They finally released a statement explaining a little bit about what i just told you. And they also said theyre going to give us an update later this morning from police headquarters, of course, will bring bring you the latest once they provide it. But what crazy morning for this family. Its just so scary to even find out that someone was in your home, let alone brutally attacked your husband. And earlier this morning, we had a chance to speak with security expert ron brooks with the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center asked him a few questions about. This whole situation. Lets play a little bit of what he had to say. Ron, thank you so much for joining us this morning. Were hearing the story about this attack of the speakers husband. And it sort of brings to mind the sweat level that a lot of not only politicians but election workers are facing right now as were heading toward the midterm elections. What youre for first reaction when you heard the story this morning. Yeah, know, obviously this is a tragedy for the pelosi family personally not good for public safety. It in our community. But it is a sign of the times that we have seen a dramatic polarization of both sides of the left and the right. The attacks on january 6 that weve seen attacks on houses of worship in schools in the whole political process, especially as we come up to the midterm elections has gotten very polarized with a lot of radical activity, especially from the radical right . How are they guarded has since you do this kind of work . How is a politicians home at the level of nancy pelosi, whether or not shes in it, she wasnt in the home, but do they have special security to the cops keeping extra watch because they obviously responded very quickly. Yes, so i mean, the security for the speaker of the house is provided by the United States Capitol Police and she has a detail. A security detail much like the president s detail. But but that the secret service, its Capitol Police, 24 7, wherever she is at the capitol. Police also do a security assessment on her homes. They are office it where shes at they provide suggestions for alarms and cameras. But that part of it is up to the speaker personally. And they coordinate so that the police no those homes and have a response pattern and they coordinate the response. So shes not at all. Probably no security detail because she was not but long worked out agreements with the Services School Police Department. So as well, and weve been hearing reports recently of the fbi warning of uptick of potential violence as we head towards the midterm elections and theres a lot of agencies that are trying to coordinate right now to keep everybody safe. Especially poll poll workers as youve advised different agencies over 38 year career in Law Enforcement. What do you think are some of the protocols are putting into place or what our Law Enforcement officers being told as were heading into what is a very contentious midterm election. Yeah, i mean, theres that weve try to do a lot of briefing to make sure Law Enforcement is aware those threats and through of my old agency, the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center park, which is part of the National Network Fusion Centers. 80 Fusion Centers around the country coordinating with the fbi coordinating with dhs intelligence analysis and the other components of federal, state and local Law Enforcement. The biggest thing is just information. Sure, you know, understanding, you know, when we hear about these threats, sure that information. And finally, you know, for the public, it you know, after 9. 11, we begin to see something Say Something campaign, but that applies not just the terrorism that applies to every day threats to our community, whether its crime, threats were or threats against our democracy like this. If you hear about something, if you see something, if you if something concerns you make sure to let Law Enforcement know. Crazy thing is like what lake . What more lanes can you go to to protect politicians . Because, you know, aside from living behind a moat and a giant wall, i mean that home below sea is home is just right on a San Francisco street of somebody broke into the queen of englands, you know, palace before you can just we showed you windows, you could throw a rock theres no way to protect against this any situation. Well, i mean, certainly we was stoush police when the when the the the the current Congressional Baseball Team was attacked. They had a security detail there that Capitol Police are get. That attacker was so brazen. He still i managed to shoot mister now. So weve also seen reports, too, about, as you mentioned, you know, some of the extremists on the far right showing up at poll places. People are bringing their early voting in some cases armed as they in their mind are observing. Theyre watching. Theyre protecting these polling places. But from the other perspective, you know, it is a little bit intimidating and that puts Law Enforcement in a pretty tough situation having to sort of straddle that line between protecting rights on both sites. Well, it does its in many of the states for they have open carry laws. Theyre not breaking any laws by having those weapons. And unless the state is enacted a law that that builds a buffer between the polling zone. It where people could be most states to but it. But you know, as long as theyre just outside of that buffer zone, theyre not breaking any laws. So its its terrible that we intimidate the democratic process that people do. But obviously the police can only take action when a law was broken out. We have we have a little more time. So just want to go over once again. What happened in the Early Morning . Dark somebody broke into pelosis house. Nancy pelosi wasnt there. Her husband was attacked and the Police Showed up so quickly they were able to catch the guy. Pelosi. It seems like hes going to be okay, but it does beg the question. You said that the Capitol Police are only there when pelosi is there. And when the politicians actually there. So, you know, can they or should they hire private security just to stand out there at all hours of the day to prevent to well, in in, if they if there no threat, im sure the Capitol Police would you know it any re question speaker she had wanted. Security there because, you know, Capitol Police officers are because of a known threat they would have. Im sure shes always cognizant of the, you know, the budget requireuents. What that cost but in this day and age, you know, with with all you just think its always kind of youre always a target. So why not go to the expense . Even if you have to do it out of your own pocket . Maybe. Sure. Sure. It. You know, the have the probably have the financial wherewithal if they wanted to. The sad thing is many of our politicians, you know, are are really citizen politicians that the dont have, you know, a lot of financial means and in that becomes a problem in the only the leadership of the Congress Gets a security detail. So the rest of these members and we saw that the Gabby Giffords incident, theyre out there meeting with the community. Theyre doing their jobs are Holding Town Halls are meeting with constituents and theyre vulnerable. And thats always a concern. And look what happened with the Gabby Giffords at one of her Campaign Events were seen politicians like you said. Not just in their homes, but theyre out and about there. There are also coordinating the investigation right now. You can see there cystic with the federal bureau, the fbi and the San Francisco police is a joint