Chopper 5 has been following demonstrators all night and right now they are on telegraph avenue near channing in berkeley. Considerably fewer people in this crowd than what we had seen earlier. Estimates up to 500 people marching through the streets of berkeley and on to highway 24. We have seen some confrontations, though, in the street in the past few minutes including one person who appeared to be kicking in windows at a business. We are told it was wells fargo. It did it not take long for things to get ugly tonight. That is right, ann. Right here where we are at, we were here when a couple of groups of these demonstrators joined forces together here at this intersection of 52nd street. That is when they joined together. They took over this intersection, stopped the traffic. Then we take a look over here at highway onramp for highway 24. You see some Police Officers stationed there right now. It is pretty quiet. But they are there because earlier those demonstrators at least several of them, several dozen of them decided to take their march on to that freeway. They are splintered off group, heading into oakland, once it hit 52nd street, the intersection was taken over. The police cars flooded the area, sirens blaring. A group of protesters blocked off the intersection preventing patrol cars passing. Somed headed towards highway 24 onramp, dozens getting on the freeway. Helicopter video showing the demonstrators blocking traffic at a stand still for quite some time. At one point you can see fireworks set off on the freeway. Meanwhile, off of the freeway, a fire burned dangerously close to a police squad car. Rye on police in riot gear were there. Police responded with tear gas and from there the march moved on. Reporter again, you can see chp officers standing guard at the freeway onramp for highway 24. Martin luther king way and 52nd on and offramps over here. The off and onramp as well. Keeping an eye on things, right now traffic is moving on 24. The freeway is back open. Nobody on the freeway, highway 24 is back open and running. Live in oakland, kpix5. Thank you. The vandalism started earlier tonight. It this is the view from chopper 5 a little after 6 00 p. M. If you look closely in the middle you can see a guy spray painting the building. It went on for several seconds. Nobody was around to stop him. We will keep a close eye on the demonstrations throughout the night. Stay with kpix5 for the latest. Protesters are in response to grand jurys decision not to indict white Police Officers in the deaths of black men, legal experts say the whole system is broken but fixing it, they say, is not that easy. Sanfrancisco public offender points out that if you indict an officer there could be reprecautions. There is a conflict of interest. Local prosecutor will not want to go after the police, they have to rely on them and the political angle, if you are the elected District Attorney you will not want to piss off the police department. A suggestion any criminal case involving the police should involve an impartial special prosecutor. New at 11 00, u. S. Postal service says a substantial amount of mail was lost in a truck fire. A mixture of letters and packages were burned when the tractor trailer went up in flames. Two hours to salvage the rest of the mail and the truck. Nobody was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation. And, tonight, the chp is searching for the driver in a deadly hit and run crash on 580. Someone appeared to be throwing things at the glass doors, we are keeping a close eye on things and we will bring you another update if something happens. Making sure the gutters are cleaned and all of that. Low pressure will just hit a bullseye. It is tapping into a source, high wind, heavy rain on tuesday. And lets talk about this, one thing at a time. Again it is for thursday. Winds with this can be major. 30 to 75 miles an hour in the peaks and windy down below, too. Rain potential up to 10 inches in the mountains, the mountains in the north bay mountains, wave heights could be up to 30 feet. And 1224 inches of snow above 6,000 feet. There is a threat to power lines and trees with big mudslide potential, stay tuned. That will be the story of the week by thursday.
