Shes tracking reports of a new effort of temporary peace. Holly, good morning. Reporter good morning. There were reports this morning from the israeli side that israel and the Palestinian Militants had agreed on a comprehensive ceasefire to begin tomorrow morning. But they have both denied that. It follows the death yesterday of four palestinian children in an israeli air strike. The four boys were playing on the beach in gaza city. Some of them tried to run for cover, but didnt make it to safety. The youngest of the dead was just 9 years old. Israel says its offensive in gaza is targeting terrorists, but these people lost their son. God have vengeance on israel cried this woman. These two boys were both killed in the attack. Israel said it had no intention of harming the children and is investigating what happened. But it also blames all civilian deaths on Palestinian Militants, because it says they launch their rockets from residential areas. More than 200 palestinians have been killed during this escalation, and officials here say most of them were civilians. One israeli also lost his life and rockets fired from gaza into southern israel have caused injuries and damage, but many of them have also been shot down by israels iron dome antimissile deense system. The brief humanitarian ceasefire today allowed palestinians to leave their homes in safety. After avoiding the streets during ten days of air strikes, they crowded into markets and banks. Khetam al fataiergy is a mother of seven. I dont know anything about politics, she told us but i wish the ceasefire would last longer. Its difficult to feed my children with this war going on. The Israeli Military says it foiled an attack by 13 Palestinian Militants who were trying to sneak into israel via tunnels from gaza. Israel says those militants were armed with rocketpropelled grenades and other weapons and that one of them was killed in an air strike on the mouth of the tunnel. Holly, thank you. So far russia has failed to take any of the steps that i mentioned. Major garrett is at the white house. Major, good morning. Reporter good morning, margaret. Republicans want to speed up deportations. Democrats want to put on the brakes, and the white house is caught in the middle. It was a very thoughtful substantive discussion. Reporter secretary of Homeland Security jay johnson met with the senate last night and laid out the administrations proposal to speed up deportation hearings for unaccompanied minors coming here from central america. Right now the wait is a year or more. Republicans want that cut down to seven days. Nothing is going to improve until the plane loads of children return to the country that they left there by costing their parents and families thousands of dollars. Then theyll stop coming to the United States. Reporter democrats argue seven days isnt enough time for Migrant Children to make a legal case that they qualify for asiel imor some other some case. Bob menendez made that case to the president on wednesday. There are a universe of children who were facing a gang who said to them either join us or die or a young girl who was raped and who feels thats going to happen to them again when they return that will have a credible case and we cant undermine their ability to make that case. Reporter the white house hasnt said what its target is a few weeks or a few months for this very critical deportation hearing. These children are allowed by law. But its really critical. Omar sooe omar zivillafranca joins us from spring, texas. Reporter good morning. Theres a little rain here in houston to match the somber mood. A vigil was held last night after the burials just blocks away from the home which was the scene of the shooting last wednesday. Mourners here remembered the victims, but they also prayed for cassidy stay the only survivor. God, i pray that you give her strength. Reporter hundreds gathered at a park in spring in the memory of katie and steven stay and their four young children. It was here the stay family took this photo. He was traded for five prisoners at guantanamo bay. Michelle miller is here with bergdahls lawyer with what bergdahls lawyer is saying. Michelle good morning. Good morning. Although he reportedly still has not spoken to his family bergdahl is now reaching out to the president. Sergeant bergdahl is deeply grateful to president obama for having saved his life. Reporter former military prosecutor eugene sigh del is now representing bowe bergdahl. He met with bergdahl last week in san antonio, texas. Although he couldnt discuss what they talked about, he did give his impression of the former p. O. W. I like him as a client. That doesnt always happen but when it does happen its nice. Reporter an initial u. S. Military investigation in 2009 determined that bergdahl deliberately walked away from his unit based on evidence available at the time. If the army decides that there should be disciplinary action given all the circumstances, its a matter of great discretion on the part of senior army commanders. Reporter since his release, a growing number of people have called for bergdahl to be punished for deserting his post including some members of bergdahls former platoon. He chose to take off his gear, put down his weapon and walk away during the middle