California homeowners are not alone, while we have homes tucked into hills that are prone to wildfires, florida is seeing a similar crisis. Of course the problem is the threat of catastrophic hurricanes. Lets get to our other big story, talking about the smokies guys, they just arent letting up. As we look across the bay area, tomorrow is another spare the air day but we should get some relief from all of that unhealthy air soon, but its just part of the story darren peck is tracking. The Atmospheric River is likely going to put the fire out that is producing office smoke. But, we have started a familiar pattern for this time of day, air quality is going downhill right now. It did yesterday at this time, and its about to do it again. Let me show you why. The sensors are scattered across the bay. This is a great way to pick out the patterns of what is going on. The orange is telling you where it is unhealthy for sensitive groups and we have been sitting there for far too long. What we are seeing through the city and the golden gate is more orange showing up, in other words, the air quality is going downhill just like it did yesterday. Right through the golden gate, that is because we are starting to get the onshore flow and it is blowing a little more smoke. In the meantime, take a look at the santa clara valley. It is also a little bit worse down here because it pulls up along the base of the mountains. Here is why the air quality is going downhill for the evening, watch the timestamp. There is a higher concentration of smoke sitting off the coast, it gets pulled into the bay. This time of day, the wind starts to kick up a little bit. And that is why it is pulling in more smoke and pulling it into the bay. We will keep it overnight, itll still be around tomorrow. The bay area air Quality Management district has extended it one more day but the air quality technically will be a little bit better tomorrow. Heres the official forecast, this is saturday. Probably still going to be unhealthy but we will take a look at why the air quality starts to improve by late tomorrow and certainly on sunday and on monday, heres the rain. The storm coming to the Pacific Northwest is going to be fueled by an Atmospheric River, we will talk about that and we will talk about the chance for rain. We are not getting blockbuster rain at home but Northern California will. Back to you. As california struggles to deal with the crisis of drug addiction, some cities are trying a new approach, reward people for quitting rather than punish them for using. We are talking about paying people to stay sober and now these programs are getting federal funding. San francisco is leading the effort and already seeing results. Reporter when dana turned 19 years old, she started using heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl, she is a new mom taking first steps to turn away from addiction. He has definitely given me a new perspective on things. Reporter cities and scenes like this have become too common. The city is on track to far surpass the Record Number of fatalities of 725 in 2020. We are in the midst of a profound Public Health crisis. Reporter participants check in weekly, if they test negative, they received gift cards. They are doubling down on incentives to keep the addicts on track. It has been proven through multiple scientific studies to be an effective behavioral treatment for Substance Use disorders, especially for stimulant use disorders. At the federal level, the Va Health System has been funding programs for a decade, and for the first time california is using medical dollars expanding eligibility statewide, getting attics a second chance. Theres so much support that i didnt know was out there. Reporter one of the supervisors talks with dana regularly, he believes expanding the program will make a difference in the fight against addiction. Theres a lot of help in this city, and its not a onesizefitsall, but just participate and you never know where the help is going to come from. Reporter they have seen a dramatic change in the young mother, for dana, it is a shift she believes others can make, too. Just do it, really it comes down to whether or not you want to change because if you dont want to change, it doesnt matter what kind of research is out there. Reporter it is getting her a new path forward and the possibility of more doors opening up for a different kind of life. The department of health says it is already scaling up programs like this across the city so more people have access. They didnt think it would happen to them and yet it did, we found two groups in Golden Gate Park today who had their car windows smashed. This is not a new issue in the city, but some big names are getting involved, saying the city has been given over to the criminals. Anne makovec joining me with all the details on this. A couple of big names including elon musk ready to put money on the table to get rid of one supervisor. Preston suggested that tourists should be warned not to leave anything valuable in their cars. The cars are highly sought after targets since they often have luggage and contained valuables and sometimes highend cameras or computers. They can easily be identifiable with outofstate plates or barcodes from rental companies. Two groups of tourists willing to share their stories. I thought i was hiding this device. We didnt know how serious the problem was. We just knew there were breakins but didnt actually think it was this serious. This is our first day in San Francisco. Yesterday, dean preston called a public hearing about car breakins. Visitors are not only losing money and property, but often left traumatized and with a very bad experience in our city and i should say it is not limited to the tourists, but it is disproportionately the tourists. The goal was to update people on what the city has been doing to fight the epidemic, and finding new avenues to address it. City data shows there have been over 15,000 car breakins since january and popular Tourist Spots are the most likely places to get hit. At that meeting, a Police Commander listed several commonalities, theres usually multiple thieves per vehicle, they operate in broad daylight, they often use a lookout to assess Undercover Police and afterwards, they usually speed away. The city has launched several campaigns over the years and the supervisor suggested doubling down on that, tweeting , we need to pound in every way possible the message to visitors, do not leave anything in your car. If there was a reward for thieves, there would be less of a risk that he also talked about Police Patrols but that tweet earned him a lot of backlash online with people accusing him of getting into thieves rather than fighting the issue. And even victim blaming, one of those voices criticizing preston is bay area capital investor, saying he would donate 50,000 toward unseating him in the upcoming election. And elon musk said he would double that amount, tweeting that preston is the person most responsible