there are no hot spots. and that everything is in fact all clear but it is going to be a long day of clean-up for firefighters and these business owners after that massive fire tore through about 10 businesses. >> a master by called about 1:05 this morning and crews were it spread really quickly. firefighters tried to keep their work going and thatic came crashing down. i spoke with a couple of business owners standing by and they say it wasn't already tough economic times, this makes it worse. >> when i came here, i saw the fire at the corner and then spread from this side up to that side. >> as a precaution, firefighters evacuated a nearby apartment complex. but we hear that they are all back home right now. we heard earlier also one firefighter was injured. he suffered major cuts to the back of his hand and has been treated at a local hospital. again, live back here on scene, you can see that they are on top of that ladder hosing down a corner of that apartment complex. that's where they say the fire originally started and again, as far as the cause, investigators are still here on scene. when i spoke to the deputy chief, he says it's too early to suspect anything suspicious but they will be here all morning. live in union city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. okay, cate. thank you. we have some live pictures from chopper 5. firefighters in richmond are on the scene. this is a pallet fire you see it burning there. investigators say it began early this morning on brookside drive near rum road. it's a commercial industrial area. firefighters expect to be there for hours still trying to determine the cause. you can see some of the video just in of the fire itself. the firefighters tell us a lightning strike may have sparked that fire sometime around 2 a.m. lawrence has been monitoring that actually. there's nothing on the radar that said there was some lightning in that area? >> no. we have lightning detection device so we rolled it back and looked about 2:00 when they said the fire started. we didn't see anything on there so we can't verify any lightning strikes but we have had other lightning strikes around the bay area especially at the coast and the peninsula and, of course, some raindrops to go along with that in the san jose area. just after 9:00 last night pretty good downpour. .09" of rain in the san jose area. some welcome rain in the fall season and we're not done just yet. could be an interesting day weather-wise as things stay unsettled with the area of low pressure off of the coast. you will see numerous strikes especially at the half moon bay area and pushes off the coast. more showers in the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. i think the focus will shift more to the south as we head in toward the afternoon. lightning strikes in the half moon bay area in the 10 minutes, possibility of more isolated thunderstorms. 40s and 50s by the afternoon. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. if you are commuting to work today over the bay bridge toll plaza expect busier delays than usual. there is an accident on the upper deck approaching treasure island. no injuries. so hopefully they will be able to clear it quickly. bridge crews are aware of it they are out there now. they turned on the metering lights and cycling through them slowly so that's why you see this early-morning backup. so typically, the metering lights are not turned on until before:15. so 10 to 15 -- before 6:15 so 10 to 15 minutes earlier than normal so expect pay bigger delay. on the maps, you are heading into san francisco. we're also watching this a water main break reported on diamond street right there between 18th and market. crews are on scene trying to fix the problem now. more traffic coming up. meantime back to you guys. the san francisco board of supervisors sides with ross mirkarimi giving him his job back. anne makovec joins us now and ann, there's been a lot of drama surrounding this. some of say it's a shocking decision. >> reporter: oh, yes. talk about a comeback fo ross mirkarimi. last night 7 of the 11 supervisors voted to permanently remove him from office. but 9 needed to vote for it to actually happen. so ross mirkarimi is coming back to work at city hall this morning. last night he appeared with his wife and son at his side at the hearing. in the end, supervisors kim, olague, campos and avalos voted for mirkarimi to keep his job going against the ethics commission recommendation. this is of course after mirkarimi's false imprisonment conviction for bruising his wife's arm days before taking office in january. it is going to be an awkward day at city hall and for the mayor's month long push to get mirkarimi out. >> i look forward after something that has profoundly affected our relationship and i think our relationship as it intersects with the people of san francisco that we have work to do. we need to rise above politics and get the job done. >> reporter: his wife spoke yesterday as well continuing to support her husband. >> finally, i think that justice was done. and i have a message for mayor lee. you have to be a bigger mayor because we have our sheriff back finally. >> reporter: now, the mayor sent out this statement last night saying, quote, the board's decision returns a convicted domestic batterer to lead the sheriff's office and i am concerned about our city's nationally recognized