Welcome to cbs this morning. Were getting an upclose look at the battle against isis this morning in one of the worlds most dangerous places. Holly williams and her crew came under fire in syria as they approached the front line. Theyre okay. Well check in with holly in just a moment. But first, president obamas admission about underestimating isis in last nights 60 minutes, correspondent steve croft asked him about the terror groups rise to power in syria and iraq. I understand all the caveats about these regional groups but this is this is an army of 40,000 people according to some of the military estimates i heard the other day, very well trained, very motivated. Well part of the how did this get how did they end up where they are in control of so much territory . Was that a complete surprise to you . Well i think our head of the Intelligence Community jim clapper, has acknowledged i think that they underestimated what had been taking place in syria. He didnt say just say that we underestimated isil. He said we overestimated the ability and the will of our allies, the iraqi army to fight. Thats true. Thats absolutely true. Is there a moderate Syrian Opposition . There is, but right now, it doesnt control much territory. It has been squeezed between isil on the one hand and the assad regime on the other. These are the people that you said, the farmers, the doctors, the pharmacists, who stood, no chance of overthrowing the government well, keep in mind two years ago, this was absolutely true. This is in response to the methodology thats evolved, that somehow if we had given those folks some guns 2 1 2 years ago, that syria would be fine. And the point that i made then which is absolutely true is that for us to just start arming inexperienced fighters who we hadnt vetted so we didnt know and couldnt sort out very well whos potentially isil or al nusra and who is somebody were going to work with. For us to just go blind on that would have been counterproductive and would not have helped the situation. But what also would have committed us to a month more significant role inside of syria. And the president also said he understands that fighting isis could help another u. S. Opponent syrian president bashar assad. But president obama said isis is the bigger threat right now. The coalition, led by the United States, reportedly launched new air strikes inside northern and Eastern Syria this morning. A cbs news team managed to get into syria over the weekend. Holly williams spoke to isis opponents in the small border village of mahmoodin. This morning, hollys in erbil, the capital of iraqs kurdish region. We crossed two days ago to meet with a rag tag Army Fighting off isis militants. Theres something very surprising and very unusual here in the middle east about many of its soldiers. So those hills are syria . In a journey to the syrian front like, our convey came under fire. We took cover in a village of mud brick huts. Where the shooting continued. Isis had been attacking the village for nearly a month. The militants are just a mile away and most of the residents have fled. But this commander is still here holding out against the islamic extremists. And he led us to safety. Commander hussein has just 40 soldiers to combat isis. 10 of them are women. Some of them teenagers. Its not enough, the commander told us but its all i have. Are your female soldiers are they good fighters . Theres no difference between the men and the women, he said. Some of the women are better fighters than i am. At 19 years old, akina akin is already battle hardened. I isis have kidnapped women. Forcing women to marry their commanders. Are you frightened about what might happen if youre captured . Im not afraid, she told us. Ill blow myself up before i let them catch me. Theyre desperately unequipped. Guns either captured from isis or bought on the black market. Commander hussein told us he hopes the u. S. Will come to the rescue. If isis defeats us he said their next target will be europe and america. The fighters in the village told us the u. S. Led air strikes against isis in syria have so far very little impact on the ground. Like many people in this part of the world, they would like to see more of them. Charlie. Holly, thanks. Thats ahead on cbs this morning. American troops are going to stay in afghanistan into next year, a Senior Adviser to president obama said. The new Afghan Government will sign an agreement tomorrow. It keeps about 10,000 americans there after the International Combat mission in afghanistan ends on december 31st. Afghanistans new president was sworn in this morning after an election deadlock that lasted for months. Air travelers still face delays this morning going in and out of chicago. And air Traffic Control center outside of the city is out of commission because of an act of sabotage. The problem is grounding passengers all over the country. This could go on for weeks. At the international airport, where more than 400 flights this morning alone are canceled. Reporter good morning to our viewers in the west. Our flight getting here to chicago was delayed last late night, but we were fortunate compared to some passengers whos flights were canceled. People are lining up to get out of town. Four days after a fire allegedly set by contract worker brian howard destroyed the Communication Center at this critical air Traffic Control facility outside chicago, commercial aviation is still trying to regain its footing. In a statement sunday the national air Traffic Controllers association called the last several days one of the most challenging situation they faced since 9 11. At chicagos ohare airport, 550 flights were canceled sunday. 700 flights nationwide. The faa says the arrivals and departures were at only 60 of a typical day out of ohare. 