Take a good look, you may not have ever seen anything quite like it. Workers protesting because their boss was fired. In june, the board of directors of Market Basket, a 71 store Supermarket Chain in new england dismissed Company President arthur ddemollis the board controlled by arthur ts cousin arthur who wanted more of the profits to go to shareholders, less to employees. In what amounted to an epic family feud Market Basket stores hemorrhaged money, an estimated 1 million a day, thanks to a customer boycott in sympathy with the employee walkout. No one will ever walk 20,000 people who walked out for one man. But we did. The employee revolt at Market Basket raises a question, especially over this labor day weekend, is there a connection between workers feeling well treated by their employers and the bottom line . There is lots of evidence the answer is yes. Here is just one example. Track for 15 years stock in fortune magazines 100 best companies to work for in america, way outperformed both the s p 500 and the russell 3,000 indices. For every one good company, great place to work, how many awful ones are there . I think it is more like the vast majority are mediocre. Robert leveling knows the good from the bad. He is one of the creators of the 100 best companies to work for list. What did you discern as the common denominators in what would make a Great Workplace . It is actually the relationship of trust, they create a certain kind of culture that what we usually hear them talk about is either a family like environment or a team like environment. Your employees, you call team members, is that psychological mumbo jumbo or does it really mean something to say team member . Well, it means you are part of a team, you are a member of a team. And that is real . It is real at whole foods and part of our culture. John mac question is cofounder of whole foods market. At number 44 it is one of only 13 companies who have made the list every year since fortune started publishing it. In 1998. How do you see your relationship with your employees . I become like a father. How is your knowledge of cheese . It is actually really good and getting better. Whole foods employees 85,000 people in 390 stores. This one is in boulder, colorado. When the team members are happy and enjoy their work they give Better Service to the customers and then if customers are happy, they continue to shop with the store, they that is correct blue cord of mouth and the business flourishes, it prospers. You are kidding me, yeah, i know. Louis carp is a store team leader, aka store manager. It takes team members a few month to get the joke, we really walk the talk in this store. Full disclosure here the people we talked to were pick by whole foods. Well, to make the world a better place one day at a time. Including jane musaau doing his own scissor hand move on meat. For being an ambassador in a store is more important than money for example. I would definitely say it is. And if they sound like they have been drinking the koolaid that is best exactly Companies Like whole food try very hard 0 to achieve because it is rare. According to a gallup study, only three out of ten workers are engaged, meaning committed to or enthusiastic about their work. Gallup estimates that actively disengaged employees cost u. S. Business up to 550 billion a year in lost productivity. The most important way to have people engaged in their jobs is to make sure that you have done a good job of hiring people in the first place. Robert pass 7 calls himself cwo, chief wagon officer. As in radio flyer wagons. You might have had one. More than 100 million have been sold since passe in. s italian immigrant grandfather started the business in chicago nearly 97 years ago. Everyone asks why is it called radio flyer and my grandfather just thought the two words were really cool and future risk so he put them on the wagon and had nothing to do g with the product. Radio flyer is number 13 on fortunes list of best Small Companies to work for. Everything seems to either have a wagon or is red. We love wagons and we love red. You see toys everywhere and signs that the companys 64 employees called flyers have a good time. Spike it. Perfect. But the point of the fun and games is to make sure nothing gets in the way of the business of fun and games. It is a place where flyers like mary kate ventorini live by the little red rule, which is . That every time we touch peoples lives they will feel great about radio flyer. It is a place where feedback is as important as innovation. Nice. Before you pass all of this off as the latest management fad, consider this. You know, over the past ten years we have grown the company by three times. It is not a theory. This is real. Robert levering. These companies we talk about, the radio flyer or whole foods and so on, so on, these are Real Companies with real people that are doing things in a way that succeeds. That is a message that companies can get. Oh. A postscript to the Market Basket fight we told you about. We did it. We won. We have at back, thats all we wanted. Late wednesday the board agreed to a billion and a half dollar deal in which arthur t will buy out his cousin arthur s. There we go. Instead of demonstrating, the employees have been out celebrating. And are already back on the job. Cowan next, napping, mapping our american destiny. Cowan and now a page from