domestic violence program. i will do everything in my power to ensure that abusers continue to be held accountable. now, mirkarimi says he is going to be talking with a high level officials with the sheriff's office this morning to talk about how best to transition back into his job to. his attorney says he is going to get back pay for the time he was out of office which was this entire year. live outside san francisco city hall, anne makovec, cbs 5. >> thank you. three people are recovering in the hospital this morning after a hit-and-run crash near an antioch school. a crossing guard her young son and another woman were injured outside turner elementary school yesterday morning. the drives was speeding and trying to pass cars lined up to drop children off at the school, according to witnesses. the suv ran through an intersection, plowed into the pedestrians and crashed into another car and then the driver and passenger got out and ran away. >> all of a sudden a car caught on fire and the policeman ran over there with fire extinguishers to put it out. >> a man later returned and says he was the driver and admitted he was drinking. he was arrested on the spot. police are still searching for that other person. a 17-year-old girl stabbed in the mission district has life-threatening injuries after being stabbed multiple times near 21st and valencia about 7:00 last night. shortly before that, several people were involved in a fight in the same area. the gang task force is trying to determine if the fight and the stabbing were related. other bay area headlines, a san francisco man is expected to enter a plea in court this afternoon. bradley mrozek is suspected of abduct and assaulting a 9-year- especially for this time of the morning. they are out there now working to clear it. we're not really sure about the extent of injuries. at this point, they appear to be minor. so that is the good news. hopefully they will be able to clear it earlier than otherwise. they also had to turn on the metering lights earlier than typical. good 10 to 15 minutes earlier than we usually see for this time of the morning. so that's why we see those bigger-than-usual backups. you may want to consider the san mateo bridge. live look at the san mateo bridge where this is moving just fine. the right side of your screen that's the commute direction. westbound 92. so heading out of hayward towards the peninsula, that's actually a pretty nice ride. and we are going to try to show you a look at the incline but i think our cameras -- we're trying to get that to work. towards the south bay, northbound 101 approaching oakland road we were watching this accident it is now on the right-hand shoulder. brake lights beyond 280 your drive times showing speeds 21 miles an hour. another accident approaching los gatos northbound highway 17 right by highway 85. road may be slick. drive time 15 minutes in the northbound lanes of 101. because of that accident. 280 and the guadalupe parkway no problems. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." let's go to lawrence for the weather. >> lightning strikes around the bay area still more scattered showers if you are heading out the door. lightning strikes in half moon bay. we are seeing another cell rotating back towards the coastline and back into the half moon bay area. brief heavy downpours and the possibility of thunderstorms erupting there, as well. so we'll see the circulation in this low still off the coastline. showers rotating back off the coastline that will be rotating back toward the bay area so staying unsettled throughout the day today but i think the focus and the shift of the storms is going to head further to the south throughout the day. partly cloudy if you are heading outside the possibility of isolated showers and possible thunderstorms. sun and clouds through the bay area today. temperature not too bad fairly mild but then looks like we are going to stay unsettled with the focus of this afternoon seeing the storms down to the south into the san jose, santa cruz mountains with the afternoon heating we could early this morning at a strip mall in union city. and cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us and cate, a guess a lot of businesses affected by this fire, right? >> reporter: at least 9 or 10. it's a rough day. some of them are still waiting for fire crews to finish up. you can see they are still battling some hot spots in the corner of this shopping center right here. needless to say, it's going to be a long day of clean-up for firefighters and business owners after that massive blaze ripped through this shopping center just hours ago. we have video of it. you can see just how big these flames were. alameda county fire department says a passerby called them at around 1:05 a.m. and crews were immediately dispatched. they say it started in the corner of this strip mall here and they tried their best to kept it from spreading but the flames got to the roof and the attic space and then that collapsed making it difficult for crews to fight. now, we spoke with a couple of business owners here who says it is a rough day for them. they say if it wasn't already tough economic times, this makes it far worse. >> emotional, we don't know what's going on. the fire was spreading pretty quickly. >> it's very bad. it's everything you got, no? you know, especially business now slow and then it's happened