Storms roll through, roberta. It was really exciting. It was very exciting because we had a couple different elements going on. First the cold front and then all that subtropical moisture and when they came together, it produced one of the biggest storms of the year. You had to go back to march 11 to find something with significant rainfall like what we experienced yesterday. And, um, it looks like yesterday we did see up to 7 inches of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Wow. We saw up to 9 inches of rain in the venado area, which is a little suburb and thats just about 11 miles west of healdsburg. The computer is giving me some problems and i have to go back and requeue it. So if you want to take a look at it now you know what . I had to reboot this computer a couple of times yesterday because it was the hardest working computer in the entire west coast. [ laughter ] it really was. Now, when is the last time youve heard an ebs system go off . The emergency broadcast system. And on kcbs radio three different times did i hear that because of flood warnings in the north bay and over the loma fire area and the soberanes fire and that area saw 7 of rain yesterday. As you look at the sevenday forecast, whats going on now is we have the cooler air mass thats filtering in behind the passage of yesterdays cold front. If you notice those temperatures today, only into the 50s across the board. All the way through the weekend. All the way through the first day of winter on wednesday. We are settling into a cold weather pattern. All right. Thank you. Oh. All right. How are the roads looking . From there to the roads, we have problems on the roads. High winds everywhere pretty much throughout the bay area starting here with the bay bridge toll plaza. A little cash lane backup but otherwise looking good if you have your fastrak going on. From carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 18 minutes. And then in San Francisco, southbound 280 alemany boulevard offramp it was closed and it just opened. We got reports in a couple of minutes ago so that should be all good. If you are moving into the peninsula across the span of the san mateo bridge, expect high winds, as well. 880 to 101 should take about 14 minutes. And also, in the Santa Cruz Mountains area bear creek road at Ralston Ridge is closed all morning due to the storm so well let you know if that opens up. If you are taking mass transit we suggest do you that because although the storm is gone, those wet roads can still give you some problems here. Art, ace train, muni and caltrain are all on time. Ill send it to you. All right, roqui. Thank you. New video shows a man getting rescued from the side of a cliff. This was in San Francisco on seacliff avenue at 1 a. M. Neighbors heard the man calling for help and called police. It took firefighters about an hour to pull that man up. He was checked out at a nearby hospital is expected to be okay. The Rainy Weather and slick roads factored in several bay area vehicle accidents. Around midnight firefighters went to the east side for a collision at capitol expressway and cunningham. A car crashed into a traffic light pole. Crews needed the jaws of life to get a woman out. She and another person were brought to the hospital. No word yet on their conditions. Elsewhere, at least 6 vehicles and a fire hydrant were involved in a collision in San Francisco last night. This happened just after 11 00. 20th avenue and lincoln way, two people were brought to the hospital and several others were treated at the scene. The storm caused a lot of damage all across the bay area. Overnight, a massive tree fell onto the roof of this home in Portola Valley. Crews were called to the scene at 1 a. M. And firefighters say one person was home at the time. They are forced out until a building inspector can check it. No one was hurt. In East Palo Alto, some trees caused a lot of damage outside of this home. This happened on beech street. Crews say a tree snapped and fell on two cars. In the Santa Cruz Mountains, the storm sent giant rocks and boulders crashing down on to highland way creating a slushy muddy mess. And we were there as county workers worked to clear the narrow winding road. And bear creek road at Ralston Ridge is closed due to the conditions. Officials warn the ground in that area is unstable and runoff from the wildfire could increase the threat of mudslides and erosion. A stretch of highway 1 in west marin was closed yesterday after being overloaded with water. This is in the olema area north of bear valley road. It has since reopened. Also in sonoma county, lakes popping up where highway 121 meets highway 12. The water has since receded but it did shut down lanes in both directions. And in graton, even these pickup trucks could not power through the flooding. Green valley road, the driver went in reverse following the old saying, turn around, dont drown. During the storm we saw some of the highest tides of the see zone. The embarcadero was coned off, check it out, in this video. You can see some of that water crashing against the piers. Pg e is