Potentially dangerous storm. Some parts of the bay area. Live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. Tonight this is just the start of a potentially dangerous storm. Some parts of the bay area are under a Flash Flood Watch right now and the strongest round of rain is yet to come. Good evening. Im ken bastida. Im elizabeth cook. Joe vazquez is in the north bay tonight, but first kpix5 chief meteorologist paul deanno. Right on cue, guys, the steady to heavy rainfall is moving in and will be with us the next 10 to 12 hours. Its going to be a long night for rainfall. Looking at very heavy rain along the marin and santa rosa coastline, fairfield, vallejo with steady to heavy rainfall and the yellow is steady to heavy rainfall in the Santa Cruz Mountains with rain heading towards san jose and los altos, albeit lighter, on the other side of the mountains. Thats a three hour time lapse showing all the rain and mountain snow piling into Northern California from eureka tout so monterey. South to monterey. The morning commute will be very sloppy on 680 and 880 between oakland and san jose, all this adding up to a Flash Flood Watch for the north bay, the north bay mountains, the coastline and the Santa Cruz Mountains and increased mudslide threat that will be quite stormy out there and windy with the wind advisory in effect through the night. We could see some 50 mileper hour gusts. Add it all up, a lot of rain, wind, significant problems possible tonight and early tomorrow. Well talk more about how much rain we can expect this week coming up. Kpix5s joe vazquez is in mill valley tonight. Joe, is it coming down there yet . Reporter it is, ken. In the north bay experiencing again the brunt of this storm. Weve just learned from the National Weather service, in fact, that theres a Flood Warning along the napa river in napa as well as st. Helena and here in mill valley these wind gusts just came out of nowhere the last half hour or, so pretty strong gusts. Its been a moderate rainfall all evening. About anotheranother round of rain. Its all good another round of rain. Its all good. Reporter another day of high water and umbrellas. It is really good i have to say. Its been really kind of oh, again. Reporter yes, again. Its not exactly cats and dogs. Still it can become a problem. For example, this large tree fell in mill valley earlier today. It took work crews hours to clear it off the roadway. Also tons of rock and debris crashed down on highway 152 west of gilroy triggering this muddy mess. They dont think it will be reopened until friday on. A normal day a moderate friday. On a normal day a moderate rainstorm like this wouldnt cause much impact because the ground is like this dry sponge. When you pour water on it, the sponge absorbs the water, but because of all the recent storms the ground is now like this wet sponge. Add water and it just doesnt absorb very much. Thats whats causing runoff and the minor flooding on roadways and creeks. Take a look at the normally docile los gatos creek. Its now turning into the mississippi. Theyve opened the floodgates at the reservoir. Even the trails are flooded. We come down here and walk sometimes. It looks like today wed have to swim. When it rains, people want it to stop. When it doesnt rain, people want rain. Make up your mind. Keep it coming. The snow melt, well have water, swim in the swimming pool, water the gardens. Its all great. Reporter what do you say to people who are tired of it . Get a life. We need the rain. More to come. The National Weather service said theres a Flood Warning in effect along the napa river. Its expected to rest tomorrow afternoon. It is not expected to get anywhere near as high as it did last month. In mill valley gavials questions, kpix5 am. Tonight joe vazquez, kpix5. Tonight the white house tried to clarify the president s remarks. It said some terrorist attacks dont get enough media attention. The white house also released a list of 708 attacks it blamed on 78 attacks it blamed on isis. Tonight the president tweeted the threat from radical islamic terrorism is very real. Right now there are no protesters here at sfo and there really havent been since a washington judge suspended the president s travel ban. Now it all hangs on a ruling from the u. S. 9th Circuit Court of appeals hearing tomorrow. From the airports to the courtroom tonight the battle over the travel ban now republicans with the United States court of appeals for the 9th circuit in San Francisco. Tomorrow both sides will get 30 minutes to make their case by phone. Lawyers from washington and the Appeals Court not to reinstate President Trumps travel ban saying it would strand our university students, faculty and barring travel. In a flurry of legal filings the Trump Administration says the ban is necessary to protect national security. Unlike the president , courts do not have access to classified information about the threats posed by terrorist organizations operating in particular nations. The efforts of those organizations to infiltrate the United States or gaps in the vetting process. Today President Trump defended his executive order. We need strong programs. So that people that love our country are allowed in. Reporter yesterday nearly 100 Companies Including big Silicon Valley names like google, apple and facebook joined the legal fight saying the order inflicts significant harm on american business, innovation and growth, but kpix5s legal analyst said no matter what the ruling, theres still more to come. Whichever side loses has 14 days to ask for either a rehearing before a full panel or they can just ask to go directly to the u. S. Supreme court. Reporter the Appeals Court says it will hear arguments tomorrow afternoon, but keep in mind this is one of many lawsuits challenging the ban and legal experts tell us we very well could see a supreme Court Showdown. Reporting live at sfo cate cauguiran, kpix5. Long lines of frustrated passengers at the hayward b. A. R. T. Station tonight. They pressed into the building with an interior fire attack taking hose lines inside and fought fire and realized the fire had actually spread to about four rooms inside the building. Now investigators will try to figure out how the fire started. Its after 2 a. M. In washington d. C. Right now and Senate Democrats are pulling an all nighter