our sunday morning almanac. August 31st, 1803, 211 years ago today. The start of lewis and clarks most excellent adventure. From that day, mary weather lewis pushed off from pittsburgh harbor, heading west on a journey that would make history. Lewis started 55foot long keelboat and aptly named seamen, together, they would travel down the ohio river. I partner, william clark. Men were on a mission authorized by president thomas jefferson, who was on the territory from france, for a mere 15 million. The territory doubled the size of the young nation and jefferson persuaded congress to appropriate 2,500 dollars to fund a small expedition. The discover the map the new acquisition and just maybe find a northwest passage, a river to river all water route across the continent which the president believed would be a boom to commerce. It was a perilous outing that launched officially the following may from camp wood near st. Lewis heading northwest up the missouri to north dakota, then west to their final destination, fort at the mouth of the Columbia River just west of portland. As they traveled, clark was charting their course and making maps while lewis was often ashore studying rock formations, soil, animals and plants. With the prospect of crossing as yet unexplored indian territory, the expedition hired an indian to act as their interpreter. Lewis and clark would establish relations with two dozen indian nations to help their expedition survive harsh winters and find their way across the vast ranges of the rocky mountains. They never did find that northwest passage, lewis and clark did contribution a wealth of information about the Natural World of the west and carved out a path that would eventually help expand america from sea to shining sea. Cowan coming up, this is a small trick. This tree is about 76 meters, the tallest tree is almost 116. Cowan nature by the numbers. Cowan what better way to spend sunday, a Holiday Weekend than taking a walk in the woods the redwoods, to be exact. Carter evans will be our guide. Reporter in every walk with nature, one receives far more than he sees. Fitting words from americas most famous naturalist, john muir, known as the father of Americas National parks. Well recently, a new generation of natural wanderers embarked on a Monumental Task in the natural monument named in his honor, the muir woods. We are all going to get wet. Chief wildlife biologist for the park service is leading the team of grade schoolers into the woods armed with a video camera on a pole. Now, the fun thing about this is we dont know exactly what we are going to find. He and his volunteers were part of a bold effort called a bio blitz. Lets pick one plant to focus on, lets pick this one right here. It is a 24hour inventory of every species living in the 116 square mile area. Organized by National Geographic and the National Park service more than 300 scientists led swarms of school kids, families and volunteers on a mission to count every type of plant, animal, and insect. What is it . Approach the tree. Lets take a look, yes. Thats it. Right in the middle of it. No fear. Part of the cataloging was to see if they could videotape those sleeping in the hollow of giant redwoods. What would be one of those telltale signs. It would be guano. Where there is guano there are bats. Yes, there are bats. Looking for bat poop and you know bats have been there . Yes. Did you see any . No. Stretching from the edge of San Francisco to the towering redwoods of muir woods, the Golden Gate NationalRecreation Area sees 14 million visitors every year, but what scientists want to know is, not who visits, rather what calls this park home. Normally you have park rangers at you yelling at you to get back on the trail but today is a free pass. Michael let his team of amateur scientists to muir beach. Go out a little bit. Whare the Redwood Creek meets the pacific ocean. Are you coming this way . We suited up to follow along. Now. As we waded through mud and brackish water in the newly restored tiled lagoons our goal was to tally every fish in our trawl. Go ahead and get on your knees and get fish and put them in the bucket. We found plenty of baby fish. Fish that have adapted to live in both the ocean and freshwater. I see this, i think i actually see the kids making a connection with their natural resources. They are seeing they actually do have fish in their backyard and they get excited about it. Above it all was steve just hanging out. 25 stories above the ground. This is a small tree. This tree is about 76 meters, the tallest tree is almost 116 and still growing. The professor of ecology at californias Humboldt State was part of the first team to ever survey the tops of these giant redwoods. When you can get out in the woods and particularly if you get up into the canopy in such a large organism, there is a point where you lose sight of yourself and a real calm that comes over. Hundreds of feet above the ground, he counted more than 40 different sees cities of lichen from the redwood branches and he studies the trees growth rates by taking core samples. You push a, punch a hole in the trumping and pull this trunk of wood out and it is revealed here. Like looking at a history book. It is. That is what is cool about trees. They report record everything that happens to them in their rings. Here is another one just like it. In all of this, the scientists