Marty . Thank you. California law bans the sale of sharks for soup, but theres still sales. The first major bust under the law passed back in 2011, 2,000 pounds of shark fins, and theres a big reason now cracking down. First, the main way these fins are caught, some say is inhumane. The fins are sliced off while the shark is alive and then then dropped back in the ocean and they either suffocate or fall prey to predators. Also, sharks are very slow to reproduce and conservation experts say their numbers are falling, and that could disrupt our oceans ecosystem. So why is this practice continuing . Kim mcnichols says at this time the high value of the shark fin, that makes the job attractive to struggling fishermen. Shes with a documentary that just received the Conservation Award at the festival. Kim . Yes, im with stephanie, what really struck me about this film, it was au inspiring to awe inspiring to see you one with these type of sharks, some of the fiercest or perceive them as some of the fiercest predators in the ocean. How in the world did you do this . It was a career that sort of chose me, i wanted to be close to animals and when i discovered scuba diving, i discovered the ocean was the true wilderness. I wanted to train animals as a child, lions, elephants, and then i realized in the ocean is really where the wilderness is. All the usual scuba diving got me closer and closer to sharks and then through a lot of experience i became comfortable with them and then it sort of became a profession. But how do you convince people in terms of, i guess your passion for sharks and your experience with sharks, but there are all kinds of fish out there, fishing all the time. Why save the sharks versus salmon or tuna or anything else out there . Salmon and tuna, for example, they reproduce very quickly, thousands and millions of eggs every year starting from one year on, sharks on the other hand reproduce extremely slowly, they have to be very often in most species, in their teenage years before they can have young and few every year or every other year. Theyre not really an animal that replenishes quickly, they evolved as a predator, not to be a prey item. So to fish them is to prey on them is not really in the scheme of the natural balance. Do you actually, you know, fish for these sharks, and shark finning, its a livelihood for many people. Its their job, what actually puts food on their own tables. Shark fins are one of the highly valued seafood, how do you convince them not to do this . Well, you know, fishing is an important job and an important profession, its a tough profession and it will probably become even tougher as the fish population decrease and as regulations get stricter and stricter every year. So, it is a tough profession. And shark fins are very tempting item to add to your catch because it is a bonus item. Usually not the targeted species, tuna or something else, and theyre an added bonus. But what has to be considered is that you can make that catch now and really hurt yourself in the future because its all about sustainability, sustainable seafood, not just sustainable so were keeping the ocean pretty, its something that we have to eat down the line, when youre overfishing sharks now, youre hurting most of the fish populations that you would like to fish years from now because youre taking away one of the regulating items, the regulating members of the food chain. So whats really the solution here . Is it really on the side of the fishermen or the side of the market . The highest, most effective way would be to slow down or stop the demand for fins because if nobody wants to buy fins, then there would be no reason to take them. And it wouldnt have to be a cruelty item or overfishing item at all. Most people dont really want to bother catching sharks unless me make money off the fins because most sharks are not good to eat and theyre full of mercury and a list of reasons why sharks are not that easy to fish or not that popular to fish. But as long as the high priced value is there for a fin, its good to keep sharks, even if taits bicatch and they use to do let them go, return to the ocean, it makes them valuable to keep them and throw the rest back into the ocean. In terms of livelihood, there are options, i was watching the film at the San Francisco film festival, and ecotourism is an option. Yeah. In areas with tourism, they have found, its been proven by research and collecting data, you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars off of one shark over the lifetime of that shark whereas you would only make 100 one time killing it and selling it for its fins. Because of the money people would pay to come see wild life and that includes sharks. So wherever, its possible, job being developed, whale, shark diving, actually provides so much more jobs to a community than fishing. Fishing, thats 10 jobs whereas if you have a scuba industry or visitors industry, thats 100 jobs. Individually that one person make not that much money but the community makes more money. And its renewable. Thank you so much, stephanie. If you want to learn more, its extinction soup movie. Thank you and congratulations on winning that award. Well be right back. You can see we have a system to the north of us. It is going to sag south later today. We have showers in the forecast. So were going to see an increasing cloud cover through the day. We have the system starting off in the north bay going into the overnight hours. You can see it will taper off by late morning tomorrow making way for clear, sunny skies and a warming trend. Before we get to your extended forecast, lets talk current temperatures. 