to try to derail President Trumps nominee for secretary of education. Veronica de la cruz is here with details on that showdown. Democrats are making a last ditch effort to sink the nomination of betsy devos. Lets take a live look at the senate floor in d. C. Right now. Two republican storms say they are voting in. As senators say they are going to vote no. As things stand now, tomorrow could be a 50 50 tie with Vice President mike pence breaking the tiebreaker. Devos has been criticized for her lack of experience in public education. Tonight senator Kamala Harris of california is among the critics. And after i reviewed betsy devos nomination including her record and confirmation testimony and after speaking with teachers and students and parents from across california, it is clear she does not understand the importance or the impact of a public schoolteacher. A little while ago we saw South Carolina senator tim scott, a republican, taking the floor voicing his support for betsy devos. So far there is no sign a third republican is turning against her. The senate vote whether to confirm her will happen around 9 a. M. Our time tomorrow. Veronica de la cruz, kpix5. Heres the deal. Anyone who lives in San Francisco, the city, can soon attend city college for free. City leaders have just struck a deal to provide more than 5 million for tuition. She later apologized. When a student asked her what shed like to change in our society . Well, some things that i would like to change. One is the electoral college, but that was [ cheering and applause ] reporter ginsburg shared her experience as a law student when there were few women in the field, raising a daughter and credited her husband for her success on the bench. She also stressed the importance of respecting colleagues who dont always agree. I wish there was a way i could wave a magic wand and put it back when people were respectful of each other. And the congress was working for the good of the country and not just along party lines. Reporter at Stanford Betty yu, kpix5. Today february 6th could become a state holiday. Republican assemblyman bill brow said congress should honor president ronald reagan. He will introduce a bill this year to try to make that happen. Thousands of email accounts will soon get an added security boost. Today the houses approved legislation that would update privacy protections for several service providers. Reporter Antioch Police found the dress after arresting the woman who was also found with the stolen car and now marie has her happily ever after ready for the next bride in the family. No pressure on the younger generation, but its here if you need it if you want a free dress. Its really pretty. Reporter Christin Ayers, kpix5. Tonight pg e is trying to explain why some bills have skyrocketed lately. This customer said her bill jumped from 20 to 90 bucks a month and she is not alone. Pg e said the higher bills are due to increased usage from the cold wet weather, but a utility Watchdog Group said customers are also getting hit with increased charges for pipeline improvements. State regulators approved that plan two years ago. The reason that people are noticing it now and didnt notice it last year is because last year we had a mild winter and the cost of the gas actually went down. While pg e says anyone who thinks their bills are too high should contact the utility and ask for a bill review. Kpix5 has learned some pot from bay area dispensaries contains a powerful pesticide so toxic even the Tobacco Companies wont touch it. Only on five tonight Wilson Walker puts local pot to the test. Reporter you cannot tell by looking at your cannabis whether its contaminated with pesticides, residual solvents, molds. Reporter want to know exactly whats in your marijuana . This particular instrument here is a liquid chromato graph. Reporter states like oregon, washington, massachusetts and colorado have either set limits on or banned certain pesticides for use on marijuana and tonight were going to focus on just one of them. Yeah. Microbut ynyl is approved for things like grapes and hops because if you happen to eat some of it, its considered harmless, but if you set fire to it if you smoke it, if you heat it, it can produce a substance called Hydrogen Cyanide which is very toxic to humans. Reporter thats exactly why the federal government prohibits the use of eagle 20 on toffee back owe, but remember, on tobacco, but remember, california currently has no such pesticide rules when it comes to medical marijuana. People are under the opinion things are safe and clean, but the fact of the matter is this is an unregulated environment right now. Reporter how much eagle 20 might you find on californias marijuana . We purchased samples from five different bay area dispensaries and we also arranged for the acquisition of some marijuana sold on the street and we sent it all off to the lab. Only one of those six had no detectable pesticides. Reporter thats right, just one. Three more had enough to make them test failures in massachusetts or nevada. Now our black market sample failed on nine different pesticide tests. Thats somewhat unusual to have that many hits on one sample. Reporter but if youre thinking the street weed was the dirtiest, guess again because our last dispensary sample was far and away the most contaminated with levels 13 times the amount allowable under oregon law. The main ingredient eagle 20. Reporter now the clock is ticking for california to come up with its own safety standards, what pesticides will be allowed at what levels and how will it all be tested for safe consumption . There hasnt been the level of rigor applied to the industry thats coming down the pike. Reporter because always of now, most of californias marijuana is being grown no questions asked and the result is plenty of products you would probably rather not smoke. Yeah. Unfortunately without any regulations requiring testing, its up to the purveyor whether they want to or not and its basically caveat emptor, right . Let the buyer beware. Safety standards for pesticides are supposed to be part of californias rollout of recreational marijuana, but there are already indications that the state will not meet that deadline in 2018. Checking in with paul right now. Weve got a lot of rain falling down around the bay area. We do.
