An increase in tuition could be on the horizon next year after a four year freeze. Today students at San Francisco state took part at a rally and march across campus at noon. Protests say if tuition and fees go up many students will have an even tough i remember time paying for their education. Its a bighearted burden have to go work, we have students working 23 jobs on top of being a full time student, making ends meet. So, them increasing tuition or putting using us as a back been of the economy its not fair, its not right. The tuition freeze comes to an end at the end of the 2016 2017 academic year, the board of trustees recommended tuition being increased annually. Rallies at five other campuses across the straight. Fire crews said they caught a couple breaks when fighting a i remember too, you can see the smoke and flames at fifth avenue. Crews from several agencies including oakland, san jose and San Francisco happened to be taking a class in marine firefighterring at jack londons square at the time. They all responded to this real life fire. The wind direction also helped of course keeping the flames from spreading inland along the dockment it was going south. One house boat was completely destroyed and a second was damaged. Nobody was living in those particular boats and nobody was hurt. Here is a time lapse of the time it took to get a fire boat on to the scene. Our crews spotted the fire at 12 19 this afternoon, 11 minutes later the first hose hits the burning boat from the water at 12 30. Friar trucks were parked in the parking lot and had to run hoses down the pier to reach the boat that was burning so there was a little bit of a delay. But the bad good news is, oaklands main fire boat, the sea wolf has been parked at jack long doss square for years because of budget cuts, that smaller fire boat was able to get there quickly. The first thing we noticed when broadcasting live at noon, i kept watching the clock go, i didnt see an attack. We saw the hoses being pulled as you said from the engines but nothing on the water. With that sea wolf out it certainly races questions about the citys ability to handle any marine related incident. You know, thank goodness the winds worked in firefighters favor here. You talked to the Fire Department today, what did they say about that. I talked with the fire chief, she says would love to have the main fire boat back in, we applied for federal grants, the money hadnt come through. Given this fire and the one that happened on saturday that, you know, she will continue to push for and hopefully get a main fire boat for the city of oakland. City councilmembers find money in the budget. It could happen. It is that time of year again, time to well spare the air. Today marks the start of the spare the air summer season. Bay area quality managers want everyone to know what a Critical Role you play in reducing pollution during the warm weather. And we are joined in studio by spokeswoman lisa fizano spokeswoman for the air management district. I noticed my commute over 0 the last four or five years get completely worse, more cars on the road, more cars means probably worse for the air. It is, absolutely. Weve taken care of the low other polluting sources like that. But vehicles now, transportation is the number one source in the by area, people who drive alone in the cars are the biggest culprits, we need people to double and triple up to reduce congestion. One the incentives used to be free bar days. That was a long time ago, more than is 1 years ago, we special funding for that introducing people to talk transit and make them think differently then. We ran that program for three years and trying to get people to focus further, transit is at capacity so we need people to carpool. That is what i was going to say, you hop on burt and it seems as if every single train car is packed. Aside from carpooling what else can we do . Certainly taking transit like the busses is a great option. The trains in the area are a good option as well. If you have the ability to bike or walk to work its a great option as well as taking transit. Are stuck, when i lived in the city and worked here i could jump on burt, i live in Sonoma County there is no transit unless i warn to talk four or five busses and a ferry, each way to get here, some of us are stuck, we couldnt have a choice. You can go to 501. Org and look for carpoolers, people commuting down this way from sonoma. Even a few times a week, it doesnt have to be every day of the week, plus there is a lot of new apps with carpoolor or car sharing developments on them. People can look those up and find a rider. After all these years summer, throw in the wintertime as well, do you have any numbers to back up that decision, making a difference in the air quality here in the by area, spare the air days. Absolutely people now with the free transit they recognize what spare the air is, they know it means that we have dirty air and its bad for their health. Now we need them to talk the next step and clean the air by reducing the amount of transportation, the traffic that is on the roads to help us reduce air pollution overall. Spare the air unusually happens when the airs stagnant or the care is. Coulding from the north or east plowing coming from the north or east. We have pollutants in the air every day. The hot air temperatures in the afternoon cook it up into small pollution which is unhealthy. And so what is what we are fighting against during the summer months. Carpool out there, folks, bike, walk, whatever can you do. Its double what me for by area worker, the high cost of housing and increase in traffic, now a new survey finds those two things are pushing people to rethinking their life right here in the by area. A dramatic drop in temperatures came our way today, checking in on the Current Conditions and how long the cooling trend is lasting, even the possibility of wet weather coming our way, more on that in just a bit. Shark fans out there, we are following this black cat, its a black cat who ran across