Members tells us of his pain. A 60 minutes exclusive. She was known as emily doe, the anonymous woman sexually assaulted by a stanford swimmer. Now shes putting her own voice, name, and face to her powerful words. Drama turned to farce in britain, political theater as the Prime Minister and parliament battle over brexit. Order odonnell and a special note on the men and women bringing relief to the bahamas. This is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell reporting tonight from opa locka, florida. Odonnell good evening. This is our western edition. We are at the u. S. Coast guard air station miami. This is the closest to the bahamas, and it is the staging point for a massive searchand rescue operation. We have also just learned that the official death toll has risen to 20 but it is expected to rise even further. And today we flew with the guard over the islands hit hardest by dorian. We saw home after home torn apart by one of the most powerful atlantic storms on record. In fact, the u. N. Says tonight 70,000 people are in immediate need of aid. We also spoke with survivors who are telling some harrowing stories. Tonight, dorian is lashing the coastline of florida and georgia. Were talking top winds that have increased to 110 miles an hour. Its center will approach South Carolina tonight, North Carolina tomorrow night, all with hurricaneforce winds. And South Carolinas governor has now ordered the entire coast evacuated. Were talking about 800,000 people in all. Storm surges could reach eight feet in some places. Warnings now extend northward to hampton roads, virginia. And we have a team of correspondents from the bahamas to the georgia and carolina coast. Wt were going to begin with what we saw in the hurricane zone in the bahamas. Co traveled with coast guard lieutenants Jillian Harner and julianna white, aboard an hc144 cargo plane to see the devastation firsthand. W was quickly obvious, these fragile islands were no match for dorians category 5 fury. The landscape resembled a bomb site. This is the first book at bar harbor in the abaco island, flat, completely wiped out. You can see all the beach erosion, too. See the change in the color of the water . Thats how much of the beach was washed out. This is where dorian unleashed most of its wrath and rendered this place unrecognizable. Nes one of the saddest things. This is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and, yet, natures fury has. Has decimated it. Its people desperate. Not only was the u. S. Coast guard in rescue mode, but customs and Border Patrol is also now helping out. We managed to get up on a dryer turned sideways, and we managed to stand on there. Eris is my wife over here. Reporter at the chaotic staging area for rescueand relief operations in nassau, we met robert and phyllis cornea, who have lived in abaco for more than 50 years. Theyve been homeless since sunday. All the main buildings, gone. Odonnell its gone. Its gone. Everything is gone. Only concrete structures. Odonnell how did you get rescued . The good lord. Hats all i can tell you. Odonnell the good lord. Take a picture of me because its all i have left, what you see me in. Odonnell thats all you ave left. Ive been in this four days. Odonnell the corneas lost lleir home. Right now i feel torn apart. Odonnell Adrian Farrington nost his son. On i still can see my son getting dragged across the roof reaching up. Reporter farrington told my blleague Nikki Battiste he thought he had lifted his five yearold son to safety on the moof of his house, only to see him washed away in the surging floodwaters. If he be rescued, i praisee. But for the search, what i saw, where i lose him, anything could happen. You had sharks swimming in the water. Anything could happen. Odonnell we also met coast guard lieutenant randall rinesen, who rescued a woman on grand bahama, who said her family is missing, too. Have you ever seen anything like that out there before . Not this type of destruction, ont we fly over the islands a lot, and this is definitely the worst ive seen them. T odonnell many of the pilots we spoke to tell us when the waters recede, the conditions will only get worse. And were going to hear more from those two lieutenants who flew us over the bahamas later in this broadcast. Our David Begnaud was able to get into treasure cay on abaco island. It was absolutely decimated by dorian, and david was able to speak with some of the storms survivors. Reporter thats the airplane which brought us here to treasure cay. As soon as we got out, they loaded up people who have medical needs to take them to the marsh harbor area, where a medical hospital of sorts has been set up. A short time ago this air ambulance from Fort Lauderdale landed ready to pick up people. And the few dozen people here at the customs and Immigration Office have concerns like theyre running low on medication, and they would like to get out of here. Everyone who is being prioritized are those who have medical needs. But other people, like this lady, are ready to go. She is nancy albert. She waited all day for a flight out of here. It didnt happen. This is what happened to her home in the community manowar. We opened the door to the bathroom, there was nothing left. It was gone. The house was gone. Reporter we also met shavon williams. She looked shellshocked. What we did, we went in the bathroom, and we put some mattress over us and just started praying. Reporter her husband died just days before the hurricane. Shes running low on medication to treat her epilepsy. Because of her needs, a stranger gave her a seat on a flight to nassau. As we get ready for sunset tonight, the people are left sitting and waiting, and then hoping that they, too, might get a seat on the next plane out of town. Norah. Odonnell all right, david, thank you. And tonight, parts of georgia are