Slightly republican. You look at the past 10, 12 years, the seat has gone back and forth. Its gone republican, democrat, republican, democrat. Bounced back and forth. Tell me the raginal. You have been a sheriff. You have been a political guy since you were 18 years old. You were on your town council in massachusetts. You got an early start in politics. Whats the rationale . What is it you want it accomplish . You look at our cou where we are at. I dont feel safer than i have in the past. In fact, i feel our country is more threatened, compromised when you look at isis. I serve not as a lawman and a sheriff but also 20 years in the army, in the reserve component. Served a term in iraq. Commanded soldiers here in our state down on the border and when you see the leadership in our country under the president take the approach we have, its leadership, we need people to run for office for congress that have a background not just as a sheriff but as an army officer retired to help make these decisions, to rebuild our military, thats important to me. To take care of our veterans when they havent been taken care of, all of the issues we talked about on your show in the past about an unsecure border, you have seen what weve done. Myself personally and our deputies leading the fight against the mexican drug cartels, we had the largest drug bust in the history of arizona, 3 billion. I dont give speeches about these things. I do something. When people hate congress and hate washington and they think nothing can get done, well, if we all had that attitude, we might as well pull the sheet over our head and call it quits. You believe there is this nexus then between National Security and the immigration issue. More importantly an unsecured border thats a part of this. And also whats a part of it is when we have isis that has declared war against us. We havent declared war against them. Its a National Security thing is one of the reasons why you are running. Clearly. Whats the issue in district 1. If i can explain district one if you can take camera four, you have tucson, you have phoenix and this district runs like a reverse sea around those two south. Its as big as new york state. Its massive. And the issues are vast in this district. They are. You see when you break it down, there is more democrat population up north and more republican down south. And rural issues. The issues i deal with in pinal county from farming, agriculturing no the cotton agriculture to Cotton Growers to these are issue. Power and energy with the navajo generating station. Not just there. There are four of them there are coal fire generating stations in arizona. You want them to remain open and operating. Made that a top issue and in fact its one of the differences in the candidacy, myself as a republican, Hillary Clinton has said she is the nominee on the democrat side. Halerren says he favors keeping navajo hope. Depending who he is talking honestly this is where i had debates i had two debates with him that he agreed to and then also we have been up in winslow talking to the train conductors icktrain engineers and most were democrats and he spoke and i spoke and you ask them there is 120 of them, and they asked him where he stood on the Clean Power Plan which is this whole plan to basically to kill coal which will kill the jobs. And will up our electric rates president obama hailing this initiative to curb Green House Gases to curb carbon. There is an agenda here. And when the president who you have right here in the back drop has said its not isis, its not terrorism, its not an unsecured border with mexico is that our top National Security concern, its actually Global Warming. According to barack obama. I disagree with that. Not just as sheriff, as an army officer retired, this is why this agenda has come to the state of arizona that will kill thousands of jobs that will not just shut down these coal clean power these power plants that provide us electricity, but it will devastate navajo and apache county. Do you believe that the agenda when you talk about an agenda, that this assault on carbon is really a excuse to tax carbon and to create a revenue is that really what is behind it . Do you believe . I think its an agenda, its a global agenda the president has stated. With what ends . What do they want to accomplish . Initially he is saying its the top National Security concern. This is why keep in mind the backdrop is 95 million americans are not working. Highest number in the history of our country and he is advancing this agenda that will kill jobs, that will dramatically spike our utility rates and its because he theory that Global Warming is the top National Security concern. When we have our competitors like china, like india, who havent had the same measures to combat carbon as we have. So we are putting ourselves again. They are contributing far more to the problem than anyone else. One hand is behind our back and thats not the way to fight. Thats the way to lose jobs. Thats the way to hurt the american taxpayer and its something im against. I will fight it because epa that is rolling this out not through law this is rule making. The Editorial Board