Support Bernie Sanders. This is about moving forward a political revolution. Reporter and jenny traveled from the bay area for Hillary Clinton. We have to fight hard for your candidate. Reporter now when the two need to come together for party unity the email scandal appearing to show a party bias for Hillary Clinton has family members at odds. Senates embarrassing. Wasserman fell on her sword, so theyre moving on. We are absolutely here to have our voices heard. Were not going to be quiet. Reporter today Bernie Sanders spoke to supporters and tried to overcome those boos. We have got to elect Hillary Clinton and tim kaine. Reporter and he will try again tonight along with Elizabeth Warren, Michelle Obama and cory booker. But with drama on day one already, one side clearly burning for bernie, the other holding out hope for hillary. Is i am here to represent my constituency reporter and with the party claire stepping down, can this family, this entire convention, still come together . Thats what im hearing. Weve got to face trump and nobody is going to let that happen. I totally saw my cousin, give her a big hug, love her to death, but were not going to necessarilily have party unity. My vote is hasnt been earned yet. Reporter out live in philadelphia right now take a look at this sign you are looking. A this is tissue right here. 30 of the california delegates, or 551 delegates, are Bernie Sanders supporters. Theres been a lot of noise right here in this contingency. They are going to attempt to slow down the proceedings here. Thats what were hearing. Bernie sanders is talking to supporters and urging them to support Hillary Clinton. Joining us is governor davis. You are a pledged delegate. What do you think of this e mail controversy . Do you think is seriously going to interfere with party unity . I think its all on bernie. Bernie ran a heck of a campaign, got people involved, has all the passion with him. When he speaks tonight hes going to say my legacy lives if hillary wins. My legacy daze if trump wins. You have been to 10 different conventions. When you have white hair and get hold, you make it another round. Reporter how does this compare with others . It was a really bitter primary season. Do you really think the Democratic Party is wounded going towards the general especially after what happened this week . No, i think the competition made hillary a better candidate, and i think the followers that bernie will bring along tonight, even if he doesnt get everyone in the hall, he will reach everyone watching on television. They will understand that the whole fight for bernie can affect peoples lives and become law if hillary wins, but not trump. Thank you governor gray davis. We will be hearing from senator Bernie Sanders later, also Elizabeth Warren and Michelle Obama. We will bring it all to you live. In the meantime there are protests across the city of philadelphia. In fact, we want to show you some video that just came in. Theres actually a perimeter around the Wells Fargo Arena where i am right now and the protesters are actually lining that eightfoothigh fence around the perimeter. At least eight people have been taken into custody. Were monitoring this situation but no mass arrests and no serious injuries on either side thankfully. Again we will be here all night long. For now thats the latest live in philadelphia. Back to you. Ross, last week when you were in cleveland you talked about the security there, how strong the security was, how long it took you to actually get to the q for convention. Is the security similar there in philadelphia . How do the two compare . Reporter well, you know, the secret service is controlling the security perimeter here, the hard zone that we are in as well, so the security is just as tight. For us were actually working closer to the center, all the media is, all 15,000 members of the media from around the world so were only walking about 10 minutes. Were already in the socalled hard zone. So its easier for us. But around the City Security is very tight. In cleveland they have a very small police force. The police force in philadelphia is five times as large so the difference were seeing this time is they havent had to import any officers. They have their own officers on the streets. The protests here seem to be popping up in different parts of the city where as in cleveland it was pretty much contained to two separate areas. So is it looks like the Police Presence is visible and holding and we havent had any major issues, not yet, but it is day one. And a pretty intense day one so far by all accounts. Ross palombo in philadelphia thank you. And our political analyst brian sobel joins us for another week of political coverage. Day one got off to a rough start. Not the way the Clinton Campaign wanted things to go. No, but these conventions, as i was saying to some folks, are not these monolithic things that the party bosses want. There are people there representing all different candidates and they all have different opinions. And with everything that has gone on they want to voice their concerns. But if we just go back a week, we watched ted cruz go out of the bubble, as it were, and upset that convention. So this isnt unusual. So Donna Brazile is the new interim head of the dnc. She apologized today to Bernie Sanders for the leaked emails, says it was inexcusable. Will that be enough, especially