Clear skies above right now but earlier today, a pretty frightening experience after someone thought he had been hit by lightning. Thats a lot boom. A real bright light. And it shook the building and kind of shook the whole area. Reporter kirk says he has never heard anything like it before. It was so loud, i have never experienced anything like that. It was indescribable big boom, bright white lights. Reporter the men were working on golf equipment for stanford when lightning suddenly hit a couple of buildings and a palm tree. One person working with the horses across the way at the Red Barn Equestrian Center thought he was hit by lightning when he lost his hearing for a short while. And just as quickly as it started, the storm moved on hitting highway 85 bringing rain, dark clouds and wind. And leaving everyone near the lightning bolt in stanford with a story to tell. Everybody was pretty surprised and glad they were inside. Reporter and by the way, that lightning also caused the power to go out and some alarms to go off here for quite a while. The team said it was for improving youth athletic fields unrelated to the soccer fields next door to levis stadium. No to parking lots, yes to kids reporter last month soccer players showed up in force at a City Council Meeting to oppose the attempt to buy this land and build parking lot. The 49ers backed away after the opposition. She says she doesnt think is comes with no strings attached. The timing is wrong. This is right in the middle of negotiations. She is wrong. She conflated a youth soccer park issue with a generous donation of an amazing philanthropic park. Reporter dominic wanted to take the money. He said the city lost a big opportunity to fulfill a lions share of the citys parks and rec budget. This paranoia unfortunately left three Million Dollars way from serving our youth. Reporter a 49ers spokesman told kpix 5, the team was disappointed the city rejected the donation. The city council is still willing to sell the land for the right price. The 49ers were offering 15 million for the lands but the city thinks they can get four times that price for this prime piece of real estate. Christian hartnett, kpix 5. New report shows the Oakland Police department is very understaffed especially in investigations units. New at 6 00 some people tell da lin the lack of Police Officers is emboldening the bad guys. Reporter its a bad game of cops and robbers in oakland where there are too detectives and too many arm robberies. In an Oakland Police report it says last years the department it 8 investigators working on 3300 robberies. Thats one detective assigned for every 419 cases. In other similar sized cities the case load is much lower. One investigator for every 164 robberies. The volume is so high, resources so limited so we have to triage to do the best we can with only a small number of cases. Reporter police say thats why only 20 of the robbery cases are ever investigated and much fewer are solved. Sometimes even if we have a lead on like a Home Invasion burglary those leads are not followed up on because we dont have enough investigate years people feel vulnerable and they feel hopeless. Reporter two gunmen robbed this woman in 2013. Her case was never solved. I really have taken to not walking out with anything i mind losing. I dont take my bag with me if i can help it. Reporter she agrees with city and Police Leaders the Department Needs more investigators and patrol officers. The deterrent effect is not there. The mayor is trying to add 40 officers to the force in the next two years. But some say it may not be enough. In oakland im da lin, kpix 5. Councilman dan kalb ordered the Police Report so the city council could decide how best to budget for the Police Department over the next two years. A Vallejo High School student has been found dead near campus. The teen was found on a hiking trail near Jesse Bethel High School shot to death. The high school and a nearby Elementary School were placed on lockdown for about an hour while police searched the area. Someone reported seeing a young man with long hair and White T Shirt running from the area. A disturbing discovery on the cal campus. A hidden camera was found in a womens bathroom in one of the dorms. The school has alerted women who may have been recorded. Police say they do have a person of interest in the case. And a 16yearold boy is under arrest for this bold Home Invasion robbery in san jose. He and a 17yearold teen are accused of breaking into a home in the evergreen neighborhood last friday. The suspects armed with knives chased a family inside upstairs. Hotly debated vaccine bill just passed the state senate today. The legislation prevents parents from getting vaccine exemptions for their children because of religious or personal beliefs. Children have to get vaccinated before they go to kindergarten. Thats the law. But kids who already have exemptions can wait until 7th grade if the bill passes. California is flush with cash these days. That means budget revisions coming down from the governor. The state has an additional 6. 7 billion in revenue. The adjusted numbers mean 2. 2 billion for drought relief. 62million for wildfires. And 380 million earned income tax credits for the states working poor. Theres an important deal to avoid tuition hikes at the university of california campuses. The uc system will get a 120 million increase plus the governor agreed to pitch in 436 million to the ucs underfunded pensions. Its part of a compromise that means in state undergraduate tuition at the ten uc campuses will remain flat for two years. We told you about the nasty turn a political race is taking. A cruise ship set to leave San Francisco in the next few minutes arrived this morning carrying norovirus. Crews spent the day cleaning every surface of the ship trying to disinfect it. It was supposed to be a dream 15day trip to hawaii. But more than 100 passengers got sick with norovirus. They told us the crew was prepared to handle the outbreak. 135 people of the 2500 passengers got sick. The centers for Disease Control says this was the fifth contaminated ship to dock at a u. S. Port this year. When you originally started a buffet on day one it was self serve. You went in and you dished up what you wanted. When the virus came up and people were starting to get sick, they changed it to where if you wanted something the staff served you. The ship is now headed to vancouver about 3 hours late because of all the extra clean up. With california in an epic drought Nestle Waters has a new source for the water that it bottles. The company runs five plants in california. Last year it went through 705 million gallons of water. Nestle says one way it can draw less is to convert a milk factory in modesto. It can extract all the water it needs from milk. Starbucks recently said it would stop sourcing bottled water in california because of the drought. Walmart has been under pressure to do the same. She hired a lawyer when she served the cup eviction papers which had no effect. Its a lengthy process and in the meantime the couple is holed up in the room and for now living rentfree. You cant just put somebody on the street. 100 years ago maybe you could call jack the leg breaker and he would take care of it but you cant do that anymore. Tenants have rights. You have to respect the Due Process Rights or risk being sued. Reporter the Attorney Says the couple has three previous eviction judgments against them in Santa Cruz County and maybe choosing this as a lifestyle. So they get to game the system by pro rating their Living Expenses over however many months they get to live in someones property without paying them. On the side of marsh creek road an instant Rushing Creek moved quickly. And we saw that lightning for quite a bit today. Helicopter that was delivering aid to earthquake victims in nepal. Three countries are searching in rugged terrain for the chopper. It disappeared tuesday north of kathmandu. Six marines and two nepalese soldiers were on board. Last months quake killed more than 8,000 people. More than a dozen died in avalanches on Mount Everest. He was once a sherpa but now works much closer to sea level right here in the bay area.
