In the newni movie, captain phillips, tom hanks plays the title character. The navy is not going to let you win. They cant let you win. The director sees him as the quintessential every man. ni extraordinary man in an extraordinary situation, kidnapped on the high seas. Whats he going to do in a confined space with four men who were intent on taking him. Thanks hanks is up against a pirate captain played by an american with no real acting experience. It was a pretty terrifying and exciting moment. Relax. Nobody get hurt. I found them so convincing that i my lower lip began to tremble a little bit, and the hair was standing on the back of my neck. Captain you cannot believe your ieps that someone is that skinny, and that scary and that fast and has that much malevolence and seriousness in their eyes. Look at me. Sure. Look at me. Im the captain now. Thats something that i had in mind. It was adlibbed . It was. It was. And i remember seeing toms first impression. I could see i have a worthy antagonist here. You have a real pirate here. Yeah. A realoct are. Ni. Both the movie and the real thing, captain phillips and his crew prevented the pirealtys from taking over the ship. Instead, they took 30,000 from the ships safe and headed to somalia in a life boat. Phillips considered that something of a victory. Most of my problems were solved once i got in the life boat. My crew was free and clear, the ship and cargo were free and clear. All i had to do was worry about myself, one person. Even though warships were shadowing them, phillips was at the mercy of trigger happy pirates. You see it change from a hostage standoff to one of us isnt getting out of here alive. That actually happened. They would tell me i would die in saulia, and they would die in the United States. How close did you come to dying . Close enough at the whole time. At any point, a slipped finger or maybe instead of pulling and firing on an empty chamber, maybe it was full. The young pirate loved just having that rifle there and pulling the trigger and smiling at me. Were you afraid . I was afraid the whole time, yeah. But then you take that extreme measure of trying to escape. This is the escape depicted in the movie which compresses five days into two hours and stays remarkably faithful to the fact. Did your treatment change when they got you back in the boat. They tied me up very tight. I still have numbness and scars today. The leader was upset, and three men. He was screaming at them, and flailing me. Phillips and the pirates didnt know it, but navy seals had parachuted into the ocean and had the life boat in sight. When the shooting started, i got sprayed with debris in my face, and dove down into my seat. Phillips had been rescued. What happened next is probably the most powerful seen in the movie. The studio wont let us show t but it features another unlikely star, Navy Hospital was it intimidating . Very. Being with a world famous movie star . Very intimidating. She didnt know she was making a movie that day. She had auditioned for a bit part. I wasnt going to let anybody else be the doc on this ship. And suddenly ended up opposite one of the biggest movie stars in america. The scene was shot right here in the navy destroyer. I didnt know what to do. It was horrible. And i was broke out in hives. It was bad. What did it take to get you over stage fright . I was freaking out and intimidated. I didnt know what i was doing. Tom was sitting here, and i was there, and he got off the boat and said doc, do you need medical attention . We stopped and just said, thats all right. You didnt do anything wrong. We all have to stop. We just went back and did it again. And we did it again, and i did it exactly. And it ended up being an extraordinary thing, because movies are fake things, but that was a real scene that we shot. The most realistic depiction of all belongs to barca abi. This group came on stage, big brother and the Holding Company, and this woman, this white soul singer was so riveting. Ime seeing this, and im saying, oh, god, this is a musical revolution. Take another piece of my heart, baby. Davis signed big brother. Their first album for columbia, cheap thrills, which shoots to number one the next year. And gives janice her first hit. Piece of my heart. You know you got it and it makes you feel good. But job lin had developed a weakness for Southern Comfort and heroin. Just two years later, while recording pearl, the solo album that would include me and bobby mcgee, she was found dead of an accidental heroin overdose. She was just 27. How did you find out when she died . Telephone. My father called. I was asleep in bed, and brad is at school sk. He said simply, janice died. When i came home for christmas break, we didnt talk about it. There was just this heavy, heavy silence. The joplins say that sil ention lingered for years before the family finally started talking through janices death. And where did you get to in the end . Well, we got to broadway. We have to.