working to restore power after this storm. Upwards of 1500 people in surrounding counties here without power. No word on when that will be restored to everyone. President elect donald trump [ pause ] president elect donald trump will stop in florida today. Its live tv. Anything can happen. Today uber resumes its talks with the dmv over self driving cars on city streets. Kpix 5s Sandra Osborne reports from San Francisco. Reporter the whole thing is because uber did not have a permit. The interesting thing about all of this is that it would actually be pretty easy for the company to get a permit. In fact, the dmv tells us 20 other companies in San Francisco already have them. But uber maintains they are exempts from it because they have safety Drivers Behind the wheels at all times. They already have a Pilot Program in pittsburgh thats rolled out with this Driverless Car Program out for months. That Company Maintains that the program is in a testing phase and they say it isnt ready to be completely driverless at this time and thats why they dont need the permit. The Autonomous Cars hit the streets in San Francisco wednesday before the state stepped in. This isnt the first time uber has clashed with the state of california. It falls in line with ubers m. O. , they this is what they have done with a lot of products they have launched including their initial launch in San Francisco in 2010. They got cease and desist letters from the state. Reporter while San Franciscos mayor has asked them to hit the brakes until they get a permit, sacramento is encouraging the company to test Driverless Cars in their city. And by the way, if they did want to get a permit, how difficult would it be . Well, im told it would cost about 150 bucks and would take about 2 days. Thanks, roberta. Police trying to track down a gunman and two accomplices who raided a marin county jewelry store. It happened yesterday afternoon at juliannas fine jewelry at village after corte madera. Police say three men were wearing hooded sweatshirts and surgical masks. They ordered everybody to the floor and one man smashed a glass display case. The suspects quickly took off, jumped over a fence and got into a waiting car on the shoulder of highway 101. For months, somebody was spraypainting chickens on to all kinds of spaces in downtown san rafael. Now cops believe they finally found the man with the aerosol can. This farm animal has popped up 11 times on both city and private buildings for the last three months now. But police have just taken a 41 yearold suspect into custody. They say he had a can of spray paint in his hand at the time of his arrest. A Washington Police officer is in Critical Condition this morning after being shot in the head last night. Authorities ended up in an hours long standoff with the suspect as he continued to shoot at them from inside a home. Eventually, he was taken into custody. The officer who was shot was responded to the home about another incident but investigators dont know the exact motive for that attack on the officer. He is out of surgery and in stable but Critical Condition this morning. The mass exodus in syria could be winding down. Thousands of people have left the city of aleppo. They took advantage of a cease fire agreement in which the last rebelheld part of the city was basically surrendered to the syrian government. Now, russian officials claim all women and children have been taken out of eastern aleppo. They say that Syrian Military is conducting a final sweep to clear out any rebels remaining in the city. Its going to feel colder for you today plus a bit of a northwest wind to 20 during the afternoon hours. Right now 17 in San Francisco. 20 in oakland. And around the estuary of oakland also the port of oakland. Tenmileperhour winds in hayward. 11 redwood city. Basically about 10 to 20mile perhour winds as you head on out the door and that adds a little bit of a chill to the air. Heres the deal. This big bad frontal band is out of here after producing up to 9 inches of rain in venado which is roughly about just 11, 12 miles outside of healdsburg. Meanwhile, the core of the center of the area of low pressure still offshore and thats where you can see a pop up shower but not for us. Computer models suggest thats going to take a nosedive to the south but the front is out of here leaving us with some great rainfall. In fact, look at the north bay. Were 85 above average. 