75 at midway. In order to keep flights moving air Traffic Control centers in cleveland, indianapolis kansas city and minneapolis have taken over the chicago centers responsibility s responsibilities. Its the faas approach to keeping the system working. Is this the best backup plan they can come up with . I think the suggestion you have a duplicate system everywhere, the costs would be astronomical. Reporter Additional Air Traffic Controllers have been brought in to monitor and direct arrivals and departures out of chicago and neighboring airports. The cost is adding up for the airlines. Even though some of the major carriers say the beginning of the workweek should bring fewer delays and cancellations. Still, the incident is raising questions for the faa. I think the question of allowing one man being able to do this is really a thing that has to be investigated very closely. We are seeing more delays and cancellations this morning. The faa says the new equipment will be brought in over the next few days and its teams will be installing it around the clock. Theyve said a completion date for october 18th, thats two weeks away. The suspect is in custody. Hes facing a felony charge. Hes recovering from a selfinflicted knife wound. Prodemocracy demonstrators are blocking the main road this morning in hong kong. They want china to back off its plan to hand pick candidates for an upcoming election. Demonstrators clashed with police. China took control of hong kong from the british in 1987. Now, on the scene. The unnamed patient went from here to the nih center in bethesda. Its not clear if the doctor actually contracted ebola. To another virus. This one sending hundreds of American Kids to the hospital. The enterovirus is taking a dangerous new turn. The cdc is investigating whether muscle weakness or paralysis in nine colorado kids is connected to the virus. 40 states confirm cases of the illness that swellled when the school year started. Doctor, good morning. Good morning, charlie. So tell me how you see this connection paralysis is a very scary consequence. Certainly is. This is a virus called enterovirus d68. Its from a family enteroviruses. Polio is an enterovirus. In fact there was an outbreak early this year in the state of california where several kids got paralysis and they had this particular virus. We cant prove the virus causes this neuro logic syndrome but there clearly is an association. These kids present theyve got sim tops of a virus. They have virus in the blood of some of them. And they also have character changes on mri. Its certainly scary. This virus now is spreading throughout the country in very large numbers of kids on the orders of magnitude more than have been reported to the cdc, this virus can have serious symptoms. David these nine children have fever and respiratory illness about two weeks before developing varying degrees of this limb weakness. What should parents do . Well, this is different than classic viruses. I talked to my brother yesterday who heads the medical intensive care unit of boston children. A normal virus takes selfdayveral days and you get sicker or sicker. Well this virus is 0 to 60 in less than 24 hours and classly most of the kids dont have fever. They just present with difficulty breathing. Be aware, if your child is sick at all keep them home. Dont let them go there. We have to stop the spread of this virus. If they at all have difficulty breathing or they start to be weak, you need to talk to your pediatrician about what this could be. So ebola virus in africa and now this virus. Whats going on . We, thell the world is flat. Right now, anybody can get on a plane and end up anywhere in the country and spread these viruses. We have to be aware of it. We dont know exactly why there was a dramatic spread this year. But something is happening now. We have multiple viruses. And together with Global Climate change, things are changing in the virus world and we have to pay attention. A Texas College Softball Team is coping with a devastating loss this morning. Four student athletes died friday when a tractor trailer slammed into the teams bus. Now investigators say the crash may have been criminal. Four adults and three kids are safe this morning after being rescued off the gulf coast. Vicente arenas shows us the quick action that prevented a tragedy there. A boat flipped over. Three children are in the water. Reporter the call for help came around 10 15 saturday morning. Do we know how far out they are . Were going to find out. Reporter the wife of one of the men on board alerted the coast guard. They were capsized. The husband was able to make a phone call before they got into the water and he said send the coast guard. Reporter the group was fishing about 5 miles south of Sanibel Island just after floridas gulf coast. Their engine stalled in choppy seas and then their boat capsized. A cell phone signal helped rescue workers find their exact location. Were gelling a cell phone ping 14 latitudes by 8553 long attitude. Reporter two of the children were 5 years old, the third just 4. You can see the two of them huddling with the adults on the overtulled hull. The other child clinging to floating debris with two other adults. Apparently one child just got stung by a jellyfish. Reporter a Fire Department rescue arrives. Rescuers tossed life preservers to the Group Floating in the water and then pulled them to safety. We do have three people on board at this time getting last four. Reporter next, a life preserver is thrown thwart the people still on the boat. One of the adults grabs it and swims back to help the others. It took just ten minutes for rescuers to pluck everyone out of the water. Weve got everyone. 