for the Bernie Sanders supporters who are quite frankly very angry . For some, yes. For others, no. I think we are going to see some ongoing feelings by the sanders supporters who really got behind him because it was a movement. And theyre not moving over quickly because Hillary Clinton or even tonight Bernie Sanders asks them to. Some of those folks feel like just because Bernie Sanders isnt in the race doesnt mean their concerns, their points of view are now somehow aligned totally with Hillary Clinton. Well, everyone, as you mentioned, Bernie Sanders is speaking tonight, everyone waiting to hear what he has to say. He is going to try and convince his supporters to vote for Hillary Clinton. What does he have to say to them to urge them to do that . I think he has to talk about the goal. The goal is to get Hillary Clinton elected. I know that you are feeling bad, i feel your pain, as it were, but at the end of the day we have to elect Hillary Clinton. Thats what he has to say. I also suspect is that there is going to be a lot of cheering, booing, a lot of that sort of thing. For the sanders supporters they have to have one last big push. Not that they are going to change anything but letting the nation know theyre not happy. In a 60 minutes interview last night Hillary Clinton said she had no idea at all what the dnc was doing. First of all do you believe that . Secondly, if people dont believe this, doesnt this go right to the heart of the whole trust issue with Hillary Clinton . I would find it hard to believe that she was not being informed about initiatives being undertaken at the highest levels to make sure that she had an advantage. I think very early on it was clear that the democratic bosses put their hearts and souls and money behind Hillary Clinton and they were going to make that happen. I always laugh when i hear, frank, about these things like the independent expenditure committees and candidates and the law requires that you have separation. The fact is, i know from being on the inside oftentimes that and watching these things, that there is some connections. Theyre not direct, but Everybody Knows what everybody is doing. I suspect in this case that is exactly what was going on. She knew what was going on. Thats going to hurt her credibility. She is going to try to dodge that bullet. The clintons as we know are pretty good at that. She is going to say, hey, it was a fair thing, and i didnt know about the most egregious e mails, and maybe she didnt, but about the evident to make sure she was the front runner and that she was getting the support from the Democratic Party. To that theres no doubt. A lot more to talk about later on tonight. Yes. We will be watching. An interesting start to another week. A big week in philadelphia. Brian, thank you. Absolutely. You can go to ktvu. Com for more coverage of the Democratic National convention. Our web team will be Live Streaming all the major speeches. We also have a blog to take you behind the scenes. Look for the political section on our home page. Now to japan where at least 15 people were killed in a stabbing attack at a Residential Care facility for the disabled. It happened in a city west of tokyo tuesday morning. Japans National Broadcaster says that 15 people were killed, 28 were injured. Police say the suspect with a knife was in his 20s and turned himself in saying he was the one who did it. No word on a motive but one media outlet says the employee is a former employee. A fire burning in Monterey County has destroyed at least 20 homes. The fire has burned 15,000 acres in an area north of big sur. Mandatory evacuations are underway as flames threaten 1600 homes. Officials are telling residents to be ready to leave at a moments notice. It has been a frustrating day for the crews battling that fire. Jesse gary is live along the coast in carmel not far from the scene. Jesse, describe the difficulty firefighters are having just getting to the fire line. Reporter julie, the First Mountain to climb is an actual mountain with narrow dirt roads that are wide enough only for one vehicle to pass at a time. So you have fire trucks trying to squeeze through one at a time along with other vehicles. And then talk about the weather. Windy at first out of the south, then out of the north, and of course the marine layer that has hugged the coast all day long has kept the temperatures down, humidity up, which is good, but it has also lowered the visibility to the point where those aerial tankers that drop the fire retardant directly on the fire scene, well, they cant fly. So for right now this war against the fly is going to have to be a ground battle. Thats made a lot of people nervous. I want to see some structures that arent, like, toast. Reporter but so far the fire has swallowed 20 homes and two other structures. The nearly 15,000acre wildfire is out of control as it torches dryland in a hard to reach mountainous region. This fire seems to be pretty indiscriminate in what direction it goes. Its moving in all directions. And that makes it difficult to contain. Reporter dozens of bulldozers line the sides of the Pacific Coast highway as the heavy earth moving equipment being used to try and build fire breaks. Its stuff you cant replace. I cant go get a picture of my fiveyearold son is again, you know, or some of the poor traits we had or some of the memorabilia. Were all sports