in the republic asked me and ohalleran asked me this and bob rob asked the question do you believe the epa has the power to regulate and limit carbon to essentially kill coal. He wouldnt answer the question. I would and i said absolutely not. This is where our executive branch and the Regulatory Agency that have hurt arizona when they make a decisionec of our state land sis privately held. Its an outsized impact and it literally harms our forest, harms our environment with these wildfires and then we see with coal. It literally will unemploy thousands and thousands of people and hurt our state with billions and billions of negative impact. Tick off a couple of the other top issues for you in district 1 that you want to attack if you were to be elected. Here wrist most voters would been hurt or have been killed not just in Law Enforcement but in the military. And when we made a solemn promise to our veterans and thats been broken quite frankly. We had a report this week that the v. A. May in fact not be Getting Better with the changes that they tried to institute but getting worse. And what i like that seems impossible. One way to collapse the v. A. They are very good with prosthesis, with traumatic brain injuries for care. I want to keep that Everything Else quite frankly i want to do away with. Im a veteran saying that. If you called me at 911 at the Sheriffs Office you expect me to show up in five or ten minutes but a veteran here in arizona calls for help, it takes weeks, months a year. Thats unacceptable. I want the veterans of arizona to know and their families that im going 20 fight for them as a fellow veteran and i want a choice card if a veteran cant get in immediately to see a they get he can immediately go to the doctor of their choice in the community. Thats a top issue. The other issue is how about if we secure this border . How about if we enforce the law. Is that a top issue in district one. It still is. There are 14,000 Police Officers in our state that back me. Running for congress. Including the Border Patrol and when we have had this issue, we have been fighting the drug cartels in my county and when you have criminals not 1 million illegals that are here that are here and trying to contribute and make a way for themselves. Im talking about the 84,000 criminals that have been released. What do you do with someone because this is the argument. What do you do with someone who is here illegally and commit not a felony but a misdemeanor. What do you with them okay, they commit a misdemeanor or do we look at this as a potential pattern toward more egregious this is what i have said because a lawman. The law applies to you and i and every other citizen thats watching. The criminals that have been released have on average committed three or four misdemeanors. Some of them serious felonies but they have been released into our community. Talk to where his son on the grant. He sat in this chair. Marianne mendoza. These are not stories from some other state. They are right here. But those crumbinals commit administration has released them into our community. Somehow thinking that bad things arent going to happen. If you were elected and there is a lot that goes into committee assignments. What would be the ones you would want energy and commerce. Why . Because its jobs. Its about power and its about our economy. I want to jump start our economy and the way to do that is not only being on that committee, i will vote to reduce taxes and all of these brackets down to also you see Hillary Clinton talking about the estate tax which is the death tax. If somebody has a farm with shares a lot in arizona or a business and they die and they try to transform. The government gets it. 65 and they have to sell that. Thats unacceptable. We already paid taxes on our income. I want to reduce that and be a part of speaker paul ryans agenda which is good for our country. Good for america. And i want to obamacare. This is a key difference. Because you had my opponent on here he switched not only parties he switched all of his issues. He used to be for the second amendment. The nra endorses me and give him a big question mark because he even refuses to answer. On obamacare, he is the only guy in arizona i ever met that used to be against obamacare and now he defends it and says its the greatest thing. I can tell you this there are 14 of arizonas 15 counties that quote, Affordable Care act. Its not affordable. It was a lie from the beginning that there is no choice. And it got in the way of a doctor we just had a story earlier this week where 60,000 people in Maricopa County just got a letter saying that their provider, they are now down to one. They either go with that one provider or they pay a fee of i think the fine is almost 700 per person in your family if you dont sign up. There is one provider and who is that mandate by the government that government shouldnt be im a conservative. The government shouldnt be involved in this and look whats happened when we did. The government has had to subsidize what that means is you and i and every taxpayer are paying for 50 plus percent of all of these policies and this whole prediction of 21 