Nothing in my life prepared me for my son being murdered. Reporter many came for deeply personal reasons. But this woman says she wanted to honor her son william who was savagely beaten and shot to death in november. I would say as a mother, you know, hug your kids, and you know, when you see them, and let them know that you love them, because you never know when Something Like this is going to happen. The bay areas antigun rally was one of 500 similar events in cities across the country. And inspired by the sandy hook massacre, and organizers say they are taking aim at common sense legislation that they believe would reduce gun violence. We are not here to take anyones guns away but here to say that convicted criminals and known Domestic Violence abusers should not have access to guns. Organizers say it is an important first step. Curbing the damage done by guns. Guns led to a murder in vallejo overnight. And police are trying to figure out why. And how. A shooting happened just after midnight. On corcoran avenue a half mile north of highway 37. When officers got there, they found evidence of a shooting but no victim. And they learned that a man had taken himself to a hospital and later died. Now detectives and crime scene investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened. And they would like to hear from any witnesses. Well, police had made an arrest in connection with the death of an australian tourist at a San Francisco hotel. The tourist died yesterday after getting into a fight outside the hotel on van es. Right now, police are not releasing any information on the suspect. New details now on the water debacle in south San Francisco. Thousands of residents have not been able to use their tap water. After vandals broke into a water Storage Facility. The water was just tested. And kpix 5 jackie ward is here to tell us whether it is safe to drink the water. Jackie . Reporter brian, the test results are in. It is good news for the people who live in this neighborhood of Sunshine Gardens. It is officially safe to drink. They have learned yesterday that it wasnt safe to drink originally thanks to this flier on their door. It was a steady stream of drivers all day. At Cal Water Service. People who live in the affected area needed to pick up bottled water to use this weekend. For some, it was less about their water usage and more about their safety. Im pretty sure that they are consistent with the testing and if they tell us that the water is safe to drink, then we should be okay. I worry about our safety, and especially my daughter. Hopefully, we are not all contaminated, i guess. Mark cal water says it is taking precautionary measures after the water tower that supplies 2,000 people was vandalized yesterday. Preliminary tests came back negative. Our employees are running pretty ragged but doing a great job and everyone is keeping a great attitude and people are pretty happy. A woman we spoke to who lives nearby told south San Francisco police that around 12 30 a. M. Yesterday, she heard loud male voices calling for bolt cutters. Because it was south San Francisco whom she spoke to, a detective did not initially know that information and colma police are handling the investigation because the water tank is still in their town limits. Whoever did this is still out there. I dont know why they would do that and the graffiti and there are so many people that rely on the water and they just kind of ruined it for everybody. So now that the water is safe to drink, Cal Water Service representatives will be going door to door in this neighborhood to let them know it is okay to drink, clean, and wash everything with this water. In south San Francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. Thank you. Frozen tuna already shipped to several bay area restaurants is being recalled. Health Officials Say it could be contaminated with the hepatitis a virus. The fda says the tuna was sourced from two companies in vietnam and the philippines. The San FranciscoEmbarcadero Center is one bay area restaurant with the tainted tuna and so did the phoenix restaurant in san rafael and also a bar and lounge in san carlos. Symptoms are jawnd is and stomach pain jaundice and stomach pain and it could take up to 50 days to feel sick. The water park in dublin is reopened. But the slide where the accident happened is still closed. Last saturday, a 10yearold boy flew off a slide called the emerald plunge and landed on the concrete floor next to it. He managed to walk away with only scratches. Cal osha is examining the slides configuration and water levels and that slide and two others are closed indefinitely. The new park called the wave did reopen today as planned and will stay open every day until mid august. New at 6 00, a controversial bill passed unanimously in the california assembly. It would require students and teachers to take classes on how to spot signs of Human Trafficking. A Pilot Program is already under way. But as lamar abrams reports, some say the program has no place in public schools. We are one of a handful of high schools in california that teaches Human Trafficking during sex ed. Teachers say students are so impacted they walk out of class, telling their friends. And critics argue classrooms should remain a place for academics. Actually shocked. A little bit scared. It started with a story of a 17yearold student from ponderosa high school, sex traffic