the ice before the San Jose Sharks game against the nashville predators, well the sharks won if you are wondering f you want to know what happen to the catalog on cal cal facebook page. 24 going to lafayette, already a pretty slow start in the eastbound direction, westbound toward the tunnel not too bad. M remember that face . You might recognize him from the bachelorette, but dr. Larry is a practicing doctor in San Francisco and now an author, he is writing a book on finding your fit self called the gentlemans diet. So great to have you here with us. First of all, why write this book . You know, i got to a point in my own life where i was ready as a doctor to actually eat the right way and exercise consistent la. It was kind of sad, my daughter at the time she was three called me fat. And i was 15 pounds heavier than i am now. Did a lot of research, put a book together with a lot of different options, different ways to do it on healthy lifestyle. Okay, so how did you trim down, lose those 15 pounds and for ladies out there this isnt just a gentlemans diet. There is a lot of principles for everybody. We dont even talk about diet and exercise, we talk about motivation and mission and finding out what is really important to you and connecting that with how you live your liver day. For me i used to eat two ham sandwiches at lunch and a bunch of chips and a glass of milk. I kit the chips out, got rid of one of the sandwiches, you know once i couldnt get rid of all the chips in the beginning, cut down to less. Lowered the amount. One step at a time and then more consistently exercise. You mentioned motivation, you mentioned the mission, you and i were talking about this New York Times article, looked at the reality weight loss shows, you know, the people come on, yeah, i know. People come on, they are really successful, right, we cheer them on but what this article found once the cameras stopped rolling they find of resort back to their old habits and they arent able to keep the weight off, are you surprised at all by that . I think i was a little bit surprised. The times talked about this article on general obesity of the big guess loser, of the 14 contestants they followed them six years later, the main winner lost 240 pounds, he went from 430 down to 190 pounds. Six years later he had put back 100 pounds. Kind of disappointing you know when you first hear that, they figure out how to live a healthier lifestyle and then they stick with it and get the benefits for the rest of their life. But that is not what happen. Why is that . Thats a really good question. I mean, youve watched these shows, right . Right. And this particular guy for part of the exercised for seven hours a day. You could do that when you are on the show, how many of us can do that in real life. Its not realistic, its not sustainable, its a reality tv crash diet. It puts them in a place afterwards its harder to keep the weight loss. He lost 240 pounds over the course of seven mondays. So we say lose about months. So we say lose a pound a week. Slow and steady. Eight pounds a week, so instead of this gradual down it was and then back up. Yeah, so you say sustainability important here. Yeah, one the tips is what can you do for the long haul, what can you submit to if you love bread and cashes then maybe adkins, a super low cash diet isnt for you, right . Right. What kind of exercise do you like to do, if you hate the hamster wheel i dont recommend the treadmill. If you love basketball incorporate that. Find something you can do consistently and that you enjoy doing. Motivation, big big part of your book and this is my final question, i say its important to determine the big why, the big why you want to run this marathon, why is that so important . It connects into this study, too, everybody is going to plateau, you lose weight it goes like this why are you doing this . Do you want to be there when your kids graduate, active when you are older, or in a nursing home in a wheelchair, these things are real, i have seen people in the er that die of heart attacks, connect to go your big why, figuring that out and integrating that into your lifestyle, that is a key to success. Thank you for being with us here today. The big why, why can that is my question to you guy. I dont know, that is a good question. It makes me hungry. Lets check in with rose mary she is keing an eye on the weather. Yes, a lot of folks asking why did we cool off so much today. Well a big switch in the weather pattern, lets step outside, talk a look at san jose where we have partly cloudy skies over the higher elevations, partly cloudy around the bay, low clouds hugging up against the coastline. The on shore breeze is back and talk a look at the 24 hour temperature change, want to start here because some of us are nearly 20 degrees cooler than we were yesterday afternoon. Down by 17 degrees. Down by 17 in hayward, 11 in mountain view, 14 in santa rose a. A few degrees of cooling in fairfield, liver moore down by 2. Concord by 5. Again everybody seemed to really cooldown especially along the coast, especially around the bay. Portions of the north bay as well. Here is a look at the numbers, we have 70degree the right now in santa rosa, 66 in navado. Upper 50s in San Francisco. 71 san jose. Low to mid60s along the east bay shoreline. 