We begin with breaking news from florida this morning. Seven people are dead including the gunman following a shootout at an apartment complex in hialeah. We have the latest. Reporter police are calling what happened in this south florida neighborhood possibly the deadliest mass shooting in the city of hialeah. Seven people are dead including the gunman. The s. W. A. T. Team took the man down in a hail of gunfire after eight hours of terror. He attacked his first victims after 6 30 friday evening and eventually took two hostaging before barricading himself inside an apartment. Police are working to see if the victims were targeted or if this is the act of a random act of man who snapped. His identity has nod been released. 20 hours later neighbored remain outside trying to get home. Wu multiple crime scenes still yet to process it could be a while before they get the all clear. Were also following the breaking news on the political turmoil in egypt. Dozens of people are dead after huge protests pitted supporters against ousted president Mohamed Morsi by the army. They have been in cairo and Clarissa Ward is there with the latest. Good morning to you, clarissa. Reporter good morning to you, vinita and anthony. They say 20 people were killed when police tried to disperse a group of promorsi supporters who were trying to block a bridge. This does not gel jell what we just saw. We saw with our own eyes at least 39 dead bodies. They were being stored in a makeshift morgue. Doctors had attempted to treat them at this makeshift clinic. We spoke to the doctor in charge. He told us almost all of the victims had been hit by gunshot wounds in the face head neck and heart. That also jells with some of the wounds we saw as the bodies were being carried out of the mosque compound. People were chanting down with the military regime. They were shrieking, clearly incredibly upset trying to wrap their heads around why the country would use such brutal force. The clashes began at 3 00 a. M. He said the military, the police, and what he termed as civilian thugs were all involved in these clashes and that live ammunition was used against the promorsi supporters. Again, we saw with our own eyes at least 39 bodies in this morgue. It was a horrifying scene, incredibly bloody people leaping over the bodies of their loved ones just a horrifying scene. Yes. Truly terrible images. Clarissa ward in cairo this morning. Thank you. Now to the grim case of ariel castro the cleveland man charged with holding three women in his home. The judge made certain he will never be freed from prison. Terrell brown is here with more. Good morning, terrell. By accepting the deal castro will face life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 1,000 years, and we know this morning that one of his victims is set to testify at his sentencing this week. For much of the hearing the judge addressed castro directly. A plea agreement has been reached in this matter. Are you fully aware of the terms and do you consent to that plea agreement. Reporter the judge asked Arielle Castro if he under the consequences to pleading guilty to 937 criminal counts. Do you think theres any hope of getting out of prison before you die. I dont think so. Reporter the former bus driver did not speak about his three victims. Instead castro tried to explain he was a victim of his own demons. My addiction to pornography and my sexual problem has really taken a toll on my mind. This man is going to prison for the rest of his life. Hes never coming out except nailed in a box. Many times during the hearing today castro painted himself as the victim. What do you think about that . I think hes a coward and he feels sorry for one person and one person only. Himself. Its an act. He started punching Michelle Knight until she had a miscarriage. Theyre satisfied by the resolution to the case. Knight thanked the public for the support. And next weeks sentencing hearing we hear prosecutors plan to bring chains used by castro to restrain the women. The police chief says garzon is being arrested for criminal bash and what he calls wrecknessless in the crash that killed 78 people and injured many more. They recovered the black box. Whats known is that the express train shot into a sharp turn at more than twice the speed limit, hurdling carriages off the rails and slamming them into a smnlt wall at 120 miles an hour. Local media reports that garzon had received orders to cut the speed and he acknowledged it by pushing the button. Whats not clear is whether he was unable to apply the brakes. A third of the passengers on the train have died 306789 more remain in critical condition, most in a coma. In a leaked report the driver admitting to going too fast. And rescuers said when he realized the reality of the accident he said i bleeped this up, i want to die. National security is trying to use Surveillance Video to find out who the vandals were. Reporter workers powerwashed green paint away from lincolns base, chair, base and lap. You stop. You look at it. You cant believe somebody would do that. Reporter the vandalism was discovered by a tourist at about 1 30 in the morning. There are surveillance cameras that could identify who was on the tape. From a personal aspect i cant believe someone would do this, this breaks my heart. Especially on the 50th anniversary. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the war. It was cause for an enormous military parade to be held in the capital city pyongyang. North koreas leader kim jongun was at the center of it all, reviewed sites. The tanks and the ar tilley rolling down the streets were rem isnt of sovietstyle. That principle of selfreliance was on display today. The korean war is called the father land of liberation war. While much considers it ended in a stalemate, the North Koreans claim it as a victory. They see it as successfully fighting against u. S. Imperial lifts. In 1950 a communist north korean invaded south korea which was backed by the United States. The brutal threeyearlong battle that followed was part of this theatrical story of north koreas history in the friday night games. Several,000 took part inform the acrobats and performance. In korea there were enormous casualties and destruction and we didnt suffer anything like that, and so we went on to other things and the koreans themselves had to rebuild and repull themselves out from this tremendous tremendous destruction. As we were chitchatting earlier, margaret there have been celebrations in the years, for years. You were in seoul during the time of rising tension. Whats it like right now . Its interesting. You talk about the forgotten war. In north korea it was stopped. As you often see with author tear tan regimes. If you go to the south its a huge financial hub. You couldnt get more of an opposite reaction to that and progress there. And people are sort of immune to this idea of a constant threat. You go up to the demilitarized zone, talk to people within military range and they say its an attitude. Its been this way for 60 years, were under constant threat, life goes on there. Is a treaty ever closer now than it was any time in the past 60 years. I dont think so. Weve been stuck for 60 years and it looks like were going to be stuck for a while. We have a democrat and a communist. Im just curious, margaret. Youve spoken to the president. What do you think some of the prospects are . Well the south korean president is very much a hardliner here when it comes to the north while people say, yes, wed like to ryu night, you couldnt get two countries on two different trajectories if you tried right now, and the south korean president is sticking to the idea that south korea and the United States are on the same page. Were not talking to you until you become denuclearized. Whats new is the government has said theyre on the same page. Thats sort of a new step. Whether they pull him in thats another matter. Is it a new regime . Has the country changed significantly yet . Its too soon for fundamental change but there are surface changes that look interesting. It looks possible that theyre going to try to commit more resources to the population. Well have to see. It looks possible that theyre going to try to reach better relations with south korea. I used to ride my bike when i was in college. Fabulous place. Next place, the appalachian trail. This has got over 850 miles of paved paths and gravel paths. Its at the tennessee, North Carolina border. Its for skill levels of all types. There are flat trails for easy ones and others. Its one of the most breathtaking places in the whole u. S. My favorite is in the midwest because i went to school in evanston so i know the chicago lakefront and its stunning. This is perhaps my favorite urban trail in the United States. It runs from chicagos south side about 18 miles to the north end of the city. It goes along the top attractions. Architecture buffs, youre going to see the best skyscrapers right from the trail. There was a lot of talk in the newsroom whether through was considered a hike. The San Antonio River walk. We wanted to mix it up. This is for mar gra ritas as if you want to stop for beverages. The alamo is a half mile off the trail. Its a nice way to see for the south central. And margarita makes it all worth the while. Lets head to the southwest and valley of the fire state park. This is a hot one. This is unique. If youre going in the sum eric be aware of the heat. This is spread sandstone. If it catches the sun at a certain time of the day, it almost looks like its on fire. It has beautiful red stone. There have been scifi movies that have come to this site for a very good reason. Its really gorgeous. Finally mt. Ranier national park. Coming up this half hour after another week of searing testimony in the trial of mob boss Whitey Bulger the prosecution rests its case. The latest phenomenon. Why the bird coop flew to new mexico. And the conjuring, the scariest movie of the summer. Is it based on a true story . Meet the woman who says it is, seven people are dead this morning, including the gunman following a shootout and hostage standoff at an apartment complex in hialeah. Reporter more than 13 hours after the first shots were fired, crime scene investigators and the medical examiner remain on the scene in this south florida neighborhood. They have several crime scenes to process and seven bodies to remove including the gunman. These s. W. A. T. Team moved into the Apartment Building in dramatic fashion killing the shooter after his eighthour reign. Police say he killed six people and took two hostages. Those two people made it out of this ordeal alive. Back on the scene, dozens of neighbors are still waiting to get into their homes. Meanwhile police are starting to unravel what could have led to what theyre calling possibly the deadliest mass shooting in the history of hialeah. Were also following break i news from egypt. There were deadly clashes this morning between Egyptian Security forces and supporters of ousted former president Mohamed Morsi. Clarissa ward has witnessed the latest and shes in cairo with the latest. Reporter both sides giving a different version of what happened overnight in cairo. The ministry saying 20 people were killed when a group of morsi supporters clashed with the military as they were trying to block off a bridge. This does not jell with what we just saw with our own eyes. We visited a makeshift morgue at the mosque compound where morsi supporters have been camped out since he was ousted earlier this month. We saw at least 39 dead bodies we spoke with the doctor in charge of this makeshift field clinic. He said that he simply did not have the proper instruments or equipment to treat the people, didnt have enough blood to give transfusions, so they had to stop letting in patients at a certain point in time. We did see 39 dead. Another man who claimed to be an eyewitness told us that the military, police, and what he called civilian thugs were clashing when they