from this tightknit town to the bay area. And Karen Norwood wanted her students to recognize the red flags. And super bubbly and outgoing and no longer is. And a student who is quiet and reserved and now is all flashy and out there. She now spends part of the school day teaching students about Human Trafficking. A curriculum based on interviews with survivors and traffickers. They are calm. They are listening. They usually leave with a purpose. And antitrafficking advocates who trained her are sponsoring a bill aimed to bring Human Trafficking education to 7th to 12th graders in all California Public schools. Three pieces here. The victim. The trafficker. And then there is the buyer. And Heather Hoffman leads the teacher training. What they knew going in and what they learned coming up. And High Schoolers surveyed before entering the program had no idea that students younger than them are lured from their normal lives and made into sex or work slaves. Results improve when students complete the course but the subject would come with a dollar sign. With millions of dollars for required training and many parents say it is a waste of time and money. These agencies are not teachers. Amy is a substitute teacher and volunteer with californias right to life movement. The nonprofit is currently lobbying against 45 bills in the state legislature, focused on some aspect of Human Trafficking. This is going to take away from academic time in the classroom. If we cant keep our kids safe, academics, it doesnt really matter. For now, the bill doesnt apply to Elementary School but it may change as it makes its way to the senate. Well, north bay Animal Rescue upping the reward money to catch a dog killer. Today a memorial was held for numerous dogs that were killed and dumped at vallejos Blue Rock Springs park in february. And the rescues are offering a 15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer, and they also want to draw attention to animal abusers and what their behavior leads to. The fbi has now created a database, for known animal abusers and killers that link to people that actually do this type of thing. The rescues want to remind people, if they witness animal abuse, they should report it to the police. In the east bay, Livermore Police are trying to put the brakes on a wave of car thefts. Last year, 292 cars were stolen. And so far this year, already 165. Livermore Police Expect this years total to surpass last years. Other theyre looking for a specific vehicle because they want to take the parts, perhaps the vehicle contains items of value. So they want to go ahead and steal those items as well. And other times it is a combination of the two. Livermore police have made 13 arrests, but the threats keep happening. And most of the stolen cars police say are eventually found abandoned. A new Warning System is being tested at the oroville dam. Four months after the main spillway collapsed. One blast at a time, crews continue to chip away at the damaged spillway to clear the way for a new one. And emergency sirens were tested yesterday afternoon to alert dam workers in case of another emergency. Meanwhile, experts say it is still too soon to say exactly what caused the main spillway to crumble. We believe that in all likelihood we are not going to find a single cause that caused this event. Normally, there are multiple causes. In february, nearly 200,000 People Living downstream from the dam were forced from their homes. And the main spillway, and the emergency spillway failed. A huge landslide in big sur is growing. And sky drone 5 shot the video during the week and Scientists Say the coast has expanded by 13 acres in the area and that is the size of 10 football fields. And thanks to the rock and dirt and debris that buried a stretch of the highway. And caltrans says it could take more than a year to reopen that stretch of the road. Still ahead a graduation of a different sort. Northern california inmates becoming drug counselors. And how they will use their new skills. And paving the way for self driving cars. As you know. And one ceremony was a little different from the others. It took place behind the walls of a vacaville prison. Angela tells us what the inmates accomplished. When one door close, another opens. [ applause ] today, 29 inmates of the California State Prison solano in vacaville walked across the stage and graduated. Feeling grateful. As state certified drug counselors. I havent smiled in 20 years. After 10 months, and 4,000 hours of intensive training and studying, these 29 inmates completed the offender mentor certification program. It is a bit overwhelming. And their families watched with pride. I am really excited for him. I am very, very proud of him. And it is hard to say that youre proud about someone that is in a prison, but i genuinely am. The program was created in 2009 by sal irving as a way to rehabilitate inmates. Most inmates will listen to another inmate before they listen to us. So far, about 300 of them have graduated. And so far, all have been a success. Our recidivism rate for this program is zero. Some of the men will be paroled and practice their drug abuse counseling skills outside prison wall, while others in for life, will mentor inmates in prisons across the state. They all say they are ready to give back. To help someone else. So they dont have to hurt as much as i did. Their diploma is representing determination and a lot