65 in hayward. Some areas touching 80 degrees, fairfield, walnut creek and liver moore, these areas we didnt see such a big dropoff. They managed to catch up once again and its still mild to warm for inner east bay. Cooling trend is just under way and continue as we get into the business this week. Here is a look at the winds, on shore breeze at 22 miles per hour. Hayward 20. Livermore the breeze at 13. San jose on shore breeze at about 17. The on shore breeze isnt going away of the the clouds arent going away. We are going to introduce the possibility of rain. Looking at the atmosphere and circulation going on, in the this big trough out here working towards the bay area in the coming days and that will bring us the possibility of scatter ited showers, it is going to go keep us locked in this cool pattern, showers a possibility, maybe even isolated thunderstorms, i will show you that in the extended forecast. If you see the as tonight, the partly cloudy skies, low 60s. Continue to go cool off in the evening hours. Talking president overnight lows and into tomorrow morning its going to be a cool start for the north by and east bay as we get around the by area, areas like oakland 53 for tomorrow, 51 expected in san mateo, afternoon highs will be relatively mild looking at 11 expected for navaid dough, so cool by the coast, cool in the city of San Francisco. Looking at 669 in hayward. Upper 70s in antioch. Warm today, mild tomorrow. You are looking at 5 in more began hill. The ex at thed forecast here we will again be partly cloudy, temperatures on the mild side for tomorrow. Cool at the coast. Partly to mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures cooling off wednesday, thursday, friday. Upper 50s to upper 60s depending where you live. In the the chance. 20 30 chance so not a lot expected but again we are looking at that pattern to hold on. Then it switches over to the weekend. Rose mary thank you very much. Solar impulse two is on its way to arizona, why this leg is going to talk 16 hours just to get from the bay area to arizona. Groundbreaking journey around the globe. Hey i think the internet just went down. Huh, why dont you give it a sec, itll come back. Something just happened in the world and we have no idea what it was. Get high Speed Internet from at t with 99. 9 reliability for just 30 a month. Keep calm, your internets on. Gosh, can you believe it today marks five years since Osama Bin Laden was killed by a Navy Seal Team in a compound in pakistan. The white house will not hold any special events to mark the kit of the mission. The president did tell cnn, it would have taken years to find the leader of alqaida again, he admits there were also risks. Now we are going to be talking about the solar powered plane on a Historic Mission into part of the by area this morning heading to its next stop phoenix. The Solar Impulse 2 took off, the trip to arizona will talk 16 hours because the plane cant fly faster than 50 miles an hour although it may have a tail wind and get there sooner. It took three days for that plane to fly from hawaii to call call. The solar panels powers its motors. The team of two pilots started last march in a journey around the globe proved that flight is possible without using Petroleum Based fuel. Lets go now to a live radar of where the aircraft is flying right now. And looking at the map here it looks like its down in the imperial valley, you know, the monitor is aways for us. It looks like it is down in the bar stole area. What are they expecting as they cross into the state, flying into a desert. Well, you talk off from here and flying southeast and you will fly over the Central Valley and then you hit the mountains and that is when you pass over the high desert and so you will be over palmdale and bar stole and all that and cross the Colorado River and enter arizona. The problem with that part of the country flying in the middle of the day you get up drafts of hot air, so it can be a bumpy flight. So its warm down there. Its warm but its not like july, not quite so bad. Looking outside we have wind blowing out of the west i think they are getting there sooner than 16 hours. Pretty cool, wish them lots of luck. All right. Princes family now head to go court over the late singers estate. Well tell you about the state law that could dictate just who gets princes fortune. Im terrible at golf. He is. People say im getting better. No ones ever said that. But id like to keep being terrible at golf for as long as i can. Hes just happier when hes playing. But hes terrible. Its pretty clear the bay area is in the grip of serious housing crisis but a new survey finds that is only part of the reason why a third of bay area residents are considering moving out of town, the other major thing traffic. The by area council asked a thousand people and found out many complained of this double what me, we are looking deeper at this research. We are joined by matt Fuller Real Estate expert from money monday. No surprise, we are all complaining about how things cost here, people have had it. No surprise on housing costs, every month we read another story about rent going up to some new level, housing costs reaching a new high in terms of median price. I think that the surprise is the reaction that weve gotten from residents here that they are considering leaving this beautiful place where we have had tremendous Economic Growth and job creation. These people lived here less than five years or people who have put some time in here, maybe a decade who are considering taking off. Millenials, that group of residents who are 1833 or so, 34 years old seem to be the most likely or most inclined to leave the region. We know this is a more mobile group in terms of population. But there are also future generation or future work force. So another reason for considerable concern that we will be losing this business of talent for employers here for years to come. So that is an alarm bell for state, regional and local policy makers, legislators or responding to the issues. Matt, when you have have folks coming to look at a house, they know the reality but its still Something Else when you walk into the house and you see that figure. Oh, yeah, its shocking. You hear a Million Dollars that is going to be its going to be in San Francisco and it might have a floor and a ref. Exactly, its not a Million Dollars home that i grew up in texas. Exactly. I mean people somewhat get it, they will an idea online you can do a lot of research in advance but there is still something about walking through that space for the first time and, you know, people are like really . Really, but despite all of those things this is still where people want to be, we are still a global city, it is expensive, it is