of the night. Reporter questions also remain about the taliban propaganda videos in which he appeared. As events unfold im sure people will put those videos into perspective and understand them for what they are. Reporter fidell says people should not rush for judgment and urges the public to wait until they hear all sides of the story. During the cold war it was part appears russian president vanilla vad mer putin is applying some pressure of his own. He reached a provisional agreement to reopen a cold era war spy base while visiting cuba last week. The base is located in lourdes, 150 miles from florida. It was established by the soviet union after the cuban missile crisis brought both nations as close as they would come to the brink of war. Our resolution will come to a prompt dismantling and withdrawal withdrawal. The base was opened from 196 p to 2001 and was a very substantial facility at its peak with about 3,000 people. As chief of the human armed forces in the 1990s castro boast thad 75 of russian intelligence on america was gathered from the small island nation. In exchange for russias return to the base cuba will be rewarded with up to 32 billion of debt relief. News of russias plan to reopen the base comes at a time of tense russian American Relations and coincides with president obamas announcement for more sanctions against russia for refusing to curb separatist violence in ukraine. We have to seek concrete actions and not just words that russia in fact, is committed to trying to end this conflict along the Russia Ukraine border. Reporter at the time of its closing the cuban base was an expensive venture for a russian government looking to cut costs. Thats why reopening and reinvesting in the aging facility is largely being seen as symbolic. Its a way to demonstrate to the United States that from a russian perspective, if the United States continues on the course that its on in dealing with moscow, the relationship may return to what it was like at the time that that base was built. Now, russias return to the spy base in cuba may not draw an Immediate Response to the white house because the u. S. We first heard that phone call yesterday a couple trying to cancel their Comcast Service but a representative stood in the way, a new call sparking a new conversation about whether its time for viewers to cut the cord. More than 7. 5 million households cancelled their cable in 2013 and thats up from 2010. Nicholas thompson welcome back. That conversation was so irritating and relatable. I know many times we have been in that position. But the guy on the phone says its my job to have the conversation that you keep your service so the Cable Service encourages you to do whatever it takes. Yeah, the reason why it got spread all over the internet is because we are so used to it Cable Service at the Cable Company is terrible and awful and because of their monopolies they dont have to compete or win us over they have got us we have to buy their services so they dont treat us well. They cant be thrilled by the publicity . This is not a good week for them, but its not going to lead to more regulation that leads to a more competitive cable industry. Well, if you look at how much it costs and figure out alternative ways then they will shift and thats part of the reason that cable coverage has been going down. Right, so there are a lot of people cutting the cords and moving to alternatives and comcast provides both your internet, and your television so you can cut off the Cable Services but you will still deal with the Customer Service reps but if you keep the internet you can watch a lot of shows through hulu or get a digital antenna, and there are a lot of alternatives, so you can pay for the internet and pay for the ad on services. You were talking about the lack of services. Nobody is defending the customer here. Yes. We talk about them getting bigger and bigger and when does it stop . This is one of the worst regulatory failures in the country. If you look at Internet Speeds we are about 30th or 40th in the world and thats terrible for a company that created the internet. Were that slow . Yes, and the reason is because of policy failures and we have not encouraged the market or enforced policies and yesterday there was an amendment to make the competition worse, to lesson competition and limit the fccs ability to push composition in the cable market. As there are more mergers, it will become more and more monopolies monopolies. Switch back to the service and the phone calls. Do you believe the attention that has come to this will change policy by comcast . Yes this will probably change comcasts policies for a short while. They will tell all of the reps that you need to keep your customers and they are valuable and dont abuse them i am sure theres a memo and this tape will be played in every training class, so yes, i think Customer Service will get temporarily better for sure, but there are still the structural problems. You seem to negotiate your bill . Absolutely. This is one thing you can do. You can call your Cable Company and say i am thinking of leaving and want to pay less, and they have a whole bunch of options and can reduce your bill. Call them now and see what you can bargain them down to. This is a good week to do that. Jason