Weve heard this building now in ruins was the center of constant safety complaints before the fatal fire erupted so the oakland mayor tells us shes come up with a plan to combat a huge demand for fire inspection and a lack of staff. Oakland mayor libby schaaf is doubling the number of fire inspectors adding six more in light of two fatal fires in recent months. Libby schaaf, oakland mayor and while we wait to get those people in place we are reassigning existing staff so we can fast track more problem Property Inspections as well as ensure that all of our annual inspections are up to date. The latest fire erupted monday morning on san pablo avenue claiming the lives of four and displacing close to 100 people. I am extremely disturbed to see some of the communications that happen prior to the fire. My heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones in that fire. The effort is part of a fire Safety Inspection overhaul ordered by the mayor. The plan is meant to enhance Fire Prevention training and tools while priortizing problem properties. To stay on top of these critical safety needs and ensure that unscrupulous landlords are not putting profits over safety. There was water leaking down from the ceiling from the bathroom of the second floor coming down to the first floor. There were exposed wires. Cook has been representing urojas ever since eviction attempts by the buildings owner, keith kim, began in december. Kim claimed the Master Tenant owed him unpaid rent. This was around the same time the city inspection found the deplorable conditions. If some of the issues were fixed that we were in dispute about, maybe the devastation wouldnt have been so bad. But neither cook, nor the law firm he works for, will be taking on victims and their families as clients he says it would be a confllict of interest, because those suits could very well list urojas as a defendant in addition to the owner. There could be potential lawsuits by some of the victims, by some of the families of the victims, but i dont know that for sure. I dont know whos gonna sue who.
