Reporter dan, we have some new information for you tonight, first of all this is still an active investigation here at 98th and las vegas avenue. Police tell us he fired dozens of rounds at cars homes and at them. Neighbors say today was just the latest incident. One says he has been shooting up the neighborhood for the past week. What happens is neighbors called in about this individual armed with a rifle and that he was firing shots in the neighborhood. Reporter the call came in just after 9 00 a. M. As the man shooting a rifle from a home on oaklands las vegas avenue. When Police Arrived the man in the blue house began firing at them. We had multiple officers arrive on scene, reported that this individual was shooting at them. Rounds were strikinging the ground near where the officers were. Reporter from sky 7 you can see an Oakland Police suv with bullet holes in the windshield. No officer was hit. The suspect identified as 32yearold Jesse Enjaian aims his rifle at the helicopters overhead and is seen spraying graffiti. This woman did not want her face shown. And then i thought maybe it was a gun. I went back outside and heard several rounds together, five. Reporter another neighbor told us the trouble started a week ago. It started friday night. He shot the windows out and flattened the tires. Reporter finally the suspect goes down hit by at least one Police Bullet after officers secured his weapon and enjaian is wheeled away taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Once the suspect was detai d detained, we started a canvass in the neighborhood. Our concern is if anyone or any of the residents were injured. There have been no reports of any injuries to the residents and no reports of injury to any officers. Reporter we talked to at least a couple neighbors who say police have been called several times this week and were out here at least twice prior to todays incident. I just got off the phone with the spokesperson jana watson who says they could not confirm at this point that opd was here prior to today. That they are looking through their records, compiling that information and hope to have more for us in the days to come. A strange and scary day. The iteam has been digging into the suspects background all day long. Dan noyes is here. You have a real contrast here, a young man who was a brilliant student, a promising career. He tweeted out racist comments against immigration most too vulgar to show. One of the most startling was enjaians website with a violent rap song playing and aanime character, a vast contrast from where he grew up in fremont. His mother runs a Bookkeeping Service out of their home. He went to fremonts American High School where he was on the swim team and competed as a varsity shotputter on the track team. A spokesperson says some of his instructors remember him as a good student who was a member of the computer club. After high school he went to ucla, did rotc and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in economics. Enjaian earned a law degree in 2013, but at michigan enjaian had some problems. In 2012 Campus Police investigated him for stalking a fellow law student. The woman complained he wouldnt stop emailing, texting and trying to contact her. They confiscated his computers but he was never charged with a crime. He filed two lawsuits, one to police for failing to return his computers and another against the National Law Journal accusing them of defaming him when they published a story headlined Law School Alum accused of stalking. He took issue with the word accuse since he was never charged. Both lawsuits were dismissed. After his time in the army rotc, enjaian wrote in a lawsuit i could not physically make my body take the life of another human. You have to wonder what made him change today, dan and ama. Very troubled. Thanks, dan. Well, the worry, the danger, and the challenges during this active shooting situation were all reflected in Oakland Police communications. The most tense moments as captured on radio. It was tense from the moment dispatch got a call from the rp reporting party. A next door neighbor is shooting at her house. Apparently this is in progress. You hear the pressing concern for the safety of the ros, responding officers. Everybodys okay. Then you harper the urgency as shots from the house reached down the block to the union stage. Out of the line of fire right now. Anyone over there we are seeing bullets hitting the brick over there so you need to back up. S. W. A. T. Officers shoot the suspect and thats when tension peaks. Unknown if hes been hit. He was last seen with the rifle. It looks like the suspect is down and is moving behind the bush but hes not complying. Finally officers approach an injured enjaian and the threat ends. As we heard a frightening and difficult ordeal. Thanks so much. Police blocked off the neighborhood while the shooting situation was under way. People we talked with were stunned. Its just crazy. Its how it is. Its hitting home. You have kids in school. Nothing is safe. You cant walk to the park. They cant go to parks and now they cant even go to school. These children walking along 98th avenue were heading back to the Charter School. They had been evacuated several blocks away during the standoff for their safety. It is one of two schools. Bishop odowd is even closer to where all of this went down. Melanie woodrow continues our live Team Coverage with a look at how they kept students safe. Melanie . Reporter the children evacuated from this Charter School some were as young as 5 years old. The nearby High School Put on lockdown. Administrators at both schools say they were in Constant Contact with police. As the standoff unfolded students and faculty at Bishop Odowd High School of oakland found themselves dangerously close. You know, it was a nerveracking situation. Yeah, i had a split second there where i thought i hope i just hope nothing happens here. Reporter Oakland Police say Jesse Enjaian was armed with a rifle and scope taking shots. I mean, its really frightening. Reporter miriam was at school with her daughters when the schools director says she got a call from police first saying to lock down and then five minutes later to evacuate the school. Are we hearing you correctly . You really want us to leave . They said yes and even told us what direction to go to get out on the street. Reporter as the small students headed south they gave bishop odowd administrators similar directions. And we said, look, we want to you check that information because weve got 1,300 people on campus. Reporter the schools principal says police then told administrators to keep students in the building. I had a friend who was in the ceramics room and she says she could hear gunshots and some of the police radios. She had been communicating with me the police were on campus so i felt very much that odowd was doing a good job. Reporter students sent text s to their parents like this one that said were all just sitting here on the floor and no one is really worried. She sent me a snap chat that said, you know, lockdown, say a prayer. Reporter tense moments. Im just glad, of course, my kids are all okay. Reporter that ended with no one injured at either school. To recap the situation started around 9 00 a. M. When a woman called 911 to report her neighbor was shooting. When Police Arrived the suspect shot their patrol car. No officers were hurt. Then there was a roughly 30minute standoff while we watched the suspect aiming his rifle at various places including our sky 7 helicopter. By 10 00 a. M. The suspect identified as Jesse Enjaian had been disarmed and detained and was on his way to the hospital. And as this unfolded we went live on tv, sent out alerts through our abc 7 news app, twepted the latest information, and posted updates on facebook. Well, with the wind, strong winds, a big eucalyptus fell and hit a couple of houses up there. Reporter it crashed in a backyard of several homes in this neighborhood. Miguel ventura and his crew answered about a dozen calls about fallen trees during the storm. It hit the tree here in front of it before the branches landed on this roof. The homeowners have to assess the damage. No one was hurt and theyre glad the other tree blocked the eucalyptus before the branches landed on the roof. They are releasing wonderful from the reservoir which has been at 99 compaapacity. Water officials are preparing for spilling and possible flooding. And here is a look at how our reservoirs stand now. The biggest reservoir in Santa Clara County is 90 full. The biggest in the state lake shasta at 91 capacity. The second biggest Lake Oroville is down to 85 . Theres plenty of room now to handle it. Theyve flushed more than 40 feet of water from the troubled dam since sunday and will drain more from the lake at a reduced rate. Its the second time this has happened on doolittle drive in the last six weeks. The sedan was pulled out just before noon. Longtime taxi drivers want the city to put in safety barriers to prevent another death. This is not the first time, more like the eighth, the same thing, driving into this particular place. One taxi driver told abc 7 news many cabbies are already avoiding that part of doolittle drive because of the danger. Police and sheriffs deputies urge drivers to slow down especially in bad weather. A bill introduced this week may make it easier forc californians to get permits to carry concealed handguns. Californians can carry concealed weapons only if they convince their county sheriff that they have a good cause. Each of californias sheriffs define good cause. We have different sheriffs across the 58 counties in california and they dont all apply this rule equally and i think people should have a right to or they do have a right to defend themselves and the constitution.