seagulls new movie about a couple trying to spice it up in their marriage. Jason, before you came in the studio, i asked a crew how many of you have done a sex tape. Yeah. The answer went from do polaroids count. Two, which one. Charlie was which one. Fantastic. Your mom sent out an email. You didnt tell her. She sent it to flame, i would like to inform you that jason has done full frontal nudity, however its not gratuity and its essential to the plot. I learned from experience it was not a nice joke. I looked at my mother and there was a tear coming down her face at the premiere and i realize this was not fair. It was not a nice thing to do. Im her little boy. Excuse the language. It was like the most well worded email. Shes the best. Gratuitous. Necessary to the script. Is writing satisfying to you . You act, you produce . Is writing satisfying . I think that what i my favorite thing is of this whole job that ive been lucky enough to get do is this weird little ail kany of being in your shower walking down the street and three or fur years later seeing it in a Movie Theater with an audience. I was like magic. You were telling us earlier that jeb was your mentor. Yeah. We did a show called freaks and geeks. all of us were very young. For most of us it was our finlt thing. He took me aside. It was canceled halfway through the season. He took me aside and said listen jason, youre kind of a weird guy the only way youre going to make it in this business is if you write your own material. He sat me down and showed me how to write a script and sent me off. The other thing he told me is if youre going to write a comedy write a drama. Sits going to be funny by the fact youre funny. You can layer jokes under it. Joke after joke after joke. If you dont lay drama underneath, no ones going to Pay Attention for an hour and a half. Thats why a sitcom is only 20 minutes. I heard you have a Childrens Book coming out . Y, i do. How did you make a leap . What is this . This is what im most proud of. When was 22 i wrote nightmares and sold it and it never got anything. The script sat on the shelf and nobody put together that it was the same jason segel and so when it became available i bought i back and turned it into a kids novel. I got you. Continued success. We all met you from how i met your mother. Youre okay with that . The show had a beautiful run. We told the story from beginning to end. Thats the goal right . And now sex tape opens in theaters tomorrow. Yeah. Its the best. He says with no eight belles. Yeah thats right. And the new home of the San Francisco 49ers. Levi stadium opens today. This is a cbs news special report. Im Margaret Brennan in new york. There has been a plane crash, a malaysian jetliner went down today in ukraine, near the border with russia. Malaysian air flight 17 was en route from amsterdam to kuala lumpur with 295 people on board. Were just getting many of these details. Our bob orr has been watching the situation from washington. Lets go to him now. Bob, what do we know . Margaret, just a moment ago, Malaysia Airlines confirmed it lost contact with the plane, which we believe to be a boeing 777 200, a long range airplane exactly like the one that disappeared several months ago coming out of kuala lumpur. Our best information is that this is a flight that took off from amsterdam. We believe it to be Malaysian Airlines flight 17 with as you said 280 passengers a crew of 15. It was en route to Southeast Asia when it got over Ukrainian Air space. Thats when radar lost track of the airplane. On top of that we see now reports from the ground some pictures of a column of smoke rising near the russian border in eastern ukraine. The kind of picture that would be consistent with a plane crash. Now, Interfax News Agency has said the plane is down. In fact has gone as far as to say there is some indication the plane may have been shot down. I want to emphasize that right now u. S. Authorities are just monitoring this information and have no independent confirmation either of a crash or the reason for that crash. But we believe as the facts are starting to come in here that it is looking pretty bad, margaret. Yes, Malaysian Airlines saying they have lost contact as you say there. Do we know what altitude this plane would have been at when it was flying over this Ukrainian Air space . This would have been midway in the flight, or part way along the flight route from amsterdam to kuala lumpur. The airplane the 777, here is a picture of a 777, would have been at about 33,000 feet. Thats the safest phase of flight. Thats called cruise altitude. At that point the pilots are going along, monitoring systems. It is not nearly as risky usually as a takeoff or landing. Suddenly when we look at radar tracking data we see at about 33,000 feet thats the last reported position that some of these tracking stations have. So whatever happened happened very very quickly and the plane came down very very quickly. There are these reports it was shot down. We cannot confirm that. But this kind of activity with an airplane coming down suddenly from altitude is certainly consistent with some kind of catastrophic event, sabotage or a bomb in this case perhaps a shootdown. It is not consistent with an accident scenario. We are seeing some conflicting