Good morning, everybody. The president s new chief of staff, john kelly, is showing its not going to be business as usual as the white house. He immediately dismissed newly minted communications director, anthony scaramucci. Five Senior Administration officials have been given the boot since President Trump was sworn in five months ago. Were going to talk to Lindsey Graham to get his take on all this. Nobody likes Morning Hours more than senator graham. Its good to have him here. We have a lot of other news to cover, as well. Let us start at the white house. Nbc national correspondent, peter alexander, has the latest goings on. Reporter good morning to you. To be clear, lets try to break this down. Sean spicer quit because of anthony scaramucci, who forced out Reince Priebus, who was replaced by general john kelly who forced out anthony scaramucci. That was just the last week and a half. This morning, underscoring the challenge that chief of staff kelly now faces. A new report says President Trump overruled his closest advisers, including members of his own family, orchestrating his sons initial response to questions about a 2016 meeting with a russian lawyer. The Washington Post reports, that according to multiple sources with direct knowledge, President Trump personally dictated the initial statement that donald trump jr. Said he and a russian lawyer had primarily discussed, a program about the adoption of russian children, during the june 2016 meeting at trump tower. A misstatement the younger trump had to clarify days later multiple times. Days later, trump jr. Released emails that he really took the meeting because he was promised dirt on Hillary Clinton from russian government operatives. The president himself has publicly downplayed the encounter. They talked about adoption and some things. Adoption wasnt even part of the campaign. Reporter this morning, one of the president s lawyers saying the Washington Post story is fake news, incorrect, and misinformed, of no consequence. But two weeks ago, the president s outside counsel, jay sekulow, told chuck todd. The president was not involved in drafting the statement and did not issue the statement. It came from donald trump jr. Reporter barely an hour after donald trump insisted no white house chaos, his communications director, anthony scaramucci, was out. Ousted by retired general john kelly, introduced as the new commander for President Trumps troops. General kelly will go down in terms of position of chief of staff, one of the greatest ever. Reporter dumping the communications director, who poungsed on his bred pounced on his predecessor, Reince Priebus, as a paranoid schizophrenic. The final straw for the president sources say both melania and ivanka trump were particularly offended by the tirade. The president felt that anthonys comments were inappropriate for someone in that position. Reporter scaramucci, dining at the trump restaurant on monday in this photo taken by the daily mail. Gone just ten days after he was announced for the job, setting a new record for shortest stint in his position. The latest in a growing roster of rapid departures. The broader question, how much Political Capital has this president squandered . And how much does he still hold to try to accomplish his agenda . Many lawmakers, their aides say, no longer fear President Trumps threats. In the wake of last weeks failure to repeal and replace obamacare, many senators are ready to move on. Saying President Trump may have crafted that memo, released by donald trump jr. , about the meeting with the russian lawyer, saying it was primarily about adopting russian children. We know thats not true. If the president was involved in creating that statement. Its not illegal to lie to the press, does it bother you . It bothers me a lot. He put his son in jeopardy. Now, we have to wonder about what don jr. s team will tell you about what he did. If he didnt know about the email, the statement may have fooled you. If you know about the email with don jr. Its a misleading statement. It sounded like the president himself tried to cover up the truth about that meeting. If thats true, that was a bad decision by the president that will make us ask more questions. When you get caught in a lie about one thing, it makes it hard to just say let the other stuff go. Let me ask you about john kellys first day on the job. Hes a military guy. He knows what discipline smells like and looks like. He wasted no time in getting rid of a loose canon in anthony scaramucci. Do you feel confident that john kelly can bring discipline to the west wing . Well, the marines can do almost anything. The marines have landed at the white house. He has a beach head. Hes clearing the beach. And the only person who can kick him off the beach is President Trump. This will only work if President Trump empowers him to continue to do what hes doing. And if he can install some discipline in the president himself. Were talking about health care and 40 other things in the same week. To give up on health care, it would be a mistake. I have a bill thats never been presented to the senate. I think theres another round of health care coming. But the president has to work with the governors. We should look outside of washington to fix obamacare. It was a mistake by republicans not to do that. But for this to work, mr. President , you have to listen to the governors. Work with a group of us in the senate and stay onmessage for round two of health care. Youve been an outspoken critic of the president. As we just heard, senator flake ill repeat what he said in the piece, he said, of trump, we create the him, and now we are rationalizing him. When tell stop . What can the president do starting today, to regain your confidence . Having general kelly in charge really helps. Focusing on health care. Can he make it between now and september 30th . Focus on like a laser, trying to rally the congress, working with governors of both parties, coming up with a way to deliver health care. Discipline is what were looking for. We didnt create him. The American People chose him. But he beat me and 16 other republicans and the former secretary of state. We should honor his win. But he has an obligation to be president for all of us to stop the chaos. Most of the chaos is generated by him and nobody else. Do you think hes damaged the president , the credibility of the office in the last six months . Hes done things to me are unpresident ial. But its not hopeless. If you can pass health care, to get money and power closer to the patient, away from washington, move on to taxes. Effectively deal with north korea. His presidency can be consequential. But general kelly was probably the best choice available to him. Hes a good man. Listen to him. With all due respect, you didnt quite answer her question. Do you think he has damaged the credibility of the office of the presidency . I dont a lot of people thought obama had. Its in the eyes of the beholder. Rather than critiquing the office of the president , why dont i do this not empower him when he does dangerous things. Were not going to change the rules of the senate because he tells us to. The minorities had a voice in the senate. I dont want to become the house. Ive been in the house. Im not going to change 200 years of histories because Donald Trumps mad. We rebuked him when it came to russia. 