and volunteers recorded more than 2,300 different types of plants and animals including an Mountain Lion all in San Franciscos backyard. You dont have to be a professional scientist to do this. You can be a citizen scientist and discovering the biodiversity of the National Park is truly an american experience. This year marks the 100th anniversary of john muirs death and the world has dramatically change, yet somehow the magnificent redwoods and the forest that bears his name have adapted and thrive. Can. The nearest scale of this ecosystem humbles, we think we are so damned important and you walk in here and realize you are just a tiny little creature. We only have the tiny little life spans compared to these trees, and yet they never can move. Look what they can do standing in one place for 1,000 years. What can we learn from that . A lot. I think. Cowan still to come i will never be the same pop musics Christopher Cross. Cowan and. The british are coming. ,,,,,, cowan 200 years ago this past week, smoke and ash lingered in the air over what remained of our nations capitol, and british troops were to blame. Mo rocca tells the story of one fiery night. Reporter 200 years ago this month 4,000 british soldiers lay siege to washington, d. C. And set fire to the u. S. Capital and the white house. And the burn marks on the white house walls are still there. We now have evidence of the car marks, the scorching that what happened when flames were going out through open windows and doors and licked up around the tops of the stone. William almond is the white house curator. Is this the best evidence of the one time enemy forces were in our nations capitol . As far as i know. The burning of washington was the darkest moment for the United States and president James Madison in the war of 1812. A sort of second war of american independence. The write tissue, british had been interfering with american trade at stay and kidnapping sailors. American efforts to expand westward and north into canada were moving thwarted by the british. Two years into the war with the americans in retreat, British Forces reached the nations capital. What was washington like in 1814. Miserable, tiny, small, strung out. William allen is historian emeritus for the capitol. That was construction site. It was a construction site and stone yards and brick yards and kilns and just a mishmash. The capitol dome hadnt yet been built but the original House Chamber located on the site of todays statuary hall was an architectural masterpiece, recreated in these digital images. Many people describe it as the most beautiful room in america, it had this glorious feeling of the 100 skylights. Was it a fireproof room . The room was fireproof except for the ceiling. And that of course was the achilles heel of the room. The ceiling was wooden and all they had to do of course was to catch the ceiling on fire, when it fell down the rest of the room would be destroyed. The heat was intense. The glass in the skylights melted, came molten and fell down in large chunks. The capitol stonewalls survived as well as the senate vestibule with its distinctive corncob columns. And what is the significance of the corncobs . Well, the significance is the american plant in a classical way sort of thinking the way classical architects would have thanthought, it is a very port staple of the american diet, of the american economy. And fighting with the british that night were former american slaves. You know the british brilliantly exposed a real weak side the american society, and that was slavery and our dependence on slaves. Historian seeing vogel is author of a flow by blow account of washingtons capture. And they offered freedom to slaves in this region, the chesapeake, said, you know, come over to our side, you know, we promise you freedom and if you want to, by the way you can fight against your former masters. From the capitol, navy admiral george co born and ross and 150 redcoats marched to the white house. So the british came right through here. Right through here. Up these steps,. And again white house curator bill almon. And they walked in and what do you think their First Impression was . I think that it was a pretty goodsize house but not a palatial one. No buckingham palace. No buckingham palace, no versailles that it was reasonably well decorated. The Biggest Surprise . A dinner set for 40, so the british feasted in the white house dining room before burning the mansion down. Here too the walls survived, but little remains of what was once inside. What does is an american icon. This is the east room, largest room in the house. This is the room where Teddy Roosevelts kids used to roller skate . Yes. Like this one. And this is the room where susan ford had her senior prom. Thats right. So more importantly this is the room with this is the fulllength portrait of george washington, it has been restored and this is the one that Dolly Madison saved, she already packed upstate papers, red velvet drapes she put in the oval room so then as a lastminute oh we have to save general washington and she gave the instructions to get it off the wall and it was bolted on. Hard to get off. They had to pretty much cut the frame open and lift the canvas out on its stretcher. Who did that . Servants, the maitre d and one of the family slaves. She was also busy cramming silverware in her purse, right . Yep, she