of self reflection and at times, they say a painful journey, but more than anything, it is a symbol of a new start. In vacaville, angela greenwood, kpix 5. Police say that a teenaged boy is behind more than a dozen car burglaries. In the last week alone, a rash of car burglaries have hit bart stations across the bay area. Police say the young suspect they arrested broke into at least 16 cars. Including nine of the millbright station. And they say they caught the teenager in another minor breaking into a car in the daly city station on wednesday. He was able to take those two individuals into custody. As that progressed, they got more information, and learned that one of those juveniles, a teenaged boy, was the likely suspect for the breakin. Because the suspect, the minor, bart police are not releasing his name. An east bay bart station closure could slow you down this weekend. The warm springs south fremont station will be closed today and tomorrow. There will be a free bus bridge to and from the fremont station. Now, bart says passengers who use the bus should add 20 to 30 minutes to the travel time. And bart is testing new software for the Silicon Valley extension project. A rare sight off the shores of the Central Coast this week. Two groups of baredbeaked whales were spotted 10 miles southwest of carmel. Crew members of the monterey bay whale watch took video of the two pods last saturday. Marine biologist nancy black was able to identify them by their short puffy blow holes. Foreheads. And long beaks. Very rarely seen in this area. They are normally found quite far offshore. And they can hold their breath for up to an hour. So the chances of seeing them are pretty slim normally. Black says in the past 30 years she has only seen bared beaked whales, about 15 times. She believes the whales were following food. Just like we do as human beings. Yes. Good instinct. Yes. And blue skies around the bay area. Kind of seeing winds, too, out of the northwest to 20. And clear skies for now but the low clouds come back in along the shoreline tonight and tomorrow morning, it will translate into drizzle along the shoreline. But around the bay and inland tomorrow, it will be nice. And become sunny and start out with readings from 50 to 54 degrees. And later in the day, it is not going to be as warm tomorrow. With a forecast high near 80 degrees inland. And around the bay, upper 60s. At the shoreline not nudging 60. A few more clouds pack in along the shoreline and because of a trough that is over california, the High Pressure is going away, and it will be warm but not hot inland. And some numbers will come down about six degrees inland tomorrow. Here is why, the low pressure up in the gulf and the High Pressure is giving way, so it will cool a little bit before warming on monday. The future cast shows that we have cooler air on the way for the bay. And in general, with the High Pressure that is dominant, for a bit, it eases up and takes a break, but only for a day. And monday will warm up again. And so to sum it all up, tonight the low clouds come back in, a little bit of drizzle along the shoreline, not quite as warm for tomorrow. According to a new ucsf study. The bad news is that costs are soaring. Researchers say because more people are biking, more people are getting injured. And not a huge surprise. Medical costs are through the roof. Over 17year period, hospital admissions, because of bike crashes have increased 120 . Medical costs have increased 789 million each year. We do think that the findings illustrate that there is work to be done in terms of infrastructure and in terms of safety. During those 17 year studies, the researchers say there were 3. 8 million bike injuries. Wow. Always wear a helmet for sure. Yes. And andrea, youre here. Im here. Kent water distributed cases of water during the advisory. People who wore orange shirts marched across the Golden Gate Bridge demanding action against gun violence. The demonstration was one of 500 across the country today. Organizers say they want legislation that would limit access of guns to people with criminal records or history of Domestic Violence. And people in Great Britain, police in Great Britain are calling the violence in london a terrorist incident. A van ran over people on London Bridge and nearby at least one man stabbed multiple victims. Kpix susie has been talking with our local security expert about the attack tonight and live at vista point marin county. Susie . Good evening. Of course this is a very much developing incident at this point in time. But as you said, police and political leaders in london are using the word terror to describe what has happened over the past couple of hours there. And multiple fatalities are confirmed as well. If you look at the video, you can see it is a violent and chaotic night for People Living in and staying in london at this point in time. Police are investigating two separate incidents. The first is of course that vehicle that veered off of the roadway. And mowed down a number of pedestrians on the London Bridge. And shortly thereafter, there were reports of gunfire. And knife attacks at the nearby borough market. Police officers have been running into the streets and running into bars telling people to get down and shelter in place. They have made an arrest of one suspect. It is feared that another person is still on the loose at this point in time. Now, our special