Firefighters and pg e crews are on the scene of a gas line break and building fire in san bruno. It has shut down a major thoroughfare in the city. A car hit a gas line and sparked flames at the pizza parlor on el camino roy al. Cruise are still on the scene and say el camino royal at interstate 380 will be shut down until 2 00. The driver of the car was not injured and no one was injured inside the pizza parlor. Pg e is working to fix the damaged meter. A grass fire early today threatened dozens of condos in pacifica. The tough conditions firefighters are facing even in winter time. Brian. Tough conditions is right, michelle. The calendar might say january but it feels more like july out here. Take a listen to this. It is bone dry and this is fire fuel in whats supposed to be the dead of winter. Feels like a nightmare. Its 4 30 in the morning, dead asleep. Thats when firefighters pounded on her door. She was just up the hill from this 5acre, 6 alarm grass fire. As the fire started to grow she said her husband and neighbor used their own gadden hoses to try and garden hoses to try and wet the brush around the condos. Whatever they could before the Fire Department got to our side. The fire threatened between 80 and 90 homes. All of those were evacuated. They said you got about 20 minutes. Wouldnt expect that in january in pacifica. You have enough wind blowing on it, its going to burn. The dry conditions create a potential fire risk year round, even with 6 inches of rain hitting pacifica last month, the long blush was dry enough to fuel the fire with 15mile an hour winds. Firefighters eventually contained it hours later, about the time the sun came up. Kind of look out going oh, it was so dry but it was the last thing i ever imagined. Reporter crews lifted that Evacuation Order earlier this morning. No homeowners were hurt but several firefighters had to be treated for poison oak. Fire crews will stay on scene today clearing brush and making sure the fire stays out. The cause is still under investigation. Nightmare for air travelers heading to the east coast right now. Many of these travelers wont even be able to get to their destinations today. 38 departures and 21 arrivals have been canceled so far today at sfo. The reason a historic blizzard expected to slam into the northeast part of the country today. The storm is expected to bring up to 2 feet of snow in much of the northeast. Some areas could even get 3 feet. Marlie hall has the latest from new york. A light snow is falling in the northeast but the real storm is on its way. This storm is going to rapidly intensify as it passes south and east of nantucket tomorrow. Snowfall rates pick up to 2 to 4 inches per hour. The storm passed through central ohio overnight stranding cars on the roads. In new york more than 100,000 pounds of salt are on standby. A blizzard warning was issued from new jersey to maine. The noreaster is expected to dump 2 feet or more of snow. Wind gusts could reach over 50 Miles Per Hour. On sunday new york city mayor bill de blasio warned people to take the storm seriously. Dont underestimate this storm, assume conditions will be unsafe. Weather experts say this could be the biggest snowfall in new york citys history. So far there are no cancellations out of Oakland International airport because of this storm, and only two cancellations so far at san jose international. Northern california pilot is rescued after he ditched his plane about 250 miles off the coast of hawaii. The pilot was flying in a singlement engine plane on a trip from tracy to maui. He radioed he was running out of fuel and planning to ditch. His airplane had a parachute that eased him down into the ocean, and then the pilot got into his life raft until a nearby cruise ship picked him up. Roadways across the area are going to get a much needed redo. Local agencies say they will be spending up to five times more on road maintenance in the coming years. This is a big step for many bay area cities that said in the past they didnt have enough money to make repairs. They will have tax measures to pay for the road maintenance. Other cities are using grants. Today is the beginning of a ninemonth closure at a busy san jose intersection. Its all because of construction on the Silicon Valley b. A. R. T. Extension. This is one of the most complex sections of the project and so finishing it is going to take some time, and starting today it will be closed until october. That is nine months from now. The section of sierra road and lindsey avenue will be completely closed off to all vehicles and even pedestrians. This also involves digging a tunnel so the rail line can go below the intersection. Neighbors opted for a bit more inconvenience now to save time later. We did talk with the community to see if they were willing to go a longer period of time in construction and then keep the roadway open or do a full closure for nine months, and we heard a resounding lets close it. Happening today Governor Brown is meeting with university of california president janet napolitano. The two are hoping to iron out their differences on how to fund the uc system and essentially serve as a two Person Committee that will bring its proposals to the uc board of regents in march. The board recently approved napolitanos plan for tuition increases despite objections from the governor who says the uc system needs to cut costs. California judges are upset with a decision to ban them from associating with the boy scouts. A state Supreme Court ruling bars membership in the scouts that discriminate against gays. Judges who are active in scouting rose to the justices to voice their opposition. The boy scouts started allowing openly gay youth to be scouts last year but do not permit gay adults to be leaders. Secret Service Agents scrambled early today when a drone landed outside the white house. Shortly after 3 a. M. Flood lights lit up the lawn when an officer heard a crash on the Southeast Side of the complex. The secret service says it was a socalled quad copter about 2 feet in diameter flying at low altitude. The president and first lady are in india, but their two daughters were in the white house at the time. Early indications there was not any sort of ongoing threat to anybody at the white house. The executive mansion does have aerial defenses but its not clear if they can detect something as small as a drone. Kpixs ryan reports, customers at a costco are being warned about a potential measles exposure. The posted warnings come from the Santa Clara Public Health department. Its a step to contain the spread of the Measles Outbreak in california with 80 confirmed cases including at least nine in the bay area. A person who is one of the two confirmed cases in Santa Clara County visited the gilroy costco last sunday january 18th. The Public HealthDepartment Says that person was infectious at the time and anyone who was at the store from 4 to 6 p. M. On the 18th may have been exposed. Shoppers we talked to were caught off guard. You always go there every sunday, and it was very shocking because i mean we heard about the measle outbreak, but we didnt think it was going to come down here to gilroy. Hopefully the problem calls down and the situation goes away and we wake up. The Public Health department is urging anyone to check their vaccination status for measles and to watch closely for any symptoms until february 8th. Watching her in journalism class you would never guess that Sabrina Villanueva was homeless not that long ago, but she was. It was her first years of high school. I think our first reaction was we have nowhere to go because, you know, we didnt. And yet she managed not just to stay in school but in the Rigorous International Baccalaureate program which requires College Level work. I think she knows to just keep doing the next right thing. Shes dealt with obstacles nonstop, but the next one comes and she takes a deep breath. She thinks i can handle this. Her teacher was shocked when sabrina finally told her what was happening. Her hardworking mom was laid off from two jobs during the recession, then the sixth eviction. We went from motels and shelters, and i went to friends houses. Then the tremors started. Her mom was diagnosed with parkinsons. It was really hard to focus on what was important because everything was important and everything, you know, was so big. The most extreme challenge anybody can go through, to not have a stable home, to not have parents who take care of you when things go wrong. Students make a lot of mistakes and usually there are lots of people to help you get back up on your feet. Sabrina got back up on her feet and carried someone else on her own. The same day they finally got a housing voucher her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I dont know what i would do if i lost her, but every day she kept saying, you know, youre not going to lose me. Im going to be fine. Im going to beat this. To say able to say that after everything thats going on is kind of amazing. Sabrinas mother was the one who told her to focus on her education, the one ticket out. I could do so many great things and why let, you know, this downfall ruin everything that i could be. I dont want to be that failure. I want to do something great. Her mom is in remission now.