being hit by Tropical Storm conditions. Mola lenghi is on the georgia coast. Mola, how bad is it right now . Reporter well, norah, were on the beach on tybee island, here about 20 miles east of savannah, where you can feel the wind and the rain increasing hour after hour. And, of course, with stronger etnds, you get much more aggressive waves out there in the atlantic. Anw, as you can see right now,ts low tide, but the real concerns, the Major Concerns moving forward over the next few hours are going to be the storm surge and the potential for flooding, especially during high tide in the overnight hours. Now, about half of the roughly 3,000 people who live here on tybee island, decided to stay and ride out the storm, despite state officials urging them to evacuate. Now, conditions are expected to get worse here over the next 12 hours or so, especially in the lowlying coastal areas of the state. About 1300 National Guardsmen have been deployed, norah to help in dorians aftermath here. N odonnell all right, mola, thank you. Ke want to check in now with jamie yuccas. She is up the coast in charleston. That of course, South Carolinas low country. Limie, i understand the authorities are worried about that eightfoot storm surge that could inundate parts of the city. Reporter absolutely, norah. This is what were talking about as the issue here, these low aing areas. They quickly fill with water. Theyre a concern for homeowners. Now check out this video just shot a short time ago on foley beach. You can see the winds just whipping there. If you combine those conditions with the 515 inches of rain expected to be dumped in this nrea during dorian, along with the high tide, the mayor calls that a triple threat, and it opuld mean catastrophic flooding that hasnt been seen here in more than 30 years. Norah. Odonnell jamie, thank you. Lets turn now to meteorologist megan glaros of wbbm. Thats our chicago station, our ivs station there. So, megan, give us a sense. Where is dorian now, and more ndportantly, where is it headed . Right, and that is the question right now because we know landfall is at its greatest possibility in the next 2448 hours, and that will be somewhere likely in the carolinas. Its a stronger storm now than it was just a few hours ago. Still a category 2, but winds we up to 110 miles per hour, pready starting to lash parts of georgia and South Carolina, with tropicalstormforce conditions. Moving northnorthwest now at eight miles per hour. So what happens . Msically its going on the outside of the ridge of High Pressure thats been steering it, and eventually a turn into the south or North Carolina coastline. That would happen any time moving into early tomorrow morning. And then its gone by friday afternoon. At that point, no more concerns. Its out to sea. But we are still talking about the potential for storm surge. Ah you can see, norah, anywhere along the area from brunswick to savannah to charleston. Twofour, foursix cant even rule out eightfoot storm surge on spots. Norah. Odonnell good information from tonights track. Megan, thank you. And you can get updates on Hurricane Dorian around the clock by using our cbs news app. You can also find our streaming service, cbsn, at cbsnews. Com. We want to turn now to southern california. Many were burned beyond recognition. And tonight, loved ones are sharing stories of unspeakable loss with meg oliver. At a Northern California salon, 52yearold lisa fiedlers griefstricken coworkers closed their shop this morning. Raymond chan inspired High School Students in his a. P. Physics classes in freemont, and died with his 26yearold daughter kendra. Daniel garcia worked at apple as an engineer in cupertino. Balloons outside his santa cruz homes commemorated him, as well as his wife and their daughter. In stockton there were white ribbons in dominic selgas neighborhood. If there was one thing you could say to your mom, what would it be . If there was one thing i could say to my mom, i love you, and. Thats it. I love you, miss you. Reporter cbs news has learned that investigators interviewed the crew today and met with family members of the victims. As for dominics family, this dive trip was an annual adventure to celebrate his stepfathers birthday. Norah, Michael Quitasol would have turned 61 years old today. Odonnell these stories are so tough, meg, thank you. Now were going to turn to Great Britain overseas which has been mesmerized over the debate over brexit. Everyone knew that breaking up ulth europe would be hard to do, but Elizabeth Palmer reports etnight the battle has taken a few strange turns. He Reporter Parliament in the drlds oldest democracy saw a pitched battle this week between britains Prime Minister and his own lawmakers. Ooda lot of good stuff, boris. Reporter Boris Johnson has bwed to take britain out of the European Union by halloween, with or without a trade agreement. But many members of parliament sre, frankly, terrified of this socalled nodeal brexit; afraid it would cause chaos and even food shortages, they fbelled, and today tied the Prime Ministers hands with a eaw that takes nodeal option off the table. Johnson retaliated, and expelled from his own party all the m. P. S who had crossed him, including cnston churchills own grandson, nicholas soames. This is the most divisive msue of my lifetime. Reporter so whats next . In my view and the view of this government, there must now be an election on tuesday the 15th of october. Reporter now, the atmosphere here is so poisonous that it looks tonight as if parliament oi noing to try to stop the Prime Minister from having an election, which has caused anger and frustration, as you can imagine, norah. Ort if anything, even more confusion. Odonnell as the world turns over there. Izizabeth, thank you. And there is still much more ahead right here on the cbs evening news.
