popular hotel attraction. workers are even handing out stuffed owls to hotel guests. >> they are so the traffic is moving along pretty well on interstate 880 right near oakland or here in oakland from san leandro to downtown. it looks pretty good. so does 580 westbound. this mornings commute is looking pretty good on the upper deck of the bay bridge. we had a stalled vehicle reported at fremont street. looks okay to me on that upper deck getting into san francisco. we spoke of hayward and 880 southbound traffic does look pretty good as you drive to fremont. if you're driving into the santa clara valley so far so good. speaking of 101 it's a nice drive to the airport in case you're trying to catch a flight. 6:18 let's go to steve. thank you. some fog. but it's mainly confined to the coast. or a little bit around the bay. inland it will be hot. a couple hints it might be a couple degrees cooler. also tropical clouds up toward the sierra nevada. for us inland temps are in the 90s to 100-degrees. 60 at noon. 63 at 3:00. it will be a little breezy and cool. a lot of the tropical clouds right there very, very close. west, southwest 14 has been picking up in the last couple of hours in travis. we'll see if that holds. 50s and 60s on the lows. some locations are very mild. some are kind of cool. santa rosa being one. it just looks like a pattern that is stuck here for a couple of days. cooler weather should kick in by sunday. if you're by the coast it will be fog and sun. case. the ftc says google track the millions to use apples safari browser. walmart and star bucks are being fined for labor practices in chile. starbucks must by $25,000 for discrimination against [ male announcer ] "the bourne legacy." 6:23 a problem for nasa yesterday while they tested a half million dollar moon lander at the kennedy space center. the prototype only went up six feet in the air and crashed to the ground and burst into flames like that. project manager says they will remove some of the memory devices off of it and try to figure out what happened. we have new information on the story we brought you live yesterday morning. the family of a 13-year-old boy killed in a drive by shooting says he was not a known gang member like the police say he was. the young man was walking home when he was shot. police say they believe the shooting is related to gang violence. the family is saying he's never been part of any gang activity. police in sunnyvale have new surveillance videos of three people wanted in connection to a bold robbery. the suspects had a strategy the police say a woman was the first to approach a coin shop. a female employee unlocked the door but when she turned her back two masked gunmen came through. police say the robbers tied the employees hands while they ransacked the store. they escaped in a white nissan but set it on fire in a parking garage. and escaped in another vehicle. here's another sketch of the female accomplice. police are trying to figure out if she was involved in any other similar crimes american sprinter kept running despite breaking his leg. my ole broke his left -- mitchell broke his left leg while running. every step he said he was in tears because of the pain but he didn't want to let down his teammate. the u.s. qualified for this afternoon's finals but he will be cheering his teammates on from the stands while in a walking boot and crutches. the bay area remains a big winner in the oh -- in the olympics. that team has seven bay area players. and for the first since 1956, two americans won gold and silver in the decathlon. later today san francisco shannon roberry competes in the 1500-meter women's finals. we have 90 medals followed by china with 80. then russia, great britain, and germany. 6:26. sal, you ready to take care of the folks now? >> i'm ready. we don't have a lot to do right now any way. we are starting off the morning very well. let's go out and take a look at san jose traffic. northbound 280 looks good getting up to highway 17. the south bay freeways are doing very well. this is a nice looking drive on 680 and 580. now let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. fog by the coast. temperature there is really won't change much. inland will still be hot. maybe a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. not much of change saturday. it looks like cooler weather begins to work its way in on sunday. 6:27. cleaning up after the chevron refinery fire. the health precautions officials say you should take around your property. >> a string of shootings early this morning across the city of oakland. one person dead, several other people wounded we'll tell you the latest on the search for the shooters. >> also the opening bell is about to ring on wall street. pam will have the early stock numbers. welcome back. a lot of kids over there on the nasdaq. they are a community based education that combine education along with activity. ringing the bell there. and you might recognize little symbol over on the new york stock exchange. manchester united soccer. a bit popular around the world. [ laughter ] they are going public. today. they are celebrating that. going public on the exchange. haven't heard really good analyst comments about them as an invest the. we will watch. >> we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news it's a friday august 10th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. there was gunfire overnight in oakland. two of the victims just sitting in a car. alex savidge is in the area of 19th street and san pablo avenue where there is still remanence of the shooting that can be seen hours later. alex. >> reporter: good morning. two people hit by gunfire. one