reports on the wires about the altitude and about whether as you say flying over war zone whether this could have been sort of caught in some cross fire here. But as those details come in i mean we are looking at an area, ukraine, that is in conflict where there is a lot happening on the ground. What do we know about the information gathering at this point . I mean who is sort of providing the best source of information here the airline really not saying much at this time. Well the reports originated with Interfax News Agency and on top of that, ukrainian officials have come out to verify that a plane is down. An adviser to the ukrainian minister said he confirms 295 fatalities. Again, this information is moving faster than u. S. Authorities are able to confirm it. One thing, back to this idea of the plane being attacked as it were if it is a shootdown, this would have happened at altitude 33,000 feet. That takes things like shoulder fired missiles out of the equation. So for it to have been shot down at that altitude we believe, anyway it had to have involved some kind of large surface to air missile or air to air missile. Ukraine is an area of unrest. We have separatists there fighting the government. We know Russian Forces have been amassing on the border. There is no indication we want to emphasize this we do not know exactly what happened here. And we do not know who was responsible for this if in fact it was a shootdown, margaret. Bob, as you said at the getgo here, Malaysian Airlines many people know from their previous News Coverage and experience there, that missing airliner the boeing 777, what do we know about the aircraft itself . The boeing 777 is one of the best airplanes ever built with a Safety Record that is the envy of the industry. It is a great airplane. It is a work horse for long flights. In this case from europe to Southeast Asia theyre used all around the world for those kinds of long flights. This is a highly reliable airplane. We know that malaysia air also had a pretty good track record. The missing airplane notwithstanding, thats a case that is still unsolved we dont know what happened there. But there is no indication that even was an accident that may have been a deliberate act. But this is certainly something that happened very suddenly in an altitude. I would not, in my opinion, suspect the airplane. It is possible you could have some kind of catastrophic breakup, but it sure doesnt look like that with the data points we amassed so far. As we amass those data points this is over a complex zone being closely monitored by a number of governments around the world, is this a situation where we might actually get more information forthcoming, more immediately, and perhaps more definitively than we did with that still missing malaysian jetliner . Yeah i think so. I think were going to know maybe in short order what happened here. I mean if this is an act of war, or are if it is an accident some kind of accidental shootdown, and if it involves thats a lot of ifs, some kind of large surface to air missile battery, we should be, intelligence should be able to detect some kind of large flash. As we speak, the u. S. Government is involved in a Conference Call the security agencies the security agencies and intelligence agencies are looking at all of these facts and trying to go to their best available sources to find out what happened. One of the things that they can do is with satellites they can go back and review data and see if they see large flashes that would be consistent with some kind of shootdown. But if someone quickly gets to this wreckage presuming this is wreckage we have seen that has been smoking in the pictures provided to us, they should be able to find evidence pretty readily on the airplane and the black boxes there would tell us some very interesting clues too. When a plane suddenly breaks up when it comes down from altitude these black boxes have kind of an unmistakable signal. Usually have just an immediate cessation of all data because something obliterates an airplane or takes it apart, like pan am 103, the bombing in midair that usually cuts the data lines and the electronics. So when they retrieve these boxes, theyll be able to look at this and say how quickly did we lose data. And if it is instantaneous, theyll use that in the forensic evidence to say what caused that. Lets bring some of our viewers up to speed here on what we do know at this point, which is that malaysia air has said they have lost track of one of their airliners, a flight mh17, somewhere over Ukrainian Air space. This information being put up on the web by the airline itself via twitter. You see the exact information, the quote there, the last known position was over ukraine air space. They have not confirmed the details of all of those passengers on board, but what we do know is that there were 295 aboard that boeing aircraft. It has reportedly crashed with the malaysian jetliners themselves the airline, i should say, has not confirmed the fate of those 295 people. What youre looking at on your screen right now are some amateur videos of that that have surfaced of as you can see, smoke, some people there locally shooting this video of what appears to be and what is purportedly the downed aircraft. This is flight