An historic storm causes chaos up and down the east coast. From the south to new england, heavy snow ice, making travel treacherous. More than 770,000 customers do not have electricity in 15 states. The storm barrelled into the carolinas. Drivers got caught in massive traffic jams. Isnt this a fourwheeldrive car . Its not doing anything. Thousands of taliban prisoners walk out of a prison. This is an enormous slap in the face to the United States. Two largest Cable Tv Companies in this country are merging. Comcast is buying time warner cable. The u. S. Has swept the podium in mens slope style skiing. And the russians won two gold and silver russian pairs back on top of the world. Kaitlyn farrington americas newest golden girl in the house. I cant believe i came out on top. Im really just speechless. Congress passed a bill to raise the federal debt limit, allows the government to borrow all of the money it needs to pay its bills. 16 people had to be rescued after they became stuck on a roller coaster at Busch Gardens in tampa. All that. Eight corvettes swallowed by a sinkhole. Cars plunged into the earth. I hope they have insurance. Two seconds hell get the shot off got it he hit it he hit the shot goodness gracious. Syracuse is still undefeated. And all that matters. Hollywood loses a legend. Sid caesar considered the pioneer of comedy. Its a wonderful feeling when the audience laughs. Oh, thats thats the payoff. On cbs this morning. The firstever olympic winner gold for slovenia. The slovenian woman who won is also a pop star in her country. So Justin Bieber is not the only pop star going downhill fast. [ laughter ] this mornings eyeopener is presented by toyota. Lets go places. Welcome to cbs this morning. Good morning norah. Good morning, charlie. My home state of South Carolina is getting hard hit. Yes. As you wake up to sun in the northwest, more than 100 million americans are dealing with a new winter blast. It is snowing all along the east coast. Ice in the south is blamed for at least a dozen deaths and widespread power outages. We have correspondents in the hardesthit areas from new jersey to georgia, and we begin with Wyatt Andrews in raleigh, North Carolina, which is at a standstill this morning. Wyatt, good morning to you. Reporter norah, charlie, good morning. Behind me are just some of the hundreds of cars that have been abandoned by drivers who were stuck in yesterdays midday rush hour nightmare. Officials tried to ask people to stay home, but many people came to work downtown. The problem in raleigh is that employers released thousands of workers right around noon, which was right at the height of the storm. The gridlock began when the heavy snowfall turned the roads into an icy glaze. Thousands of drivers hoping to beat the storm instead found themselves trapped for hours. Other has trouble just getting on the road. Put it in reverse. Reporter we saw several cars that needed a boost right right, right. Reporter but many drivers abandoned their vehicles altogether. I couldnt even imagine how many there are. Reporter on wednesday night, we rode along with Quintin Stanton of the North Carolina highway patrol. Your job tonight will be, what . It will be to check every stretch of highway, every abandoned vehicle we see, shine a flashlight making sure no one is in the vehicles. Reporter youre afraid there may be someone still in a vehicle . And there are. Thats why were here checking every vehicle as quick as we can. Reporter state troopers responded to more than 2,000 accidents. This car even burst into flames. But across the region there were also neighbors helping neighbors. Daniel smith found shelter at the Midway Baptist Church after his car got stuck on an icy hill. It was something out of like, a zombie movie or something, all of the abandoned cars on the side of the road. Reporter like many here, smith had heard all of the warnings, but the speed and the power of the storm caught him by surprise. We knew the forecast, we knew it would be bad. But we thought, you know, just once it starts to come down, well head home and be fine. Reporter and this is not over. A third wave of this ice storm is in the forecast for raleigh again today, but it wont have the intensity of wednesdays storm. Norah and charlie . Wyatt andrews, thank you. Conditions are almost as bad in South Carolina. Officials there are asking residents to stay off the road for another day, and Metro Atlanta is facing its second major weather crisis in just two weeks. Mark strassmann is in atlanta where Officials Say this time preparations are paying off. Mark, good morning. Reporter good morning, norah and charlie. It started snowing again here in atlanta and i want to show you something that should not be possible, but it is. Im walking in the middle of a street in midtown atlanta during what should be the beginning of rush hour. But its possible because everybody has been told the same message by schools, businesses, and emergency officials, and the message was stay home. Downtown atlanta could stay deserted for a thirdstraight day today as almost everyone here has hunkered down at home. Emergency officials were sounding the alarm again last night. This storm is predicted to have a good deal of ice still, and we feel like it will be treacherous to drive the rest of tonight and tomorrow. Reporter this is gema the Georgia Emergency Management Agency desperately trying to avoid the chaos that paralyzed the city two weeks ago. This time no ones taking any chances. 