was trying to save everything she could, including her personal things. As a rule the british invaders didnt loot, but one soldier grabbed this. And this is believed to be madisons personal little traveling medicine chest that was taken from the white house by one of the british troops. Later passed to a member of one of the naval forces and then descended in his family until it was given to Franklin Roosevelt in 1939. Given back. Given back. And we are whispering right now because the current president is being interviewed right under us. Correct. Okay. After torching the white house, the british burned the buildings housing the department of state, treasury and war. Concluding one of the most devastating days in american history. Can you imagine to see after the british had departed washington, the capitol and the white house are smouldering shells, the American Army has abandoned the city, nobody knows where president madison or the cabinet are. It is really impossible to think of many more despondent, desperate moments in american history. A union jack flew over the capitol. It difficult, a lot of people pelt that the young republic was coming to an end, the american experiment was dying in its infancy. Fearing an American American counterattack the British Occupation of washington lasted only a day. Among its overlooked heroes . State Department Clerk stephen mess san on the who hid the declaration of independence in a virginia mansion. Six months later, the war ended in a virtual stalemate. And british leader George Coburn returned home where his portrait features washington blazing in the background. You dont have to ask. If these walls would talk what would they say . If they would talk about one moment they would say we are certainly happy we are Still Standing here and still occupying this spot and the president s have lived here 200 years since the fire. You know what i think they would say . Ouch. When in july is just dandy. Cowan up next, joan rivers in her own words. Comedian joan rivers flames serious condition in new yorks mount sinai hospital this morning, over the years rivers has been a very familiar face, including right here on sunday morning. Back in 2002 we asked her for some thoughts about aging and we figured it was an appropriate time to listen again to just what she had to say. When sunday morning called and asked if i thought old search better i said of course. Because i thought they were talking about greek ruins and then i realized they were talking about people, old peopleable and i thought, why ask oui . Did i say that already, first of all i do not think i am old, sure i am probably the only woman in new york city who has an autographed copy of the Ten Commandments signed by the author but then i decided maybe i am what the french call a woman of certain age, the term a woman of a certain age by the way means a woman who can make her own way to the intensive care ward of any hospital which is a depends counter of any drugstore who is still considered arm candy for men like john thurmon and the pope and this thinking about it for a while i realized that getting older is better. Be, let me give you some examples, take your eyesight for example, even with glasses as we get older our eyes get so blurred you cant see anything so when you look in the mirror even on allows situate day you look great. And old search better because old people know things that young people dont know, such as how to speak in complete sentences and who won world war ii and develop questions that cannot be answered by hello, and whatever. And duh, and most important of all, you know that sex doesnt have to be great as long as you are, as long as the room you are having it in, sure. Sometimes i say to myself, joan, joan, joan, come on you would like to be younger wouldnt you overall i think age is great, first of all, men snoring, no longer bothers me, i am hard of hearing. I am never, ever bored. I just play connect the liver spots with my hands. I no long very to worry about my panty lines, they are covered. You are looking at ms. Fabulous. I am not bragging but you know i am invited to at least three maybe four funerals a day . What is the best, best, best thing about aging . When you are old, everybody thinks your life is just dandy even though the truth is you are not wise, it is just that people who know how stupid you are dead. So you can always have the advantage. Chase. So you can cowan last year we brought you the story of a friend of cbs who fled iraq for a better life here in america. Since we last visited him, he had some good news to report. Whether it is baghdad or bangladesh gaza or guatemala, the plight of those looking for a better life is only intensified the debate over immigration in this country. Last year we told you about one iraqi immigrant, a friend of mine who had made the leap, but when we last left him, his future remained uncertain. He moved from lancaster, pennsylvania in a place where the old so easily meshes with the new seemed a pretty fitting place to find old friend a new home. Good to see you again, my friend. Be good to see you. We hadnt seen each other in more than a decade since the unwelcome circumstance that first brought us together. The war in iraq. He was in baghdad on the eve of the u. S. Invasion that i first met hussein. He was an iraqi photographer, a camera man. Wellknown in