like this one, i think very bad day. >> reporter: now, that business owner was one of the owners of a shop where the fire started. his grocery store completely gone. now, as a precaution, firefighters told us they evacuated a nearby apartment complex but all of those residents are back home now. we do know that one firefighter was injured. he suffered major cuts to the back of his hand but has been treated at a local hospital. live here on scene, crews still trying to hose down those hot spots. as far as the cause at this point, firefighters tell me it is still under investigation. investigators here are on scene. they say it's too early to tell if there is anything cruz mountains, scotts valley toward ben lomond and boulder creek. you will see stormy weather and embedded thunderstorms with the system as it moves through. out over the bay broken clouds out there right now. temperatures not too bad in the 40s and 50s. i think this afternoon, we'll see these numbers running:again into the mid-70s in the valleys with some partly cloudy skies. the rain line is going to shift further to the south. the santa cruz mountains and also the san jose area watch out this afternoon, you could see some thunderstorms rumbling on through. all right. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. and we're following this breaking news here coming into our traffic department. we get a good bird's-eye view from chopper 5 of this accident on the upper deck of the bay bridge. so you're looking live at the incline section, where it looks like it's the far left lane that's blocked. only one lane blocked right now. unfortunately, it is causing some pretty major delays getting into san francisco from the east bay. so the accident was reported about a half hour ago involving a motorcycle. couple of other cars. and this is what it's doing behind the pay gates. they turned the metering lights on probably about 15 minutes earlier than typical so it is already jammed solid through the macarthur maze and growing, at least 25 minutes just to get you on the bridge. and then you the incline, it is a really tight squeeze. until you get past treasure island, until you get past that accident scene, then things finally improve. this accident is likely going to have a ripple effect throughout the morning. when things like this happen, it takes a long time to recover. we'll have more traffic coming up. we're also seeing delays in the south bay. in the meantime, back to you guys. sheriff ross mirkarimi is ready to go back to work. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning. it is probably going to be an awkward morning here at city hall in san francisco today. the board of supervisors fell two votes short of permanently removing ross mirkarimi from office. some of the supervisors say it was too convoluted of an issue legally speaking so ross mirkarimi returns to office here this morning. >> i want to mend fences with all parties. i look forward to demonstrating why the people elected me as sheriff and look forward for me and my family to now move in a place where we hopefully will achieve some normalcy. >> reporter: so board of supervisors meeting lasted about 9 hours yesterday and in the end, supervisors kim, olague, campos and avalos voted in favor of mirkarimi keeping his job despite pleading guilty to false imprisonment for bruises his wife's arm during an argument days before he was sworn in, in january. the ethics commission did recommend he be removed from office permanently that during a long public comment period. we heard from both sides. >> we put him in office. and if we want him out, we'll take him out. >> you really need to ask yourself why mayor lee has come and taken our vote away. thank you. >> reporter: now, mayor lee sent out this statement yesterday: he of course did want mirkarimi removed from office. he said "domestic violence has no place in our city will never be considered a private family matter and will never be top rated. we will move forward from these official misconduct proceedings recommitting ourselves to standing up for women and families." so sheriff mirkarimi says he is going to be meeting with some top level officials in the department today to kind of calmed down a little bit but early on today it was going good. you can see some strong cells now making their way through the santa cruz mountains. watch out. you're going to see some brief downpours with these and maybe even some lightning strikes. low pressure off the coast will keep things unsettled for the better part of today a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures surprisingly mild. then the rain is going to shift further to the south into san jose and the santa cruz mountains this afternoon. i think with some afternoon heating, could see some more pop coming up expected high in san jose. 69 in san mateo. 