5,000 utility crews restored power in neighborhoods where lines toppled under the weight of ice and falling trees. Atlanta mayor kasim reed pressed for caution. People are starting to get cabin fever and theyre starting to make their way out and run errands and get out on the streets a bit. Im personally asking you not to do that. Reporter but a couple hundred thousand georgians who listened and rode out the storm at home will wake up in the dark and cold. Theres no heat. Its freezing. Were dressed from head to toe. Reporter Brittani White lost power in the middle of the night. We have no lights, we have no food. We have nothing. Reporter many georgians are growing restless. Sick of being home all day. So we decided to go outside and walk around, because i was going crazy. Reporter most of the streets in and around atlanta are sort of like this one they have not been plowed and probably wont be for sometime. Theres not enough equipment. Storm supplies like shovels also in short supply. And heres the issue. If you dig into the snow, there is ice underneath. Theres not enough ice melting equipment either. The ice is going to stay here until the weather warms, which should be sometime tomorrow. Temperatures in the 50s the kind of winter atlantans much prefer. Thanks mark from atlanta, North Carolina, we move north to washington, d. C. , the Nations Capital could see its biggest snow and ice storm in four years. Federal government offices are closed for the day. Chip reid is in washington on the national mall. Chip, good morning. Reporter well, good morning, charlie and norah, and good morning to our viewers in the west, where i suspect youre not getting weather like this. This is the worst snowstorm weve had in d. C. Since snowmageddon four years ago. This major commuter artery here 14th street almost empty. Over here, you have the Agriculture Department closed just like the rest of the federal government. The Smithsonian Castle and all of the museums that line the mall closed. And all the way down there, the u. S. Capitol, nothing happening there. They passed the debt limit, and they got out of town. At least the ones who could catch a plane, because National Airports is now closed. In washington, we got about 11 inches of snow. Out in western maryland and virginia, they got more like 16, and its still snowing in some areas. One thing of concern, though its raining lightly now, and the snow is a bit wetter. Its possible it could cling to trees and to power lines and bring them down. Of course, they are hoping that does not happen. Charlie and norah . Chip reid, thank you. And heavy snow is disrupting the commute all around philadelphia and new york. New jerseys governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency. Thats where we find Terrell Brown, in rutherford, west of new york city. Terrell, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. This wet, heavy snow starting to come down now and its picking up. And even as you have these plow trucks moving through, theyre having a tough time keeping up. These are accumulations this is just overnight into this morning. And theres been so much snow that has fallen with the backtoback snowstorms that these are some of the sights that you see along the roadways here in new jersey. This is basically a Snow Mountain. This is where the snow is ending up, about 100 to 150 yards long about 20 to 25 feet high, and there are literally chunks of ice in here. So this is going to be here for quite sometime. The department of transportation in new jersey is spending about 70 million on snow removal. That is a record. The previous high last year, that was about 62. 5 million. Theres also a shortage of salt and sand in this state. And this storm is moving through during the morning rush today, through the evening rush tonight, and also through the morning rush tomorrow morning. Much more heavy snow on the way. When it is all said and done we could be possibly talking about 10 inches of snow in the area and there is definitely going to be a concern for traffic and travelers the next few days. Charlie and norah, back to you. Terrell, thank you. Heres what it looks like in new york city where snow is accumulating. This storm is expected to last another 24 hours in the northeast. Meteorologist megan glaros is from our cbs station wbbm but the storm is affecting so many people nationwide we brought her here to studio 57. Good morning to you both. Good morning again. I think the storm will be remembered in two fashions its going to be the ice storm to the south and the snow from the northeast. And at this point, you know, that is where we go because we look at the storm as it continues to push off the northeast. Let me show you what its doing right now. You can see theres still freezing rain some sleet, some snow impacting parts of the deep south out here. But