marches on the bridge as the interior ministry tried to stop morsi supporters. Clearly he said she said, two different stories. But certainly with our eyes we saw 39 dead bodies. For cbs this Morning Saturday, Clarissa Ward, cairo. Now to the latest on nsa leaker Edward Snowden still believed to be holed up at monthsscow moscows airport. Attorney general eric holder told him he would not get the Death Penalty. Its a strong response to Edward Snowden when he petitioned petitioned the russian government, he claimed if returned to the u. S. He would be tortured or put to death but the attorney general wanted to counter those claims in a letter to his russian counterpart. Holder said the claims are without merit. The letter was originally cement earlier this week and made public on friday. It goes on to say if snowden is returned to the u. S. He would be brought before a civilian court. Now, snowden has been in legal and diplomatic limbo for over a month at the moscow transit airport. He made a brief appearance two weeks ago and hes now waiting for russia to rule on his asylum request. Theres no clear indication of when that rule willing come and so far russian officials have not budged on their insistence that they d not extradite people. Meanwhile hes calling snowdens letter, quote, laughable. Jeff pegues in washington. Thank you. A military judge is now delivering the fate of bradley manning. Prosecutors portrayed manning as a gloryseeking traitor. His lawyers described him as a naive whistle blower. Manning faces a potential life sentence. The prosecution has rested its case in the prosecution of the mob boss Whitey Bulger. The defense will open its case on monday. Jim armstrong has the story. Reporter the government ended its case on two powerful witnesses, one, what was known as massive Money Laundering and the other an irs agent who arrested him. He coowned a bank account with his brother that was used to collect on big south boston debt long after whitey went on the run. After that jurors got to see everything pulled out of bulgers apartment turned hideout in santa monica california. More than 822,000 in cash hidden in walls alongside 30 pistols, rifles and other weapons. The witness testified he screamed and swore when arrested but eventually calmed down and told katherine to say, yes and, theyre going get it. He used his real name joking quote, this is the first time ive signed this name in a long time. When agent gary hola asked if he would have ever used this arsenal to engage in a shootout with police, he said no because a stray bullet might hit someone. It was a powerful day of testimony and images but some are not confident of a conviction. I dont know how deep it is. Reporter its expected to be brief. How does that affect an outcome . Whitey bulger has a reputation defense. It may not be a Legal Defense but its about the fact that he wants to say i was not a rat, i was not an informant, and i did not kill two particular women. So how does he make the jury believe that when you hear all the evidence of violence. They crossexamined stevey flemmi his partner in crime and they make him say what is the truth which is tall rewards, benefits inducements he got to testify, and yet hes still a liar, so its an effective cross. Ultimaletly where does it get him . Well find out very soon. Thats trouble with this case. If you look at the fbi, they dont look particularly thats the understatement of this year. You have an fbi group, particularly two agents but it really goes up to about four or five that we heard that was so corrupt that they enabled, they facilitated Whitey Bulgers reign of tar rohr as well as stevey flemmi by absolutely condoneingeing their crime so what the defense is trying to say, a pox on both of your houses. They want to expose a corruption of the fbi. What a pity this case is on television. Theres no reason for a camera not to be in this courtroom except by the federal rules because we should see how corrupt the fbi was at that point in time. It absolutely staggers the mind. They gave allegedly, bulger and flemmi, who to kill and why to kill them. The details of this are so unbelievable. Weve seen so many fireworks. Do you think now when the defense presents its case on monday, it will be an explosion. Will there be more drama in the courtroom . I think there will be more drama. Ive had the privilege of sitting in that courtroom. Ill go back on monday. The reason youre going to hear fireworks is you cant help it that when youve got people who are talking about Whitey Bulger as a rat, its everything that makes bulger mad. In addition the defense wants to put on evidence to show that stevey flemy was, indeed a child molester for years of one of the women who was killed. He said i didnt kill her. Stevey killed her. Stevey the rifleman killed her. Will he take the stand . Its everybodys guess and theres a lot of money, i suspect, floating in boston. I think he has to take the stand. I could be wrong. I said do we really think that people at home think this is what we look like every day and were sitting here perpetrating a fraud. But do a selfassessment of who you are, what you need, what you want, and tell yourself the truth about that so that you can begin to do things in your life that support you in having what you want. Next you say to learn to forgive. An author said to me once think forgiveness is the most underrated feeling in human nature. Right. And its hard to do because we live in a world where youre supposed to be punished for your mistakes. Youre supposed to be punished for your mistakes. Everybody doesnt get that but we promote it. Forgiveness of ourselves, our parents, of people. Its essential to being a good person because if youre holding unforgiveness and anger and resentment and bitterness in your heart, it ooh going to show up. I think gratitude on your list is also something. At the end of the day, you say just reflect on all of the things you have to be thankful for. You know, people are screaming, oh