Reporter for 30 years, the hyenas calls have echoed through the Berkeley Hills. Rarely is a tv camera allowed to capture the goings on at uc berkeleys research colony of captive hyenas but they granted us access a couple of years ago. Now after decades of research, the dozen hyenas left at the colony have to go. Research funding and grant money has been tough to come by for a while and now its gone for good. I have seen almost everyone up here being born. Reporter she oversees the colony established in 1985 with animals from kenya. The hyenas have been used to study everything from hormones to immune systems, social structure and sexuality. She says the expense of keeping the hyenas which at one time totaled more than 50 is immense. They are carnivores. So they eat meat. And thats costs a lot of money. Reporter one of the ways they are finding homes for them is at zoos like the oakland zoo. Right now they have five of the colonys hyenas including the three behind me. They came here about a year and a half ago. They get a variety of ground meat and bones. They know youre here. Reporter she is in charge of the hyenas at the oakland zoo. She said they knew the colony was having tough financial times. Thats why we got through new younger hyenas but there are still some [ indiscernible ] reporter but for the colony, closing means more than finding homes for hyenas. The flames have burned more than 3,000 acres and may quickly turn this home into rubble and twisted metal. Thousands of residents in san marcos were allowed to return. It looks terrible. Reporter the wildfire in san marcos is one of 11 near san diego that has ravaged at least 20,000 acres and destroyed at least eight homes. Massive plumes of smoke from the fires are even visible from space. Police arrested this 19year old and two others on suspicion of attempted arson for allegedly starting at least three brush fires. But authorities havent connected them to the other larger fires. The cause of those wildfires is still under investigation. You could take anyone, right, who is experiencing the symptoms of ptsd, okay, and the things that we are currently emphasizing in school will fall off their radar because it frankly does not matter in our biology if we dont survive the walk home. Reporter last year in oakland, almost twothirds of the murders were actually clustered in east oakland. About 59 homicides. Then the car came this way and they started shooting and driving. Reporter we went to east oakland to talk with students at fremont high school. In an unusual of alumni from that school who now work there. It was really important to come back for our students to see someone who looks like them in the classroom and for parents to speak to somebody who actually speaks their language. You are able to be that change you want to see. Reporter the kids most at risk end up concentrated in inner city schools with the least amount of resources. The teachers deal with symptoms like fear, withdrawal, unexplained anger. If we were to follow traditional suspension, discipline policies have more students out than we would have in. And so we try and have those conversations with them to find out whats going on. Reporter that talking and those relationships are key. Single most significant protective factor in a childs life that is experiencing toxic stress is a caring adult. Reporter it can help even when professional counseling is not available. Too often our students dont feel like they can trust anyone, so you really have to take the time and be really, uhm, intentional about the relationship that you built with your students. We have to provide that safety. I think that comes first. If a child feels safe in your classroom, the child will learn. Reporter the students say there are activities that help them relax.