now the storm stretches to the north. Lets take a closer look at the radar and show you what we anticipate seeing here. New york being hit very hard right now. It goes all the way down to washington, and the future cast well show you where it goes. Right up the coastline. The major cities of washington of new york of boston will all be under the rain snow line. But there are watches and warnings that extend from alabama all the way up to maine at this point. And what we anticipate with this system, very heavy accumulations inland generally. So youll find 12 to 18inch swath if you head just a few hundred miles inland. But closer to the coast where we see more of a rain snow mix, were likely to see it not be quite as high accumulationwise, and also intense winds which could create a coastal flooding threat, too. Charlie, norah . Megan glaros thank you. The storm is causing huge travel problems across the United States. Nearly all of the major east coast airports are barely running. So far this morning, airlines already cancelled more than 5,000 flights. New york city is seeing the most disruptions, followed by airports in the d. C. Area. The faa command center in Northern Virginia keeps up with the changes as they happen. Officials say dont expect much improvement until probably this weekend. It could be a few days, depending upon exactly how long the airports are shut down or how quickly they can recover and clean up the tarmac and the runways. So it could be a two or threeday event. 7,000 u. S. Flights were cancelled or delayed yesterday. Were just getting the pictures of a freight derailment in snowy western pennsylvania. 15 cars jumped the track when the train hit a building outside pittsburgh. Sme people were forced to leave the building. The train was carrying crude oil. No injuries are reported, and there is no sign of a fire. Well take you to more hardhit areas across the country. Thats coming up. We turn now to afghanistan, the country released 65 prisoners this morning despite strong objections from the United States. The men were being held at a former american detention facility north of kabul. The pentagon says the detainees are actually taliban fighters and will return to the battlefield. Afghans president , hamid karzai ordered the release several weeks ago after his government took over the prison. And major news this morning for 12 million cable tv customers. If you do not want to know, please turn away. The United States team is celebrating a clean sweep. And the usa is now second in the medal count. Norway still leads with canada and the netherlands tied for third. I was just checking the results and alfonso van marsh is in sochi with the story. Alfonso, great news. Good morning. Reporter it is good news. Good morning charlie. Good morning norah. Records are being won and lost here in sochi, but the americans, team usa, theyre not letting the warm temperatures stand in their way. Team usa continued to Gain Momentum sweeping the mens slope style skiing event to win all three medals earlier today. The victory came just a day after snowboarder kaitlyn faring ton won gold in the womans halfpipe. She is just nonstop right now. Reporter while teammate kelly clark took home the bronze. The pipe was in the best condition that it has been all week. To have the gold medal under my belt, i cant even believe it still. Reporter a little more time lost for mancuso. For the rest of team usa, the news was not as uplifting. Out of the medal picture. Reporter in womens hockey a controversial call gave canada a 32 win over the american team. The game winner was decided after this goal was upheld for the canadians. And it goes in. Did the wlisle blow . Reporter in speedskating grutis became the oldest gold medallist in the 1,000 meter, delivering a devastating blow to american shani davis. There will be no threepeat. Reporter cutting short his dream of a third consecutive gold. History was also made on the slopes. In an olympic first, two women, geesen of switzerland and slovenia shared the gold medal in the womens alpine downhill. This is almost surreal. To share it with somebody else. Reporter russia reclaimed its dominance in pairs figure skating after a humiliating loss in vancouver four years ago. The host country took home gold and silver, bringing the russian crowd to its feet. Now, the temperatures here have climbed up close to 70 degrees. With all of the melting snow team usa might have more to deal with than just the competition. Charlie, norah . 