my god, oh my god, ive got cellulite. I say, hello, youve got legs. Weve got legs. We look at what we dont have and look at what reeses wrong what what we do have instead of being grateful for everything we have. Gratitude opens the heart and when the hearts are open we attract more stuff. Part of it is exercise regularly. Yeah. And i hate exercise. I will do my 5 for 5. That means five repetitions of five exercises for five minutes. Five situps, fie jumping jacks, five wall pushes five deep knee bends. Youve got to do something because it keeps the energy through your body so you dont get stagnant. You mention energy. You have a spiritual practice. What does that mean for all of us . That means each and every day i make contact with my source with my deep breathing. I use it as a way to still my mind, open my heart. It means that i journal out my thoughts and my feelings it means that i practice forgiveness every single day. It means that i reflect on myself, how i can be better what i need do, stop doing, a daily spiritual practice will keep you grounded and centered. Very impressive that he would know this rare bird from south america. People say its an incredible thing to be taping a bird and have elvis walk through the frame. How do you think he got here . Birds are pioneers, and like people some have more pioneer spirit than others. Now, theres also the possibility that it was human assisted in some way, and our check List Committee will kind of be evaluating that evidence but for right now, very exciting. You say exciting. To give people an understanding, you told us people were booking tickets. There was a huge migration just to see this bird. When you went back the second time how would you describe the energy of the bird watchers who traveled so far to catch a glimpse . When i got there when liz got there on friday the energy was very low because people had been baking in the hot new mexico sun all day and the bird hadnt put in an appearance and about 7 20 friday afternoon, boom, there he was. He just makes an entrance. It was like everybody got a shot of adrenaline. Talk about people coming back to life. You talk about trying to investigate how it got here. How do you go about doing that . Well, you look at things like abnormal feather wear. Could it have been in a cage or have a band on its leg. Its actually hard to tell. Who does that work . We have a check List Committee whenever a bird turns up. They look at it to make sure the bird was correctly identified. In this case there was no issue. This is one of those movies supposedly based on a true story, but is it really . In the 1970s Andrea Perron living in the rhode island house. She wrote a book about it, house of darkness, house of light. Good morning. You say the movie is essentially true. It is essentially true. There are elements of fix in it however, in broad sweeping strokes it captures the true elements of what we endured for ten years in the farmhouse. What were you thinking . Were you thinking this is it . It was fun. I enjoyed hanging out with him. It was fun. It was a diner. I didnt think id be a chef. It was a diner. I thought id be a cook. When did this idea come . I was always competing. I got to work with great chefs. I thought thats incredible. I should do that maybe. You opened two restaurants last year. Yeah. Is it any slower or full speed . Were still at full speed. Were opening a tiki bar called three dots and a dash. Thats a big undertaking and a steakhouse coming. Chicago has become a hot restaurant town. Whats happened there . So much opportunity happening. So many great restaurants, a lot ott great chefs. Great spaces and great challenges for young entrepreneurs and restauranteurs to do things. When i look around the table i think a lot of this is comfort foot. Is this your specialty . What makes it so special . What makes it stand out . I think accompanying things. For your me this is how i like to eat. Comfort is one of the biggest things. I want to enjoy it sit back and relax and spend times with friends and family. You wrote a book with your twin brother. Yes. It talks about seasoning with a chef. What makes it glamorous . Its not all too glamorous. No, not too much of it. This is but most of the time its late nights early mornings cooking. It was about keeping your head down, being humble and its a long road. Speaking of a long road now is probably a sip of a drink. You are a bourbon man. Without a doubt. What are we drinking . This is a gold rush. Our barkeep turned me onto this. I saw a picture of your bar at bub city. It was pretty impressive. Yeah without a doubt. The choice was overwhelming. Drink a few a day, thats all. Tell us a little bit about your background and how it influences how you cook today. A lot of my background is formal training. I worked with amazing chefs in new york and got to work with one of the best french chefs. He taught me about discipline and gave me Great Foundation for cooking. Now i can use that as building blocks. You also worked at French Laundry which is a huge thing people have heard about. A lot of people have. Fantastic. Just an incredible job there. How did you get into those restaurants . What sort of opened the door for you . You know, its just working one thing to the next, trying to work my way up the kitchens. First it was knocking on the back door trying to get into the kitchen and try to prove myself trying to be better than anyone else. How does that help you . It seems like you started at the bottom of the tier and each tier as you progressed you sort of learned different skill sets. For sure. I worked in different places different dynamic chefs. Learned a lot of different skill sets. Starting from the bottom teaches me to respect everybody elses position. If you could have this meal with anyone who would you have it with . My mother and my father. You know the tradition on the dish. We like to get the famous chefs that come in to sign this dish. This pork shoulder is absolutely delicious.