baghdad for his work shooting soap operas and documentary cbs news hired him not only for his eye but for his language, and local knowledge. But it turned out his greatest asset was his courage. When u. N. Headquarters in baghdad was attacked in 2003, he kept his compassion, his composure, and his camera rolling. When the blast happened everything became dark, too dark, even i cant see my hand. I heard the people around me, laying, some of them dead, some of them injured, some of them crying, some of them screaming. And me, i am good. He led people to safety using the light on his camera, but it wasnt just the violence he covered. In his battered volkswagen bug we go bouncing around baghdad to find the touching too. We pound the baghdad symphony getting back to playing music again. We ventured to the baghdad zoo, stormed by looters who took every morsel of food for starving animals were fed and water thanks to the u. S. Military. And we went to a hospital maternity ward, towitness the first of the generation not born under the dictatorship of saddam hussein. Nice memories, nice. They are . They are nice, even though it was a tough time, difficult but you remember when you see them, you remember that you think you did something. We did do something. Yes, we did something, yes, for sure. But it all came with a price. Any iraqi working with westerners soon became a target. His brother who worked for a local tv channel in baghdad was murdered. It was a big shock for us and it was a big sign for me, some people told me you will be the next so take care. He they told me we would be next to steak care and leave the country. Baghdad would always be their hometown, but it was too dangerous to be home any longer. So five years ago azir and his family fled iraq, the threats against his family allowed him to get legal Refugee Status from the u. S. Government and with little more than they could carry they arrived in the u. S. So of all the places, why lancaster . It is quiet and peaceful town. But his wife ariz says the adjustment hasnt been easy. No, nobody know us, nothing. We start from zero. But we are a strong family. Strong indeed. But the price of their much deserved peace that they couldnt return to baghdad, not even when azirs mother passed away. I couldnt say goodbye to her because i was here. It made me cry for three days. That she died. He also lost his job as a camera man. There wasnt much of a need for a war photographer in the pennsylvania country side. So he took what he could find, his first job was here on an Assembly Line at a chicken processing plant. And then a job as a custodian at a Public School in lancaster. His College Degree was a little, little consequence in that job nor the fact the images his camera once captured were seen by millions, his station in life had indeed changed. And when we last visited he was a reality that brought him to tears. It is going to get better, though. I cant imagine it is not. The job is respectable, good job, but i had to do it because i need to survive to feed my family and now i have a big family. The sack ties meant he could provide for that family. His daughter, his son. Yes. And his twin girls, both born as u. S. Citizens late in 2012. The chance to start over was indeed a blessing, but azir told us back then there was still one gaping hole. I still have hope to find my real life as a camera man. You are not giving that up . No. Never. And he didnt. A few weeks after we visited, while he was vacuuming another classroom, his phone rang, it was kywtv in philadelphia, they had seen our sunday morning story and it turns out they were in need of a camera man. So you have got a vacuum cleaner in one hand and the money in the other hand you get to be a camera man get. You probably dropped the vacuum pretty quick. I dropped the vacuum and i turned it off right away and i said, i will exchange you with a camera. Within a few weeks, he was right back to earning a living as a news photographer. On this day covering a carjacking and the memorial that was set up for the victim. He is still covering life and death, but it is different now. Imagine i am cutting my camera and Walking Around the street with you, no one will attack me. Imagine that. It is different than what we were used to. Very different. Something else is different now too. Of the United States of america. Last month, azir became a u. S. Citizen. Azir hamis hussein. And two weeks later, he watch his wife become a citizen as well. [ applause ] thank you. I can tell this is not the ending, this is just a beginning. For our story, for our life, for our kids. But there are still a lot of challenges ahead. His job is only parttime at the moment. There are a few benefits and no health insurance. Not yet. But after all 0 he has been through, azir hussein will be the last person you hear complaining. You know, now i am living the american reality. I dont call it the American Dream. Why isnt ate dream . It is not a dream. It is real. I am living a normal life, i have a good family. Good job, so it is real, it is not an American Dream. It is an american reality. Cowan ahead telling people he was going to get cowan great expectations. And then he started telling people he was going to clemson. Great expectations. ,,,,,, cowan it is that time of year for students everywhere to head back to schools and colleges. Steve hartman has the story of one