junkies, so we have a lot of niners, giants stuff, stuff that isnt replaceable. Reporter a handful of pets and their owners have found refuge at a red cross shelter. Many say the home they spent a lifetime building could be destroyed. Others concede this is part of the price of living in their personal paradise. Weve been through this scenario before. I can tell people what you have to do with these insurance companies. Im not an expert but i really feel for the people when they say that 20 homes are gone. We can feel it more than the average people because weve already lost on these kind of things. Reporter i just checked in with cal fire. They say they are going to have more information as to the number of structures destroyed and as to the size of containment on this fire. Right now it is at just 5 but theyre going to update us tonight at 6 00. Cal fire with the u. S. Forestry service is going to be meeting with residents at a Community Meeting at the Carmel Elementary School at 6 00. They will have more information for people in this area. My colleague will have an update for you on that on the 10 00 news. For now jesse gary, ktvu fox 2 news live in carmel. We will look forward to getting that updated information tonight. Jesse, thank you. Tracking the heat around here weve got high fire danger. You know about that. The air quality is bad. Weve got a second spare the air dayne row, and theres lots of smoke in bay area cities. I will have the specifics. Fire conditions are also bad in Southern California. Very bad. Coming up next we will go live to Los Angeles County where a fair there has been burning 10,000 acres a day. Plus i just got shot at terrifying radio calls from an Oakland Police sergeant who was in an accident and then shot at while trapped in her suv. Coming up at 5 30 the search for the gunman. In Southern California a deadly fire in Los Angeles County has grown to more than 33,000 acres. The flames have forced some 20,000 people from their homes in the Santa Clarita valley. The fire is driven by strong winds. In fact, fire Officials Say this fire is moving so fast that it is burning an average of about 10,000 acres a day. For the latest on what is called the sand fire we go now to reporter phil schuman live near the fire line. What are the conditions like tonight, phil . Reporter well, its 100 degrees and still windy. You can see the aftermath of the sand fire. One of 1 homes that was destroyed. Its named the sand fire because it started in sand is canyon north of los angeles. There are now 3,000 firefighters trying to put this out. The roar of fire engines continued through the day as support poured in from the entire west coast. Thats because the sand fire fueled by dry brush pushed by the wind continues to rage through the Angeles National forest with no containment in sight. There are just too many houses too close to the mountains to save them all. This hilltop property, one of at least 18 destroyed. The little stuff that you have got laying around your house is devastating. It catches fire and your house is gone. Reporter tom and his son jeremy live near here. Firefighters were able to save their home but last night was terrifying. It took no more than 15 minutes to take this entire area. It was crazy. The helicopters, the police, everything else. And god bless the firemen. Reporter the Evacuation Order affecting some 10,000 Homes Remains and may grow as the fast moving fire jumps around. This area in Placerita Canyon flared up. Its extremely important that when we ask for evacuations that citizens get their loved ones and animals out promptly. Reporter many disregard the order to leave even though it risks their lives and Emergency Responders as well. Don understands that but its tough to leave everything behind. We started putting passports, birth certificateses, everything together last night, then we decided to hang in there with all these firefighters. Reporter air quality remains a real concern. If you have health issues, you dont want to be outside. The 14 freeway, the main way in and out of the Santa Clarita and antelope valley, does remain open. That could change. But numerous road closures are in effect, this one on sand canyon road. If you want to leave your car and walk out with your suitcase, okay. Ive been in sacramento, trying to watch something on the news, which a lot of news wasnt up there. Reporter sues house was okay. She found out about it on facebook. Sew many of us using social media. We say, frank, only 1 houses burned. Small consolation if you are one of those 1 homeowners. Fortunately this is an area of remote ranches and major estates. Its not a subdivision where houses are right next to each other. If that was the case the number of damage or destroyed homes would have been much higher. Now, as we look towards the north and east, thats where the fire is still burning. Thats the bad news. Theres no containment expected anytime soon. The latest number was only 10 . But it is in the Angeles National forest in the mountains and not immediately threatening any more homes. Frank. Thats what i wanted to ask you, phil. There are now no homes theres still a lot of evacuations in place but there are no specific homes in imminent danger . Reporter thats right. Unless the wind really picks up, and right now its very mild, or gun usual happens or something unusual happens. In fact, right now theyre talking