That folks stormed onto a School Campus with guns, a shooting. And with the intent to do harm, oakland city Councilmember Loren Taylor says hes frustrated by the continued gun violence in the city but thankful wednesdays shooting hasnt turned deadly. He says 3 of the victims remain in the hospital, but theres progress. The 2 victims who are Critical Condition are now stable and lee. So that is. Comforting Oakland Police say on the 6 people shot to our students. One is a school counselor. Another is a Security Guard into worked at the school, usd carpenter, jason arbuckle. Hes been in touch with kron. 4 news in was understandably too tired to talk with us on camera after just being released from the hospital. Arbuckle says its a miracle hes alive and was able to go back home on thursday. He says he was installing a trophy display case on the wall at the time of the shooting. We also learned from Council Member taylor that the Security Guard on king estate campus helped save students. The Security Guard you know, hes been on site that he was wounded, shot in the leg and that through acts of heroism and bravery went to, you know, protect others despite being injured and even applying cpr to one of the the victims late thursday evening. Bay area tech posted an update on its social media page saying the Security Guard is staying strong. Meanwhile, little to no information has been released about the other 4 victims, something glenn upshaw senior with Community Organization youth alive says his unusual normally when get situations like this, we do give referrals and were able to meet with victims. Are even were able to identify who may be the shooter was or who the victims are. In this case, we have not anyone concrete and is really interesting because hes really been has has still no information has been released about the 2 shooters and no arrests have been made. Im Taylor Bisacky reporting kron. 4 news in the wake of another School Shooting in oakland. At least one city Council Member says hes reconsidering the idea of police on school grounds. Back in 2020, the Oakland Unified School District Board of education disbanded its School Police department. The district now employees what they call culture keepers previously just called Security Guards who perform a number of tasks, including maintaining order and safety. Today Council Member Lauren Taylor told us it may be time for another change. My conversation with the staff from the district is to have dedicated officers from the Police Department that are focused on the schools. Theyre ready to respond. So we get that this the Safety Security support without the overhead of an independent department. We first posed the question about School Police after last months shooting at james madison. Middle school Councilmember Sean callow said that she opposes putting more guns in schools. Councilmember treva reid says that that conversation should be had with parents. This latest shooting is highlighting a growing and troubling trend at oaklands highland hospital. The Trauma Center there where 3 of the 6 victims are being treated tonight. You see this graph and according to data from the Alameda Health system, the trauma team there on average back in 2018 treated. 23 gunshot wounds a month in 2021. Know, look at this thing. The explosion of gunfire steps away from classrooms at east oaklands states campus sent 3 of the most seriously injured victims to highland t hospital. Now as patients, they become part of a disturbing trend. The skyrocketing number of people being treated for gunshot wounds. You know, were seeing in 2018 were 23 gunshot wounds the month, 2019. 24 so very similar. There was a spike in jumped in 2020 to 40 a month 2021, we saw a 46 month and this year, one that pays to see 44 months for the year. So, you know, really what we said that its not an exaggeration. James jackson is the ceo of Alameda Health system, which has 760 positions on 9 facilities. Highland hospital is the systems highest ranked Trauma Center in 2018. We 278 gunshot 2019, 283. So again, very comparable. And then the spike in 2020, we saw 478 2021. 547 and were on a page to see similar numbers in 2022. Jackson says what the numbers dont show is the emotional and physical fallout of gunshot wounds. He says recovery can be very complicated. We obviously our business is helping people when they are in need. And when they have these sorts of injuries. But i think we can do to see. The menlo park Fire Protection district are members of the California Task force. The team is funded by fema and response to disasters around the world. So that is very highly populated area, very dangerous for hurricane to come across there. Still sustained possibly making landfall. 85 miles an hour. Ive seen some things now let me believe that it may intensify just before it makes landfall may be coming on shore just north of charleston and south of myrtle beach. Theyre suspected of running to braunfels one on bassett street near island park. The other on winterberry avenue off. I280, a Human Trafficking task force served both search warrants after getting tips from neighbors who noticed suspicious trends. Investigators say one of the men arrested operated a brothel in the past during the search. Police say for Human Trafficking victims, all women were provided with resources to help them escape that life. The suit accuses them of lax oversight of the utility Safety Measures prior to the 2017 north bay fire storm and the 2018 camp fire in paradise. The settlement was announced by the pg and e Fire Victim Trust which compensates victims of fires that the parent of pg and e started between 2015 2018. A lawyer for the trust said the settlement was among the largest of its type and the money will be used to pay most of the claims held by federal agencies that helped battle the fires. The north bay fires caused at least 44 deaths and burned more than 245,000 acres. The second lawsuit has been filed against the atria partner sing home in san mateo after resident. Todays grand jury indictment brings 2 additional charges of abusing the same woman as well as 3 charges relating to 2 other female prisoners. The south bay Police Arrested a middle School Teacher for sending messages to a student. 29 yearold trey Devontae Owens taught it Herbert Hoover middle school in san jose. Hes accused of sending messages on social media to a female student at Abraham Lincoln high. Police say and allegedly asked the student to send him inappropriate images and made plans to pick the student. Not officers learned about this last friday and arrested islands at his home in hollister on sunday. And police offered a warning to parents and to caregivers about kids using social media. Yeah, i can see more of a northerly component. The winds around the bay area that is going to send those temperatures soaring outside. In fact, numbers tomorrow afternoon, San Francisco looking 60s and 70s by tomorrow afternoon. Beautiful about 73 downtown. 74 in the mission. 64 degrees in Half Moon Bay inside the bay. Those numbers warm up in a hurry. Lots of 80s. You make your way down the middle. A peninsula and then 80s pushing 90 degrees in the south bay. Think the east bay, you see a couple 90s by tomorrow afternoon. Little hot spots.
