This is kpix 5 news. A tragedy on the tracks. Bart train hits and kills two bart workers. This is a tragedy of the greatest proportion for the bart family. Federal investigators are taking over. What this means for the strike and negotiations. Good evening. Tonight we have Live Team Coverage on the accident and what bart and unions are saying. Lets start with brian webb where the crash happened. Reporter weve learned the National Transportation safety board has taken over this investigation from bart police. This is what they will be looking at. A 500 yard stretch of track behind me with four empty bart train cars and the bodies of two bart maintenance workers at the other. Bart emergency, bart emergency. You are hearing the radio transmission between a dispatcher and train operator as the accident happened. We struck individuals at 16th decibel 2. The bodies of two bart workers, an employee and a contractor. They were checking a reported dip in the tracks today and by bart procedure, one was supposed to do the inspection. The other was supposed to be the look out for incoming traffic. Both said to be experience on the tracks and around train. The specialty is track work. That means they understand the railroad, they understand how to work around moving trains. They were doing today what they have probably done 100, if not 1,000 other times. Bart Officials Say the out of Service Train was an experienced operator and several others on board but being controlled by computer at the time of collision. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of two workers who have just been killed on the bart tracks. Stop, stop. Stop. All stop. Investigators will try to determine how the people on the tracks and people on the train didnt know about each other. Why they didnt each other and if the warnings to stop could have saved lives. The San Francisco chronicle reports the worker told the nurse he saw the unconscious woman and that nurse told the Sheriffs Department. 57yearold Lynn Spalding disappeared september 21st and found two weeks later. Not sure if she was alive or how the Sheriffs Department responded. In other bay area headlines, it appears more than a dozen new recruits wont be joining the San Jose Police department. The class of 40 just graduated in september. But almost half of them are considering jobs with other agencies. The department is in the midst of a long bitter battle over pay and benefits. Also is about 400 officers short of where it was five years ago. New uc president is vowing to keep tuition costs under control. The cost to attend one of the university of california schools tripled over the past decade. During a visit yesterday, keeping tuition affordable would be a priority. Is currently visiting all of the campuses. The florida man hunt is over. Authorities say the men used phoney documents to forge their way out of prison. But they didnt go far from there. Reporter police found Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker at a hotel in florida. Just 100 miles from the prison they escaped from. No one was injured during the arrest that came hours after family members urged the men to turn themselves in. But both were allowed to leave the prison after officials received forged court papers ordering their release. We took him to his grandmothers house. She had no idea who was coming.