70 degrees. Thats incredible. Alphonso thank you. Bad news is people are waking up without power and it could be a cold home they hunker down in. Thank you, mark strassmann. A sinkhole at the National Corvette museum in kentucky literally just swallowed up eight vintage sports cars last night. As vinita nair shoes us it was all captured on video. Good morning to you. Good morning. The sinkhole opened up yesterday morning at 5 30 when people were not inside. But where it opened not so lucky. Inside the museum it houses some of the most valuable corvettes. It happened during the Early Morning hours. The ground begins to buckle. Then completely breaks 31 seconds from start to finish. In total, eight vintage cars were ruined. The Fire Department estimates that the hole is 40 feet wide and about 30 feet deep. As for the cars lying nose first in the dirt the estimates of loss are higher especially the 1 millionth corvette that came off the assembly line. My hunch is the millionth car is worth at least a million particulars. Even if they manage to repair the cars theyll never be what they were. Many are irreplaceable. Six were owned by the museum but two of them a 1993 spooider and a 2009 blue devil were on loan from general motors. Sinkholes are common in this pa rt of kentucky becausely are long caves that run underground. But geologists dont know what caused this to open up. What are the odds that the crown jewels of the National Corvette museum are dropped through the store. Reporter Structural Engineers said the rest of the museum is on stable ground so visitors will be able to see the cars again but not the new gapes attraction. Corvette enthusiasts around the world have taken to social media to mourn some of these cars. The good news is the museum thinks some of them can be saved. Thanks, vinita. And i am in the middle of the street in midtown atlanta in what should be the beginning of rush hour. Watches and warnings extend from alabama all the way up to maine at this point. This is the worst snowstorm we have had in d. C. Since snowmageddon four years ago. This is a Snow Mountain. Comcast is buying time warner cable. A huge east coast storm is bringing things to a crawl, and no power for hundreds of thousands of customer and more than 100 million americans are under some kind of Winter Weather warning. Many drivers could not handle the icy roads yesterday. They had to walk home in this weather. And Wyatt Andrews is in charlie roses territory. Wyatt, good morning to you. Reporter this is what raleigh looks like this morning, and these are some of the hundreds of cars that drivers abandoned as they were stranded out of the gridlock. Drivers told us they knew all about the warnings and their employers planned to release them at noon. That put thousands on the roads at the height of the storm, and the roads were becoming hockey rinks. And another snowstorm in the forecast for raleigh. Thank you. Atlanta looked like that two weeks ago, but not this morning. People deserted downtown atlanta. 48 hours after officials urged everybody to please stay home and thats what they are doing in washington this morning, the federal government and Everything Else there is shut down because of the snow. Chip reid is in the middle of the mess but on the Beautiful National mall. Reporter good morning to the viewers in the west where i suspect you are not getting weather like this. This is the worst snowstorm in washington, d. C. Since snowmageddon four years ago. Theres a light freezing rain a rain and slight snow still falling, and out west in virginia they have more than 16 inches of snow in some areas. And here the Agriculture Department is closed just like the rest of the federal government, and all the other closed and down the u. S. Capitol building, nothing is happening there, they hightailed it out of town after voting to raise the debt limit, and thats for those that could catch a plane because the National Airport is also closed. Chip thanks. In the midatlantic its snowing in much of maryland. The governor declared a state of emergency, and he calls the storm a wet and nasty event, and north of new york city could see more snow. And Terrell Brown is west of the city in new jersey. Terrell, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. We have heavier snow coming down now. We have sleet along with it and not that the northeast wants or needs it at this point. In fact theres so much snow in new jersey that crews are having a hard time finding a place to put it. As you drive around, this is a sight that see, this is a Snow Mountain that developed, and the snow piled up 20 to 25 feet and its going to be here for quite sometime until it warms up and some could melt and after today we could talk about 10 more inches of snow on top of what we see here. Thank you. Its another horrible morning if you have to fly anywhere today. The airlines cancelled more than 5000 flights. The storm affects all the major east coast airports and conditions will not improve until tomorrow at the earliest. Our meteorologist megan galaros is here. This is a big storm system. We know what it has done in the south and it still continues to snow in parts of georgia this morning. And taking a closer look at the radar as we move up the coastline and into the northeast, you can see heavy snow across knox, new york city, and boston closer to the rain and snow line meaning they will see rain mix in earlier, but still could have 2 to 4 inches of accumulation there, and then winds as well because as this low pressure rides up the east coast, it deepens or strengthens, so what that does is pulls in more wind and coastal flooding could be a possibility and inland areas could see a potential for blizzardlike conditions, and no blizzard warnings at this point, but wind and snow and usually not a good combination. An iconic legend is