Reporter allen, it only took twitter about an hour to fix the problem but during that time, some 40,000 people sent out tweets they didnt mean to. And according to one report, one of those people worked at the white house. Twitters app called tweetdeck allows users to monitor various feeds at once. Its kind of a desktop organizer. But around 10 00 this morning, this error message showed up on desktops. A hacker got users to unknowingly retweet this random code followed by a heart. Cnet Senior Writer Seth Rosenblatt says hackers have different motives. Sometimes its because they want password access. If you can get somebodys twitter credentials, for example, you might also be able to get access to their bank account if they are very lazy about using the same password for multiple services. Reporter but in this case it was done for fun once he figured out the vulnerability. You have to assume anything on the internet is public knowledge. It has been for some time. The most important number one thing i can recommend right now is set up two factor authentications. Reporter as an example, your atm card first level of security the card with the strip on the back. Second level, your p. I. N. You cant use one without the other. Twofactor authentication. Sending a text message with a p. I. N. Is a common second factor of authentication. Reporter twitter wasnt the only company hacked today. The notetaking service ever note had to explain its problems as did a site that helps gather and organize news. What makes you feel comfortable about it is even people like twitter can get hacked. Maybe its ignorance. Maybe i trust them too much. Reporter so about an hour after the hack was discovered, twitter notified its users by twitter of course to log out of tweetdeck, log back in and that should have fixed the problem. In San Francisco, im simon perez, kpix 5. Texas governor rick perry is set to appear at San Francisco Commonwealth Club in an hour. He is coming to california to lure business to his state. Perry was in sacramento yesterday. He tweeted out a picture of himself arriving in a tesla and made it clear he would like the company to build its new giga factory in texas. He pointed to too much red tape in the golden state. There is a real cause and effect here. Overtax, a overregulation, overlitigation. State lawmakers are considering legislation to relax regulations in order to entice tesla and other companies. The tesla giga factory could mean 6,000 new jobs. The city college of San Francisco has avoided closure for now. Proposed new rules will give ccsf two years to meet accrediting standards. The school was going to lose its accreditation at the end of july. This would have forced one of the largest schools in california to shut down. The extension is expected to be approved by the accrediting commission. In other headlines San Franciscos indeed officially out of the running to host the americas cup in 2017. Grants father has sued mehserle, bart and the other officers for the new years 2009 deadly shooting of his son. Mehserle said he pulled out his taser immediately when he got to the platform at the fruitvale station. He said two other officers had already drawn their tasers. His testimony focused on his firearms and weapons training prior to grants death. No bail for alleged chinatown gang leader raymond shrimp boy chow. Today a federal court judge rejected chows bail request despite pleas from his attorney, who says his client is a changed man. Prosecutors argued chow is a potential danger to the community. Chow is one of 29 defendants in a massive criminal complaint that includes suspended state senator leland yee. Chows Attorney Says he plans to appeal. San jose is cracking down on the hundreds of pot clubs operating in that city. The city has tough new rules. The clubs are going to have to be 1,000 feet from schools, parks and major businesses. They will also have to be at least 150 feet from homes. If the dispensaries dont comply in a year, they will have to close down. By putting regulations in place that make it up possible for clubs to operate, they are going that make it impossible for clubs to operate they are going to force another referendum. Another new rule they must grow all the marijuana they sell. How does your city stack up when it comes to the number of Police Officers . Well, the city of colma leads the bay area by far with 9 officers for every 1,000 citizens. Mike sugerman explains why such a small city has such a Strong Police presence. The rate increases will also help east bay m. U. D. Pay for maintenance and replacement of old pipes and equipment. The contra costa Water District is saying well done to the concord public works department. Those workers using almost 40 less water than normal. In fact, they are exceeding the current target goal by 15 . The drought is now taking its toll on real estate. Reporter angelie hemphill says the cost of maintaining lawns is too much for some sellers causing them to take a hit on the sale price of the home. This is the worst i havestein. Reporter the front yards of some homes waiting for buyers in sacramento looks like they havent seen water in months. Initially it was a beautiful green lawn. This is what happened because they cant afford to water. Reporter sean austin is a broker with eagle realty who says the drought is affecting his business. Would you want to buy that house if you saw it on the market right now . No, not at all. It doesnt look so great. Previously we would talk about staging and painting and all of that. Now were talking about the cost of watering lawns. Reporter he says the seller has to either pay the higher thannormal cost of irrigation or lose money on the sale of the home. They are having to take major reductions. This particular house behind me took a 9,000 reduction because it needs to have all new landscaping. Reporter and he says he has even had buyers back out completely. When we got some disclosures, the cost of what they were paying to irrigate, it became a big issue for the buyer and they canceled the property and bought a property with a low a drought tolerant landscape. Reporter he says even with a Housing Market on the rise, the drought is dropping prices. And he believes it will only get worse as we head deeper into the summer months. I dont see it getting better. A finish rescue operation is under way in a creek near gilroy. The department of fish and wildlife workers and volunteers trying to catch hundreds of steelhead trout. Those young fish are