There are rallies planned around the country today an in San Francisco protestors are declaring a renters state of emergency and demanding an end to rising reynolds, evictions and gentrification rents, evictions and gentrifications. Properties are expensive averaging about 3,400 across our fivecounty region. The bay area has added more jobs than the current Housing Stock can support and San Francisco is the costliest rental market in the country. The savior for a lot of people is rent control meaning landlords can only raise rents less than 2 a year. Those whose apartments dont qualify are subject to inflated rent where only about 15 of people can afford market rate housing according to senator mark leno. So when were talking about Affordable Housing needs, were talking about all of us. Only 10 or 15 are exempt from the need of Affordable Housing, meaning below market rate housing. Right now, police in concord are looking for the suspect who walked into a home and shot the couple inside. It happened around 10 00 last night on bella near clayton. We talked to one neighbor who says she heard gunshots and then a car speeding off. I think its terrible. We just moved here and our neighbors are so wonderful and everyone is like family to us and just have something happen so close it really hits home. We are told the man is in critical condition. No description of suspects or their car. The coast guard is helping investigate an awful stench that blew through vallejo and the possible link to oil sheens on san pablo bay. About the same time hundreds of people called 911 to report the odor on tuesday evening. Two oily sheens were also discovered. One surrounded the shipping vessel yumana spirit in rodeo. Both sheens have disappeared. Its possible it dispersed in the water but thats going to take more investigation. Samples of the oily substance were collected. Coast guard scientists are studying those samples trying to determine what the substance was and whether it caused the foul smell. Meanwhile, Ferry Service to and from vallejo which had been suspended is expected to operate as normal today. New concerns this morning about fish caught off the louisiana coast six years after the bp gulf oil spill. Millions of dollars of recovery money was supposed to make sure fish was safe to eat. But state auditors say the money was misspent on ipads, cameras, boats and now missing fishing equipment. The Louisiana Legislative Auditors Office describes the Safety Program as so mismanaged by the department of wildlife and fisheries that it couldnt even declare if the catch was fit to eat. Reporter trent and malcolm remember this 11yearold boy who stood out. I have never seen anybody worked that hard. He was so thankful. It was cool just to see how grateful they are for everything. Its great talking to him and working with him and him it was just like sharing his story with his family and how were able to help them and give them a house. A lot of these people are so broken and they are not used to feeling loved or compassion but i think being able to welcome them it opens up their hearts to do good. Reporter the Kings Academy started the service trip back in 1993. Only 27 students and adults went. The project has blossomed since then building 340 homes averaging 16 to 17 houses each year. All these experiences really i think build in to kids and give them some lasting values and skills and confidence as they are charging into life. All of our students and staff get involved. Thats the best part is seeing all of us go out together to serve and every year we have new trips that were offering and more students that are signing up to go to the different trips. Reporter the students fundraise during the school year to pay for supplies which cost upwards of 5,000 per home. What they get back is priceless. You get to spend time with your classmates and you just get to, like, know things that you didnt know about them before because you get to spend so much time with them. Were privileged here in the bay area. The lots of opportunities here that people dont get so its great to kind of, like, humble yourself and be able to go out and help other people and share gods love with them. They have 6 International Trips each year, four domestic including one near sunnyvale so they have a lot of options and a lot of Different Community service opportunities. I think its so cool that they are raising money for all the supplies and then they go down and get their hands dirty. Its a yearlong effort and they go on their trips about a week before easter. A lot of people get involved. The faculty and the parents in that Community Get involved more than 700 people went on that trip last year. They are doing some good things. Take a look behind me. You can see vandals ransacked this store. Meantime, we also have seen officers here heavily armed still trying to maintain order. Reporter the chaos in charlotte stretched well into the overnight hours as protestors faced off with heavily armed officers. Tear gas filled the air and at least one flashbang exploded. [ screaming ] reporter the scene played out as anger over the Deadly Police shooting of keith scott spilled on to the streets for a second night. About an hour earlier, students and faculty received a text alerting them to take shelter and avoid campus. Police say a fight near campus led up to shots being fired. The men in this surveillance photo were reportedly seen grabbing a suitcase holding a Pressure Cooker bomb in new york on saturday. But they left the device behind.