about repopulating parts of the valley perhaps as early as tonight. Phil, thank you. Today was a spare the air day hear in the bay area. High temperatures, stagnant air and smoke from the fire burning in Monterey County combined to create unhealthy air. Lets bring in chief meteorologist bill martin. This is exactly what you were talking about last week. Weve got this huge fire in Southern California, another fire burning in Monterey County. This is a tough time. Its california in the summer. Even more so, i was looking at this story down in Southern California where theyre losing houses. There was a time where people didnt build in those areas. You didnt build on ridge lines in the 40s and 50s. You tried to avoid that because theyre very prone to fire. You look at where the old indian encampments were. Weve changed the urban landscape where we build. There was a time when people didnt live up in those hills. So we have a Larger Population in the state of california, and we build in places that are beautiful, but there was a time, im telling you, you go back into the 40s and 50s, and they were very careful, even before that with where you build your homes, because the california environment will eat them up, whether it be an earthquake, a fire, a flood. So what weve got now, weve got poor air quality. We would have skyfox 2 up but it cant fly because of all the smoke near the fire zone. Spare the air alert tomorrow, two days in a row. Weve got that, but we also have a spare the air alert, or concerns tore the smoke coming from the fires. The soberanes is fire to the north, and the sand fire to the south. Very high humidity, light winds. It is a terrain driven fire because were talking about vertical stuff going from sea level, 5,000 feet. I mean, just jagged peaks. So the access roads are difficult. Its tough to get air drops in. Even when humidity is high the fog is obscuring much of is it. For us weve got the smoke that has drifted up. I was down in this area last night. The sun was blotted out. It was like nighttime going through there at 6 00, 7 00 at night. There was so much smoke from these fires. That smoke has worked its way north. Now weve got smoke in the diablo area, smoke down south, down towards san jose, gilroy, morgan hill, and the air quality not so great. Theres the fog along the coast. Plenty of it. As you look at that fog just know it is not going anywhere. Tomorrows highs are going to be warmer than today. These are right now temperatures. As we press into tomorrows micro climate, its cool at the coast but down right hot inland. As we push forward this week is going to be one thats marked by really crudey air and high fire danger, which is all stuff were kind of used to. But yeah, frank, you bring up a good point. Like you said, we said, hey, listen, if its 99, then 100, three days of heat in the valley, you are going to have fires. So now we have i will show you in the fiveday. Tomorrow 100 plus, wednesday 100 plus inland. So we are going to have more fires. Are there red flag warnings . You said there werent last week because of the wind. Because of the criteria, usually they will issue them for wind or excessive heat. This heat isnt really excessive. Its 100 degrees often. And it doesnt look like we will have wind this week . It should not be a problem. But the air quality is a problem because of that stagnant air. Bill thank you. At one point yahoo was one of the Top Companies in the silicon valley. Today yahoo announced it has been sold. Coming up next an expert tells us what verizon is planning next for yahoo. Millions of people get their news and information and entertainment from Companies Like aol and yahoo, and now theyre part of the biger of is ryeson empire. So this gives them content that they can give or sell to their millions and millions of subscribers. Reporter mitchell marks is a professor at San FranciscoState University who has consulted on more than 100 mergers and acquisitions is. Verizon currently has about 110 million customers, while yahoo has about a billion users. They will figure out ways to integrate them into both their wireless and their wired internet offering. Reporter but the days of exclusively delivering other companies programs are changing. That the very large companies, infrastructure companies, phone companies, Cable Companies that practically print money are now in the business of acquiring other kinds of industries, and in this case its media. Reporter comcast, for most of its life, was a Cable Company that hooked people up to channels full of content produced by others. In 2009 it got into making programming by buying nbc universal, a television and movie maker. Last april it bought movie studio dreamworks. At t already had u verse. And then it bought directv is and was in the running for yahoo. The question here is what can verizon executives do that yahoo executives were not able to do for the past decade. Reporter one thing we know for sure,er of is ryeson has surely put itself verizon has put itself squarely in the face of taking on others. Tom vacar, ktvu fox 2 news. The frantic moments after an Oakland Police sergeant is alone on patrol was hit by another car and then came under fire. I just got shot at. I was in a car wreck. The sergeant was responding to a call when a suv turned in front of her about 9 30 saturday night. The impact sent her suv car rainying onto the