70 hayward. east bay numbers even the mid- 70s by the afternoon. and inside the bay a little cooler but not bad. 69 in oakland. about 66 in san francisco. and 62 in daly city. unsettled the possibility of thunderstorms today. maybe a leftover shower or two tomorrow morning but not much. then we dry things out. looks like the weekend should be very nice to get out and enjoy some of the temperatures moving up into the low 80s over the weekend too. elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. if you are just waking up with us there's been a crash on the upper deck of the bay bridge. very big delays getting into san francisco from the east bay. they cleared it out every lanes and everything is moving better across the upper deck. but it is still very slow especially behind the pay gates. it is jammed solid into the macarthur maze already this morning. they turned on the metering lights a little early. minor injuries with that crash. it was involving a motorcycle and blocking lanes for a good half hour or so. so yeah, unfortunately the damage has been done. if you are heading towards the bay bridge. you may want to consider the san mateo bridge as an alternate. this is not too bad actually westbound 92 looking good only about a 15-minute drive time right now out of hayward toward foster city. bart is another good option if you want to avoid the big delays behind the pay gates. all trains including those heading to downtown san francisco are on time. elsewhere let's go to the rest of our maps show you some of our live drive time sensors. northbound 101 approaching oakland road is still really backed up. we had an accident there. it was quickly cleared to the right-hand shoulder. but it is still really slow and you can see that drive we got off to a decent start with aluminum maker alcoa and kfc and taco bell and costco all topping expectations. but a couple of bay area companies don't expect to have such good things to say. san ramon-based chevron says its earnings will be significantly lower than expected thanks to unfavorable foreign currency exchange rates as well as operations in refining and marking that didn't meet its expectations. now, chevron will still turn a big profit making $7.2 billion in the 2nd quarter. and analysts were expecting profit of around $6.2 billion in the 3rd quarter but looks like it will fall shy of that. san jose-based solid state drive maker is getting hammered after it said its earnings will be materially lower than what it was expecting thanks to problem in its customer incentive practice. the company also naming a new ceo today in the process. its stock is getting hit hard, as well. market overall heading lower and chevron is weighing on the dow since it is a dow component. chevron's shares are down by 2.5%. dow losing 31 points. nasdaq higher by a couple of points. s&p down by one. shares in ocz diving by 33%. back to you guys. >> thank you. jason brooks with kcbs and check on a developing story out of union city. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran has more on the nearly dozen businesses damaged at a strip mall fire there. good morning, cate. >> reporter: good morning, michelle. firefighters just told us they used at least 60,000 gallons of water to take out this fire here. investigators are waiting for morning light to assess the damage. alameda county fire department says a passerby had called in the fire just after 1:00 this morning. by the time crews got on scene, the deputy chief says the fire got a head start and spread to the roof. it collapsed, creating a major challenge for firefighters. the fire spread to nine or ten other businesses. some of them completely damaged. as a precaution, firefighters evacuated a nearby apartment complex. but all of those residents are back at home this morning. one firefighter was injured. he had major cuts to the back of his hand. but he was treated and is expected to be okay. so far they don't have a cause at this point. but fire investigators say they will be here at least until 10:00 this morning assessing the damage. live in union city, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. richmond firefighters could be on the scene of a pellet fire much of this morning. the fire has been burning for a few hours on brookside drive near rum mill road. investigators have not determined a cause but there were reports of lightning strikes in the area about the time of the fire. ross mirkarimi plans to show up for work today as the sheriff of san francisco. the board of supervisors voted 7-4 to remove him from office last night. but that was short of the 9 votes needed to oust him. mouse of the people who spoke at the hearing -- most of the people who spoke at the hearing supported the sheriff. mayor lee said he disagree with the four supervisors who supported mirkarimi. so might be an awkward day at city hall. >> sounds like it. 6:58. let's check traffic and weather. >> absolutely. >> this has through going to stay unsettled throughout the day, partly cloudy in the afternoon, still mid-70s inland. it looks like the rain line is going to shift further south today so san jose and the santa cruz mountains more of the focus this afternoon with a possibility of more thunderstorms. elizabeth? >> okay. ick. that's the best way to describe it, ew, it's a bad commute right now heading into san francisco at the bay bridge. really cycling through these metering lights slowly and it's all because of an early-morning accident on the upper deck. it was involving a motorcycle, a couple of other cars. it's now out of there. it's cleared out of lanes. unfortunately, the damage has been done. it is a really hefty commute right now behind those pay gates jammed solid through the macarthur maze. and also backing up on to interstate 80 and 580, as well. so consider the san mateo bridge. bart all trains are on time. a quick note about muni. outbound delays at the embarcadero station some sort
