It is just chilling to hear the names named off one by one as the families of the victims are asking for privacy during this time. But some released written statements including the family of lucas ibal saying, we have been trying to figure out how to tell everyone how amazing lucas was, but they say that would take 18 years. And the family of the 34 yearold Jason Johnson said that jason was proud of himself enrolling in school and so was his mom. They felt jason had finally found his path. Authorities say that the gunman was heavily armed legally ataping his weapons. We have more information about the young man behind the mass shooting. Reporter the attacker was well prepared to inflict devastation on the campus of Umpqua Community college. Trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which rocked this quiet town in oregon and the nation. So far we recovered 13 weapons. Out of those 13 weapons we currently have in custody six where we that we covered at the school. Seven that were recovered at the shooters residence. Reporter all weapons purchased legally within the last three years. The shooter is widely being identified as 26yearold chris Harper Mercer, but the county sheriff refuses to use his name. I continue to believe that those media and Community Members who publicized his name will only glorify his horrific actions. Reporter the violence erupting thursday morning on the 4th day of classes at ucc. One witness says the shooter asked victims to state their religion before he opened fire. He later died following the shootout with police. These students live in the same complex as the shooter, but they say that they have never seen them before. It was scary when you first heard about that shooting that it is obviously your school and your community, but it is different that you find out that he lived next door to you. Reporter the Oregon Governor kate brown commenting on the situation. One persons act may have indeed broken all of our hearts, but he cannot prevent our hearts from growing back bigger and stronger. Reporter the county sheriff still says he doesnt know if there will be any connection between the shooter and the campus, expected to resume on monday. In roseburg, oregon Dan Springer Fox news. Witnesses say that many more people could have died if not for this man, 33yearold chris mintz shot multiple times. Reporter everyone is talking about how chris mintz wasnt scared to stand up to the shooter and how in that moment he was thinking of the others first instead of himself. And that has a lot of people calling him a hero. And that he is app army veteran and currently a ucc student, meaning that he is also a father. Now, he was shot multiple times yesterday as he would try to protect others from the gunman. According to his family in north carolina, that didnt stop the rampage. And he would try to block that door from coming in. And that the gunman would say that it is his birthday today. Got shot two more times. And that is more than other people have done. And initially unclear how many times he was shot. But that they were set up by the family saying that they were hit seven times. And that he will need a lot of rehab and the pager at noon today, first out of the 175,000. And that it is a huge outpouring of support for chris mintz. And well have more on twitter, encouraging the others to remember him rather that night killer. Yeah, no doubt. What about the name alex scarlato who recently stopped the gunman. What is his connection between him and roseburg . Reporter well, he was suppose to be enrolled in the school there at ucc. And it was his heroic actions overseas that prevented him from being on campus because he was sent off to compete with dancing with the stars. But had he not been on the show, he would have been in oregon in that classroom that day, well yesterday when the shooter was there and that he says he wishes that he could have been there to help those victims. I read something and he went on to say you know that i was able to be in the right place at the right time in paris that i wish i could have been in the right place at the right time in oregon, it certainly is. And we know that incidents like that could be so difficult to talk about it with your children as we decided to check in with the Common Sense Media for some advice and here is what they would tell us that no matter your kids age that it will be really important when Something Like this happens to reassure your kids that they are safe. While these situations, they are so disturbing to us as adults that they will be likely to pick up on our motions to determine their own approach as they would say that it is best to stay calm and consider when discussing situations like this and also remind the children that while they are getting a lot of attention that youll see it on the news, in the no. Youll see it online. And that they will remind you that things like this, they are really rare. Yes, how that 5yearold that he already is, imitating them picking up on their own reaction to it to see that one tip right there. Now, they also suggest to turn off the tv. Radio news, to keep the newspaper and to still get them out of sight, so that these children, they dont get scared of the photos that they sometimes get plastered there on the front page to try not to minimize their concern and their fears and really common sense, it says how their Pre School Children were talking about them that they dont need to see or hear something that will only scare them. And especially that they could easily confuse their facts, fantasies, fears at the age of four. A good recommendation to keep them away at a time like this when they are being put up there as well. You really need to take in to account your own childs age and temperament that children at this age could see morality in white and black terms. If you need to correct the fact that this is the time to do it and also mike if you let your child use the internet, especially after the incident like this that it will be really important to go online with them and that you had talked about