The first told you about this empty homes tax back in june, but some newly released data reveals there are many more vacant homes. In the city than originally estimated kron fours. Taylor bisacky explains. Hes a pretty jump vacancies. And its not surprising, but its very concerning. According to last years Census Bureau estimates just released. There are 58,000 beacon units in San Francisco. Thats up almost 18,000 units from 2019, San Francisco supervisor. Dean preston says those numbers highlight the need to fill empty Housing Units in the city. I think we all agree. We need more places for people to live. We all know we have a homelessness crisis in the city. About 10,000 people who nowhere to stay. The new numbers also include homes that were listed for sale or rent. Meanwhile, januarys Analyst Report found that nearly 8,000 empty homes for those that were sold but not occupied. However, preston expects that number to be larger. Now, if approved, he says the tax could make more than 5,000 vacant Units Available over a twoyear period. This is the strongest tool that we have as a city. To try to force the big investors that are holding these properties off the market to either rent them out to tenants or sell them to people who want to let their the proposed tax would range from 2500 to 5,000 in the first year. And would increase each year up to a max of 20,000. The tax is projected to generate more than 38 Million Dollars in annual revenue, which would be split between 2 housing goals in the city as Campaign Manager for the empty homes tax known as prop and pat cochran explains any money we raise from it will go towards, you know. House and then rental subsidies for lowincome families and seniors, owners of vacant homes and buildings with 3 or more units would be subject to the tax of a unit is vacant for more than half the year. Singlefamily homes and duplexes would be exempt. This empty homes tax only goes after prolonged vacancies. So a lot of seople are worried. You know, they said, you know, its a couple things empty theres all kinds of epairs. A provisions to make sure that those kind of good faith vacancies are not whats going to be tax owners will have the choice to decide yes or no in november. Talk to us a little bit about how this rain helped fire fight. Okay. Yeah. Its definitely going to help and hinder fire crews because on the one hand its going to help put out the flames. But because of all of that charred grass. It doesnt have the roots to hold it in place with that soil. So we are going to see popup thunderstorms with heavy downpours. That could actually create ash and debris flows where that mosquito burn scar is burning. So lets take a look at your air quality out there right now because those scattered showers really helping to clean up the air. Snow showers possibly making its way near that truckee area in south lake tahoe. Bear valley could see some cells forming there, but we are going to notice a lot of moisture just to the west of this year where that mosquito fire is burning very active there. So we are going to keep an eye on that because as you can see, theyre going to get a lot of light to moderate rain and popup thunderstorms that are slated to form on tuesday could give us those quick heavy downpour. So thats what were expecting on tuesday. Thats going to be the most severe, an active day for this year up with showers continuing on wednesday with midfifties in the forecast in the coming days.