for the destruction of San Francisco. And preston has already been using this to send out fundraising emails saying it is Crystal Clear my opponent is the billionaire, he has demanded they pay their fair share in the city and they are just fed up. He also said in a statement that it is surprising one of the richest men alive in the face of threats like, change and poverty has Nothing Better to do than sit around tweeting attacks on a city supervisor. Still ahead, it is a way to show you did your civic duty. One bay area city helps draw more people to the polls. For the first time, the department of elections held a contest to determine the next i voted sticker design. Lauren toms spoke with the team behind this contest that has already received hundreds of submissions. Reporter deep in the heart of city hall, artistry and civic pride are colliding in a way San Francisco has never seen. Creatives from across the city are submitting their designs to the next sticker to be handed out at the next election. Carly is part of the team analyzing over 300 sticker submissions. The idea came from other cities and is already doing what they set out to do. More than just design a new sticker, but engage more voters. We are also reaching communities that weve had trouble reaching before, eligible but not registered. College kids, people who dont normally participate in the elections process are getting really excited about elections because of this contest. Despite being a historically politically engaged city, voter turnout has struggled in recent election cycles. In 2022, 62 submitted their ballots, down from 74 in 2018. But carly hopes this contest will help turn those numbers around. We hope this makes people excited to get out to the polls and go to their polling place on election day and go to the Voting Center and when they opened their packet, they are going to see their new sticker. It appears to be working, web traffic to the Elections Department is up and they saw a spike in Voter Registration during the time of the contest. Voting is your voice, it is your opportunity to get your voice out and to make a record of what you believe in, who you stand behind, what issues are important to you, what candidates are important to you and not just what you are doing for yourself, but what you are doing for your community. Each design must follow strict parameters. It must say i voted in different languages. I think it says they love their city. I think it says they are eager to participate in the elections process, that they think voting is important and they know what represents San Francisco. Reporter tapping into the hearts and creativity of San Francisco voters. The final designs were chosen by a panel of judges including local artists, a member of the arts commission, graphic designers and art professors, the top three winners will receive cash prizes and a sticker will be on the next two elections in San Francisco, including the 2024 president ial election. The trees were considered a potential hazard in storms, but neighbors were worried about two eagles they have seen flying around the trees. They agreed to cut some trees but leave three large ones for the eagles. Hats off to the neighborhood for bringing it to their attention and saving the bald eagles who hopefully appreciate it. And the fact that they got a resolution on it so fast. That was a quick one. Questions on the smoke, when is it going to be done . We are going to the giant bingo card, we have more good than not good, but we have one more day. We are still pretty much unhealthy for sensitive groups, that is the view from the top of the Salesforce Tower and it looks almost identical to yesterday. If you look back here, theres a long stretch of days where the air quality is going to improve and there are bigger issues as possible for that, the first rainmaker of fall is coming our way and itll be getting here on monday. I want to show you what that looks like. Lets focus on the possibility for rain from that storm. This one looks pretty good, that is a welldeveloped storm going into late september and it does have a component to it, theres an Atmospheric River that will be feeding into it, it is moderate. We only point these things out because weve gotten so much better at recognizing them but what we are not pointing out in this case , it is not going to be a rainmaker in the bay. It is good because it is going to put the smith complex fire out, that is going to get poured on from this. When you are trying to get out of fire season, it is great news from that standpoint. But for our benefit in terms of rain, theres the leadingedge just approaching sonoma county, we are in that in between timeframe with the highresolution forecast model seen this coming, then it cuts it off right before he gets here. We are going to the lower resolution stuff, which can go long range, watch what happens. The very southern edge grazes the northern part of the bay. So, sonoma county, napa, you will get some rain out of this. We will just visualize where its going to measure from this. That is mostly sunday and this is monday night, into very early Tuesday Morning and we are coming in for more detail, just a pull out a little more of the bay and really the only place that is registering would be santa rosa. We have to start somewhere, this is the first one of the season and this is all around good news. The air quality by monday, the smoke is going to be a distant memory. By sunday, we would have already vastly improved. And the marine layer is coming back tomorrow morning. We will wake up with gray skies, still some haziness from the smoke. Then higher clouds will show up. And by sunday, itll be far less hazy. Daytime highs tomorrow, we are still below average, only mid70s for the warmer valleys. So, theres the rain on monday. Every one of the microclimates gets that except one, san jose, it is not getting far enough south, so we dont have rain on monday for the santa clara valley. And the north bay is probably the most likely. We do have the possibility of the inland valleys, livermore, trivalley, if you get any rain on monday its going to be a few drops and itll come late night monday and early Tuesday Morning. But the good news is, the atmosphere is totally rearranging itself, it will get rid of the smoke and on top of that we will get some rain. A modern bay area legend celebrating her betty Reed Middle School celebrated the 102nd birthday of its namesake today, she served as a park ranger at rosie the riveter museum in richmond before she retired at the age of 100. Initially she said she didnt want anything special to honor her special day and all she has accomplished. I really didnt want anyone to name anything after me until someone called and said they wanted to name a school after me and i said, thats exactly what i want. She told the students their lives are going to be a surprise and she says the rest of her birthday plans involve eating plenty of pizza and cake. Good for her and happy birthday.
