Joining us today is sean to share the findings from the new study and provide a bit of some tips for future parents and maybe make people without kids feel better about life. Your study found that people often underestimate the cost to raise a baby. What do people say they thought it cost to raise a baby and what did it actually cost . Over half of the respondents assumed that raising the baby in that first year cost 5,000, around there. 20 actually thought it would cost less than 1,000 and their study which was taking the common expenses we see in that first year, taking average pricings, the average price will be somewhere between 21 and 52,000 in that first year. That is probably a lot more money than most people realize. Over 50 , 5,000, 20 , 1,000, and i can tell you it costs a whole lot more than that to raise a kid, in the first year of life. What did you feigned is the greatest expense . Two things, one, make sure you have good conversations with your partner and figure out, why do we want to buy this . Are we buying it to show off to our friends and validate our selfed or does your baby actually need this. The second advice, talk to experienced parents. You and i can share advice to new parents about what we actually think is useful and what is not and it takes experience to get there. I actually created a blog as a result of overspending for my first child. I feel like i should share everything that i learned with the mistakes i made. Stick around, Spring Cleaning, hints for your wallet, what credit card you should cut and how to protect your credit score. Its that time of year again, Spring Cleaning, and that has the folks at nerd wallet asking, whats in your wallet. We get tips on Spring Cleaning from our wallets, from getting rid of clutter to tracking our identity, and lets start off with this obvious question, do we really need to spring clean our wallets . If so, why . Theres really three reasons it benefits everybody to do this. One of them, you mentioned already, its safety. Every credit card in your call lit is a potential vector of fraud. The next one, for back pain, men carry wallets in their back wallet, make that thinner. And the next one, you never know which one you are going to use and you spread your rewards. Its a good time to analyze the apr and decide which ones to focus on. How does closing cards affect your credit . Will it bring the score down . Closing cards can hurt your credit and in many cases, it doesnt and thats because old credit cards help your credit because it shows you have had the long Credit History, built that with the credit agencies, so closing the cards gets ready of the history. What i do, i put my old credit cards in a ziploc bag in a safe at home. Dont give out your safe number. You need to actually use the old cards, right . Make sure you use them every 618 months to make sure they stay on your Credit History and also your bank doesnt close the account on you. Everybody issuers can close it. So use it every once in a while. Ive got old cards since college that i keep open and on one of them, i put my doings pet insurance, so its a re occurring event, and i think i get points off of those. What about annual fees, a lot of us open up cards that maybe the fee is waived in the beginning because of big bonus miles and then you start to get a fee. Should i keep those cards open . If you want auto keep the card open for the sake of your Credit History but you are paying an annual fee, at that point i dont think the fee is worth it. The fee costs more than a benefit from the credit. You can boost your credit eventually, because going down, its temporary, and it will go back up. Thats right. If you are in a market to buy a home, i wouldnt do anything to change your credit at this point. Pay the annual fee this one time but close it next year. After you buy the house. Yes. What kind of card should we carry . Are there specific cards that are better than others that we should be choosing . Theres a lot of great cards out there. I try not to focus on the specific card but types. I recommend the consumers carry at least three types. One of them, an every day card, 1. 5 or 2 back on purchases, for grocery and gas. On top of that, id add a card that fits for your type of spending. Theres a card out there that offers 6 on groceries and another, 3 on gas, and cards that reward you extra for travel and dining. Thats where you think, where do i spend the most of my money and can i get extra points. The third, thats when the specific brand and that can be a store brand you like or travel brands. Thats where you say, i spend enough money with this brand i want to get extra points with that brand. My husband is a frequent flyer with a certain airline so i have a credit card with that airline, too. Does opening a new card actually hurt your credit . Some folks might be saying, im not getting any benefits for any of my cards. Maybe i should close some of these with guys and open a new one but will that hurt . The credible check is a small percent of your Credit History and only matters for about 69 months. The bigger story, when you open up a new one, you are getting a huge credit line increase because the bank says, they are lending you more money and that generally helps you. For the most part, your credit score is largely dependent on your debt to credit ratio, so if i have 50,000 worth of creditville available to me and i dont keep debt on my cards, thats good for my score . Yes. Every time you open up a new credit card you are increasing the denominator, so youre helping that ratio get lower. Real quick, do you have any final words, any advice for folks to declutter their wallet . Yes. Declutering your wallet can help you earn more points. I make sure im earning at least 2 back on every purchase. Dont waste your money. Make sure youre getting something for every dollar you spend. Thank you very much for being here. Its a great resource for us. Im sure well have you back soon. Back over to you.
