Reporter thats right. The fire is out. But take a look here. The fire started in a first floor unit and the flames quickly spread to the second floor damaging more units on the second floor. A lot of damage in the apartment complex. It has at least 10 units. Now, firefighters say the two alarm fire started just before 5 a. M. On roosevelt avenue a few blocks away from downtown berkeley. All the residents were evacuated in this building and the buildings nearby. In fact, some of the folks didnt have a chance to even grab their clothes. They just started running out. We understand according to the firefighters, two people were treated for injuries. They also say the proximity of this fire to the Fire Department helped them knock out the blaze fast. Literally looked out my Office Window when i heard the call came in and saw the smoke amend flames from my office in the Public Safety building. We were close by and knocked it down quickly before it got bigger. Reporter some of the units are so badly damaged, the families will not be allowed to return. New at 6 00 a tiny object caused a big backup at the port of oakland this afternoon. Longshoremen at a busy terminal walked off the job for hours after discovering a small noose. They say its part of a larger problem at the port. Melissa. Reporter yeah, veronica. Were here at the Oakland InternationalContainer Terminal at the port of oakland. And theres plenty of activity here at all times day and night but this morning for several hours, everything came to a standstill when about 100 longshoremen walked off the job. At issue was a noose found on the seat of one of the trucks that the workers use to move around the terminal. Derek mohammad is the second treasurer secretarytreasurer of Longshoreman Union 10. About 60 of its americans are black. This morning another member of our local discovered a hangmans loose inside excuse me, a hangmans noose inside a truck on the terminal and so this is the third incident within six months but the second incident within two weeks. Reporter in november, a racial slur the n word was painted on a piece of equipment. And then just two weeks ago a hangmans noose was found on a fence near the entrance. Now this. Quite naturally, that produces a feeling of uneasiness, um, fear, discomfort, um, safety. And so our members asserted their right to work in a safe environment. Reporter sfa marine is the Management Company that runs this port. And their Spokesman Says they were not aware of any prior incidents. They also told us that the noose was small, about the size of a key chain. After the walkout this morning, an arbitrator was called and he said it was not a threat to health and safety and ordered the workers back to work after lunch and will be docked for the pay on strike. Longshoremans work is dangerous, muhammad says, and they have to know their coworkers have their backs. Now Muhammad Said the Security Camera that might have caught the person doing this was not working at the time. And we just learned from the unions president that sfa marine has agreed to fix those cameras inside and also agreed to put up a reward for information leading to the identification of the perpetrator. He described watching ciancio spiral out of control. 10 or 15 feet from the ground, he finally cut away from his mains which suggested to me that maybe he was unconscious for most of that. Came to consciousness not knowing what was happening and instinctively went to emergency procedures but by then it was too late. Reporter they had been flying together in their wing suits for more than two years. He says his friend was an experienced jumper and believes his main parachute failed causing it to open too fast. Youre going 120 miles an hour. And so that could be stopped in an instant gives your body a huge shock. Possibly a hard opening of his main parachute. By the time he was able to, um, um, release the main parachute to try to initiate emergency procedures he was too low to the ground. Reporter what could cause the parachute to have a hard opening . More than likely it was an error in the packing or possibly his body position as he deployed. Reporter crouch says its uncommon for a hard opening to knock a skydiver out. The first lawsuit has been filed in the wake of a deadly botulism outbreak blamed on cheese sauce. So this is rubbing a lot of people the wrong way here in milpitas because this field has a history of being open. Since it was renovated its been locked. Now people want it unlocked. They are some of the best sports facilities around. Fields of dreams for football and soccer encircled by a running track all of it kept in nearly pristine condition by the city of milpitas. But if you try to use them, be prepared for a lockout. We are Walking Around the whole field trying to find and entry. About noon today, four male suspects in black hoodies ran into the apple store on main street, cell phone video you see it right there shows them grabbing laptops and devices. And they are still on the loose. Surveillance video from the store on Chestnut Street in San Francisco shows suspects storming in and grabbing apple products there. It happened in just