After getting into an argument. The driver forced the passenger out and allegedly hit the victim in the head with a hammer. The victim has skull fractures. Within the last few minutes, uber said safety is the companys number one priority and treating the matter with urgency. Two big Security Breaches at mineta san jose airport. Now the woman who runs the airport is refusing to answer her boss questions. Len ramirez with why she says she doesnt have a choice. Reporter the two Security Breaches involving stowaways who walked on to airplanes from the streets grabbed headlines over the past five months but in the post9 11 era there have been other breaches that were kept secret. As an elected official i would like to know whats going on. Reporter that doesnt sit well with City Council Member pete constant, who is frustrated that san joses airport director a City Employee has been ordered into silence when it comes to other breaches by the transportation security administration. If there are issues that we need to fix, we need to know them. Reporter we know in april a teenager stowed away to highway in an airplane wheel well after jumping a fence and in august a woman sidestepped security to get on a plane in los angeles. When that story was out the airport tried to down play what happened. This was not a security breach. She was screened. Reporter the airport has since pulled back from that kind of statement. The tsa says publicly releasing details of previous incidents would be detrimental to airport security. Constant is asking for private briefings for the city council. There has to be a balancing act between whats private and disclosed for reasons of safety. Reporter top airport Officials Say this would like to share more information with the city council in private closed door sessions. But the final decision is not up to them. And today the tsa refused to say if they would allow it. In san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. The San Jose City council has weekly closed door sessions where private security briefings take place. Thousands of commuters who rely on Ferry Service had to find another way to work today. Captains walked off the job. Kpix 5s linda yee tells us the Striking Union says the Golden Gate Bridge district isnt not bargaining in good faith. Reporter take a look behind me. Im standing on empty terminal parking lot. Behind me, the idle ferry, not the usual sight on a friday night. They have been in contract negotiations since july. But they are stuck on a big issue which we have all heard before from another high profile negotiation session. Remember bart . It has to do with employees being asked to contribute more money into their health plans. Ferry captains, support staff and deck hands have been working without a new contract since july. Talks are stuck on pay raises and the bridge districts requirement workers contribute to their health benefits. We dont want to agree to that. Reporter more contributions, that seems to be what people are asking for now not just your union. Yeah. I think that everyone can relate to that. And keep in mind that the last three contracts these members have had have all had concessions on lower wages or no wages, on lower healthcare quality or higher healthcare premiums. Reporter heres the district contract proposal for ferry captains a 9 pay raise over 3 years, but workers must contribute another 2. 1 of their salary into the health plan on top of the 5 they already pay. The union wants a raise of about 11 over three years and an additional. 5 worker contribution to health benefit. The bridge district says its farery captains are the highest paid at a base salary of 83,000 a year. They already get 7,000 more than captains of the other two Ferry Services. And in addition, our benefit packages are better, significantly, than their colleagues on other ferry systems. Reporter as in any negotiation, there has to be room to give. Is there any room here . Theres been movement on both sides already. Reporter well, based on the numbers were seeing, they are still far apart on the issue. But ken, they are due back at the negotiating table on monday. This means Oil Companies will have to tell state and local agencies that potentially explosive crude oil is headed their way. This will allow them to have their Emergency Responders ready in case there is an accident. Now, we have told you about plans to bring crude by rail into the east bay mainly pittsburg and recently we learned it actually has been going on in the city of richmond. The citys mayor had no idea the oil was coming into her city. This has fueled the push for new regulations. A train in canada derailed and caused an explosion and fire, 47 people died, the city flattened. Mother 70 train cars were filled more than 70 train cars were filled with volatile crude oil. A second law will require Oil Companies to reveal more details about the fracking process. Two people are dead after the van they were in slammed into a samtrans bus. Chopper 5 caught the aftermath on El Camino Real on 12th avenue in san mateo. The cause of the crash is unknown. The van caused in oncoming lanes and hit the bus head on. Recess ever since the earthquake damaged nearby Napa Junction elementary school, these fourth graders have taken up residence at ac high. Tonight, air traffic is moving again but thousands of passengers dealt with delays and cancellations after a fire at a facility outside chicago forced the faa to keep planes on the ground. Omar villafranca reports. Reporter ohare and midway airports came to a halt friday morning after a fire at a nearby air Traffic Control center. This is an