students unlikely, some thought even impossible dream. In spartanburg, South Carolina for the past 20 years, Danny Holcombe and his wife sue have kept a secret from their son. They have never told ryan who has Downs Syndrome there are some things in life he will never be able to do. Which is why when some of ryans friends left for college last year, he just figured he would go to. His parent say he even picked the college. He started telling people he was going to clemson. Did you brace him for the disappoint and tell him . Yes but he continues even. Although the holcombes didnt know it at the time ryans dream wasnt entire he out of the question. Clemson does have a program with people for intellectual disabilities but highly competitive. Every year more than 100 people apply for less than ten openings. Still, since ryan wasnt getting the hint they let him apply. The letter from admissions arrived a few months ago. And after sneak ago peak, peek, danny and sue recorded this on home video. We were waiting to see how he does react when it hits him. I got accepted is. He says i got accepted. And i think those words mean an awful lot. Which is total absolute joy. Are you happy . Yes. He is still just as happy as you were that day . Oh, yes. Earlier this month, ryan packed up for clemson. And thats the button right there that turns it on. Okay. The twoyear program will teach him job skills and how to live independently dont you need my help which i am sure his mother especially will appreciate. It is going to be challenging isnt it . Oh, yes, it is very challenging, yes. But you are up for it. Yes. 20 years ago there was no room for someone on campus for someone like ryan. Ready to go . But today more than 200 universities across the country offer some kind of program like this. All right. And ryan for one. Ryan couldnt be more grateful for the opportunity. He took instantly to college life. But his parents on the other hand i have always been able to control what he hears an sees and who he spends time with. They are losing their baby. It is not going to be easy. Proof that although Downs Syndrome can be overcome, empty nest syndrome remains incurable. What you like now has nothing to do with what you are going to be like. Cowan ahead, why everyone is talking about Tavi Gevinson. And. Cowan Christopher Crossing a new song. And ive got such a long way to go, to make it to the border of mexico. So i riding like the wind, ride like the win. It is sunday morning on cbs and here again is lee cowan. Cowan riding like the wind was just one of several huge hits for Christopher Cross back in the 1980s and though he may have stepped out of the spotlight for a while he is still searching for that perfect summer song, Serena Altschul found him at his home in austin, texas. Remember Christopher Cross . You can sail away, to find tranquility. Oh, the canvas can do miracles. In the early 1980s, his brand of silky soft rock said up the charts effort his songs were unavoidable on fm radio. It is the night, my bodys weak, i am over run, no time to sleep. And then as quickly as he burst on the scene he seemed to vanish from it. I was tsa and this is the year, maybe two years ago and a woman took my boarding pass and she said, looked through it has an accent, Christopher Cross there used to be a singer named that he passed away but he was a great singer. And i said, i passed away . Yeah. So when was that . She said a few years ago but he was a lovely singer and i loved his music. Ladies and gentlemen, advisory ferre cross. Luckily reports of Christopher Crosss demise have been greatly exaggerated. The 63yearold is alive and well and still touring. That when he isnt recording at his home studio in austin, texas. Platinum, platinum, platinum. I cant count, how many do you have. Oh, there are some, and there are Different Countries and stuff. While performer it is hard to be modest having a year like he did in 1980, his debut album, Christopher Cross went platinum five times over in the u. S. Alone. Christopher cross. Practically subsequent the grammys. Christopher cross. Beating out billy joel, barbra streisand, pink floyd and Frank Sinatra for album of the year. It was an out of body experience almost to continually go up there and having something to say because i had no prepared marks. I would like to say this is getting old, but i cant, this is wonderful, sail was supposed to be released as a single i am really plaid it was. That night he would take home five grammys in total. Let the wind carry me, soon i will be free. Reporter three of the awards that night was for the into expect if the hit sailing which according to cross isnt actually about sailing. I picked sailing as a metaphor because i used to do some sailing with an older kind of big brother person in my life. It was sort of an escape for me as far as the cast of my home and for me the song is about transition of art, so when i say the canvas can do miracles so it is about the painters canvas so the experience you go through art, whether dance, painting, music it is the interaction with art we music but i always joke to people if al had taken to me bowl it would have been like bowling. But fortunately he took me to do something that was kind of fun. The youngest of 5 in a military appeal that moved a lot, music was crosss escape from a childhood that was at times chaotic. I was the singing