sidewalk. Seconds later someone uninvolved in the crash walked up and opened fire on the police car as the 10year veteran was still pinned inside. Is i cant get out of the car as officers start to respond she sounds a warning. I dont know where he went police, sheriffs deputies, and chp officers converge on the scene. The sergeant wasnt hit by gunfire but was treated and released for injuries related to the crash. The gunman remains at large. A motive is unclear but police know one thing is for sure. We have an individual who walked up to that car, unprovoked, very intentional, and fired a round interest a marked police car with an officer in full uniform inside that car. Colleagues say theyre relieved that the sergeant is okay. Shes good people. I have known her for many years. The department is blessed to have her. Shes a real asset to opd. After recent shootings of Police Across the country oakland officers have paired up on the street but the sergeant, as a patrol supervisor, was by herself at the time. But shes far from alone now. I think at times like this its very important for departments to come together and support each other. While these officers know they have a job to do, they continue to do that job. Police say is an attack against one of their own is an attack on the community as a whole. The officers is are reviewing witness statements and Video Surveillance in hopes of catching them. Henry, why was she alone in her car . Arent Oakland Police officers supposed to be patrolling two in a car now . That is the case with the exception of patrol supervisors like sergeants. They usually respond to calls after the officers respond initiallily. So they still ride alone. She was trapped in her car because the air bag went off, right . Is a combination of the air bag and the front end damage. Scary. Really hard listening to those radio calls. Since the allstar break they have only won one game. Ktvus scott reiss is at at t park. Scott is, maybe some home cooking there can help turn the team around. Reporter yeah, no doubt, frank. We can now officially conclude that the allstar break came at the worst possible time. As you mentioned the giants had won six out of seven. They were playing terrific baseball. Best record in the entire major league, and then they took four days off and everything suddenly went south. They came back from the break. They went on the road for eight games and lost seven. Now theyre only three games up on the dodgers in the National League west. And it has been a teamwide problem. All five starting pitchers lost during that stretch. The team has averaged less than three runs a game. So being back in San Francisco is exactlily what this group needs. Yeah, this is baseball. Some things are hard to explain. Came off the break and you like to think you are going to come out playing well. We didnt. Really on all facets of the game. I dont think anybody saw that coming. We were playing so w. Reporter did the allstar break come at the wrong time for you guys . Because you were rolling, then you take four days off, and you had a tough week. Hey, matt, we cant put our finger on that. We havent been getting the job done. This is a tough little stretch for us, but weve just got to weather the storm and just not panic. Well be fine. Well be fine. Reporter never any panic with this group. Theyre still in first place. Youve got the last place Cincinnati Reds in town. You can see them taking batting practice. Oh by the way, cinci being a last place club, one of those teams that might be selling off some parts as the trade deadline approaches, so is just is maybe they are ripe for the picking, maybe just what the doctor ordered as the giants are trying to get well. Scott reiss, thank you. A check of our weather now for bill. Beautiful night for baseball. Really is. Numbers out there today on the warm side, its going to be warmer out there for baseball. Air quality not right. Its a little messed up. A spare the air day tomorrow, second day in a row. Smoke in the atmosphere from that soberanes fire in the big sur. 96 in fairfield, 94 in antioch. They go to the low 100s tomorrow. Inland valleys are going to have some nasty air quality. We head south a little bit. Theyve been getting a ton of rain down towards houston, up towards albuquerque as well in the new mexico area. Heavy subtropical moisture. In the east coast, all day. If you had flights out to new york or newark or anywhere along that northeastern seaboard, big rain, flood warnings, flood watches. For us fog and smoke, and weve got heat. Thats how it goes. So fog lives at the coast. Smoke lives in the south is and east bays. Plenty of big numbers tomorrow. Fog has made a push across the avenue. All our friends out here, 750,000 people live in that area. Thats a lot of people in these homes. You might have a heater on out there. A light jacket. 94 in concord, 9 in livermore. Theres that fog. Its all pinched down, and thats how you know. Is it going to be warmer tomorrow . Yeah. If that fog was coming up over s sutro, when you see that, i can just is leave. You dont need me. You see that driving down to the airport, hot day tomorrow, poor air quality, higher fire danger. As we push into i just gave away all my secrets right there. Fog in the morning, burns off, temperatures warm up. Heres the fiveday forecast. Its definitely very warm tomorrow. Wednesday is a big one, too.