25 in San Francisco. And 44 above average in many of our inland locations. When we have the rain here, translates to snow. It first started off at rain at 6,000 feet but now its all snow. The current air temperature in the tahoe area is at 30 degrees. Only going up to 33 today. Periods of snow and wind. Tomorrow will be a dry day, great day to hit the powder but we still have the Winter Weather warning in effect if you are traveling today. Alpine meadows its time for a snow report, you have some powder. So far no new snow reported there. But you got up to two feet expected above 8,000 feet elevation. North star has picked up 8 of snow above 8,000 feet. And its still snowing there, as well. Be mindful, you need the chains heading to the high sierra. Our temperatures today, cooling off. In fact, were in a cool weather pattern now with the passage of that cold front. Temperatures only into the 50s. Kpix 5s maria medina live in East Palo Alto where we understand some cars are damaged, maria . Reporter yeah, anne. You know, id like to say im taking a stroll through the woods this morning. [ laughter ] but unfortunately, this is a massive tree that has fallen on to someones front yard and unfortunately, down on not just one car but two cars and if we pan over and zoom right behind this red car, youll see that second car and its taken out both of the back windows. And it looks like this tree was actually from the neighbors yard so you can see all the damage here left behind by just this one massive tree. And that is not all. Take a look at this video in Portola Valley that just happened just a few hours ago about 1 30 this morning when a tree hit a home forcing a person in the home out. No one was hurt in both of these incidents but yeah, yesterdays storm really causing a lot of damage out here. Power outages, trees down, and as you can see, with this tree, im going to try to walk towards you guys without poking my eye out, you know, we have seen it with these drought stricken treat over the last few years when theres a storm, i mean, these are really just dry branches that snap right off. So a little bit of wind and rain, this is what happens. Live in East Palo Alto, maria medina, kpix 5. Some downed trees caused damage in san anselmo. Some branches snapped and fell on to a house. Fire officials hit some electrical wires. They told neighbors to shelter in place while they checked out the situation. It has fallen on to a structure. We believe its just a garage but its collapsed the garage on cars inside. There may be a gas leak, as well. So were all staged, um, wait for confirmation from pg e that there are no live wires and no gas leaks so its safe to enter. At last check, there were three outages in san anselmo. Theres no word when it will be restored. Now to the east bay. Heres time lapse video from Jack London Square that a picnic table suddenly found itself in quite a heavy puddle as heavy rain came down for hours. Check out this waterfall in the middle of berkeley. Far more forceful than usual. This creek looks like whitewater rapids. Hey, roberta. That was amazing, wasnt it . I got to tell you honestly i walked into my, um, my gym last night, club sport, last evening in pleasanton. People started clapping. It wasnt it for me. It was because of the storm. They said that storm got some respect. [ clapping ] right . We havent seen anything like that until march 11 to see that kind of rainfall in the bay area. When you couple in the winds associated with that, you have to go back years. And we did have heavy rain up to 7 of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. And we saw over 9 of rain okay, theres this little town called venado about 11, 12 miles due west of healdsburg. Very reliable weather source. We went there. They reported over 9 inches of rain. How about that . All right. Lets check our live hidef Doppler Radar. Right now for the First Time Ever in my life, im actually looking at this saying, im happy to see no green on the screen. [ laughter ] its true because you know what . We really do need today to dry out to really absorb all that rainfall. Right now were looking out towards the Golden Gate Bridge, the pavement is dry. Temperaturewise, we have dipped into the 40s and low 50s. It is now 42 in santa rosa. It is in the high 40s redwood city oakland and also San Francisco. Mid40s in throughout the tri valley. The winds have been up to 20 this morning. So in addition to temperatures in the 40s, you factor in a wind up to 20, around the estuary of oakland, boy, it feels raw out the door this morning. Check out san rafael. 24mileperhour winds, sfo 23. These winds will continue to blow throughout the day today out of the northwest so they will rotate 10 to 20 miles per hour. Currently 15mileperhour winds at vallejo, benicia, martinez all the by in a concord, clayton and walnut creek. All the way into concord, clayton and walnut creek, 18 trivalley. So watch that again. Front is out of there. We do have some clouds lingering. These clouds are going to continue to wipe away to the south revealing ample sunshine today. But with the passage of that cold front, we have a lot of cold air thats spilling into the bay area. Remember, this cold air generated into the gulf of alaska, temperatures today barely anywhere between 52 degrees in the trivalley, 52 with the wind up to 20 to the mid50s around the bay but check this out. Tonight, overnight lows 27 degrees in santa rosa. 39 degrees in pacifica. 