3171. Coast guard onscene with the parents. The boerts who were not identified spent about an hour in open water some 30 feet deep. They were all wearing lifejackets and no injuries were reported. For cbs this morning, vicente arenas, miami. The thing that comes to my mind is why is he proposing a budget to devastate the pentagon . Why is he proposing to shrink the army to a level we havent seen since preworld war ii and the navy to a level weve never seen before. The facts dont jive with what hes saying. I agree with what he said. I the we immediate the military that we should be cape nl of doing. The president also saying they undermate not he. But they underestimated the iraqi soldiers and isis. Isis as well. The development of isis in syria. I agree with that. I think thats right. I think there are a couple of colossal mistakes that led to this emergence of isis. Not having the agreement in iraq helped contribute to the disent disintegration of the iraqi army. I think we should have armed them early in the conflict. Why do you think he did . This is the heart of the argument he has to make. When they were saying we should have done it and there would have been the opportunity to stop isis. And those of us getting the same intelligence briefing agreed with clinton and didnt agree with president obama. I think he wanted to get out of the middle east and washington and they continued to deny that and saying they were not prepared and it wouldnt have made a difference. I think a lot of people in the Administration Believe we could have made a difference. The military did want us to have an agreement in iraq. There were ways of getting it. We had one now without having the Iraqi Legislature approve it. We could have gotten the agreement in my opinion based upon the facts at the time. We didnt do it i think because the president wanted a precipitous withdrawal from the region and that created a vacuum which in part gave us the situation we were in now. I think hes doing the right thing now. So those of us in the opposition, i want to be complimentary when i think hes making the right decisions. I think he is making the right decisions now. E amgs worry about the future of our military given the budget that hes proposing for it. I think we need to readjust that as well. Youre calling for greater engagement in iraq and syria. I think hes moved in the right direction. Im critical of past mistakes. I think hes recognized those. I think hes fixing those mistakes. But we should do whatever it takes to defeat isis. We shouldnt be projecting to our enemies what we will not do. I dont know the the answer to your question norah, as to whether or not we need boots on the ground. I do know we need to do whatever it takes to defeat this threat to our country, and we shouldnt be taking options off the table. And when we look at this situation, were going touk to be talking about your book when you look at this situation, do you think, i wish this was a job that we were doing . That the the Republican Party were doing . That we were in charge. There are many moments that i look at my feet and shake my head saying i cant believe we lost. I wish we would have won. We would have done things differently. There are many moments when i see that. You talk about that a lot in your book. In order for the Republican Party to save the country, some people dont think it needs saving by the way, but you said the gop has to change from within. What do you mean be they . We need to be a more inclusive party. Im trying to arkansas tick late if you dont like the direction that we are headed which i dont and many people agree with that its not enough to criticize. We need to propose alternatives. We need to say how we would do things differently. With e need a party inclusive, principled and aspirational and capable of winning ha majority of americans. We cant have the strategy with the margin of error of one state. And so what im trying to arkansas tick late is the alt to have a bigger conservative movement that can bring people in and be capable of Winning National elections and fixing this countrys big problems, which in my opinion are going undealt with. You called your party lazy and complacent. That youre only reaching out to people like yourself. Do you think theres agreement among others in your party . Hi think leaders need to lead. We have better ideas for fighting poverty. We need to work an that. I think we need to have a big party that brings people in thats more inclusive, and show people that we have Better Solutions to fix their problems in their lives. I would argue that we have a different philosophy. A different governing philosophy than the president s, and we need to show how we apply that philosophy philosophy, one that uses principles to get out of the rut people are in in this country. And i dont think the country is heading in the right direction. And who best can articulate those divisions . We will find out. What matters to me is we get the policies right. It matters to me that we offer an alternative. Does it include you. It may. I dont know. You havent made a decision yet . Correct. Will someone say the timing of your book is suspicious. That its a way of getting the people to know you. No coincidence i dont think that this is coming out now. Would you at least agree to that . That there is a strategy here. The strategy is i want to do what i can to help produce a conservative movement that is inclusive encapable of winning a majority of support. I want a 2016 where we can get the country on the right track and have elections where we give people a choice. So when we win the election we have the mandate to get the countrys problems solved. You reveal in the book that your father was an alcoholic. We knew he had died at an early age of a heart attack. You found your father when he died. Why didnt you reveal that before . I didnt want to do it in the middle of a president ial campaign. I didnt think it was appropriate to get into those issues at the time. And everybody goes through difficult knocks in life. The point im trying to make is you can have tragedies in your family. But you can bounce back. You can pick yourself up and make the most of your life. Wear it, mount it, love it. It began as a simple waterproof camera Ceo Nick Woodman developed years ago to capture himself surfing. The company has a huge market share. More than half are gopros. Thrill seekers around the world first adopted it in partnership with prothreats like kelly slater, snowboarder sean white brought it to the mainstream. But gopro is now growing up moving beyond Adventure Sports to the masses. The cameras are now used and marketed for everyday life.
