We are still learning more about what just happened from archives and from the personal witness of those who somehow survived. The cover story is reported by lee cowan. The train arrives, people getting on and lining up at the platform. Pretty soon they will be told men to one side and women to the others. You remember this vividly . K, exactly. Talk with iran weiss to touch the hofl cost is a personal way. This is the road to the faschambers. Shes a survivor, and yet seven decades later, she is barely believe that it actually happened. At first it was pretty hard to talk about, wasnt it . It was extremely difficult, but i realized we have to share the story. We cant let people she was just 13 when the box car carrying her and her family arrived at auschwitz on that all too busy platform. What happened when the doors on the cattle door opened. There was barking orders to get out, and my father, and lined up with the women and children and elderly in another line. Where did your mom go . She and a very large number of people from the train were headed right to the gas chamber. Paib in a half hour they were all dead. That was hefr childhood reality. But the older she grew, the more unimaginable it all seemed, until one day when she heard about a set of photos she never knew existed. I remember getting out of the train and traumatic. The very moment . Yeah. They were taken by the naziings on the auschwitz platform the day irene arrived. Im leaving to see where my little sister went. We were confined to barracks, and the very first thing we said is when are we going to see our families. They pointed to the chimney and they said, toos where youre parents are. Thats where your family s. Pointed to the chimney. The chimney. And we said it cannot be. And then theres this photo that captured irenes family waiting in line for the auschwitz gas chamber. These two little boys are my two little brothers. And for a long time i could not find my mother here. And then one day i saw this sticking out, and when i looked with a magifying glass, i found her. Thats her . Right in there. The holocaust, it seems continues even now to reveal its horrific reality, and not just to survivors like irene weiss. At the United States Holocaust Museum washington dc, a 13 year project uncovered evidence that the number of places where the holocaust was put into practice are far more numerous than anyone imagined. When you started this, what was your sense of the scope . I thought 5,000 or 7,000 was an astounding number. What did that mean . Were now at 22,000. Thats six times what you thought. Exactly. When you mutt them altogether, its a shock. Jeffrey is the lead editor of a multivolume encyclopedia being written on the holocaust. His research doesnt change the number of people exterminated. What it does it enumerate the number of killing centers, ghettos, brothels, and forced labor camps theyal exterminated jews, poles, prisoners of war, and others too. What does it say about the notion that it was just taking place in a few corners of europe, and a few mad men. It destroys t. To say thaw didnt know camps or what was going on in the camps that were local, it would have been impossible. Which raises the question, just who beyond the notorious s. S. Was complicit in the persecution. For 70 years, german women, for example, were thought to be largely innocent bystanders, but disturbing new research to be releaseed in a book this week paints a portrait of womens participation in the holocaust. They too could be brutal killers. Ti. Takes a certain cognitive ability to organize mass murder on this scale. And women are not innocent of that, they have that cognitive ability. And wendy lauer says a generation of women were swept up in the nazi movement. Banners like this one reading women and girls, and jews are your ruin were pervasive. She points to 23yearold erma petri who stumbleed on six jewish children that escape friday a train. She was so anxious to prove her loyalty to the reich that she shot them all in the back of the head. Another moved to be a secretary. One day on a visit to a jewish ghetto, one inquisitive child got too close. She picked up the child by the legs and slammed it against a ghetto wall like shaking the dust out of a carpet. These women werent military or under orders to kill. Its just what they knew. They did it willingly. They werent just conforming or getting along. They were ideologically hooked. I was very enthusiastic. There was no time they would have doubted anything. You were proud to be a nazi . Yeah, i was really proud. Oh, yes. Ursula knows about getting ideologically hooked. She was a member of the hitler youth at the tender age of 10, forced to join. Everything the nation did was all right. Everything that hitler did was all right. And bad things were if bad things were done by the party, hitler didnt know she later became a nurses aide. One day an injured russian p. O. W. Brought up. She was taught to hate anything not purely german. Ordered to kill him instead of treat him. What happened next surprised her. Ive never felt a wave of hatred like that before. And i was just about to yes, you kill him . Yeah. Thats what i would have been saying. Thats one realization that always stayed with me. I could have killed. She didnt, as far as she knows that p. O. W. Surviveed and ursula moveed to the u. S. As a scholar and spent hear life teaching at the university of santa barbara, but her fautsy past still haunts her to this day . Have you forgiven yourself . Thats a hard one. Yeah, in part. Ive got to live with myself. She now counts among her friends, holocaust survivor who is bear a different kind of witness. The extent of the nazi brutality may only be coming to light to nazi researchers now, but for irene weiss it was always there. Maybe a nonquestion, but do you ever wonder why you survived . Pure chance in every way. There were so many chances to die, ask so many chances to survive another day. The system was rigged against survival. A table at the moulan rouge next. Once the trails are cut, then we can take our bridges back out, and put in the checkpoints and all thats involved. Robert is the brother and fellow owner of the maze. He took us up to the lookout for a view. It must