[ applause and cheers ] >> reporter: the berkeley couple rushed to city hall and became the first same-sex couple to be married in the state since the decision. >> we were surprised that it was this quick but thrilled because really every day that goes by that gays and lesbians can't get married in the state of california is a day too many and it's about time that we're validated and the sooner the better and so proud of the state of california for making it happen immediately. it's amazing and we're grateful. >> reporter: and we want to take a live look from chopper 5 over castro and market, the epicenter of gays and lesbians in the nation. there's joy in the street once again. this happened so quickly. lightning fast. that ruling came down from the federal judge around 3:00 and by 5:00 the first same-sex couple in california was married. more to come. >> joe vazquez, joe, thank you. now, on to official prop 8 proponents. they say this is a disgraceful day for california. we just got this statement from them. "this outrageous act tops off a chronic pattern of lawlessness throughout this case by judges and politicians hell-bent on thwarting the vote of the people to redefine marriage by any means, even outright corruption." da lin was at the very center of the action this afternoon as it was going down in san francisco city hall when the first "i do" took place. da, what was it like inside city hall? people were moving around, cameras, the couple was coming up, kamala harris was coming down the stairs. what was that like? >> reporter: it was packed. it was very exciting. so i was in there. it was around 4:10, 4:15, when the first couple lined up to try to fill out their application for the marriage certificate. it's a small office. there were at least 20 to 30 people inside. aside from the family members, the couples' supporters and friends. there were at least 20 cameras that were inside including myself. and folks were screaming. they were cheering. they were yelling. a lot of happy faces. whether you're against same-sex marriage or for same-sex marriage, and when you see all those happy faces, you couldn't help but to feel that excitement to feel happy for the two people who have been waiting for so many years to tie their knots. and this is footage of the clerk's office after the first couple. you can see quite a few people outside and inside the clerk's office filling out applications applying for their marriage certificates and so far, i'm told by folks at the office 20 same-sex couples have gotten their marriage certificates since 4:15. the clerk's office will stay open until 8:00 tonight. they are typically closed on saturdays but tomorrow they open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. because of the pride events and also on sunday they are still waiting to see whether they will open the office sunday. but very exciting a lot of happy faces a lot of screaming. let's come back out live now. you can see it's quiet now but i'm told by city officials they are going to perform another marriage ceremony right now. the second major ceremony inside in the rotunda in a few minutes. back to you. >> it was interesting. there's a little bit of paperwork that has to be filled out at the clerk's office. you have to sign a marriage certificate. you have to fill out the paperwork and -- and it was kind of a crush of reporters in the way. and the couples trying to get up there and fill this stuff out and the clerk, like, wow, is this what our weekend is going to be like? >> reporter: i think so. earlier, everybody was trying to get a shot. you have the amateur photographers, you have the professional tv crews like us trying to capture history but the other folks also want to capture history so cameras, iphones, all the phones were out trying to get a piece of that history. >> capturing history. a good way to put it. it will continue in san francisco for the foreseeable future and in california now it's the law of the land. da lin at san francisco city hall, thank you. while san francisco gets the ball rolling on same-sex marriage, once again, other bay area counties are getting prepared and will open their doors on monday including santa clara county. the clerk's office got the okay to issue licenses after 4 p.m. but no same-sex couples came in. is that office is -- that office is prepared for a major rush come monday morning. >> if applicants want to get married right after their license to get married is issued they can do so. we can marry them right at the window. >> the paperwork is there now just a short time ago all 58 counties in california were given the go-ahead from the department of public health to go ahead and issue same-sex marriage licenses once again. >> the same-sex weddings are getting under way as gay pride weekend kicks off in san francisco. linda yee on the last-minute preparations. >> reporter: juliette, this is building up to be one of the biggest gay pride weekends ever but with all the crowds that are expected, somewhere in the millions i'm being told now, with that comes concern for crowds and safety. entertainment stages an exhibit booths at the civic center plaza are going into place. pride parade floats are being built, painted and decorated. this year, more than 200 contingents will be in the parade. and 300 exhibitors will be part of the pride celebration weekend. it's an event that attracts at least a million people. this year's historic supreme court rulings on