was an individual inside if that individual was armed. but we have as i mentioned just gotten confirmation from chp that there in fact wasn't an individual in the vehicle, that van has now been pulled to the right shoulder of 880 and there has been a search going on in this area near the oracle arena where the crash happened. no details about the suspect at this time, so still a manhunt going on. but for those who are driving on the 880 freeway, lanes now reopened. let's go to elizabeth and get details about any backups that may be still happening. >> there are still backups in the area. we can really see the southbound traffic has reopened and i guess that chp confirmed with kristy that they are in the process now of re-opening those northbound lanes because that's where the police standoff was in the northbound lanes so public safety precaution, they did go ahead and shut the southbound lanes, as well. you can see headlights, that's southbound traffic which has definitely re-opened here within the last couple of minutes. northbound traffic really low in the area backed up to at least davis street towards san leandro at last check and you can see our sensors are picking up a lot of slow speeds so we have been encouraging folks to use five as alternate or bart. 880, this causes confusion for drivers when a major artery like this is shut down. this affects freeway traffic all over the bay area. big rigs are allowed to use 580 at last check. within the last five minutes they re-opened southbound 580 and are in the process of beginning to reopen northbound 880, as well. the bay bridge, traffic looks okay. so far no metering lights and again you are free and clear in the fastrak lanes. slight delays in cash lanes but for a while we had lighter-than- normal traffic at the bay bridge because the commuters were having a hard time getting to the bay bridge from the nimitz. so again, continue to watching us for this developing story. along the nimitz, 880 beginning to reason past the coliseum. that is traffic, back to you. >> thank you. president obama waking up on this side of the country in downtown san jose this morning. in a few hours he is going [ opening bell ] >> there's the opening bell. here's hoping that this week is better. good morning, monday, september 26. i'm grace lee. it's now 6:30. and we begin with a little bit of traffic. both direction of interstate 880 shut down for just about two hours. they opened a short time ago. a crash involving a stolen car turned into a standoff with the highway patrol. kristy seifkin explains. >> reporter: they have just reopened the lanes of the 880 freeway but until a few minutes ago, both directions were shut down and that is all because of a high-speed chase that started in hayward around 3:30 this morning. chp spotted a brown van that they believed was a stolen vehicle. that individual fled on the freeway from hayward to oakland, bounced off both side of the guardrails and crashed into the median strip. that individual who they believed was inside the vehicle and they believed the individual was armed and dangerous. and i spoke with the chp officer a little bit earlier. this is what he had to say. >> driver failed to yield and traveled into the oakland area, collided into the center divided wall near 66th avenue on interstate 880, failed to comply to exit the vehicle. as a result, the freeway was shut down as a safety precaution north- and southbound because they didn't know if that party was armed and dangerous. >> reporter: now, chp did eventually confirm that there in fact was nobody inside the vehicle. but in the meantime, multiple s.w.a.t. teams out there with rifles pointed toward that empty van. now they are questioning, where is this person or multiple people who were -- they have done an initial search of the area here by oracle arena, haven't found anybody yet. not a lot of details released at this point about the suspect. so chp of course has said if anybody sees any suspicious individuals or activity to go ahead and report that. so while the freeway is reopened, the manhunt continues. even though the lanes are reopened, though, still significant backups out there on the road. let's go to elizabeth now with the check on the traffic. >> thank you, kristy. yeah, things are slowly getting back to normal. they were able to reopen the freeway northbound and southbound 880 right around 6:00 so just in time when the bulk of the commute really gets under way. now, this is live look right there as you pass the coliseum. for a while lanes were shut down for two hours or more. so it is still sluggish northbound 880, maybe just due to rubbernecking because again, chp and police are still on scene investigating this earlier crash. now, they are off to the shoulder so again not blocking lanes. but northbound is a little sluggish from hegenberger, southbound is moving fine. i mention aid mentioned a crash that was cleared to the right shoulder by the pay gates. fastrak users get by okay. significant backups in the cash lanes backed up to the west grand overcrossing. and out to santa clara we go now. we have a photographer showing you these live traffic conditions on the san tomas expressway where, as you can see, there is a big old tree right down there in the roadway. it is blocking both southbound lanes of san tomas past benton so emergency crews are out there now hoping to clear it soon. we understand northbound traffic is fine. back to you. >> thank you. president obama is in silicon valley today and in just a few hours will take part in a town hall meeting to be webcast by linkedin. stephanie chuang is in mountain view. reporter: all the activity is going to be across the street from here at the computer history museum. you can see right here mountain view police still here. they just had a shift change but they will be here all morning long for this. so the roads are blocked off. no parking all day. and then here of course coned off across the street in this plaza. so security tight, a lot of activity just picking up. this is all ahead of a town hall meeting on job creation. air force one touched down at moffett field yesterday early evening. local dignitaries were there to welcome president obama, who was also here for some private campaign fundraisers. >> on his way to one of the events at the woodside home of symantec chairman john thompson some people lined the road to protest. but there were much friendlier people greeting the president when he headed to a fundraiser at the atherton home of facebook coo sheryl vandenberg. lady sandberg. lady gaga paid $36,000 to attend the event to speak to president obama about bullying. republicans are also meeting at facebook for a town hall meeting at palo alto. today's linkedin event starts at 11:00 and people can see it live on linkedin and on the white house website. >> thank you. with some insight we have cbs 5 political analyst joe tuman joining thus morning. silicon valley is such a beacon of job growth. i imagine that's part of the draw of politicians to be there today? >> it is about job growth and about the way that the president understands that in 2012 the metric for him is about employment. if he made a meaningful dent in unemployment. they understand that they are not going to bring back manufacturing jobs in the next 12 months. but they do believe in the white house that they can promote innovation, the one thing that the united states has that no one else has and that's the reason the president is making stops in these places in silicon valley to talk about innovation and also to promote his jobs bill. he thinks that's the winning hand. the problem is these companies themselves don't hire that many people and the real jobs you get from innovation is years away. so this is a risky bet. >> so there's still a lag in silicon valley. i imagine one thing we won't hear a lot from president obama about is solyndra. >> he will probably say that's an ongoing situation at this point and he will probably still argue that the investment was still necessary to be made in the green energy jobs but that's likely to be something that the republicans are going to beat him up about in the next election cycle. >> his approval ratings are way down. is this normal for a president at this point in his first term right before an election year? >> most presidents will sometimes have a little lag near the end of of the first term and it's not unusual to have that here. i do think the other reason that we focus on this now however is that the presidential election cycles have expanded. you have to start running for president about two years out and that means we scrutinize every measurements of how somebody is doing. i think the real question is going to be where is he in the polls once the republicans have picked a candidate when we're five or six months, four months out from the election. but people are unhappy with him. he needs support to get the jobs bill through congress. >> lady gaga has been one of those weird additions to this. she paid thousands of dollars to get to president obama. what are your thoughts? >> i think anyone with money paid to get near president obama. whether he is a popular president right now or not, he certainly is here in california. she paid $36,000 to be there but she wanted to talk to him about the issue of bullying which has taken on new cogency think as a social issue in this country and good for her for doing that. >> yeah. can't wait to see what she wore, right? >> well, i don't know about that. but i think it will be interesting to see if he has something to say about bullying. >> i'm sure there will be more. thanks for joining us today. >> my pleasure. >> cbs 5 political analyst joe tuman. and in the meantime, we want to check in with lawrence for a look at our weather. i know you said it was fall, but the rain is going away?