40s around the bay. Well have your full forecast, thats still coming up at 48 after the hour. Michelle . All right, roberta. Thank you. If you are heading to the airports today, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to. The storm caused a lot of problems at sfo yesterday and it could impact some flights today. This is what it looked like yesterday. At least 130 flights were canceled and delays were running up to 4 hours. We talked to one family who was trying to fly back home to australia. To be honest with you, i didnt think the weather was that bad at all. I have flown through snow, storms, before. So i was rather taken aback when we arrived here and there was so many cancellations and delays. So again if you are heading to the airport, be sure to check your flight status. Officials recommend getting to the airport at least two hours early, anne. [ laughter ] right now, the roads leading in and out of Yosemite Valley are closed. The National Weather service has issued a winter storm warning plus a Flash Flood Watch for the area. Yosemite officials will decide at some point today when to re open those roads. And the high country also dealing with a lot of rain. This is what it looked like in the sierra last night. So slick, officials had to put the chain laws into effect. We normally seem to get more snow than than at this time of year. This years been really wet. A lot of rain but not a whole lot of snow. If you are planning to head up, check chain controls. They are in effect this morning in the mountains and Officials Say it could be slick for several days. Well, the commute here a concern this morning as the roadways are still wet. Yeah, roqui has been tracking traffic conditions all morning. Yes. Thank you, michelle and anne. Luckily, we havent had any many crashes to report this morning. So thats the good news. But we do have some closures and some slow traffic to worry about as youre heading out. Heres a look at the dublin interchange from the Altamont Pass to 680, that will take you about 15 minutes. And the Altamont Pass youre driving at about 35 miles per hour. Moving over now to the high wind advisory trend across the bay area, starting with the san mateo bridge, from hayward to foster city, you will want to keep both hands on the wheel and make sure youre giving yourself enough space between cars here. 880 to 101, 14 minutes. Across the span of the bay bridge, you have toll metering lights on right now backing traffic up and also another high wind advisory from 80 westbound from carquinez bridge to the maze 20 minutes. And then expect about a 10 minute drive through the toll plaza. Now another look at the Richmond San Rafael bridge, the toll plaza looking pretty good right now. But guess what . Theres a high wind advisory across the span of that bridge, as well. And then another high wind advisory across the Golden Gate Bridge from marin if you are heading into San Francisco. That will be a 14minute drive between 580 and the golden gate toll plaza. Now, if you want to avoid the roads this morning, because i do suggest you do, there are still wet roads to worry about here, bart, ace train, muni and caltrain are all on time. Ladies . Thank you. Today uber continues its talks with the dmv after state officials called out the startup over selfdriving cars hitting city streets. The company, uber, says they are actually exempt from getting a permit because they have safety Drivers Behind the wheels with the Driverless Cars at all times. But the dmv maintains that they actually do need a permit or theyre going to have to hit the brakes in San Francisco when it comes to the Autonomous Cars. Now, uber has this Program Going in pittsburgh for a couple of months. Even in pittsburgh they have the safety Drivers Behind the wheels. But because uber says this program isnt ready yet to be completely autonomous, they dont need that permit for it. The dmv sails this kind of response is un says this kind of response is unprecedented saying it would be easy to get a permit. Now other cities are jumping in trying to get uber to test Driverless Cars elsewhere like sacramento. We want sacramento to be the hotbed for Companies Seeking to develop Driverless Cars technology. Reporter dmv officials plan to be in talks with uber again today. But so far, they have not reached a resolution. They say about 20 other Companies Already have the permit needed. And if you are wondering what exactly it takes to get one of those permits, well, the dmv says they have already been working with uber on other things before. Transportation officials are considering raising the toll on the bay bridge to nine dollars. A recent meeting reportedly centered on adding as much as 3 to the toll on our seven staterun bridges. Only the golden gate would be exempt. The change could spell roughly 381 million in revenue. But voters would have to approve the toll increase through a ballot measure for it to be implemented. The department of education is starting an experiment in student loan counseling. 60 of College Students take out loans to finance their education. 150billion in Student Loans are delinquent. 51 colleges and universities nationwide will participate. The government wants know if more counseling helps students make more informed decisions and better understand their obligations. Longterm mortgage and Interest Rates have surged in the weeks since Donald Trumps election victory in november.