investigation. One of the first to arrive on scene. So they do have some of their people on scene right now. This is a woman who lives across the street printed. Tell me how did you feel when you heard about this because you didnt wake up to any sounds or anything . No, i didnt hear anything. And usually i feel pretty safe because the have a neighborhood security beach. And a stay on that corner office. God, im broad bay entire night in case of any. Sudden became called and i dare there and i will cobb. I see all that and police cars i feel very scared. Very sad about what has happened to paul and i didnt know know how it could have happened to. You said you were shocked because theres security here. Exactly. And and see them on nights because they started on 06 00pm and a goat hill. 06 00am. Its a shocking. Yeah, its era that was a great interview had with one of the neighbors there who knew the pelosis want to come back out to live there at the scene where last time we checked with the 2, we also saw fbi agents backed by the house conducted part of the investigation. Is there still some activity up there as well . Yes, an active scene here in this Pacific Heights neighborhood. We just heard from a woman who lives across the street from the pelosi. She said shes very concerned about this. She knows paul well and she wishes him a speedy recovery. In the meantime, as you said, fbi is out here. They got here around 7 oclock this morning. And we also, of course, you have seen San Francisco police out here since this all started. Theyve been out here investigating why someone would break into the pelosi home. Its just been quite the scene. We know that this happened around 2. 30, this morning when someone broke into the San Francisco pelosi home one in and proceeded to beat paul pelosi with a hammer. Apparently he got some severe injuries, bruising, swelling. They brought him to the hospital for those injuries where he has been treated and he continues to be treated as we speak. In the meantime, of course, the pelosi family reeling from this. The entire nation wishing them well. Even President Biden saying he called pelosi in self to see if they were ok, nancy pelosi. She was not here during the attack. Shes not even in the stages in washington, d. C. , and we know sources are saying this is a targeted attack. So paul pelosi, 82 years old, was targeted by his attacker. And now were just waiting to find out who this attack or is that person was arrested quickly and is in custody right now. And were expecting to get an update from police at 9. 30 this morning. Hopefully they find they tell us a bit more information about who they arrested. As you just heard from the woman who lives across the street from the pelosi as she told us what shes saying right from her own account. She said that the neighborhood here has security. Just for the homes here because they said theyve seen a few people, the been sketchy around their neighborhood. So they want to have their own security. And she said usually that Security Guard sits on the street here and she surprised that someone was even able to break into the pelosi home. Thats one of the big remaining questions. How is someone able to break in and actually physically an attack . Paul, that is the question. But clearly theyre able to find the person and arrest them quickly. But yeah, darya james, a very active scene out here and were looking forward to that update from sfpd at 9. 30. Well, it does explain how there was such a quick response, right . Because they do have private security there in because 02 30am, in the morning. If somebody breaks in and theyre attacking you. The attack of paul pelosi, Speaker Nancy Pelosi is has been in their San Francisco home right around 2. 30 this morning. Yeah. And we know that hes recovering in the hospital nancy pelosi is in washington, d. C. , so we want to go to dc right now. With a reporter for the hill to hear more about what nancy pelosi is going to be doing what what happens . Michael snow joining us live this morning. Michael, good morning. I saw that. You you. You wrote an article earlier kind of walking people through the events of what happened. Thats right. So theres still a lot thats unknown. But what we do know right now is that San Francisco Police Department responded to an attack at a residence, a breakin at a resident at 02 27am. Local time. And then early this morning, Speaker Pelosi spokesperson put out a statement saying that paul pelosi, the husband of Speaker Pelosi, was violently attacked by an assailant in in residents in San Francisco, paul pelosi was taken to a hospital and hes being treated right now and hes expected to make a full recovery. Thats what the pelosi spokesperson has said. Capitol police noted in a separate statement that the speaker was in washington, d. C. , overnight with her protective detail when this attack took place. So again, theres still a lot unknown. The motive is unknown, though. The suspect is in custody, according to authorities. Like i know, the speaker has several events planned for today. Have you had a word from her office as to whether thats cancel now she heading back to the city. We have not heard from the from the speaker directly today or from her spokesperson regarding what shes going to do and her she is scheduled to be an event thats begin event tomorrow with the Vice President , kamala harris, that we have not heard of. That will be changed. Our its still going on. So right now, business as usual. But again, were all waiting to see if we can learn more. And when we learn more about whats going on, the course how the speaker will be reactive and we wonder if it will be business as usual on the hill, which you cover because members of congress have gotten additional money. In the past few years for security. But this is sure to have him caught, you know, clamoring for more to protect them and their families as were nearing the election, were seeing more threats against politicians and elected officials. Thats right. According to u. S. Capitol Police Threats against lawmakers and and and messages of concern have rapidly increased over the past years. Last year it was around back in 2017 about around 3,000. For the year. So again, weve seen this steady increase in threats against lawmakers. And as you mentioned over the summer, the house sergeant at arms had announced the eu Security Program that would give 10,000 to each Congressional Office to protect the residences. With that security but again, this will be this will likely make more calls for an up and security for lawmakers and their family. Just because were seeing this increase threats against members of congress and another lawmakers. All right. So wait to see if that develops. And, yeah, michael. And then if im sure you talk to your colleagues who cover other. A political figures there in washington as everybody else sort of reporting the same thing that theres just sort of this been uptick i dont call it hate speech, but an uptick in violence speech to be sure against people in politics. People connected even tangentially with the elections. Absolutely. It does need take a journalist or a politician themselves to realize that the political writer, rick, has become more debate divisive over past years. Weve seen more attacks launched more squabbling between them. That, of course, could have an impact on threats that seeing against lawmakers. But again, it doesnt take some of these inside the beltway to realize that there has been up in this political this political rhetoric and this divisiveness, which were now could really have damaging effects.
