2014. Good morning. Good to be with you. Im annemarie green. Weve learned this morning that the soldier accused of opening fire at ft. Hood, texas, last night, was being treated for mental illness. The soldier arrived at ft. Hood in february. He allegedly shot and killed three people and wounded 16 others before taking his own life. All the victims were members of the military. The shooting does not appear to be related to terrorism. Officials say he was confronted in the parking lot by military police. A basewide lockdown has been lifted and the base commander says his troops and their families will move forward. We know the soldiers and the civilians and the families of this fort who served so bravely in combat for the last 13 years in both iraq and afghanistan are strong, and we will get through this. Officials described the female m. P. Who confronted the gunman as a hero. This morning they are trying to find out what triggered the attack. Omar villafranca has our report. Reporter ft. Hood was on lockdown after gunfire rang out wednesday afternoon. Army Officials Say the gunman was using a semiautomatic weapon that was not registered on post. Officials at ft. Hood say it was one of their own who opened fire on fellow soldiers wednesday afternoon, killing three and injuring more than a dozen before turning his gun on himself. Its believed that he walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fierks got into a vehicle, fired from a vehicle, got out of the vehicle, walked into another building, and opening fire again. Reporter the gunman was described as a married iraq war veteran. He was before considering for posttraumatic stress disorder and was taking medication. We do know that the soldier had Behavioral Health and Mental Health issues and was being treated for that. Reporter emergency crews responded to the scene and the injured were taken to area hospitals. Theyve had a variety of injuries weve been treating ranging from gunshot wounds that involved extremities abdomen, stock match, neck, and chest. Reporter they were taken to local hospitals. Were heartbroken that Something Like this happened again. Reporter in 200913 people were kill ed and more than 30 hurt after Army Psychiatrist nadal hasan opened fire. He was convicted and sentenced to death after that shooting. Base Officials Say they have no indication of any link to terrorism in the latest shooting. Sources told cbs news that the shooter had been identified as 34yearold soldier ivan lopez. At this point we dont know a motive for the shooting. Now, security at the base had been tightened after the 2009 rampage, but defense secretary chuck hagel said its obvious something is not working. At ft. Hood, omar villafranca, cbs news. Well, for a second day in a row, a powerful earthquake struck chiles northern coast. The 7. 6 magnitude earthquake hit Late Wednesday in the same area where tuesdays 8. 2 magnitude struck, killing six people. So far there are no reports of serious damage or injury. Chiles president who was in the area to inspect damage from tuesdays quake was evacuated. A precautionary tsunami alert has been lifted. A Delta Air Lines jet ended up in the grass after making an Emergency Landing at new yorks kennedy airport. Delta flight 886 was traveling from atlanta to new Yorks Laguardia airport when it encountered problems with its hydraulic system. There were 221 people on board. The twin engine jet was diverted to the longer runways at kennedy and was sulanded successfully, it was taxiing, rolled onto the grassy area. No one was injured and the passengers were bussed to the terminal. Lawmakers questioning gms Ceo Mary Barra pulled no punches during her second day of testimony on capitol hill. Prosecutors accused gm of a possible criminal coverup of its defective switches and as jeff glor reports, they were astounded that no one connected with the recall has not been fired. Barra had few answers. I dont have the complete facts to share with you today. I became aware of the defect and real of january 31st. Reporter when the key is inserted into the ignition, the problem was in the back of the ignition switch assembly. This part called the detent plunger was too short and didnt fit snuggly into the splot. It could turn the switch turning the kaur after and the safety procedures. The replacement plunger is 15 longer than the defective one, fitting snuggly into position and holding the key in place. Senator ed markey. We now know the difference between this switch and one that would have worked was the difference between life and death. Reporter we also now know at least 17 employees, including digiorgio and executives like lori queen were very aware of inadvertent ignition offs in 2005. No recall came until nine years later. Barra claimed ignorance, blaming the old gm. You dont know anything about anything. Reporter senator barbara boxer. You have been involved in this since you became ceo. Have you not looked into this . Reporter barra who said an internal investigation would take up to 60 days was also asked repeatedly if gm deceived the government in 2009 by taking a bailout without revealing ignition problems. Can you tell us weather General Motors intentionally mislead its customers and federal regulators when someone decided not to fix the faulty ignition switch . I dont know. Reporter the cars are safe as long as a driver uses the key only, but on friday the federal judge will hear a request that all of the recalled vehicles will be parked immediately. A potent storm system packing damaging winds, hail, and possibly tornados is pushing through kansas, arkansas, tennessee, and illinois. By friday the threat of tornadoes increases in the Lower Mississippi valley. Last night powerful winds and golf ballsized hail ripped through southern kansas. Today a funeral will be held for Michael Kennedy, a boston firefighter killed in the line of duty last week. On wednesday family and friends paid tribute to the other firefighter killed. Reporter 10,000 firefighters from across the country and some from as far away as australia stood at attention as a fire truck carried the remains of lieutenant edward walsh. The 43yearold died in this windfed fire that trapped him and firefighter Michael Kennedy in the basement of this brownstone. Lieutenant walshs brother cared his helmet. That is his nephew saluting his casket. Walshs sister kathy malone. He lived more in 43 years than many of us will do in 80. He was destined to do great things, and he did. Reporter but one of the most moving tributes happened out of public viewing. It began with a request from walshs widow, kristin. Boston fire investigator patricia donovan. She didnt ask for much but one thing she did ask for is for us to try to find his wedding ring. Reporter at first they searched the fire house and it was not there. They realized it had to be in the basement where walsh died. Donovan and five others sifted through ash and soot on their hands and knees, looking for the ring. I saw something round with the sifter i had. I picked it up, cleaned it off a little, and i said, oh, my god, this is it. Reporter it was a brief moment of comfort after days of pain. When you saw her put the ring on her finger yeah. It was you got a big lump in your throat and we all gave her a hug. Reporter walsh had three children, all under the age of 10.
