[ applause and cheers ] reporter: the berkeley couple rushed to city hall and became the first same-sex couple to be married in the state since the decision. we were surprised that it was this quick but thrilled because really every day that goes by that gays and lesbians can t get married in the state of california is a day too many and it s about time that we re validated and the sooner the better and so proud of the state of california for making it happen immediately. it s amazing and we re grateful. reporter: and we want to take a live look from chopper 5 over castro and market, the epicenter of gays and lesbians in the nation. there s joy in the street once again. this happened so quickly. lightning fast. that ruling came down from the federal judge around 3:00 and by 5:00 the first same-sex couple in california was married. m
