Reporter the proposed plant is in an area zoned industrial but its just over a hill from homes and apartments and opponents have insisted dust from the factory would be hazardous to health. But they say their product makes 90 less Greenhouse Gases than normal cement and is in great demand by bay area builders to meet environmental standards. Some say its hypocritical to send them somewhere else. Though only want fastfood restaurants and no one is coming into town. Reporter john ramos, kpix 5. New at 6 00 reaction coming in after a guilty verdict in the trial of three Santa Clara County jail guards. Late today, they were convicted in the beating death of a mentally ill inmate. Kpix 5s len ramirez with the reaction outside the courthouse a short time ago. Len. Reporter well, it was a very dramatic finale to this trial. The three correctional deputies found guilty of seconddegree murder for the killing of mentally ill inmate michael tyree. Now, the jury did make that decision this afternoon. It was a very packed courtroom filled with the wives and the family members of the three defendants. Now, former deputies. During the reading of the verdicts, there were tears, people crying from the family members, the three defendants all dressed in suits then immediate taken into custody taken to the jail where this started in august 2015. The coroners report said tyree died of internal injuries after being beaten inside his jail cell. The case pointed out problems within the jail system and resulted in several reforms that are still ongoing such as cameras that are in the jail now. Were proud that justice was served and they are behind bars. Its a sad day when Law Enforcement officers are convicted when those who are sworn up to hold the law and protect others instead choose to victimize and in this case kill a mentally ill inmate. So its a very sad day. Its a day of justice. But its a day of sadness. Reporter the jury hung on counts 2 and 3 of the case which had to do with the beating of a separate inmate so the judge declared a mistrial on those counts. A seconddegree murder conviction to give them 15 years to life for each defendant involved. They were taken to Santa Clara County jail but because of their status as correctional deputies now former correctional deputies, they will likely be housed in a neighboring jail facility such as the santa rita jail in Alameda County until their sentencing which is on september 15. Mark peterson admitted that he broke state law hundreds of times between 2011 and 2015 by spending more than 66,000 in Campaign Cash on his personal expenses. The reading clinics served 56 students this school year at a cost of more than a Million Dollars. They say 20 of that is from transporting the students from their schools to the clinic. Its invaluable. I mean, you cannot get rid of it. Reporter this parent says her son, who has learning disabilities, can now read at his grade level. All thanks to the clinic. Instructors plan special reading lessons for the kids and provide around the clock attention. The program has been successful for so long. Its small, high intensity. We work two on one with the students. Reporter the district says they want to close the clinic and provide the same kind of service at the schools directly. They believe it would help more students and save money since the district is facing a multi Million Dollar budget deficit. Nickel and diming successful programs is not the way to solve it. Cutting your nose off to spite your face, that in the long run is may end up costing you money. Reporter they have been slowly removing special ed. Classes in the district to adopt the inclusion model putting special education students in mainstream classes. Reporter the Courthouse Square cost 10 million and took a year to build but only took a few minutes to mar. It was a little shocking and frustrating at the same time. They thought they were buying some paint that was chalk based and not necessarily paint. But unfortunately, it appears that what they bought was paint that was chalk like.