be a happy surprise to see the finished product. We always wonder how its going to work out. It has done well for us. It seems peculiar at first to hear that the maze is made up of sterile corn with fewer kernels. Its softer and does less bodily harm. A good thing, because richardsons say some throw ears at each other. Soyou raise sterile corn so people doenltd clobber each other with a heavy ear of corn . Thats right. Here they go. Announcer its sunday morning on cbs, and here again is charles osgood. Charles tom hanks is winning praise for his portrayal of captain phillips. They were seized by somali pirates off the coast of africa. We have the story of the rescue that was inspired. Tonight, pirates raid an american cargo ship off the coast of somalia and take the captain. An American Ship captain held by gunpoint by four somali pirates inside that life boat. The u. S. Navy was on the scene, where Richard Phillips did not see how they could possibly rescue him. I did not foresee a good ending, because i saw the determination that the pirates had. They werent going to give me up. I was hoping for a rescue, but i thought slim to none it would be successful. You had a plan to take my ship. That didnt work out, so you take me . In the newni movie, captain phillips, tom hanks plays the title character. The navy is not going to let you win. They cant let you win. The director sees him as the quintessential every man. ni extraordinary man in an extraordinary situation, kidnapped on the high seas. Whats he going to do in a confined space with four men who were intent on taking him. Thanks hanks is up against a pirate captain played by an american with no real acting experience. Its the haves of the Global Economy versus the have nots. Kidnapping people. The film is tom hanks, face to face with a captain from another world. And that trial of strength is really what the film is about. When you describeed it that way, it makes you see how much you had rideoth pirates. Luckily, he was good. He was born in somalia, but liveed in minneapolis since he was 14. He and three buddies answered a casting call, and nearly ended up stealing the show from a two time oscar winner. He didnt let us see him, and in the first scene i manageed to see tom, the first time i see him is in the movie. What made it more real iftdic . Yes. Coming through that door, and i just had the energy. And the next thing we know, some very scary guys were pointing guns in our faces, screaming at us. He was in it for real. It was a pretty terrifying and exciting moment. Relax. Nobody get hurt. I found them so convincing that i my lower lip began to tremble a little bit, and the hair was standing on the back of my neck. Captain you cannot believe your ieps that someone is that skinny, and that scary and that fast and has that much malevolence and seriousness in their eyes. Look at me. Sure. Look at me. Im the captain now. Thats something that i had in mind. It was adlibbed . It was. It was. And i remember seeing toms first impression. I could see i have a worthy antagonist here. You have a real pirate here. Yeah. A realoct are. Ni. Both the movie and the real thing, captain phillips and his crew prevented the pirealtys from taking over the ship. Instead, they took 30,000 from the ships safe and headed to somalia in a life boat. Phillips considered that something of a victory. Most of my problems were solved once i got in the life boat. My crew was free and clear, the ship and cargo were free and clear. All i had to do was worry about myself, one person. Even though warships were shadowing them, phillips was at the mercy of trigger happy pirates. You see it change from a hostage standoff to one of us isnt getting out of here alive. That actually happened. They would tell me i would die in saulia, and they would die in the United States. How close did you come to dying . Close enough at the whole time. At any point, a slipped finger or maybe instead of pulling and firing on an empty chamber, maybe it was full. The young pirate loved just having that rifle there and pulling the trigger and smiling at me. Were you afraid . I was afraid the whole time, yeah. But then you take that extreme measure of trying to escape. This is the escape depicted in the movie which compresses five days into two hours and stays remarkably faithful to the fact. Did your treatment change when they got you back in the boat. They tied me up very tight. I still have numbness and scars today. The leader was upset, and three men. He was screaming at them, and flailing me. Phillips and the pirates didnt know it, but navy seals had parachuted into the ocean and had the life boat in sight. When the shooting started, i got sprayed with debris in my face, and dove down into my seat. Phillips had been rescued. What happened next is probably the most powerful seen in the movie. The studio wont let us show t but it features another unlikely star, Navy Hospital was it intimidating . Very. Being with a world famous movie star . Very intimidating. She didnt know she was making a movie that day. She had auditioned for a bit part. I wasnt going to let anybody else be the doc on this ship. And suddenly ended up opposite one of the biggest movie stars in america. The scene was shot right here in the navy destroyer. I didnt know what to do. It was horrible. And i was broke out in hives. It was bad. What did it take to get you over stage fright . I was freaking out and intimidated. I didnt know what i was doing. Tom was sitting here, and i was there, and he got off the boat and said doc, do you need medical attention . We stopped and just said, thats all right. You didnt do anything wrong. We all have to stop. We just went back and did it again. And we did it again, and i did it exactly. And it ended up being an extraordinary thing, because movies are fake things, but that was a real scene that we shot. The most realistic depiction of all belongs to barca abi. The pirate captain who set out to hijack an unarmed container ship and ended up taking on the u. S. Navy. He really did it. In his eyes you really saw in his acting that he was very close to the real thing. Look at me. Sure. Look at me. Remember that this winter when the oscar for best supporting actor is handed out.