being remembered from coasttocoast. The marquee at the famous laugh factory in los angeles is paying tribute, and he influenced countless comedians that followed. All i want to do is put a smile on the face of america. Sid caesar did more than put a smile on the face of america. He was the king of tv sketch comedy in the 1950s, and at its height 60 million americans would turn in to watch the shows, his comedy series. Its a wonderful feeling. Thats the payoff. Seizure was born in 1922 in yonkers, new york and his big break came in 57 when nbc launched the show of shows, and it was a mix of sketches and what caesar called being fluent in fake languages. I think what sid had was a remarkable eye and ear for the writers. Neal simon was one of the writers that got their start on the show and others included woody allen and mel brooks. You think it was a golden age room . Yes, it was a gathering of men who were stars of comedy and each writer had a different style. He won two emmy awards but the nonstop pressure took its pressure. I was getting more and more tired. And i started to drink and i started to take sleeping pills because i could not sleep. Caesar struggles with addiction for more than 20 years before quitting cold turkey in 1978. He continued to act and appearing in films like its a mad, mad, mad world, and grease. He always knew what his legacy would be. The legacy is comedy. I made people laugh. When you make people laugh, they are getting better. Thats a wonderful thing to feel. He was, as we said the king of sketch comedy. People that followed like saturday night live, all those owe something to him. And one said sid was a flame, and every writer was a moth that wanted to be around that flame. He didnt do putdowns and things like that sixtime nascar sprint come winner Jimmie Johnson, getting ready. There he is. He is telling us about his quest for back to back wins. Whats the challenge and whats it mean to win it . Its such a big sport. This racetrack was put here and the spectacle was right here. Its odd that the super bowl of the racing event is the first of the sport. Were geared up and ready to go. It was a short offseason for me and for most in the garage area but were ready to come out and put on a great show for the fans. Jimmy, people say this about you, that you have an extraordinary ability to adapt. Whats your strategy . I know youre trying to win but what goes into your strategy to make sure you cross first . I feel like my background in racing on the dirt as a young kid and then racing in buggies. It helped me adapt. Racing on different gives you that uncomfortable season. Our season is long and our races are long. I think our team does a great job of managing that. Jimmy, good toi wanted to ask you. Petty was asked if Danica Patrick could win a race and he said, quote, only if everyone stays home. What do you make of that . I hadnt heard of that. Thats a pretty strong zinger. Danica is a good competitor. At this stage shes still driving and learning. Only time will tell. Theyre different than what she started racing. She has a long road ahead of herself and is committed to our cars and good for the sport of nascar. You get yourself in shape. We dont think of them as being the same but you treat it that way. You and i had the same trainer but youve taken to running. Tell me what endurance means for a race car driver. Yeah. The Strength Training is so important that we need to deal with just for standard turns and crash, you need that to hold you in place and take care of yourself in the form of a big crash. But endurance is important. As of late ive been interested in triathlons and spent a lot of time swimming, biking and running. I have a Half Marathon to compete in this weekend. Im going to start off with a foot race an get into my car racing. Its very big part of what all drivers do is being fit. Jimmie thats a great. I ran my first Half Marathon this year. Whats your time goal . I ran 1 29 last year. I thoep be back. I heard youre closing in on fivesixminute miles. I just finished at 17 minutes. Im proud of myers. Thats hope for me jimmy. Theres hold. You completed. Thats all that matters. I heard you get car sick when youre not driving. Its true. Watching. And another big race. That fire started just after midnight in a highrise near San Francisco state university. No word yet on what may have caused that fire. And the snowstorm hammering the northeast today has led to some major problems at our airports especially sfo. Dozens of incoming and Outgoing Flights have already been canceled. That number only expected to grow throughout the day as that storm intensifies. So if you are flying out, check ahead. Traffic and weather coming up right after the break. Good morning. San mateo bridge slower than normal out of hayward in the commute direction westbound 92 because of an earlier stall on the highrise. So expect extra delays there mornings past the toll plaza. And if you can see traffic, it is slow right now in westbound 237. The low clouds and fog obviously moved in from milpitas but traffic is backed up to zanker road. Also, up and down the nimitz freeway northbound 880, looks like this as