doma and prop 8 promise to bring in even more tourists and businesses. >> within minutes of the decision being reached on wednesday,s of approached by wedding companies, planners, florists, so people are all over this. >> reporter: they all want to be part of it. >> it's a new market for them. >> reporter: pride organizers say hotels are full and bars and restaurants packed. but the crowded events on the street bring security issues. the boston marathon bombings are not forgotten. >> so again, you know, everybody's still raw from april. so we are going to have all our bomb techs and k-9s out. we have a lot of help from muni, gpt, dpw, of course, sheriffs, everybody will be out. we'll have three command posts. >> reporter: city emergency planners are ready for the worst to happen. >> we have surge plans in place. we have mass casualty plans in place. this is part of what goes into -- it's not just about managing a parade. it's about having everything in place in case something doesn't go as planned. >> reporter: so there will be very heavy police presence out here in the castro all over the city. they are also having a lot of volunteers. pride organizers say they are serious about keeping this a safe but fun weekend. live in the castro in san francisco, linda yee, kpix 5. >> we have posted a list of pride activities on kpix.com. another big story triple strike threat looming tonight in the bay area. ac transit workers have authorized a strike already. oakland city workers will walk off the job on monday. and the possibility of a bart strike very real tonight. kpix 5's ryan takeo on what's happening with those bart talks. ryan. >> reporter: both sides may be minutes away from their first face-to-face contact all day. they were supposed to meet at 11 a.m. that didn't lap. [ strike, strike, strike! >> reporter: bart's largest union so 21 sent a message it's not messing around. 1021. last night the union gave bart 72 hours' notice of a potential strike just in time for monday morning's commute but a bart worker strike is not a sure thing. >> management's position is we are going to continue to negotiate to keep the training rolling. >> reporter: both sides say an agreement is possible this weekend. but so far today, there haven't been any talks. union complain bart management wasn't there. >> we want to know district where are you? >> we need to get some momentum going. >> reporter: bart leadership says they are waiting for unions to counter yesterday's proposal. >> we are obviously very concerned. but all we can do is continue negotiating and try to avoid it. >> reporter: the negotiation sticking points are the same. the unions want raises. bart wants workers to pay into pensions and more for rising healthcare costs. and both sides claim they don't want a strike. >> our members do not want to go on strike. we only agree on it because the district has failed to negotiate in good faith. >> they want to continue to negotiating in good faith and so do we. we'll be back at the table trying to reach an agreement. >> reporter: bart disputes the union's claims that they are not working. they say they are working toward an agreement. in the last half hour, a bart spokesman told me that they are working through a mediator and that's why they haven't met face to face. the governor hasn't said if he will order a 60-day cooling-off period. that's still an option on the table. ryan takeo kpix 5. if there is a strike we'll have live team coverage starting monday morning on kpix 5 and on kcbs radio. log on to kpix.com for a list of transit alternatives. in fact, do that this weekend so you're ready to go. and we'll also show you how bay area agencies are preparing for the strike. meanwhile, more than 1500 city of oakland employees are preparing to strike monday, as well. those are workers from local 21 and seiu 1021. they are battling with the city over what they call dishonest budget numbers. they are asking for a raise pure and simple following a 27% pay cut that went into effect during the recession. [ laughter ] >> n-42. >> reporter: and for phyllis coronado it's more than a game of bingo. it's 73 inside, 100 outside. coronado came to an official cooling center because she doesn't have air-conditioning at home. >> really, really hot. i just really about die over there. >> reporter: back to a live picture now in downtown livermore. the cooling centers will remain open through many parts of the bay area this weekend. as for your health, health officials say the best advice, keep the sunscreen on, stay cool, try to stay out of the direct sunlight if you can. live in livermore, i'm mark sayre, kpix 5. >> looking wilted there. >> definitely hot by any definition as mark said. whatever you do, don't head to death valley up to 123 today at furnace creek. >> crazy. >> can you imagine? it's 121 right now at death valley. it's still 100 degrees at livermore. it is plenty hot. heat alerts for this weekend posted through the north bay to east bay and the south bay. it means that the afternoon highs will range from the mid- 90s to as warm as 108 degrees in the warmest inland valleys. so check on kids, the elderly. and if you need relief head to the beach. but leave early. that's going to be a lot of people heading there. i just imagine the central valley emptying out to the carquinez strait and headed for stinson. it happens on weekends like this. saturday highs 103 at fairfield. 