congested and people are still coming. You are looking at numbers on real estate i think in San Francisco they finally, finally after all this time started to level off. Thats what its starting to feel like, still seeing a disparity between singlefamily homes, plateau coming into the Condominium Market, new construction Condominium Market where there are still inventories actively created, there are some buildings right now that homes are going right out the door and others that are taking longer. Are we on the right track, one you could are do you as a homeowner its great news, but on the flip side, if you are renting it its awful. Its terrible. Are the polls bear that out. People have been here longer that own their home are actually more optimistic, confident, happier here than folks paying a higher percentage of their income toward housing costs and are not homeowners. Certainly 40 of residents here think that the region is not on the reek track. Down from 57 just two years ago. I would emphasize what matt was saying, people still want to be here. They do want to live here, we have to figure out more creative ways to allow them to stay here. Matt, what are you seeing as far as the numbers . How much are rents going up and how much are the costs of homes going up. For the first time weve seen a leveling in rents, we are talking about maybe a slight decrease. We are talking about leveling. At a very very very high level. Right. So and there is nothing, you know, kind of the scary part about this there is two parts to this equation supply and demand, if we are not going to fix the supply part, the demand will fix itself. Apple left, facebook left, google left, i never lived anyplace where people are cheering for the economy to tank. Are we getting talented people who cant afford these outrageous rents and mortgages and looking at places in austin, texas where you can get twice the house for less money. The governor of florida is coming this week, we dont think he has a good chance of it. But it certainly is, i dont know how earn canned or scary that is. It should be a concern however i think the poll result that we got offer an initial red flag for that very scary prospect. So you know, our talent pool here, the brains that we have in this region are are what drive our economy. And so we need to predict that. Weve done stories about San Francisco and the threat of the middle class disappears, its almost as if that is starting to spread out beyond the city by the bay and the suburbs and other counties that the threat of the middle class could disappear from the bay area some day at this pace. Yeah, we are seeing that in terms of the results that we got in the poll, there was a larger number folks in middle and lower incomes that are considering moving out. The other thing that we saw from earlier poll results is people are looking to the Central Valley sacramento as a place to build our housing, that means longer commute and more traffic, we dont have the transportation talking about the legislatures, specifically what could they do . Right now we are working with citizen at i dont remember bob from freemont on adu legislation, accessory dwelling units, in law units, junior units, trying to remove some of the costs, fees, regulations requirements that make that create an obstacle for homeowners to construct those, adding is 50,000 new units of housing easing the regulations and requirements on adus, working with the senator right now to move that legislation through the legislature and optimistic well get that done. Weve been hearing there is an upside outside of San Francisco because people who want to live in the city and cant afford it are looking some place else, west oakland, other places outside the city, are you seeing any kind of movement with home boyars, im giving up on San Francisco where are they going . They are going south or kind of east. And really kind of especially if they want a Single Family theyll go to oakland. Further out and further out and further out. And unfortunately its a drive to qualify, how far do you have to drive out before you can qualify for a loan. Especially when you talk about the fact people are frustrated by traffic and the lack of transit option the. So its not only a issue of high density housing but transit options, do you see that on the horizon. Its been the horizon for quite sometime. We helped create burt, and bart, and its an issue we are binging our heads on every day, 3. 5 billion bond for burt to try to improve the speed, capacity and efficiency of that system of the and try and squeeze in more and more folks. We saw from our poll great support for a second trans bay tunnel. Something else on the horizon to be thinking about. Youngest of four and im the only sibling left in the bay area, the others are forget it. That is over the last decade. Something we are going to keep talking about for a long time until things settle down. Thank you for being here. Thank you so much. My tools tell me the same thing. Low clouds hugging the coastline today. Big drop of temperatures came this afternoon, we had a big drop of temperatures early on, even by lunch time we could feel the difference. Talk a look at concord, san jose warmed into the upper 70s in concord dropping off from 84 degrees that was the high on sunday. So a notable change today in the way of the cooling trend, the low clouds came in and we started out the day with partly to mostly cloudy skies, we have upper 60s in napa, low of 0s, a cool one after the bay, San Francisco cool at this hour 58, you go inland and temperatures mild to even warm, fairfield right now 80 degrees, livermore 80. And then as we get into friday it looks like we have another opportunity of scattered shower the. In addition to slight thunderstorms being in the forecast. Futurecast model on that rainfall amounts not going to be a whole lot. But where we maybe see an isolated thunderstorm pop up with the brief heavy downpour could see halfinch of rain, as we get through that second part of the business week.
