To the new eastern span of the bay bridge. City in answer is yes. Good afternoon, im michelle griego. Im frank mallicoat. The new span of the bay bridge will be open for traffic on labor day weekend. Theres a lot to do between now and then. Kpix 5 reporter anne makovec joins us live outside the meeting where the big announcement was just made moment ago. Reporter now transportation officials are going from decisionmaking to planning because two weeks from tonight the bay bridge will be closed. The bay bridge as we know it. And five days later, or less, the new span of the bay bridge will be open. This was a whirlwind decision. The Oversight Committee made the call 15 minutes ago. First the federal government approved a temporary fix for the 32 bolts that snapped on the bridge in march and then we heard testimony from two independent panels who concurred that the new bridge is safer than the old bridge, even while the permanent fix, the saddle, is being installed. Theres risk to all of us. If we have a design level event, we want the public on the new safe bridge. Reporter a lot of factors went into todays decision, much of it logistics dealing with the closure which is going to last up to five days beginning on wednesday, 28th, monday labor day. They are talking about repaving and painting work. If they finish early, they may open earlier than labor day. The reason that they chose this weekend or that weekend was because this arent as many events in the bay area because thats when the opening was originally planned. They have a lot of talking and planning and a lot of work to do between now and two weeks from today. Back to you. But its great news nonetheless. We also heard about a possible bart strike. Whats that about . That was one of the factors in the decisionmaking process. They wanted to close it now in case theres a bart strike later. Right now they know bart isnt going to be on strike and they can get extra people across the bay those people impacted by the closure of the bridge. Commuters are applauding especially in the east bay. Anne makovec live for us in oakland, thank you. You can find all the latest developments about the bay bridge anytime at our website, kpix. Com bridge. We break down the engineering behind the temporary fix for the new span plus bridge history with miss oakland of 1963.