102 at pleasanton. concord 101 and livermore more at 104 which is just 4 degrees warmer than now. it is 100 at livermore. 93 santa rosa. 99 in concord. what happens next? temperatures inland as warm as 108. there will be relief at the beach with numbers in the 70s. and it will remain hot. we don't get a break until tuesday afternoon all because of strong high pressure that's moving our direction from the desert southwest. so we will have hot days inland with some relief at the shoreline. this weekend if you head to the alameda county fair, 102 in pleasanton tomorrow. and at the pride festival in san francisco, much more moderate at 75 degrees. closer you get to the coast the more relief that's indicated in the numbers we have for tonight. temperatures will be in the mid- 60s by 9:00, low 70s around the bay and mid-80s inland later tonight. pinpoint forecast, if you are heading out of the bay area, you're heading right into heat. 105 sacramento, 110 fresno, 88 tahoe, doesn't look too bad. back in the bay area, just 75 in the city. 67 at pacifica. about 104 at livermore, 103 fairfield, 101 concord. extended forecast we hit the 100s and stay there inland for the next four days at least. wednesday looks like a break. bay will only be in the 70s. so this is not as much of a headline for fremont, mountain view and san mateo but everybody will finally begin to cool down -- just have to wait until next thursday. >> a little patience. >> can you believe it was raining on monday? >> yeah! >> no. so far away. >> that was a long time ago. >> thank you. want to take you down to los angeles show you what's going on down there. if you are just joining us, the ninth circuit court lifted its stay. gay marriage is now legal in california. and that is the first one that happened in los angeles. you're looking at the mayor there performing that ceremony. and that's pretty much the law of the land right now. they lifted a stay about three weeks earlier than expected. came down about 3:00 this afternoon. san francisco city hall will be marrying people tonight until 8:00. street corner in your neighborhood in the morning at rush hour there are at least 10 to 12 cars every hour passing by going within a quarter mile of where you're going. if only you knew your neighbor and where they're going, you could match up. >> reporter: avego tracks location, route, number of people in the car and even processes payments through the app so no cash exchanges hands. it's not aing about moneymaker -- it's not a big moneymaker like other services like lyft or uber. >> it's 20 cents a mile. an average journey from pittsburg to the city will cost less than five bucks. >> lowers my cost too because i'm getting part of that money she is paying and then plus it's just enjoyable that when you're driving, you have a buddy and someone to talk to. >> reporter: and being as it's a social app, there's incentive for everyone to be on their best behavior. >> so you as a rider can rate your driver and your driver can rate you so you're kind of ranked also so there's a is live at san francisco city hall where one of the couples that sued over prop 8 just tied the knot. joe. >> reporter: they were the first to sue and successfully so and they are the first to get married in the state of california. let me show you some video, that's kris perry in the glasses and sandy stier. they were married just a short while ago. the attorney general of california kamala harris presided. the supreme court of course cleared the way for marriages to resume with that decision on wednesday, nullifying prop 8. this afternoon at 3:00 the federal court lifted the ban on same-sex marriage. by 5:00, that first wedding had taken place. and check it out. already, there are people flooding inside in city hall including a couple that joins us now. you guys just got married here. >> that's right. >> tell me what happened. brian and jake. you were at work when you heard the news. >> we were both working and a friend of ours told us about two minutes after the report came down and we just jumped in our cars and flew across the bridge as fast as we could. we ran down market street. >> reporter: while you show us -- there it is, the diploma. what's going through your mind? >> i'm so excited. we have been waiting for a couple of years for the opportunity to marry each other just like any other citizen of california would be able to. and i'm so proud to marry the man of my dreams. >> congratulations to both of you. i understand inside the clerk's office it's pretty busy. >> it's wonderful in there. the energy is so good. everyone is in a really good mood. the choir is in there, as well. they rushed in so some of them are not even in their outfit. >> gay men's choir of the castro. thank you, guys. good luck to you. so it is pandemonium in there right now as they decided they are going to leave city hall open until at least 8:00 tonight possibly later and then all weekend, 9 to 5 tomorrow, and 9 to 5 on sunday. so right now, it looks like a big flood watching couples go in one after another for their june wedding. >> it's amazing, joe. this is a pretty well kept secret. there had to have been some planning this morning. somebody had to know to have the original couple there who filed the lawsuit, to have the attorney general there, to have people in place at san francisco city hall, something was going on we didn't know about. >> reporter: the couple got some word earlier today as they called the federal court to see what's going on and