million americans would sign up, there is only 11 million. I had 12 but. There is more people getting fined 1,000 because they refused to sign up than are we will take a break. When we come back with paul babeu, obviously a lot of this campaign there are questions and you have seen them at night. The ads that have run on our news cast. There are questions in the entire campaign be it donald trump, Hillary Clinton, about judgment. So we will talk to paul babeu about some of the things in his past that have come up in this campaign and give him a chance to talk about those issues. When we come back on newsmaker back on newsmaker sunday. Paul babeu the pinal county sheriff. Its strange to see you out of uniform running for congress. District 1. I got my little badge on here. And my gun right here. The lawman still residing. Lets get into the issue of judgment. Your opponent has brought it up. The desysco school that you ran. It was a private school for troubled youth in massachusetts. You r so here is 30 years the school was open and i was there for two years. The head master. The head master. And here is the whole idea. That they are saying, well, paul was in charge of the school and therefore he is responsible for everything that went on. There was an executive director who was the founder of the school who ran the school and im not saying that in order to get away from that. There are affidavits by the controller, all of these the actually show, look, paul worked there for two years and he ran the business component of the school. Head master didnt have to deal with the discipline of these kids. Or the education. Which included. According to these studies students and chairs facing corners for hours at a time. Strip searches, kids taking group showers. And this is here the investigation. This is 1700 pages. And i dont know if you have fiction on our website sheriff paul. And sky you and anybody else who has questioned to go there because what it will show is at the end of the day because just like in Law Enforcement just because somebody calls the cops doesnt mean that everything they say is true. We dont just arrest the person because they say arrest that person. We have to find out what went on. That investigation which started years before i arrived at the school. I was there two years and ended you know how many times it mentioned me . Three times. Once because the controller said i had a car. And two other times because i was copied on a letter. Bottom line. I wasnt interviewed. I wasnt deposed. And you know what . Of all of those people who were deposed. Guess what happened. Nobody was found responsible at all. They gave a license to the school. This is all a political attack thats brought up from 16, 20 years ago. And sensational right now. Master this guy is running the show. He is the main guy. Should you have known what was going on . Not only i knew the philosophy of the school. Tough love. And i mean. This is what it really is. This is a school thats the last resort. Costs 67,000 a year to attend there. These are very well healed kids of well healed parents. Or they needs an iep, an individual ed plan. There were six therapists at the psychiatrist. It gives you a sense of what type of school it was. I never made nor would i make today any medical decisions or behavioral actions. What the about the discipline stuff . None of it. Thats proven in the investigation. You werent aware any of this stuff was going on. Thats kind of the basis of the school was. Beat these kids down and break them a little bit. Here is the idea. The foremost forensic psychologists in massachusetts that was used as a witness by the state in has an affidavit in here saying all of these methods that the school used and keep in mind its 16, 20 years ago are all within the norms of a therapeutic environment. And thats the case. If there was something that went on, wouldnt somebody have been held accountable . Absolutely. I wasnt in there. This is they are bringing this out just before an election and here have been sheriff eight years and they are rolling this instead of talking about the real issues. But since its out there, the public wants to know and hear from you. The other one was when you ran for district 4 which was really your back yard, pinal county. Ran for district 4 in 2000 in 2012. You with drew when it came out that you had a gay relationship with a guy who was a staffer on your campaign, is that fair . Volunteer. And this is where weve talked about this here on your s and here at that pinal county is actually split into two Congressional Districts and just to make that clear. Where i live i live in casa grande which is in this district which will represent district 1. And so here all of that again false allegations in order to put out it wasnt a big secret. People knew that i was gay. I always said it i shun be measured or judged by that. I agree. I never hid that. And you know why . I was concerned and fearful at the time how people would respond. To my surprise and that overwhelmed people said it doesnt matter. This is liberating. Was very liberating back four years ago. And know what was proven at the end of the day i had to