To make his accept apps speech, with protests growing in the streets, with a protester even getting inside the q, with Police Presence dramatically pumped up, new horses, new barricades, new xray scanners and new agitation. In all of this it is still ted cruz. I am not in the habit of supporting people what attack my wife and attack my father. Reporter stealing the headlines with his mic. That pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack heidi that im going to nonetheless sound like a puppy dog and say thank you very much for mall laining my wife and mall lining my father. His comes after his shocking 23minute speech. I want to congratulate donald trump on winning the nomination last night. Where he only said is trumps name once and didnt endorse him before getting booed off stage. God bless each and every one of you, and god bless the United States of america. Reporter today cruz doubled down on that non endorsement. What does it say when you stand up and say vote your conscience and rabid supporters of our nominee begin screaming what a horrible thing to say. Reporter all of it prompting even more horror, more outrage and more party problems. The whole state of texas and who unprompted coming up to us saying that this wasnt right of cruz and they are supporting the trumppence ticket. Reporter california delegate scott is robertson was right in the middle of it. It was extremely intense. Reporter he traveled 2400 miles to be here. And as a San Francisco Real Estate Developer and businessman i think the first thing that ted has done is betrayed himself. Reporter he says cruz cut trump a bad daily. What does he want to do betray the partys front runner when were going against Hillary Clinton . Thats a mistake. Reporter with mike pence making a powerful speech last night we will make America Great again reporter the issue for trump is still bank unity, before his party can get on with the business of the general election. Its been exhausting. Im a little tired, but im looking forward to tonight. Reporter Sheriff Joe Arpaio from phoenix, arizona, a man very tough on crime just wrapped up his speech. He was actually probably the perfect one that donald trump will start off his speech with, talking about crisis in america, a crisis of crime, a crisis of terrorism around the world. I know earlier in the show we talked about what his speech was going to be about but i can tell you it is generally the stump speech that we have been hear month after month, not much new added to the. The big question is tonight is how will he deliver it, how much will he adlib, and how much will he really make a change to bring this Party Together tonight. Well have the very latest tonight. Back to you there in oakland. Obviously this is going to have to be Donald Trumps speech of a life time. Ross, can we talk for a moment about peter thiel, the cofounder of paypal, a billionaire from here in the valley . What is the significance of him speaking . Reporter hes the first openly gay man to address the rnc since 2000. He was reluctant to come out of the closet but now that he is hes going to be taking the stage and speaking about gay issues. Just recently, they changed the platform here to strengthen their stance is against gay marriage. Peter thiel is going to tell them that we need to move away from arguing over these social issues, but this party really needs to focus more on things like the economy and terrorism, things that matter to everyone, and focus less on divisive things like social issues. That should be very interesting once he expresses his thoughts. Hes been a friend of donald trump for quite some time. He is the billionaire from silicon valley, a venture capitalist. Hes had an ongoing relationship with donald trump. So he sort of straddles the fence between the two words, between the liberal bay area people and the hifi nance wealthy community that donald trump is a part of. All right, ross, well let you listen in on what is happening behind you. We will see you in just a bit. In the meantime we are getting our first look at the speech donald trump is set to give tonight, likely the biggest speech of his life. He is going to focus on the middle class saying, quote, they will experience is profound relief. He also wants to help people who have, in his words, been neglected, ignored, and abandoned. Joining us is our political expert brian sobel. Critics are saying his speech is like his stump speech. That a good thing . Is he has to lack president ial and show america a lot of people tuning in that there is a different donald trump. Its the donald trump that his kids have been talking about, that other people have talked about, perhaps well hear in that the speech tonight. What do you think will be most effective . He is going to be stump he if hes going to the stump speech with a teleprompter, hes going to lose a lot of spontaneity. Tonight is a different kind of speech. Hes got to connect with people who are independent, who dont want to say what they are going to volt for, for democrats, for republicans who may be leaning in a different direction. Hes got to be president ial. I read a quote from someone who is an independent who is saying what he wanted to see was something specific tonight. Donald trump tends to speak in generalities. Im going build a wall and mexico pay for it. Is right. He said, i want to see something specific, and his quote was, throw me a bone so that i will vote four. Whoever that was is right on point, because the fact is that the lack of specificity has been Donald Trumps both strong suit and weak suit. And now hes got to really come to the game with specifics. So if hes talking about the middle class tonight and some of these things that were hearing about, its not just is, were going to take care of the middle class and were going to be huge. Its going to be, i have a threepart program, it is this, this, and this. Otherwise, its just one more donald trump speech. We heard ross talk about peter thiel, a billionaire, an openly gay man addressing the party. The significance in your view of that. Its an hiss storic thing. The party platform, as roughing pointed out, is very much against gay marriage and transgender issues and that sort of thing. Hes going to come out and say we ought to set all of that aside as people and concentrate on the issues that are really important in the world, Like National security, like income problems among middle class and lower income people, and all these other issues that really are much more important for most americans than any of these issues that may end up in a platform. Well, there are going to be so many people watching tonight. We will talk to you again at 6 00. Absolutely. Then again on the 10 00 news after donald trump has spoken. It should be really good. What are you hearing . Reporter their intentions is are never made public. I can tell awe couple of weeks ago when they marched from downtown and suddenly burst onto the freeway, that certainly was not promulgated in advance. I can tell you chp certainly are monitoring the off ramps. I see Oakland Police on motorcycles as well as dirt bikes. They are prepared to mobilize, if and only if these protesters decide to go on the freeway or move around the city at this point. Ktvus tom vacar has been covering this issue for years. We asked him to look into the situation. Currently the spread between californias average gas price of 2. 83 a gallon today is 67 cents a gallon higher than the National Average of 2. 19, even though all california refineries are back online. 20 cents is a typical spread. It could be as much as 25 cents. We had 1. 50 gap in Southern California more for our gas than u. S. Last year. Were still at 70 cents above the average. Reporter the consumer watchdog says one of the main reasons for the excessive spread is that california refineries are exporting gasoline by tasker ship, and that by definition, reduces the supply available to californians. The work that ktvu did tracking down these missing ships that were not filling up, were not dropping off gas but were taking it out of california has been part of the evidence that we put before the attorney generals task force, and the attorney general finally issued subpoenas to every major oil refiner.