they said, hang on, there may be something by the end of the day. now, quickly, the timing on this is interesting. a lot of people in city hall are talking about is the fact it happened at 3:00 in the afternoon on a friday. means it was impossible for attorneys from the other side to file paperwork in anytimely fashion and the fact that they are doing weddings all weekend is they mistake. it allows all these weddings to take place making it more difficult to turn anything back if paperwork is filed monday which there is some expectation will happen. >> you talk about timing, too. you know, it's pride weekend. so, you know, the timing couldn't be better in some respects. and it's going on not only in san francisco but we had a clip a little while ago of the first marriage of the mayor of los angeles performing that one. thank you, joe vazquez. it's to prove to my family and to myself that worth fighting for. >> reporter: they live at the facility taking ged and life skills classes. they also get job training in construction and other industries. the director of men of valor says the main goal is to help these men develop a moral compass and work ethic. >> when you deal with a man mentally, physically, psychologically and spiriteddually. >> reporter: a few weeks ago they had a barbecue with oakland police recruits to team up and end the vicious cycle of violence. >> now giving back to my city and i done took so much from it so it seems like it's about time to give back. >> reporter: these men spent three to five months in the academy. the 30 or so people who started, 21 graduated thursday. >> here and there. times where like okay you might be overthinking this a little bit too much. but, uhm, but it's not a bad thing. >> i'm focused on really making a difference and wherever i'm supposed to be, we'll be there. >> reporter: the operation is still pretty small and right now the clothes are only available online but the company is holding a kickstarter campaign asking customers to contribute to get the gear into retail stores. devon calls it the next step. but what it really is, is doing everything different. in fremont, john ramos, kpix 5. doing things here hot. h-o-t. >> even as we languish in this air-conditioned studio very slowly and insidiously as high pressure is very quietly creeping over california until before you know it we are going to have numbers near 108 degrees tomorrow. it's the invisible culprit in all this and that's why at least excessive heat advisories in the south, east and north bays for temperatures that will exceed -- exceed 100 degrees this weekend. not at the beach, though, that's the good news. microclimates will be in full force and so if you need relief, head west. but in the east bay valleys and in the north and in the south bay, afternoon highs will range from the mid-90s to almost 110 degrees. but those numbers, the really hot, hot numbers, are down in the pinnacles and some of the isolated far inland valleys around brentwood. but check on kids and the elderly, make sure they have a plan to keep cool this weekend. right now concord 99 degrees. oakland has just 76. but look at livermore, even as we approach 7:00, it's 100 degrees at livermore at the airport 75. up in santa rosa, 93 degrees. and here's what we expect in the weather headlines. very hot. even warmer tomorrow. the high pressure is still building. it really is. it's going to be higher tomorrow than today. so will the numbers. hottest inland at 108 and will stay hot through tuesday. so the hot high pressure edges west we look for numbers to go near record highs. we probably won't hit records. it was even hotter than this back in 1934 when livermore got up to 109 degrees. we won't break records in the east bay. maybe some in the intermediate valleys though. san francisco on average looking at temperature of 67 this time of year, it will be 75. concord, livermore, san jose all in the mid-80s usually. as much as 17 degrees above average tomorrow. and it will be warm in the central valley too. 106 at redding. this time of the year you can just see all the water they pour on the rice crops evaporates in sheets with numbers that high. 105 degrees at sacramento. 110 at fresno. pinpoint forecast overnight lows tonight will be mild. 61 concord, 62 livermore. san francisco at 75. tomorrow very mild for folks coming to the city. down in san jose, 92 degrees. 9 degrees above average. concord at 101 tomorrow. elsewhere south bay looks to be 103 on east dunne avenue in morgan hill. los gatos 100. 91 santa clara. relief at the beach 67 degrees at half moon bay but 105 at brentwood. hundreds all through the 580680 corridors up in the north bay cooler than that. temperatures still warm though mid-90s, 94 in san rafael. and up in the far north 106 at windsor. extended forecast we get hot and stay hot. that's weird for the bay area. usually the sea breeze really rushes in and cools us down. not going to happen until tuesday. extended forecast though does show relief coming in on thursday and on friday. it's in the 90s over in san jose too where we find kpix 5's roberta gonzales in the mobile weather lab. >> reporter: hey, brian. yes, mobile weather traveled to the south bay outside san jose municipal stadium where the people are filing in for the 7:00 baseball game tonight. with me is dan, president and ceo of this fine minor league baseball team. first of all, tell me what makes this stadium so special and why are we wearing pink?