57 degrees in richmond. 57 in daly city. Upper 50s in San Francisco. 55 degrees in half moon bay. Into the afternoon, were expecting cloudy skies but slightly warmer temperatures for the south bay. 73 in santa clara. 79 for freemont. And wereing at 60s and 70s across the area. 72 for walnut creek. 73 in San Francisco. 73 in oakland. Mainly 60s for the north bay. So once the system passes , were expecting dry and warmer conditions for the rest of the work week. Lots of sunshine into next weekend. Were talking all things political right now. We want to bring in michael to talk about that. Well start in ukraine with a situation just continues to get worse and worse. Right. And congress is now rushing to come up with sanctions on what theyre going to do to try and hit russia hard. What is it that congress can actually do . Economic trade. And past legislations. Theyve done stuff to restrict the amount of infest that russia can make and freeze bank accounts. But a lot of this is symbolic at this point. The big question is, is putin playing for time to allow the russian separatists to essentially create a separate i think what you have is are people trying to make an analogy, and what the russians are not saying out loud is more like, what happened with ucoslavia in the 1990s and back in 1996 which was american intervention. Do you think this will be as bloody as that . I have a feeling there will be some blood shed. The question is whether the separatists do something that the russians may think is a step too far, but provokes a reaction back. Then you might see russia get involved. Right now you see a lot of unmarked uniforms and tanks running around, and theyre letting the prorussian militants basically terrorize them into knuckling. And theyre hoping to serve fashion with the without it getting too messy. What was your reaction to Hilary Clinton comparing putin with hitlers germany . I dont think she overstepped her bounds. I think everyone sort of jumped on the hitler analogy when she never really mentioned hitler, she just mentioned germany. But i dont know if putin may or may not have those desires to bring the band back together, but theres a ring of problems for him in that so many of the old soviet states have gone over to that site. 10 are in nato right now. This is one example of a buffer back, especially with the black sea in total control. I dont know for sure. But certainly what putin is doing is hes playing it very low key and trying to create a situation for a break away, and keep it in that kind in that kind of niche so the u. S. Wont be tempted to do anything more and then let the sort of selfrule work itself out. So hes able to say, its the will of the people. Right. Which is something we have a hard time swallowing, but weve done the same thing in other places as well. Clearly the russians have worked to provoke it, but whether or not in the end buying for time and letting the russian separatists make the case for secession is going to be much harder for the u. S. To combat. In the meantime, we watch for the vote which is scheduled for march 17. Well continue to talk about the bay bridge yeah. Separating. The continuing e of the leaks. Whats interesting to me, i think we were on a month ago. I said, why dont they take a fire hose and put it on the bridge . Apparently, just it was reported they did just that. They found multiple leaks, and theyre not sure exactly where they all came from. For a 6. 4 billion bridge, and something all of us paid for time and time again, its inexcusable. I dont understand where the outrage is in terms of the elected officials. A little bit here and there, but not asking if an audit of whats going on and whether or not these contracts cut corners. Did anything to jeopardize the safety and the people who drive across it. Id like to see more people in elected office get a little exercise and demand answers that all of us want to know. Were going to be paying for these fixes for god knows how long. I dont know why there is not outrage. Im not there. Well be right back. [uncle]this is hopscotch, okay . Uncle go one, two, one, two, one two, one. [niece]okay [uncle]okay . [niece]one, two three, four, five, six, seven, eight [uncle laughing] okay,we go the other way, okay . Well, did you know the ancient pyramids were actually a mistake . Uhoh. Geico. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance.