ask for an investigation to clear my good name because it was used as weapon against me. The allegation at the time was you threatened to deport this young man. You tell me and you told me before that the stories in the press were that this young man was here illegally and he was here legally. Thats your contention. Not just my contention. You didnt threaten to deport him. The investigation showed that he was here legally. He maintained that. His attorney maintained that and i did. Never threatened to deport him. All old news and i said that countless times on your show and investigation and the words they used exonerated. Thats rarely used in Law Enforcement. This kind of permeates the entire election, questions of judgment, trump, hillary, of you, of others. What would you say to voters who say i like this babeu but have questions about this stuff. Here is the thing. My entire life i served in uniform, 14 years in Law Enforcement. 20 years in the military. My judgment and saving lives, i have life saving medals. Serving and being decorated in Law Enforcement and the military. Never has my judgment been questioned except at election time and this shows you it smacks of a political attack when these come out and these awful things and sensational things are brought up. They are personal smears. Anything you take back, i asked donald trump, this anything you take back . Any doovers. Boy, paul when you talk to i think if i came out my myself earlier and i didnt think it was peoples business to know im gay, i want to be judged on my own merit, my own performance, my contributions to our community and country, thats what i believe. Other people are different and they wear it on their sleeves or are more active and they talk about it often. I want to be judged on what i do to help other people and i wish knowing all this and how it was used against wished i had come out and said, you know, this is my philosophy. I shouldnt be judged on this but i want to share this. I never lied about it and thats where i think people i was overwhelmingly reelected and its because i was honest about that. Lets circle back to something. I want to get into this election for a moment. You were there, tape number five, i want to get your take on donald trump. You were at his rally in prescott. I spoke. Whats your take on donald trump . You support him. I have none so i have to appreciate have you gotten to know him a little bit . Through meeting and talking. And your sense of the man . He was to me he was not only genuine he was kind. I introduced myself. I said mr. Trump, im paul babeu. I know who you are. I watch you on fox news and you are more famous than me. It made me red and embarrassed and he was a real gentlemen was affable and treated everybody politely. Now what i do like about him is that he is not the past eight years. Whats going on and what has gone on, the very reason why im running for congress is we need a change. We need to strengthen our country. Not just our military, but our economy. The way to do this is not defy the proud history of our nation as a free market and capitalism, its to embrace those principles and donald trump brings that. I dont agree with it you names. You know i can be hard on a number of issues. Immigration is one. But im soft on the edges. And i go after the criminals. I go after the cartels. I want to secure the border. As you said you arent raiding farms or ag workers or anything like that. Or government buildings. I actually commanded soldiers at our border and reduced illegal entries in yuma. Got to take a break. Congressional district 1 as a republican candidate against Tom Ohalleran the democrat. Election day is coming. Early voting is starting. Election day november 8. We are back in a minute on paul babeu, republican, you know him as the pinal county sheriff. What does that experience being pinal county sheriff have to do with running for congress now . I cant screw up as a sheriff because p the line. Imagine having elected officials who actually do what they say. And thats where going to washington, my budget has been cut in the last three years 9 . So you had to make due with less. I had a surplus last year. Novel concept in government and this the difference. My opponent, Tom Ohalleran was fired from his job when he was in Yavapai County as legislator because he voted for 64 budget napolitano. Remember we had to sell the state capitol. The legislature, all of these government buildings we had more debt per capita than california. This guy was a part of that. The first month he was in office he he was a republican or a republican turned independent turned democrat, you think he has left. Certainly on spending he has always been for overspending and he thinks by taxing and spending is somehow going to our economy. 15 seconds. What does that race come down to . As a lawman, as an army veteran i want to protect our country. You can say all these salacious attacks that are coming at election time, they are false. People know me and know that i will fight for them. Paul babeu. Good to see you. Good luck in Congressional District one. We will keep an eye on it as we will all of these races. Good morning.
