If youre wondering about the winds, they have died down significantly from 10 Miles Per Hour expected to say breezy in San Francisco, then it will pick up by about 10 00 a. M. And thats because theyre still expecting to see blizzardlike conditions. You saw the live traffic cam we showed you earlier. That will be in effect until 6 00 p. M. Tonight because its fairly windy up there and still expecting to see snow at times. Check the Road Conditions before heading up there. Heres what you can expect heading into today as that storm tapers off by midafternoon. Those winds will be decreasing. Expect periods of on and off again showers. Cooler temps ahead. Then a nice clearing afternoon. Now, over the next seven days we do have major changes on the way. Well be enjoying an overall pleasant sunday, cooler temps at 56, then dry through the start of work week. But if we pay close attention by tuesday we are seeing and looks like an additional storm system making its way in on tuesday. Thats going to bring another round of showers starting from tuesday and from what now the models are showing through friday. Not just for San Francisco but also inland areas. So yes, we have more wet weather ahead into the upcoming work week. Definitely excited about the rain tapering off so we can enjoy a sunny day tomorrow. Vianey, thank you. Its a little bit chilly out there especially along the coastline and San Francisco 49 and down here san jose and the south bay also in those 40s. Definitely a lot chillier than what we would expect for the spring. That Doppler Radar still showing plenty of moisture sitting off to the north bay. You can actually see a few popup thunderstorms on there. That means that will keep the chance of isolated thunderstorms at least to the early afternoon tapering off by midmorning. Well see a band of showers make its way through mainly focussed in the north bay over the next hour to an hour. That will push from the north to south bay. The temps overall today and the highs will be in the 50s. San francisco 56, Half Moon Bay 55 and san jose barely making it into the 60s. Weve seen a significant amount of snowfall in the past two days and we are expecting to keep that winter storm warning in effect until about 6 00 tonight. Thats because were still seeing windy conditions up on the mountains. If you had plans to head up to tahoe, please check Road Conditions before heading out the door. Rainbow park now by about 4 00, 3 00, 4 00, we should be in the clear, clearing out nicely, but early on still through the 11 00 a. M. Hour were still expecting to see some showers. Overall your day planner is looking pretty good after about 3 30. 9 00 a. M. Well keep that rain early on. Wind speeds still on the breezy side, 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour. By noon, 54, the showers will continue starting to decrease by about 3 00 to about 60 degrees inland areas 56 for the bay and then the winds also begin to die down at about 15 to 20 plus Miles Per Hour decreasing as that night goes on. By 7 00 we see clearing and breezy skies, 50 degrees for the bay. We do catch a break from the rain tonight. Heading into sunday as well. Now north bay will wake up to very cool temperatures. The chance of seeing some frost as well. Please be careful out on the roads. They could still be slick from last night as well. 9 00 a. M. We expect to see 47 degrees along the bay, by 12 00 staying in the 50s. Cool sunshine and sunny skies will linger through your sawn and into monday. Lets enjoy tomorrow and tonight, but remember were still expecting showers this Early Morning. Thanks. Your time now 7 45. Today in the back is back after this break. Coming up, we investigate. Its the constant i mean, its the lift and twist. Lift and twist. The lifting and twisting is taking a toll on garbage men in the east bay. Im liz wagner. Up next we investigate complaints that a perk for homeowners is leerching workers injured. Theres a garbage war in an upscale city. Sanitation workers are in pain and theyre pointing the finger at piedmont. Now were turning to liz wagner to suppose the hazards they say employees face every day. Reporter workers say theyre not just complainingp they say theyve sustained life changing injuries on the job. They show us scars from broken bones and multiple surgeries and rehab for a back fracture. They say in piedmont its not a matter of if workers get hurt, its when. Youre about to see why. Piedmonts Rolling Hills and stately homes make it a desirable place to live, but a dangerous place to work if youre a garbage collector. Uphills, steep hills, down steel hills. Reporter in most cities trucks make pickups curb side, but in piedmont any resident can pay extra for workers to retrieve bins from the backyard. Its mind blowing. Reporter mark works for richmond services. Just a perfect example of what were talking about. Reporter he points out conditions were seeing up close. Taking the bin up the stairs. Reporter as we follow the routes from our undercover van. Workers pull transport containers up flights of stairs, lift and empty bins over and over and over. And head back downhill carrying full loads. With unlimited recycling and yard waste piedmont residents can have as many bins as they want. Half of them have backyard accounts. Compare that to mill valley a city of the same size where its 8 or berkeley thats just as hilly where 1 of homes signed up for backyard pickup. Its the constant, the lift and twist. Reporter god free said the lifting wore out his back. I believe something came loose and is still popping and is very painful. Reporter joseph brown has had three shoulder surgeries. The scar from here to here. Reporter Paul Fernandez has gone under the knive four times. He crushed bones in his wrist when he slipped carrying a bin coming down the stairs. I cant throw a ball for my grandchildren, i cant pick up my grandchildren. Reporter while the company is delivering what it promised, the workers say its come at a price. They point to 15 people who they believe have been injured on the job. We talked to six who say they needed rehab or surgery. Were never trained to lift anything. You just throw a guy out there. You know, thats how we do it. We wingd it. Reporter brown raised concerns to the company in 2010 writing our issues with the lack of training and consistency are being unheard. In 2012 he told osha employees are getting injured when they lift. The company responded to state inspectors saying workers are trained to request assistance or leave the cart if its too heavy and noted manual lifting is covered in safety meetings. Theres no right way to lift these toters. Reporter but godfrey says the bins, called toters, arent meant to be lifted by hand. Theyre only supposed to be hooked up to trucks. Do you think this is a problem the Company Wants to ignore . I believe it is. Reporter he filed his own complaint with osha and they cited the company saying it did not provide effective training or correct unsafe conditions. We requested an interview with Richmond Sanitary Service but the company says its appealing oshas decision and wont comment until the case is closed. Did you have any idea that these workers were getting hurt on the job . None. Reporter thats until piedmont city administrator received an anonymous letter from a worker. The city was in the process of crafting a new collection agreement since the current one ends next summer. Benoit is making it a priority in the new contract asking bidders to find ways of minimizing workers comp concerns and that bins should be carried easily and without strain. That give us us the ability to audit and hold their feet to the fire. Reporter what adjustments can the city make to the contract now to mine mize worker injury for the next year and a half of this contract . Thats a good question and i actually dont have a good answer to it. Were in a contractual relationship. Reporter mark godfrey said he hopes speaking out will prompt the company to take a close are look at safety and training to lighten the load for workers collecting bins in backyards. Should be one uniform way to do it. And if theres not, eliminate it. Bring everything to the curb. Reporter the city administrator says thats not likely to happen. But he says in the future residents will be charged per bin which could cut down on the number of toters they have to lift. A recent audit doesnt discuss safety but notices the companys collection methods are consistent with reasonable industry practices. It is not your typical protest. People ate pizza at several stops in San Francisco to protest the citation of a homeless man. That man was eating a slice of pizza at a bus stop when an officer cited him for 250. He showed that ticket to workers at the coalition on homele homelessness. The rules are that you cannot eat at muni stop. But it will be waived if the man appears in court.