drummer in little bands but i learned pretty early on that the guitar players and the singer were up in the front where the exirls were, so i hugh thats where i needed to be. You needed to move from the back to the front. Cross spent his twenties playing covers in jam bands in texas. Sort of like the dream studio. It was during one of those jams that magic happened. His first hit riding like the wind was born. Remarkably riding like the wind actually started as a jam in the middle of a song by Paul Mccartney called 1995, wings, we used to play that song at the club and we, you have to play five sets a night you have to extend things and i started doing this jam and started going, about a, about a, about a. Ba, ba, and it is like wow, this is good. In barely a year he went from playing fraternity parties to selling out stadiums. I was nowhere in sight when the church bells rang. What did you do to someone do have that kind of instant media, meteoric rise to game. It is a pretty hard question to answer because on one level it is sort of fantastic and i feel incredibly blessed but on the other hand it was tough because it was just it all happened so quickly that, you know, there is no way to catch your breath or be prepared for it. You get rushed along in this river of game. Best that you can do is fall in love. In 1982, he won an oscar for arthurs theme featured in thea3 dudley moore theme arthur. I was waiting to go on to sing arthur and bette midler was waiting to come present my award after i came out. She had the envelope and i dont know her but i was so nervous, and i said, you know, you are so used to this you are a big star and i am so terrified right now. And she said, dont worry, kid, it is just you, the mike and 70 million people. In 1983, cross cracked the top ten again with pink aurora, with top ten hits and for many that would be the last they would hear from Christopher Cross although he continued to put out records. Some 30 odd years, nine studio al buns and two divorces later, cross says his greatest success is his three children. Which he acknowledges in a song on his new album. Youre my hero. You are what matters. All the things in my life. If this Christopher Cross could speak with that 30, 31yearold Christopher Cross, what would he say . You know what . I dont think i really made any mistakes per se but i think my father al alws used to say one of the tragedy of lives is experience is not transferable and i dont think i could say anything to that Christopher Cross at the time it is just something that comes with time and experience. Today, cross and his music are edging back into the spotlight. Tina fey even nodded to cross on the Television Show third rock. Christopher crossings a, crossings cross sphinx. Like he turned into a song called lemon stein. Through it all, cross seemed remarkably at peace with his place in pop culture. I wish i could go back and do it again but at the same time, you know, some people will ask me what is it like to have all of this early success and to a degree the success it didnt continue because it was such a meteoric thing and i tell them i feel incredibly lucky to have had the success i have had because it established my name and still out during the day and here doing this incredible show which i love, so, you know, success is that level of blessing no matter how and when it comes. Cowan ahead, why time off is time well spent. Cowan taking the day off . It is about time. Our contributor. Happy labor day, in tribute to the hard workers, i hope you are working hard at doing nothing and i dont mean that ironically, it make us better at our jobs and gives us a chance to unplug and reboot and other technological metaphors which didnt exist when labor day was made a holiday 120 years ago, however the average American Workers leaves four Vacation Days a year unused, according to expedia. Americans chose not to take more than 500 million available days off from work, why arent we pushing back from our desks . The most common reason is to accumulate days for possible future trips, but the there aree hopeful reasons, some workers say they cant afford a vacation, others say their work is life and others is the fear of the view of their employers who takes all their days. Some describe them as less dedicated, some as less productive and ten percent as less likely to be promoted. If only your boss understood that you would come back with a souvenir for her that says my employee went to the beach and all i got was this louse city tshirt plus new and revived company loyalty, it is time to rethink the American Work ethic, according to the center or Economic Policy research the u. S. Is the only advanced economy that does not require employers to provide paid vacation time, almost a quarter of americans receive no paid holidays, and most of those folks are low wage workers on small, or Small Business employees, Everybody Needs a break, especially the guy who fished your motherinlaws watch out of your toilet and the lady who remembered to make your decaf chia in almond mick, workers in the European Union are legally guaranteed at least 20 paid Vacation Days per year. What about the industrious japanese, they only get ten days, before you dismiss vacations as something that will make americans as soft as french cheese consider this, if we used all of our time off, our economy would benefit for more than 160 billion in sales and would support 1. 