Im anne makovec live in the newsroom following developments out of oakland where the city council made a bombshell decision this morning putting the next Police Academy on hold until they have a Better Process to weed out bad candidates. That goes back on pay goal set by libby schaaf who pledged to increase the number of Oakland Police officers to at least 800 by 2017. Well, now in the wake of a sex scandal and a rotating number of police chiefs, the council is delaying any new Academy Awards until may 2017 after an audit of the departments hiring practices. City Council Members say they want to see a culture change. The number of officers accused of Sexual Misconduct but the number who are alleged to have known about it and not done anything suggest that is we need fundamental culture change. In a statement schaaf said if we are inconsistent in how we staff our Police Department, we run the risk of jeopardizing the important games we have made. Right now, the department has no official chief. Its being run by the city manager, a federal monitor overseeing the hiring process for an interim chief. Anne makovec, kpix 5.