a couple of seconds. In recent months, there have also been robberies at apple stores in berkeley, burlingame and palo alto. New at 6 00 a report that could kill the fitness tracker trend a new study says they are not that accurate. So these fitness trackers are good and they are getting better. So much so that the heart rate monitor on these are fantastic. They are actually close to medical grade. The bad news is, the calorie counting is way off and if you are using this to control your diet, beware. To see some of the results firsthand, we bought one of the more popular brands a fitbit, and tested it for ourselves. After going up a few flights of stairs and Walking Around a few minutes, the fitbit said i covered a total of. 6 miles. It says i have burned 871 calories. No. You buy that . Definitely not. [ laughter ] reporter dr. Michael matson says i probably burned just 65 calories. He should know. He is one of the coauthors of a stanford study looking at the accuracy of smartwatches. They examined 7. 60 people worked out wearing the watches while also wearing a clinical grade device to measure caloric output and compare the results. But you know when we looked at the calories burned they were far off. Most of the time. Between 20 and 90 off. Reporter dr. Ashley is the lead author of the study and declined to rank the watches but would say the median error rate of the fitbit was 27 . But the other was 93 . The researchers say the danger in overreporting the number of calories burned is that people use this to justify a treat or end every indulging themselves. I have burned more than 1 knee calories by doing nothing basically. They go to the gym and burn 400 calories and say okay ive got that completely so they grab food. Police say the ulock attacker is this man, 28yearold eric clanton, a former part time professor at Diablo Valley College. A campus Spokesman Says among the philosophy classes he taught included introduction to ethics. We are mostly at Diablo Valley College received hundreds of phone calls and emails concerned about hiring and the fact that we have someone like this in front of our students potentially dangerous. They say aside from this attack cell phone video show him hitting multiple Trump Supporters in the head injuring at least three people. Police say finding the ulock attacker was such a priority they assigned homicide detectives to the case. This is happening near the downtown area. Shipping pallets are fueling these flames. Crews forced to fight the fire from the perimeter. Black smoke from this one can be seen for miles. I want to show you video from minutes ago. The fire was burning so hot it jumped across one street. The flames engulfed one home at least. Firefighters couldnt do anything about it. Instead they tried to put water on a house next door. No word on injuries or the cause of the fire. Several goats were injured after a fire started on a hillside near milpitas. You can see the herd running away as they ran from the flames. Some were treated with oxygen masks. Six acres were flames. It may have been started by an electrical transformer that exploded. President trumps sonin law Jared Kushner is now the focus of an investigation. The Washington Post is reporting that they are looking into a series of meetings between kushner, the Russian Ambassador and a banker from moscow of the post reported last week that a senior white house official close to the president was a significant focus of the investigation. Reporter the Fourth Circuit court of appeals in virginia today refused to lift a court order block on the ban targeting six muslim countries. Chief judge Roger Gregory wrote the ban, quote, speaks with vague words of National Security but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus and discrimination. In a 103 decision the court rejected the governments claims that the travel ban was designed to keep the country safe citing president trumps own call for a muslim ban during his president ial campaign. The ruling means citizens from iran, libya, somalia, sudan, syria and yemen will continue to be allowed into the united states. Reporter its a room known as the south witchs cap one of 40 rooms in the Winchester Mystery House open to the public for the first time today. I know that there are several people who would love to have a seance in here. Reporter the third floor corridor is one of many areas of the house said to be visited by ghosts. Sometimes youll hear someone which is sper your name. Reporter this is going to be the first time that tourists are actually allowed in the front door of the Winchester Mystery House. Word is that sarah win cherster didnt want anyone to see it because it wasnt furnished. Theres a story about Teddy Roosevelt knocking on the door and she wouldnt let him in. Reporter and in the north wing you can see remnants of damage and artifacts from the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The mystery house is about topeka lot more interest. The story of Sarah Winchester is now being produced as a film starring actress helen mirren. This house is a manifestation as of Sarah Winchester and i think in that sense its haunted.