important part of the airspace system operated by the faa. You can tell there will be a ripple throughout the system when there is a glitch. Reporter more than 850 flights were canceled in chicago and delays caused backups across the country. The flight was canceled. Every flight to chicago is canceled. Reporter at the faa radar facility in nearby aurora, investigators found a 36year old contract employee in the basement with selfinflicted stab wounds. They say he used gasoline as an accelerant and deliberately set the fire. There was some, um, degree of, um, effort on their part to drag him out of the building but he was conscious. Reporter his vehicle was removed from the scene. The incident is now raising questions about faa employee screening practices. The faa is going to be looking into this contractor. The company that he works for, how he ended up getting this job. Reporter the damage is so extensive, that other facilities will have to pick up the overflow while repairs are made. San jose had 11 cancellations. Oakland had 13 flights scrubbed. The transit agencies all around the bay area and elsewhere in the u. S. Stepped up security because of word of an isis terror threat. Iraqs Prime Minister said yesterday that captured militants from isis told of a plot to attack subways in the u. S. And paris. U. S. Officials say there is no immediate threat from isis here at home but they are not taking any chances. Commuters in new york said there was a heavier than usual police presence. And bart also took precautions. Officials and police dogs at various stations and on the trains. San franciscos muni also increased security on platforms and on the trains. A dozen local politicians are behind the push to cut down some 70,000 trees in the oakland and berkeley hills. They want to avoid a repeat of the 1991 Oakland Hills fire. Many people blame the eucalyptus trees for fanning that fire which killed 25 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The politicians have asked fema to give them 6 million to chop down the trees. But some neighbors are saying, they want to manage and thin the trees to reduce fire danger. We want the fire risk to be addressed. We are not interested in misuse of public funds to advance a native plans restoration ideology. Eucalyptus trees are very fire prone, they are very oily. Theyre very dangerous. Theres a fire, that fire will spread very rapidly. Just like it did in 1991. Both supporters and opponents say they want the money from fema. They just cant agree on how it should be spent. News for napa valley farmer Grape Growers say the showe are hitting right in the mi tonights thunderstorms and rain showers are not welcome news for napa valley farmers. The Grape Growers say the showers are hitting in the middle of the harvest. They were hoping for a few more weeks of dry weather in order to get through the final phase of harvesting the grapes. If it can stay dry for two or three weeks and really start raining that would be perfect. Well take the rain when we can get it. Well be able to bring it in. It just might take longer. We had a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a time and just now, people are allowed to go back into the stands and the players are allowed to take the field because we have not heard any thunder over the past 30 minutes. This is a calm picture. Let me show you what it looked like when we were doing our weather at 5 20 this evening about an hour and a half ago. Here in napa at 5 30, thats not going to happen. We have had a hailstorm and 25 different rumbles of thunder over the past 10 minutes and take a look. It is just a deluge in napa right now. Heavy rainfall, flood on the ground on the roads, it is gone from cloudy and stormy to basically an absolute deluge right now in a matter of minutes. Reporter all right. So lets talk about the radar now. Things are calming down here but they are actually getting more active in other parts. That would be you santa rosa and other areas. So calming down around napa but its not in Sonoma County and northern marin county k you will get some showers and thunderstorms over the next couple of hours. As i mentioned up and down highway 29, the storms are ending. Things are calming down here although still showery. And a Flash Flood Warning continues in the Cordelia Fairfield area around rockville road and green valley road intense rain for two hours. Two inches of rain on the ground and flash flooding is occurring right now and that warning expires at 8 45 p. M. Big area of low pressure over the bay area keeping our temperatures down and giving us the thunderstorms. Temperature range 64 in santa rosa. 72 currently in oakland. You havent seen a drop of rain in oakland. So low pressure over the bay area has kept things very unsettled. And until that low leaves, the unsettled weather will not leave. A single mother who was disabled after a devastating car accident. It left her unable to work, raising three boys. This internship basically letting my mom know that im here for her. He has a big heart. Reporter he was in charge of his High School Dormitory at east Side College Prep a rigorous boarding school not for wealthy kids but for low income students in East Palo Alto. Markell stayed in East Palo Alto and eventually moved into the dorm when his mother struggling financially moved to stockton to save money. The separation was hard. But the education he got here got him into cal. He was a perennial deans list student and he was someone who always chased excellence and i think what makes markell stand out is not necessarily that distinction itself but the work that went along with it.