you approach your downtown oakland exits. By the way, there are fog advisories for a couple of bridges. Richmond san rafael bridge and the bay bridge. However, mass transit is all on time. Thats traffic. Heres lawrence. That tough fog very thick in spots this morning thick enough we are seeing delays at sfo of over an hour on arriving flights and you can see why. We have that thick fog thats moved in once again. It should begin to lift in the next hour or so and then as we head toward the afternoon, well find a few clouds and a little sunshine. The rain line staying mainly to the north although a slight chance of sprinkles north of the golden gate bridge. These temperatures by the afternoon pushing near 70 degrees in san jose and about 68 in livermore, 67 in fairfield and about 65 degrees in oakland. I think as we head in toward tomorrow, still some partly cloudy skies. Clouds thickening up late in the day on saturday with a chance of rain saturday night into early sunday morning. Manuel bojorquez is across the border in South Carolina where almost nothing is moving. Manuel, good morning. Reporter clood morning, norah, charlie, and gayle. Were in the middle of main street here. The freezing rain has turned into snow as you can see. The Capitol Building in the background, what would normally be a very busy scene was more like a ghost town and here is why. Difficult really to get around here. Not only is there this snow thats falling but beneath that a very thick layer of ice. Very hard to walk on let alone drive. There are parts of the city that are like an ice rink right now. The ice continues also to weigh down trees, snapping branches bringing down powerlines and knocking out power. 300,000 people without power this morning. Crews have been working throughout the night trying to restore those leans and clear those trees. The latest death in the state was a driver who struck a fallen tree. Troopers have responded to more than 3,000 calls for help in the state and 9,000 crashes. We saw the dangers first hand driving up i95. A tree fell just two vehicles in front of us. Luckily everyone stopped in time. The snow continues to fall here. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing for at least a few hours this afternoon allowing for a partial thaw but anything left will refreeze tonight. Charlie, norah, and gayle. Manny bojorquez, be savefe out there. Washington, d. C. Is shut down. Philadelphia could see more than half a foot of snow. Areas away from the coastline could see a lot more than that. Megan megan glaros of our affiliate wbbm is here in studio. Therein lies the difference. Huge amounts of snowfall inland while near the coastline well see a rain mix. Even in new york city well see rain by around 3 00 this afternoon. That will start to dampen a little bit. Lets take you closer and show you whats happening right now where new york is being hit by a very intense line of snow oftentimes near the line is where it falls. Eventually out to sea, but there will be so much to clean up. In fact, as much as 12 to 18 inches could extend really from parts of new jersey all the way on up potentially as far north as into vermont and new hampshire. What were seeing is the low pressure moves up the coast line. Also in combination with high tide because of a full moorngs we have a risk for coastal flooding from new jersey up to maine. Its not great risk but one of the angles of the storm. As well the winds will kick up the snow making the whiteout conditions as well. Norah, charlie, gayle. Thank you, megan. For decades scientists and on tre pre nears have tried to reinvent mae, but a Missouri Company believes its on the cutting edge. In a moment well talk with the ceo and founder of beyond meat. This is where its done . Yes. Where are the chickens . Exactly. There are no chickens at the beyond meat plant in columbia missouri. No cattle but sack asnd things like carrot fiber, pea protein and soy meal which brown and his company are transformed into what he calls chicken strips and beef crumbles. I call it chicken. I shudder when people say its fake meat. Reporter brown is trying to make his product indistinguishable with those things from the baeks and the hoshs. You can smell the aroma coming from that. Its being flavored. Reporter flavor is easy to master. Its the chew thats difficult to master, even with this texture analyzer. Do you have human testers, people that masticate . We do. I love that word. Masticators. The product is grilled, bagged and shipped to 4,000 stores nationwide. Do you envision a day when people say, thats the juiciest piece of protein theyve ever tasted . Brown says he sees nuggets wings, and even a fulfill lay. For now he doesnt want to bite off more than he can chew. For cbs this morning, Dean Reynolds columbia missouri. Beyond meat is on the list of the 50 moat invadive companies. Ethan brown, congratulations on that. Thank you very much. I had a little moment where i thought how can you hold your face if you dont like it. You dont want to insult the guest. Its really tasty. For those of us who like meat youre not asking us to give it up. Thats correct. We can create meat with plant based materials