2 million jobs. Lets not make the American Work ethic face time in overtime, it should be vision and innovation and we need to get a fresh air for that. Boldness is not bred in cubicles. Are we done . Okay. Good, because i need a vacation. Cowan Tavi Gevinson has been called one of the most influential 18yearolds in america, dont know her . Well you are about to. We will let Anthony Mason make the introductions. This is the house i have been in my entire life. In her entire life, all 18 years of it, tavi Tavi Gevinson has already been a fashion icon, at age 12, an internet publisher at age 15, and a film actress at age 17. I just want to consume everything. You just want to consume everything . Yeah. Her room in her parents suburban home in oak park, ill noise is a a coffey os, everythg from barbie dolls to salinger books to 45 rpm records, her collection includes Frank Sinatra. I am just a hoarder, basically. What you are making here is an episode of hoarders, i am sorry. But the week we visited Tavi Gevinson is packing up her room to move to new york and the bright lights of broadway. How long have you been rehearsing . We started rehearsing in mid may. This september, she is starting in the play this is our youth. What you are like now has nothing to do with what you are going to be like, like right now you are just rich little burnt out rebels but ten years from now you are going to be like a Plastic Surgeon reminiscing about how wild you used to be. When the steppenwolf theatre opened its production in chicago this summer the Chicago Tribune wrote Tavi Gevinson gives ill luminous performance that could easily make her the broadway it girl of next season. You never have been involved in anything quite this big before . No. How does that feel . It is wild. But i cant really even like let myself think about it because coming here is much scarier, it is like we are just playing, on the best playground ever. Force so yeah. She was just a lesson when she began posting her avant garde thoughts about fashion online. This is my dads office. Right. He is a retired complish teacher. His english teachers desk. Yes. Apples my managers desk. And when i started my blog i use his computer. Herself portraits, many shot in her backyard, caught the attention of top designers and fashion editors, like vogues anna wintour, and she was invited to fashion week in new york and in paris. What prompted you to start the blog . I think at the end of sixth grade it was like i had been rejected by that group, i didnt fit into this group, so it was kind of like well i can do this as a hobby to myself and by dressing this way i am completely exempting myself from even being ranked in the comparisons in middle school. Thats really interesting, because i mean so many kids in middle school and Even High School want to dress like everybody else so they feel included. It wasnt even like i want to stand out, it was just like i dont even want to have to think about being compared to that girl or who is prettier or like i just need to have no peer. At school, she was teased but not deterred. Was it girls or guys . Guys even it was guys . Pies who couldnt understand why you werent like trying to impress them. Like one time this kid who has a loud locker next to mine you dressed like a curtain and it seemed to make him so angry, so i just said just wait i will wear a tutu tomorrow. It was like a game, it was fun. In high school she launched the website rookie, a kind of cultural headquarters for teenage girls that won her an allegiance of fans. You werent afraid to be ambitious. I was at first and i still am every day a little bit because we dont live in a world that is necessarily really liken counseling for young women to be ambitious or to be confident or take what is yours. She also began auditioning for films, landing a role in enough said, starring the late James Gandolfini and julia lewis dreyfuss. Come on. We are not buying the same dress. I wont wear it at the same time as you. You look stupid. How old were you when you got interested in theatre . And what got you interested in theatre . It is how i was raised. I mean, when i was two my sister would put curlers in my hair and like teach me Shirley Temple songs, like it was just really a part of our home. But home and high school are behind her now. At new yorks Court Theatre in this is our youth she will be starring with concern culkin and Michael Sarah as Three Friends grappling with growing up. And the way you act and all of your passion fatly held beliefs will be completely different and it is really depressing. You wanted this part badly. Yes. Why . Well, obviously, i think a lot about youth and about this time in a persons life and what makes it so interesting and strange and bitter sweet. Let me find those emails. She has a quarter of a million twitter followers and from her new apartment will continue to edit rookie. But Tavi Gevinson has graduated. The teenage fashion icon is now a new york cover girl. You are on broadway. Yeah. Wow . I mean, yes, but also like i have to do my job and think of like i cant be up here and think like, i am on broadway. Kind of a pitch me moment for you . Absolutely. My whole life. But there is a lot of complex response because it is not a complex thing. It is just wonderful. Thats it. Anthony mason introducing us to Tavi Gevinson.
