A massive fire at a temple multiple structures in flames a threealarm fire early this morning. Crews still on the scene dousing some of the hot spots there. The fire started at 2 00 this morning at a buddhist temple and went t a threealarm fire. Its all wooden structure so that posed a challenge to the firefighters. It spread to three homes, fire cars and other structures. We spoke to a monk who says he believes the fire may have started by a candle. The battalion chief lisa baker says exposure structures may have been affected so that means other buildings may have smoke damage but didnt get hit with flames. But still have fire damage from earlier this morning. Everything is under control. Buddhistred cross is helping the displaced people. Three people are in the hospital because of the fire. An arson investigator is on the scene. The cause is under investigation. In oakland, jackie ward, kpix 5. Fremont police are trying to figure out how human remains made their way into marshlands. Police say fishermen found a body last night near the dumbarton pier. Its unclear how long it was in the water. The Coroners Office is working to determine cause of death. Hayward police have a person of interest in custody they believe connected to the death of a san jose woman. Kpix 5s betty yu on how the missing person case took a fatal turn reporter Stacey Aguilar was last seen leaving a party in hayward. She was reported missing days later and found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a rural area off Morrison Canyon road in fremont over the weekend. We do have a person of interest in custody. We cannot release the name until charges are filed. Reporter the missing 22 yearold san jose womans death turned into a homicide after Hayward Police found her body. Just days before, her boyfriend was questioned by police and arrested for Domestic Violence against stacey. The people in this community can sleep at night not being worried that theres a murderer out on the loose. Were very confident moving forward that this person of interest, um, is the right person. Reporter over the weekend, one of the search volunteers spoke with staceys mother in mexico. [ speaking spanish ] she said she doesnt have any information. She said why, you know, this happen for my daughter . Reporter Hayward Police say they believe stacey was killed here in hayward and her body dumped in nearby fremont. Again, they wouldnt say if her boyfriend is a suspect in her death. Her official cause of death has still not been released. In hayward, betty yu, kpix 5. Police have not revealed how they knew where to search for aguilars body. She fell into a hole and got in freezing cold water and now were hearing from the bay area crew that came to her rescue. Rescuers conducting a training drill in the sierra sunday afternoon, andria borba reports reporter it was supposed to be a sunny day of snowshoeing on castle peak for the white family from orangevale. Then tenyearold samantha got off trail and into trouble. At that time i noticed that she wasnt in powder. She was actually sinking on what looked to be a partial snow bridge. Reporter with mom and dad trying to pull her out, samantha slipped in. When we looked into the hole, all we could see was her head. I think it was scary that i was down there because it was dark and i could barely hear what anybody was saying. Reporter dad got on the phone to 911 in truckee when after a climb on castle peak help came in from marin county. One of them asked is everything okay . No, my daughter is trapped in this hole 10 or 15 feet down. He asked, can we help . I said who are you . He said were marin county searchandrescue is. I said absolutely you can help. Reporter the marin county rescuers were training and didnt have all of their gear with then and were forced with them and were forced to improvise using ropes and a carbiner to get her out. She is a lucky girl with such cold water. Reporter she was back on solid ground in 15 minutes. Then it was time to attend to her wet feet and prevent hypothermia. A heated meeting in san mateo over Affordable Housing and a 97yearold woman being evicted. Cate caugiran reports on how the county is dealing with skyrocketing rent reporter it was packed inside of san mateos st. Bartholomew auditorium. Congresswoman Jackie Speier and officials listened to the struggles of renters evicted and landlords trying to pay their own bills. Where will the money come from to pay for this . Theres no question that many renters have had to leave their apartments and there have been a lot of evictions in the county. Reports of a Sexual Assault in a ucberkeley frat house. Its one of four attacks near the campus in a week and a half. The recent assault allegedly happened early saturday morning. Berkeley Police Believe this man committed at least three of the recent assaults but nothing shows he was involved in the incident on saturday. Police think the suspect on video has been aggressively grabbing young asian women as they walk alone near campus. So we have to travel there at night for our meetings which is dangerous and i dont feel safe. One female student told us that she traveled in groups and carries pepper spray. Police still arent sure if the string of assaults are all connected. Bay Area Police Department is making changes after protestors insisted it was far too trigger happy. A teenager on this tour helicopter that crashed off oahu has died. The 16yearold boy was trapped under water thursday and rescuers had to cut his seatbelt to free him. A tourist from redwood city was among several witnesses who jumped into the water to rescue those on board. Two of the teenagers family members are hospitalized. The pilot was also hurt. A black student at San Jose State University says he has endured months of racial abuse by his roommates and now they face jail time but not for a hate crime. In 2013 the three white defendants clamped a bike lock around their black roommates neck, put up a Confederate Flag in the room and used racial slurs. They were convicted of misdemeanor battery but the jury deadlocked on hate crime charges for two of them and the third was not guilty. Hate crimes are always challenging cases to prove because you have to prove what was going on in someones mind when they were committing a certainly act. The jury had a lot of issues with regard to whether this was a hate crime which is what this case was about. The jury says since the incidents happened at different times it was hard to prove intent. Guadalupe parkway off to a good start. Bay area birds are showing up on beaches all covered in oil and looking very sick. It turns out a shipwreck from the 50s is doing all the damage. The emaciated birds have rednecked grieve. Nine have been rescued since december. They were exposed to oil in monterey where a shipwreck of the ss Jacob Luckenbach in 1953 dumped 457,000 gallons of fuel. About a decade ago they tried to clear out all the oil. This was a portion of it that was inaccessible and apparently thats now leaking. The coast guard cleanup removed the oil until 2012 but el nino storms worsened the effect of the lingering debris and now the ship is sealed off and is about 17 miles off the coast in 180 feet of water. Caltrans found several areas of the bay bridge tunnel where concrete to potentially crack and come lose. Last month a piece of concrete crashed down on the eastbound lane causing thousands in damage to the cars that ran over it. Since then a dozen more trouble spots have been found. We have repaired the problems now. We need to find out whats causing it getting to the root cause of it. Among the possible causes being investigated, corrosion from leaking rainwater. Police are trying to track down a Soccer Player accused of punching a referee. It happened sunday during an adult league game at a Rec Center Field on capitol avenue in San Francisco. Police say the referee had apparently penalized the player and then argued the call and was ejected from the match. That player then approached the ref prefrom behind and let him have it. He punched him. The referee it being treated for a broken jaw and brain injury not considered life threatening. The player drove off. Police have witnesses and are confident they will find the man soon. To strongarm robberies at the stoneridge mall in pleasanton and the attacks are related. This is a sketch of one of the suspects. Police say he and two other men threatened a 17yearold girl with a weapon saturday night around 8 00 grabbed her purse and took off in a silver suv. The next night a 63yearold woman was attacked the same way. The suspects also took off in an suv. The mall has since increased security. New proposal would severely restrict dogs in the Golden Gate National recreational area. Off leash walking would be limited to five areas. And access would be restricted to certain parts of the areas. Dogs would be completely banned in some other areas that are currently leash sites on leash sites, rather. It would prevent humans and pets from enjoying agent according to the opponents. This federal bureaucracy is imposing its will on the local community and completely ignoring the needs of the people who live nearby and frequently use those areas the very reason the ggnra was created. The new restrictions are subject to a 60day public review and commen period. Final approval may come from the National Park service by the end of the year.