mh17, Malaysia Airlines. It was a boeing aircraft with 295 people on board. It had taken off from amsterdam, the flight originating out of europe was supposed to be bound for kuala lumpur. But it is reportedly either as you can see in the pictures been downed on the ground in ukraine, but the Malaysian Airline company itself only saying at this point that they have lost contact. They have not confirmed the fate of the passengers or the airplane itself. Bob, are we hearing anything bob orr, of course in washington has been updating us on what we know about trying to track this airline, what might have been the Safety Record of that flight itself because as so many of you have may well remember this same company lost an aircraft lost track of it altogether somewhere in asia just a few months ago, this appears to be an actual downing of an aircraft here. And were gather information. Bob, this boeing plane itself the 777, you said, was sort of the envy of the industry. When it comes to this Safety Record of this plane, of this type of this make and model, what do we know . Well, it is excellent. The Safety Record of this plane is excellent, margaret. There have been very very few crashes that i know of it goes back to the early 90s when it was introduced. It was boeings first big airplane out of the box after the 747. It has been a work horse, long haul aircraft for now, going on about 20 years. So it is an excellent aircraft. There is no reason in this case to suspect a problem with the airplane. We have to be a little careful, because we have just very very few facts, what we have are just anecdotal facts, but going back to what we talked about before youre talking now about a plane that was pretty high altitude. About five six miles in the air, making a long journey across europe and asia to Southeast Asia. When suddenly it comes down from altitude. Airplanes dont simply do that. There is only a couple of things that can happen. And that is a bomb or some kind of catastrophic event with the airplane structure, which that just isnt going to happen in this day and age in terms of the airplane just falling apart. Or you could have some kind of external factor maybe a shootdown as theyre suggesting in this case. I think we have to be careful not to paint with a real broad brush about Malaysian Air because this is now an airline, frankly, that may just be incredibly unlucky. Malaysian flight 370 seems to be a case most likely of a criminal act, the airplane being taken and flown deliberately off course. This appears to be some kind of accident or deliberate act, but not the actions of the pilot. So while it has been backtoback major events with the same kind of airplane from the same airline, i think we have to be very careful not to kind of draw any conclusions from that if you follow me. Bob, i want to stay here. Were looking at this video here of smoke plumes coming up from what is reportedly the wreckage. We cant verify this. But this is from the ground from some amateur photographers who filmed this video on the ground in ukraine. Thats how we have obtained it. But i want to update you on what were hearing from an adviser to the ukrainian interior minister who is claiming that this aircraft was shot down over Ukrainian Air space. And he in saying that is laying blame at the foot of some of these separatist groups pro russian separatist groups within ukraine. We cant confirm that but we know the Ukrainian Government has come forward, this adviser to the interior minister and said that. We also do know that those types of ground to air missiles are believed to be in the possession of some of these separatist groups some of these russianbacked paramilitary groups who are on the ground there. As you say, the airline itself cant yet confirm the fate of its own plane, nor the passengers who are on board or were on board, 295 of them. What we do know of the aircraft itself were seeing that the faa boeing itself are aware of all of these reports. About this Malaysian Airlines plane. But they themselves are gathering information but boeing itself would be aware of what had reportedly happened to the aircraft it makes, but as to what happened exactly over that ukraineian air space were waiting on information. As you say, bob, this could be an incorrectly unlucky airline itself, but it seems such a strange confluence of events to be happening over a war zone as it is. Would these types of surface to air missiles been able to take down an aircraft of this size of an Airline Flying at the altitude we believe it was when it came to the ground . Im not a weapons expert so i have to be careful with how far i take this but, yes. If a missile can reach the aircraft at 33,000 feet a shoulder fired missile will not get there, i believe there are ground systems clearly that can, if a missile can get to that aircraft it doesnt take much of a charge to bring the plane down. And heres why. I mean that aircraft is a fairly fragile instrument in the air. Once you puncture the system puncture the fuselage and take away the pressurization of the plane, the plane itself can start to come apart. On top of that youve got fuel tanks in the wings, that are fully loaded for a long, long flight. And these fuel tanks are highly flammable. If you get a situation where a missile