of them killed. they were sitting in a parked car. this happened on san pablo right at 19th street pit. it all took place right in front of this market. if we take a look up here there is a surveillance camera that potentially could have captured some of what took place. police got here early this morning. they found a number of shell casings on the street. apparently the shooter came up to that parked car and simply opened fire. the driver of the car was hit in the chest and the arm. he ended up driving himself and his passenger to highland hospital. the passenger suffered far more serious injuries and he eventually died from those gunshot wounds. we talked to a man that lives above this shooting scene. he said he woke up to the sun of gunfire. >> all of a sudden just heard five or six very pop pop pop. almost sounded like fire works. this was right outside of our window. i was very startled. when i looked outside, i didn't see anything. >> reporter: oakland police tell me there were three other unrelated shootings across the city this morning including this one on the 7600 block of deer wood. in that case a man was shot during some type of a robbery. he's still alive at last check. all of those other shootings that happened early this morning ended with the victim suffering nonlife threatening injuries and thus far oakland police have not announced any arrests related to the four shootings. we are live this morning in oakland alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are investigating a stabbing that we first told you about at 4:30 this morning. police say they received a call early this morning that a man was suffering from serious injuries. he was taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. but police say they had to block off a quarter mile of mclaughlin avenue to clean up the very messy crime scene. the street is back open. so far police do not have any information on the suspect or motive. 6:32. continuing coverage on the chevron refinery fire. a new help center opens in a couple hours to help the people effected. claudine wong joining us live from the help center on nevin avenue. people are already showing up. right? >> reporter: that is right, dave. the first person already in line here opinion the gentleman over here is john high schoolway. we pan over you can see the front doors. they are not actually open until 9:00 this morning. he said he just wanted to get here early. we asked him a couple minutes ago why he is here. >> about 7:00 that is when my side started hurting. right here. and my friend couple hours later side started hurting in the same exact spot. that is all that night night. when i woke up my nose is all clogged and other problems. >> reporter: he's uninsured he is hoping to get help from chevron today. in the meantime we are getting a look at a first report filed by chevron. it's a 72 hour report. goes through what happens, who was notified and when. that report says in addition to chemicals measured in the air unknown amount of hydrocarbon was come busted but says analysis reports have no adverse air impact. despite their earlier claims there were no significant health risks. one official says they made a mistake when it comes to acrolein. >> it did exceed the reference exposure level set by the state of california. >> reporter: other tests still coming in. particles should be analyzed. chevron is working on a 30 day report. hoping to begin its investigation as well is osha. the health center opens its doors at 9:00 a.m.. live here in richmond claudine wong. >> health officials say you should clean anything exposed to the refinery fire. use soap and water. wash out outside furniture and barbecue grills. crews are also cleaning up city parks and playgrounds. it's been the biggest test of power grids. they issued a rare statewide alert asking everyone to cut down on their power for the next few days. a problem at the nuclear power plant is putting a further strain on the states power supply. you are being asked to avoid using excess power from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. demand for electricity are both highest during those periods. a electronic store is out of hundreds of thousands of dollars of apple merchandise following a bold burglary. three people broke into the store just after midnight on wednesday. the thieves returned twice the same night. investigators say they made off with $163,000 worth of ipods, ipads, andiphones. police are warning people to be awar of apple products sold online. when students in novato go back to school in the fall you will see extra eyes watching them. crews are installing surveillance cameras in two of the cities main high schools. the cameras will be in parking lots and hallways and other public areas. the school district says the $180,000 project is aimed at preventing theft and vandalism perform allegations of hazing. five local high school students kicked off their football team. the criminal charges that may possibly face and the current disagreement about the schools punishment as well. thousands of people are expected in san francisco today for the first day of outside lands. ktvu channel 2 reporter paul chambers is joining us bad news for other events. good morning, paul. >> good morning pam. take a look behind me. empty park, empty stage. in a matter of hours that will all change. the music will start at noon and gates will open at 11:00. now about 195,000 people are expected to attend this three- day music extravaganza. >> last year alone it was $1.4 million in rent that went directly to the recreation and parks department. and help us get through these tough budget times. >> reporter: that is great for the parks department but not for smaller groups that use golden gate park for years. some events are being canceled because of rising city fees. although jimmy's old car picnic is a go this year, some feel the city is putting profits before the people. >> five years ago it was 1500. now it's 15,000. i'm not sure why it needs to be that much. >> reporter: park officials say renting venues can cost up to $50,000. a majority of that money goes to protecting the parks vegetation and hiring police for public safety. this event isn't the only thing going on. the giants and niners are in town. coming up in any next report i'll tell you ways to get around town safely and avoid the crowds. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers. we have posted the complete music lineup for this weekend. if you're tempted to go. and there is a lot of useful information for the festival. time now you have 38. sal is back. everybody behaving out there? [ grunts ] [ male announcer ] the wireless receiver, only from at&t. get a free wireless receiver with a qualifying u-verse plan. rethink possible. good morning. some fog on the coast but inland mostly sunny. it will be hot away from the coast. it will be cool by it. >> good morning, to you. here's a quick look at the top stories we follows for you right now at 6:44. police in san jose investigating reports of an early morning stabbing. one man was seriously hurt but is expected to survive. so far there is no word on any suspects or motive. and there is new video to show you. suv engulfed in flames in oakland. this happened just hours ago near 98th avenue. now no one was hurt and an investigation continues into how the fire started and who owned that vehicle. and a new help center will open this t morning in richmond to help people effected by monday's chevron refinery fire. if you already filed a complaint by phone you don't have to go down to the help center. it's locate add the nebraska -- at the nevin community center. developing news at this hour. there is heavy police activity in the north bay. deputies with the marin county sheriffs office have converged at the juvenile hall in san rafael. they will not comment about reports about a possible escape but they have brought in canine units to conduct a search. we have a news crew heading to the scene. we'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available. also happening now it is time to get ready to head back to school. ktvu channel 2 reporter matt keller is in san jose at a backpack giveaway. matt. >> reporter: good morning. this is a big payoff here at the sacred heart community service. you can see the backpack here all hung up here. the girls are on the left. the boy backpacks are on the right. and of course the organizers will hand them out today at 10:00 this morning. some people have been lining up since last night for their appointments. now this year the organization is giving away the most backpacks in its history. 2452. they believe -- just because they don't have the researches to purchase the supplies. they have been collecting donations for months. >> all throughout all of our programs here at sacred heart we are seeing record levels of demand. that is reflected by also what we see here with the backpacks. so many children need help to get started right at school. >> each child will get a backpack filled with supplies. older students will get a usb memory card and scientific calculator. you can see some of the backpacks for the kindergarten students. they also have $25 gift card for the kids to buy shoes. reporting life in san ho -- reporting live in san jose matt keller. san francisco's muni system is under attack after a scathing report released thursday criticizes them for a practice known as switch backs. passengers are forced to get off the bus or train before it reaches the end of the run and wait for the next one. the report says muni officials show a dallas disregard for the welfare of riders overall in their use of switch backs. the grand jury report recommends muni consult with other agencies that don't rely on them. our time is 6:47. happening right now in wisconsin mourn earns of last sunday -- mourners of last sunday's shooting are gathering at a sikh temple. this is from oak creek wisconsin. there is hugs and a lot of emotion there. a memorial service for the victims of sunday's mass shooting. the gunman wade michael page killed six people and wounded three others before killing himself. hundreds of mourners are expected for the memorial today. we're also expecting to see attorney general eric holder that is due to speak at this service. the news media is being advised not to reveal any evidence in the george zimmerman case in florida that was accidentally sent to them. the evidence was released by the state attorney generals office. prosecuting george zimmerman. he is accused of shooting and killing trayvon martin. that evidence was mistakenly e- mailed to the media and included a picture of trayvon martin's body and george zimmerman's college transcript. there is no word how this could possibly effect the case. there is a split over the punishment for five contra costa county high schoolers accused of hazing classmates. four seniors and a soft mother at libber -- sophomore at liberty county have been expelled from football. >> we do not tolerate hazing or bullying. there is no place for it. >> i think they took it too seriously and that the players should be allowed to play football. >> the school provided counselors for the three victims and the accused can potentially face misdemeanor battery charges and receive probation. time now 6:49. sal, how is 880 doing now?
