Damage here on the Apartment Building on the 400 block of south 8th street near san jose state on the third floor. The San Jose Fire Department says a resident was striking a match while on the phone and then tossed the match on a couch. He then went outside to continue to talk on the phone and thats when he noticed smoke and flames. Instead of running back inside to warn the roommate, he called the roommate on the phone. The roommate was by that time trapped by the flames and made a dramatic escape. It was reported that the person that sustained the burns did run through the fire and he did have some significant seconddegree burns. I saw one guy probably like three minutes after i stepped out, he just sprinted outside. I saw a little flames on his back. I hope hes all right. Reporter three or four other units were damaged by the fire. 11 people total have been displaced. We are hearing that the red cross is helping them find a new place to stay overnight or at least the next couple of days. Back to you. Thank you. Chaos as a daly city medical building is evacuated while s. W. A. T. Teams search for a gunman after reports of shots fired there. Now an 84yearold man is in custody. Kpix 5s cate caugiran live down in daly city now to explain how all these events unfolded. Cate. Reporter frank, that man and suspect has been identified as Raymond Iwase. Police say when they arrested him at his home they found guns a gun and ammunition. Heres video from the scene yesterday. The shooting prompted a lockdown and evacuation of the medical office that you see. Kpix 5 learned that iwase was a former patient at the serramonte Medical Center. Witnesses told us that the gunman was targeting one doctor an internist named kevin wong. Doctor saw the man with the gun and he ran out and the shooting was behind him but luckily it missed him. Reporter just before 1 30 yesterday afternoon, police say they got reports of a gunman in the medical office. Iwase allegedly fired one shot and witnesses say target, dr. Wong, ran through the parking lot after he got away and tried to warn others about the shooter. Officers went from room to room trying to track down iwase. They took four hours but werent able to catch up with him at his home. He was booked into jail last night. No court date yet. Live in daly city, cate caugiran, kpix 5. The doctor who was targeted is not speaking publicly about the incident because of an ongoing investigation. The father of that teen who hitched a ride to hawaii in a wheel well of a plane is now finally speaking out. He says his son has long wanted to go to somalia which was his intended destination. As betty yu reports, though, the teen also struggled to fit in at his new Santa Clara High School [ nonenglish language ] spoke to the dad after his son survived a 5. 5hour flight hidden in the wheel well of a him Hawaiian Airlines plane. But the Fire Department says this is strangely enough a case of distracted candle lighting. The San Jose Fire Department says it was a case of get this distracted candle lighting. Thats right. A roommate was striking a match while on the phone. The roommate that was in the living room lit a candle. And the match he used was discarded and landed on the couch and thats still under investigation though. Police say a Security Guard shot and killed a doctor and father and son visiting the hospital. The guard on duty to protect the staff suddenly just started shooting at doctors and patients. The ak thatter was wounded the attacker was wounded and is in custody. A pr campaign for the new York City Police department backfired and is now spreading to Bay Area Police departments. The twitter mynypd was used in hopes of finding sweet heroic pictures of Police Officers doing their jobs. Instead, many people posted pictures of police brutality. Lots of pictures like this. With that stock split, it would bring the value of the stock down to about 75 and thats increasing chatter that the dow jones may bring on apple to replace another company in its list of 30 industrials. Apple shares are shooting higher on that news. Also, facebook getting good cheer from investors after its revenue rose 71 to 2. 5 billion in the quarter. Profits triple be to 642 million. The market is still a little cautious this morning because of rising pensions in the ukraine. Lets take a look at the big board. The dow now lower by 9 points after a positive open. Kcbs radios financial reporter jason brooks, thank you. Now for a story only on 5, century 21 theater in san jose won a small victory on tuesday. Its now eligible to be considered fortunate historic register for the National Historic register saving the building and validating its place in history. But history may be ignored and the building demolished. Kiet do reports. Reporter its only been three weeks since it closed but the century 21 theater dome is literally a shell of its former self. Before leaving, the operator removed all 1,000 seats leaving just a bare floor. They even took out the 120foot silver screen, one of two remaining curved cinerama screens in the state. And it turns out the famous domed roof was leaking. The theater is eligible for lists in the National Register. Reporter earlier this week the state Historical Resources commission heard arguments on both sides about nominating the dome to the National Historic register. Theater lovers say its one of the few surviving examples of san joses postmodern history and full of memories for generations of moviegoers. This may well be the last of its kind in california perhaps the whole nation. Reporter the domes last show was packed. But the owners criticized the recent surge in interest. Where were those audiences over the last number of years . If everyone continues to be so interested in going to that theater, i think we would have seen that over the decades. But what we saw was the opposite. All in favor, say aye. Aye. [ applause ] reporter in the end, the Commission Voted unanimously to nominate the theater to the National Register saying postmodern architecture is rare rare. I hope the building can carry on in a use that makes everybody happy and supports the community. Reporter the special designation would certainly be a boost but its largely symbolic. It doesnt guarantee protection. Since the city can choose to ignore it and demolish the building. Its a positive step. And well take what we can get at this point. Reporter kiet do, kpix 5. Tuesdays recommendation now goes to the National Park service which has the final say on whether the preservation process moves forward. Not much left of the theater though. Seats are gone. This drive time though still looks good no big problems yet through berkeley but the 580 approach probably the worst right now. Backed up like i said i think into the maze. The east bay city of albany is paying some Homeless People up to 3,000 each to leave city owned land there. A colony of homeless have been calling an area known as the bulb home for over two decades now. The property is slated to become part is of the eastshore state park. 28 Homeless People have reached a settlement with the city to leave and return for that cash payout. City Officials Say they have found permanent homes for 14 people. But some just dont know where to go. In worse comes to worst, ill move to san rafael because i hear they give tout tents to Homeless People. 25 Homeless People who live at the bulb have to leave as well not part of the settlement have as to get out by tomorrow. The governor has called a special session for his proposal to create a new revised Rainy Day Reserve Fund to save tax revenue from capital gains. The Fire Department says a resident was striking a match while on the phone and then tossed the match on to a couch then went outside to continue to talk on the phone and thats when he saw the fire. Instead of going back in to warn the roommate he called the roommate on the phone. By that time the roommate was trapped by the flames and had to make a dramatic escape. It was reported that the person that did sustain the burns did run through the fire and he did have some significant seconddegree burns. I saw one guy probably like three minutes after i stepped out he, uhm, he just sprinted outside out of the burning fire. I saw a little flames on his back. I hope hes all right.