makes a direct hit on a heat source like an engine of an airplane at altitude that plane is very likely going to come down. There are ways to save it but thats a really really bad place to be. If youre a pilot, you dont have a great chance there. You have a very vulnerable structure, you know it is fairly thin material it is no competition for a warhead or a missile. And with those fuel tanks sitting there as a ready source of fuel youve got a real big problem here. Now, the fire we have been watching on the ground here from this feed that has been beamed in that kind of column margaret ive seen enough airplane crashes in my time to know that kind of column of smoke is very consistent. So thats a fairly thats a fairly large smoke pattern which would be consistent with fuel burning. The one thing several things different about this incident and the missing mh370 flight. That one missing over water, was not controlled air space, we didnt have radar contact. We didnt have Ground Control contact with that flight once it made you know a left turn out over the bay of bengal and went towards the indian ocean. Thats why it was so mysterious. There was nobody tracking it aside from the satellite handshakes we have talked about. In this particular case because the plane had taken off over amsterdam, and was always flying over populated areas, for the most part i would think almost for the entire way, we would have Ground Controllers, we would have radar stations monitoring this as it would transit sovereign air space from one country to another, the pilots would routinely check in with the next country, identify themselves and there would be people watching this flight. You have to presume with that kind of scenario of facts that if the plane had a problem, or if the pilots had a problem they knew about, they would have had plenty of time to tell somebody. So we may find out later that they either did or did not receive messages from the airplane. But, again, this seems to have happened very very suddenly with some kind of violent event at 33,000 feet. You know we dont want to speculate too far out here. We know there are foreign officials, including an adviser to the foreign minister in the ukraine claiming that it was shot down but i want to emphasize, we have no independent verification from any u. S. Authority that any kind of missile was involved. Doesnt mean there isnt. It means right now we have to go a little slow here not to get too far out on that branch. Scott, i guess you joined us. Yes, bob. I joined the coverage here in new york. And to pick up where you left off, bob, it is important to remember that at least two military aircraft have been shot down by missiles in ukraine just this week. On monday a ukrainian cargo plane, a military cargo plane was shot down by a missile. And overnight the nians reported that one of their ground attack aircraft another military aircraft was shot down by a missile. They claimed a missile fired from the russian side of the border. No confirmation of that. What we do know is that over the last several days there have been a lot of missiles flying a lot of missiles flying and at least two military aircraft shot down on monday and yesterday. Now we have this report as you see, smoke rising in the distance quite a lot of it a report of a Malaysian Airlines boeing 777, this is a twin aisle jumbo jet carrying almost 300 people having crashed in ukraine, near the russian border right where russia and ukraine have been skirmishing now for many months a number of antiaircraft missiles fired in that region over the week and now we have this report of this malaysian civilian plane with 295 passengers on board having crashed near that border of the region. This aircraft was flying from amsterdam to kuala lumpur in malaysia. So one would presume that over ukraine, it would be flying at altitude. There is no reason very very rare that an aircraft would fall from its cruising altitude and crash. Extremely rare event. Most aircraft accidents occur on takeoff and landing, of course. So the ukrainians are claiming that a missile fired by ukrainian separatists hit the aircraft and caused it to crash 280 passengers were told 15 crew members, a boeing 777 en route from amsterdam to kuala lumpur. Bob, youre in washington as we watch these images now, smoke rising in the distance. You make a very important point. People need to understand here that this airplanes last known altitude radar as far as we can tell was 33,000 feet. Thats in what you described, scott, accurately as the cruise altitude part of the flight. It is the safest part of the flight. If pilots can take a breath thats when they do. Everything is fairly automated. It is a routine part of the flight very very safe. It is extremely rare for an aircraft to come down from altitude. And when one does come down it is usually the result of an external force like a bomb or a missile. So these reports of a shootdown while we cannot independently confirm them makes some sense in terms of the scenario that we see playing out here because it is almost inconceivable to come up with a mechanical scenario that would fit the facts with that airplane crashing from that safe phase of flight. So we know scott that the u. S. Government is picking up the bits and pieces of