entirely. At the end of the day if youre having meat and chicken, its better for you and better for the environment. But heres somebody who had a relationship with a farm. Your dad had a hoppy farm. You had access to a farm how you ended up here. I grew up in the city but we spent an enormous amount of time at our farm. My dad had dairy cattle there. Early on i was never able to get past the question of the cows and for example my dog being very similar. I was never to say one should be treated one way and the other another way just because ones in the home and ones in the barn. That ultimately stuck with me. I started to see the human Health Climate change animal resource issues and it motivated me to get back into it. Youre a vegan. So that motivates you which is great if youre a vegetarian, so why do you want to ateeat meat then . Its a great question and its fascinating. Weve been ating it for 2. 3 million years. We dont want to walk away from that. Lets take the amino fats from it and taking the animal entirely out of the equation. I often think of the automotive sector when we got writ of horse and carriage. Were trying to do the same with animal protein. What was the breakthrough that enabled you to do this . It its absolutely around the five. That to us is the holy grail. We have proms called chicken 2. 0 and meat 2. 500. We focus around it. How do you get funding . You said bill gates is involved. It was nervous. I had a chance to sit down with him twice. A terrific guy, super nice. I initially received funding from perkins. They stuck their neck out. Its not something they usually do. Connected with bill gates and then the folks from twitter. Theyve fwn very supportive. We have really strong people behind the company. Are you saying dont eat meat . No. Im saying lets not eat animal protein. Whos your par debt . About 70 million are reducing their consumption. 51 of Greenhouse Gases are due to livestock. If we could reduce it by 25 we could address a huge amount of the Climate Change problem. Thats your goal. 20 20. Let them taste it. Ethan brown, thanks so much. Thank you, very much. Hey, pauley whats up. No, everythings fine. I quit. Tell me how you feel about jordan bellefonte as a character you created based on his real life story . I met jordan in 2007 after i signed on to write the screenplay and i found him immediately enormously likeable charming obviously incredibly smart, one of the most gifted public speakers id ever met, which makes a lot of sense. Obviously this is a guy whos incredibly persuasive to people. I picked up on that right away. For me personally i had a lot of similarities with jordan. I grew up in brooklyn. He grew up in queens. We were the same age. Did you grow up with drugs and prostitutes . No, thats where we differed. What was it his childhood. I totally understood that desire to grow up and be somebody and make a lot of money. Actually we had die very subsequent paths. I was working for merrill lynch. I was on the Trading Floor the day the markets crashed. I went to l. A. To be a writer. The stars are incredible but can you address the criticism that you glorified this really bad guy essentially and theres a lot of sex and a lot of drugs in this film in a really kind of dirty way. A lot of people were hurt. It was not my job as a writer to take a position on jordan. My job was, i felt to tell the story honestly. He really had parties where there were prostitutes and naked ladies running through the office . Yes. What you see on screen is exactly what went on. I dont think anybody needs me to tell you thats bad behavior. We wanted it to be sold as jordan. He tells you or sells you his story by the end of it and youre going along for this ride and its funny or amusing. By the end of it when it turns dark, you realize, wow, ive been sold a bill of goods by this guy. You are essential i will one those people. So that was sort of the stylistic choice. In the end and today, hes a salesman. Yes. Thats what he did. Leonardo told me the hardest things were to get were the speeches. Yeah. There were some four or fivepage speeches that were dense, a rollercoaster ride. Theyre had to write. I cant imagine having to stand up in front of 300 people in a room and read it over and over again. Unfortunately jordan had never taped any of those things. I asked him. I said if i could film a Conference Room up with assistants could you recreate one of those speeches for me. Was he good . He was unbelievable. He had a minute to warm up and he became the guy. Then we get to see the real jordan. He makes a came yeo in the movie. Listen, youre up for an oscar. Youre working with Martin Scorsese and leonardo dicaprio. And jonah hill. Youre right, charlie. Whats that mean to you . Its more meaningful to me. Its crazy to say this out loud. Martin scorsese was the reason i got into this business. When i saw taxi driver as 15yearold, its the one that got me. This one, i didnt know what to make of it. It got me interested. To Flash Forward 31 years, im waiting for the alarm clock to go off and its still 1977. Martin knows your number. He does. And i get to call him marty. Terence winter thank you so much.