stranded in the low water cant make it to the ocean because of the drought. Theyre in trouble right now. Bigtime trouble. If we dont rescue them, they die. And theyre protected under the federal endangered species act. The rescuers are using small electrical charges to nudge those fish into their nets and then into a tank truck. They will be released three miles upstream in deeper water. Rescuers hope the trout can get back to the ocean next spring. So great white sharks may be one of the worlds most feared predators, right . It turns out theyre actually not at the top of the food chain. Kpix 5s don ford on the hunt for the super predator that actually devours them. Reporter its one of mans most primeval fears. Being eaten by a great white shark. Dramatized here in the film jaws. But documentary filmmakers say the tables may have been turned. Something attacked one of the great white sharks that they had tagged something big, something unexplained. Question came to mind is what did that . it was obviously eaten. Reporter the electronic tag washed ashore and revealed that the nearly 10foot shark was dragged to the bottom of ocean in a matter of seconds. These are the jaws of a juvenile white shark. Reporter a Senior Scientist for aquatic biology at the California Academy of science and one of the nations top white shark experts that had depth, was 30 degrees warmer purportedly than the water in which it was swimming. Reporter shark tags like this one suggest it was inside another animal the doctor once saw an orca whale killed a great white. Just grabbed this white shark, played with it, killed it, ate its liver and tossed it out. Reporter no one saw what happened to the great white in australia. Mans most feared predator has enemies, too. The documentary on it airs june 25 on the smithsonian channel. Ate the liver like Hannibal Lecter have a shark for dinner. Thats why when we get the flow of air coming off the ocean, it does get quite chilly around here. We are seeing that play out currently. Reporter vargas has become a face of the Immigration Reform effort after pleading with the pope to speak to the president on her behalf about her father, who is an illegal immigrant. Mario vargas lopez was facing deportation following a dui arrest but one day after the meeting with the pope, jerseys father was released from jail. Even if this fourth grader is able to meet some people in high places, activists say that Immigration Reform is facing an even steeper uphill climb following eric cantors loss to tea party candidate. The road for Immigration Reform has gotten much more difficult. And who knows whether or not there is enough will in the house to actually go past the rhetoric and do something. Reporter dr. Now to a story you will see only on 5. A 15yearold boy from wisconsin is healthy now thanks to the hard work of bay area scientists. Kpix 5s kiet do shows us how they used computer code to save him. Reporter something was killing Joshua Osborn and he was running out of options and time. They tested for everything they knew. They tested for viruses and bacterias, certainly wasnt for a lack of trying. Reporter last year in wisconsin, he was in a medicallyinduced coma, his brain swelling with fluids. Joshs last hope was an experimental new test 2,000 miles away here at ucsf. This is the actual code. Reporter his fate to be determined by 1200 lines of computer code. Joshs dna was rushed to dr. Charles chiu who had been developing a test known as next generation sequencing. Joshs sample was put through a machine that cranks out millions of dna results in a few hours. Typical manual methods of doing see queency can only sequence maybe 10 to 100 sequences at a time. This machine can sequence up to 50 million. Reporter dr. Chiu ran the massive amount of test data through his software and this just 96 minutes he found a needle in a haystack a nasty bug called [ nonenglish language ] the reads found in joshs sample mapped across the entire genome of the organism. Reporter the treatment was simple, high doses of penicillin. It worked. I feel wonderful. Being at my home with my family alive is probably one of the most amazing feelings a boy can get. Kate kelly brings us this weeks jefferson award recipient. Reporter following Kristie Fairchild as she walks through north beach in San Francisco, you would think she was mayor of the neighborhood. But to those who greet her every day, she is much more. For the last 10 years, kristie has been executive director of north beach citizens, a nonprofit thats made a real difference in helping the homeless in this community. Homelessness is not an intractable problem. I think there is a solution to it. I think we can fix it. Reporter her columbus Avenue Office is a Gathering Place for food, advice and resources. Im really serving as an advocate helping the individuals with getting their basic needs met. Reporter for those without a permanent home, she keeps their legal papers, collects mail and provides clean clothing. Most importantly, they want the help, shes there. Deforrest wiggins was living on the streets for two years when he met kristie. I remember kristie asking me, what do you want me to do for you . And i said, i want you to help me help myself get my life back together. And thats exactly what happened. Hey hi how are you doing . Reporter kristie got deforrest medical help for his depression, his ssri benefits and eventually permanent housing in the neighborhood. [ music ] reporter today he is back in touch with his family and once again playing the music he loves. I was existing before i walked into this door. Now i am living. Reporter north beach citizens was started almost 15 years by movie director Francis Ford Coppola who lived in the area and walking to work he saw the need. I think his real mission was to help the homeless in his neighborhood with dignity, respect and integrity. Reporter clients like brandan say you have to earn it and be accountable but its christies belief in every individual that makes the difference. She believed in me before i could believe in myself and when i stopped believing in myself, its shes an angel. Reporter now after being homeless for 17 years, brandan has an apartment and earns food vouchers through one of christies programs cleaning the very streets where he once lived. Brings me a lot of joy to see people flourish. North beach citizens helps 500 to 700 people a year and its Neighborhood Cleanup Program has removed 3,000 bags of trash from North Beach Park and streets.