agent fbi special agent and kpix security analyst jeff harp tells us that police may come to conclusions more quickly in this case because of the heightened security after manchester. Law enforcement probably had eyes on a lot of people over there that they didnt normally have eyes on so and so what this tells me, that are probably a lot more cells operating over there. And this problem with the in numb of immigration, fighters coming back influx of immigration, fighters coming back from syria and iraq, it will be a continual problem. Reporter here in San Francisco, we talked to the Golden Gate Bridge authority as well and they tells that you security here has not been stepped up. But that it is always high in this location. Ariana grande made surprise visits to some of the young fans who were injured in the bombing and parents took photos of her hugging little girls in their beds at the royal manchester Childrens Hospital yesterday. The unexpected visit comes ahead of tomorrows benefit concert called one love manchester where she will perform with other big names in pop music. The concert will include sets by cold play, katy perry, pharrell williams, and black eyed peas. Authorities in the philippines released new video of a suspect torching gambling tables. 38 people were killed at a casino resort in manila. And the suspect fled with 2 million in stolen casino chips and forced his way into a room before killing himself. The resort is offering 20,000 to each the families who died in the fire. And the two agencies that help protect the nations coastlines are still without leaders. President trump is charged with appointing heads for National Oceanic and atmospheric administration, and the federal Emergency Management agency. Kpix 5 len ramirez has found one San Jose Company that is getting ahead of the park. Reporter this company is five miles away from the cal train station but the two are not well connected. And the mayor says Autonomous Vehicles or Driverless Cars could soon provide the missing link. A ton sequels are coming. And the question is when and how. And the mayor is sending out a request for ideas to the Autonomous Vehicle industry, much of it based in Silicon Valley. The idea is to lay out ground rules for Autonomous Cars but the where could be here, between the airport and the train station. We know it is a very expensive project by rail. It costs 800 million to build. And we dont have those kind of deals. We are looking at a vehicle with a solution. And it could be lanes or Driverless Cars blending into traffic and a second route between downtown san jose and santana row, which is usually heavily congested. Basic purpose would be to reduce collision and accidents and death on the road. And the other one is to reduce congestion on the road. San jose state Mechanical Engineering professor fred burres says san jose is the perfect test bed. 99 of the technology has been developed in Silicon Valley so we are the leader in that area compared to the rest of the country. His students are hacking radiocontrolled model cars to make them autonomous and may beat everyone else to the street. When i was 27 years old and founded jimmy choo i wanted to make beautiful shoes and i really didnt consider what it was to be a woman in the workplace. She was a major shareholder and the teams creative officer. But in reviewing paperwork, and private equity deals, she discovered she was getting paid less than the men who worked for her. It is very hurtful, actually, because my blood sweat and tears was in that company. She was the only woman on the board at jimmy choo and the board set her salary. She says she was told no to a raise. There is some irony there, right . That you are building a brand for women, with no women on the board. Isnt that crazy . That is i know, the craziest thing. And you know, if i could tell my younger self today, one thing, i would have said, you know, i would say, speak up. And normally, it takes british women 20 years to cross the ocean. She is speaking a lot these days as an advocate for equal pay for women. She recently spoke about her experience at the shatter summit at the battery club. Featuring influential bay area female entrepreneurs hosted by Venture Capitalist shelly laport colins. The problem is women need their own network. So men give to men. And now we need to take that and we need to facilitate a Girls Network if you will. Thats why she started the shatter fund in San Francisco last year. And it invests solely in women led businesses. Today, only 6 of all Venture Capital investors are women. And only 3 of investor funding is given to female founders. And when there is a woman involved in the Investment Decision making process such as i am, the female entrepreneur is 2 1 2 times more likely to get the capital that she needs to get her business. Just ask lin perkins, a San Franciscobased urban center. An ondemand app connecting parents with babysitters. When there are women investors in the room, it is a lot easier to sell the emotional part of what we are doing and why we are motivated. Colins invested 25 grand in lins startup which now serves 200,000 users nation wide. Now, there is a namesake shoe brand and e commerce shoe business, run by a female ceo. I pretty much have a female team, except for a few people. And we are very conscious how we build the culture and when i started jimmy choo, i didnt know what the culture was.