those images. That they would have shown that independently talking with them to offer the great insight in to that developing politics and the morality that they will also say to giveout opportunity to throw your own insights in to the mix and how that family conversation would make sure that you would emphasize that word family to be together. Guns, drugs, and an arrest this morning during a gang sweep in four Northern California cities. A Multiagency Task force served five search warrants on locations in oakland, vallejo, and sacramento. They found assault weapons and ammunition including high capacity magazines. One of them is capable of holding 100 rounds according to one officer. Police say that five dangerous gang members were arrested today. Authorities say that they are seek state and federal charges against the people arrested during this sweep. One person was hurt after a car plowed right in to an Optometry Office in Castro Valley happening at 9 00 this morning. You can see the white car slammed in to the front window and somehow flipped over landing on its rooftop trapping the driver inside. So far it is unclear what lead to the crash, although several witnesses say that speed may have played a factor as the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. And police are warning women at San FranciscoState University to be vigilant after an attack on campus. Officers say that it happened at berk hall on wednesday night 7 00. The female student tells Campus Police that she was walking with a man when they started up the conversation with her, following her in to berk hall, and police say that she told them that the man then picked her up. And then tried to lower her to the ground as she said she pulled away and started walking to muni and the man continued to follow her. That woman was able to get on to a bus and leave campus. Police continue to advise women on any campus to be aware of their surroundings and walk in groups. Yeah, that is certainly good advice no matter where you are. Exactly. Reporter but the coastal communities, they will start to see the additional flooding on saturday with some areas, seeing as much as an additional 15 inches of rain. Yeah, a day after the campus shooting in oregon, Authorities Say that Christopher ShawnHarper Mercer who died during the shootout with police wore a flat jacket wore a flak jacket and brought magazines to the school that day. Another magazine was at the apartment that he shared with his mother. You might remember that the president challenged the media, challenging them to do a very specific thing. Government defines active shooter as someone actively engaging in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. According to the fbi from 2000 to 2013 there were 160 active shooting incidents in the u. S. According to the website shootingtracker. Com, there have been 294 Mass Shootings just this year in the u. S. That they would fine them of at least four people injured by the gunfire. And that they were considered a mass shooting as they have addressed the Mass Shootings in a dozen times. The thoughts and prayers are not enough. But state that they would agree that they posted the editorial on the front page, asking when will it end . And also today that the governor of oregon said that americans must take action. Reporter there is no single solution that will prevent every shooting, but we must and we will do better to prevent these types of senseless violence. This is a conversation that we will have, but today is not day. Today we must be focused on providing the support to help this community heal. Reporter and they are now reporting, heather that they were enrolled in class at the Community College. I say that because also reported in that is 12 out of the High School Shooters were students, some sort of association. Really incredible numbers. That they just want to read something else. This goes back to their point when Something Like this happens that well do something to fix it and fishing for those gun control laws. And now they will join us now. Right off the top that i want to get your reaction as you would hear about it. And just feel for the families as you would feel for everybody. Its hard for those that have to go in to the horrific scenes and that it is just terrible for everyone. It is an allaround tragedy, j. D. , but you know we practice for the fires, we do the fire drills in our school. How do you prepare for Something Like this . The active shooter on campus . When they created that shield and their way of training all f our First Responders in the bay area on how to cope with those situations like this. Because not only do we do that tactical side of it. Getting them there, able to help the victims that need to be out. Reporter youve heard of them, across the country that they would participate. Now, you are training those individuals that work at high schools. We dont get to pick and cheese the calls that we will be going to. With eight minutes, the shooter was dead, we dont know, but it was their action that drove them to do that. So although that we do like to help people and you know that we have protected to serve the communities, there is some point in time that you need to help those people to take care of their situation. Thats with a they do. If the moment that you are training for a situation is the day that it would happen that you will be way too late. What is one to do when you find yourself in this situation . You do urban shields and other things. But each one of sympathizuations are different. Should i flea or try to barricade myself, play dead, what is the advice here . There is no set formula. Each one of them would play out differently. But they are some of the ways that they would suggest. And to do that. Getting out of the area. That there might be a time when you need to fight and that youll take on that person. Of course that will be a great risk to do that with some situations, as we saw that on their flight that they will not go in there and they took action. Sometimes you just need to take that action.
