Sproul plaza. Protestors setting off fireworks. Some of them aimed directly at police. They were standing by holding their ground. The crowd of about 1500 gathered in advance of the 7 00 event featuring ultraconservative speaker and author and breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos. Ucberkeley officials said the protest was infiltrated by vandals many of them covering their faces with masks. In addition to some of the fireworks being thrown on the second floor balcony, fires were lit outside of the venue including one that engulfed a gas powered portable floodlight. Some protestors started grabbing metal barriers police set out as crowd control and used them as weapons to break windows of the Student Union. Although, you know, it it could get violent or whatever, with the fires, thats what we believe, we suck thats what caused milo to leave. We succeeded. Reporter he did leave. Police demanded the crowd disperse at 7 00. But hundreds of people stayed, others moved the demonstration to city streets vandalizing more property including several off campus banks. The president tweeted about this overnight saying, if uc berkeley doesnt allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view, no federal funds . Question mark . So an obvious threat there. This is part of a statement sent out by the Berkeley CollegeRepublicans Group that organized this event with this conservative speaker reporter now, Berkeley Police say that there were four injuries reported most of them by infighting within the group. There was also a report of a possible hitandrun that somebody might have been hit and ended up on the hood of somebodys car. But again, they are still assessing what happened here last night. At one point police did fire tear gas and flashbang grenades to break up the crowd but for the most part, especially at the beginning of this protest, they stood back. One person who came out to watch Milo Yiannopoulos speak told us he was attacked and robbed by a group of protestors. When the protest got under way, Milo Yiannopoulos posted this on facebook another storm ing through the ba fter we had a couple days t t. And the winds will increase to 30 gusts to 50 around the coastal mountain areas and also our highest elevations so thats what that whole blue highlighted area that just encompasses the entire bay area. Southbound 880 after stevenson boulevard theres a twocar crash blocking the left lane with the backup to thornton avenue so youre driving in the area at 35 Miles Per Hour. So pretty slow conditions. Just give yourself extra time to get through there in fremont on southbound 880. To the south bay, northbound 85 this connector to northbound 87 theres still a twocar crash out there blocking the left and the right lanes of the connector ramp. 26 Miles Per Hour in the area. We have about a mile of backups in the area otherwise good throughout the south bay. In novato pockets of slowing here, as well. Valley christian junior high is this weeks cool school. Reporter these middle School Students at valley christian are getting hands on with science. We really believe getting kids inspired in stem early on is a huge benefit to getting them to know that stem and science and technology is great and even fun. Reporter using robots, software and even legos, this class is creating experiments that will eventually get launched to the International Space station. This is so cool. Coming in realizing the gravity of youre actually going to sending is to space, its an incredible feel. Reporter this years class is creating experiments to dispel heat effectively on the iss by building a unit to heat a light bulb and then cooling it down the most efficient way. So in the end, we are going to be able to gather data that we can maybe post back to nasa saying hey we found a more efficient way to dispel heat in microgravity a big trouble in the iss. Reporter last year they looked at how vibration affects metal in space. Once it was launched the students monitored the experiment from the classrooms. This is the satellite tracking station so this is where students come and monitor the iss right here. And in april, this years class is going to be launching their experiment into space. Im mostly excited. I cant wait to see the results in space and compare it to our data. Reporter the program through the Quest Institute includes every aspect of engineering. Programming, electrical, mechanical, project management, and team work. All of the things you would learn in a traditional company, these kids are learning before high school. And now you have a full class on what College Students would do down to the Elementary School level. At first i didnt like science. I was not as interested as any of the other people would be. Since the school has given me the opportunities, i have grown to learn to love science more and appreciate it. Type 1 diabetes is still the most common form in youth but we are seeing alarming growth in the number of kids with type 2 diabetes. Its certainly related to the rise in obesity. Unfortunately, many parents are unaware of this so their children are unaware. What are the other factors contributing . Type 2 diabetes runs in families. So does unhealthy eating habits and other lifestyle habits. As a mom of seven, this is just so concerning. What can we do to try to stop this . A great place to start is to develop a plan as a whole family. You certainly want to work on increasing water intake. You might have to work on that with your kids. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Certainly find ways to make Favorite Foods hier. Oo important. Are children who have parents with type 2 diabetes more likely to also develop it . Certa these things do run in families. But it also is important to know that if you establish these habits together, theyre much more likely to be sustained. Set a new norm as a family. I love that. Set a new norm. And australia may be in jeopardy after reports of a contentious phone call between President Trump and australias prime minister. President trump is upset about a onetime deal to transfer 1,000 refugees to the u. S. They are currently held in remote Detention Centers in australia unwanted by australia. Many of the refugees are from iran, iraq, sudan and somalia. Countries included in the president s travel ban. The agreement was negotiated during the obama administration. Meanwhile, two republican senators now say they will reject the president s nominee for education secretary betsy devos. Alaska senator Lisa Murkowski got an overwhelming number of calls from constituents. Their concern centers as mine do on mrs. Devos lack of experience with Public Education and the lack of knowledge that she portrayed in her confirmation hearing. Devos is a Charter School and voucher advocate as well as a major gop donor. She has dodged acquisitions of plagiarism and answered questions on educational philosophy. Susan collins of maine will also vote no. If one more republican votes against her and no democrats break ranks, devos would not be confirmed. And republicans are gearing up for a fight against democrats in their bid to confirm Supreme Court nominee neil gorsuch. Yesterday, President Trump suggested lawmakers use the Nuclear Option in order to push the nomination through. That would allow gorsuch to be confirmed with a simple majority of 51 votes in the Senate Rather than 60 votes. The full senate will vote on attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions after a Committee Hearing yesterday. All 11 republicans voted to advance sessions nomination. All nine democrats opposed him. The sfpd is suspects spending involvement with the fbis joint Terrorism Task force. The program raised concerns that local Police Departments will be asked to participate in illegal surveillance and Immigration Enforcement under the Trump Administration. The new chief has this to say about the decision. I just want to ensure the public that we are committed to public safety.