972, to pass new sanctions. Would we have to look at a waiver he may give the russians, is a pretty strong pushback against donald trump. I will push back against him. I will call him out when he says things bad about the country. But if he will help me and others to deliver new health care, i will help him. He is our president , by the way. On the subject of north korea, the president said, well handle north korea. It will be handled. In your opinion, over the next year, is it more likely there is some sort of military conflict on the Korean Peninsula . Whether thats a Surgical Strike or something larger . Or is it likely that north korea will cement its place as a Nuclear Threat in the world . This is the ultimate question. I know its early in the morning. But President Trump has said i will not allow them to get an icbm with a Nuclear Weapon on top to hit america. Theyre headed that way. The only way theyre going to change is if they believe theres a credible threat of military force on the table. The chinese are miscalculating trump and so are the north koreans. Hes got to choose between Homeland Security and regional stability. Japan, south korea, china, with all being in the cross hairs of a war if we start one with north korea. If they get a missile that can hit california and other parts of north america. Every expert says there is no good military option. Theyre wrong. To destroy north koreas program and north korea itself. Hes not going to allow President Trump the ability of this madman to have a missile to hit america. The if theres going to be war to stop them, it will be over there. If thousands die, theyre going to die over there. That may be provocative but not really. When youre president of the United States, where does your allegiance lie . To the people of the United States. This man, kim jongun, is threatening america with a nucleartipped missile. President trump doesnt want a war. The chinese can stop this. But to china, south korea and japan, donald trump is not going to allow this missile are you saying its okay to use a military option that immediately endangers the lives of millions of people in that region . Im saying its inevitable unless north korea changes. Youre making the president pick between regional stability and homeland stability. Hes having to make a choice that no president wants to make. Now, to the search for the lone escapee who remains on the run after a brazen jailbreak in alabama. In all, 12 inmates escaped. And now, were learning they used Peanut Butter to break free. Gabe gutierrez explains. Reporter this morning, a manhunt is under way, to catch brady kilpatrick, the last of a dozen inmates on the run in alabama after a bold escape sunday night. This morning, an urgent plea to fix the opioid epidemic. The Commission Led by chris christie, asking trump monday to declare a federal state of emergency. 142 americans are dying every day of a drug overdose. To put that in context for everyone. Back in 1990s and 2000s, pain getting overemphasized. The government was using it as inspection criteria. It was the fifth vital sign. Because of that, it ges overemphasized. We never know with anybody when theyll become addicted. For some people, it can be a few pills, a few doses. For other people they never get addicted to it. We dont know until they start taking it. And then its too late. Its important to be educated. Its very important to educate. What i do to my patients all the time, is i talk to them about the goals behind treatment. And the goals should be shortterm dosage. In other words, the cdc is saying we shouldnt treat for more than three days and switch to other things to treat the pain. On top of that, prescriptions are tracked. We want to track them every time, and tell patients you need to dispose of your medication. Dont leave them at home because someone can get in your medicine cabinet. Theres other ways to alleviate pain. Thats the big thing here. After three days when you first start off, you want to start off with other medications. Antiinflammatories, ibuprofen, naprosyn, physical or massage therapy, acupuncture, all of these things help. And the cdc is saying in their guidelines, after three days, get off the opioids as soon as you can. Trump jr. s initial statement said the meeting was primarily about russian adoptions, but days after that statement, trump jr. Released his emails, which showed he had set up the meeting after being promised dirt on Hillary Clinton by russian government operatives. The president has publicly downplayed the encounter. Nothing came of the meeting. And i think its a meeting that most people in politics probably would have taken. This year marks a somber anniversa anniversary. 75 years since a shameful chapter in american history. After pearl harbor, with paranoia relating to everything about japanese. President roosevelt signed an executive order, japaneseamericans were shipped to primitive concentration camps in remote areas. Nbcs tom brokaw spent the weekend at one of those in wyoming. Tom, this is an incredible era in our history. Ive been aware of it for a long time. But every time you bump up against it, you cant believe it happened. Fdr signed that world. The chief of the Supreme Court signed off on it. I went to a place called heart mountain, in northcentral wyoming. When you get there, you have a sense of the desperation and the loneliness and the isolation and the unamerican attitude that it caused all of that. In august, 1942, 10,000 japaneseamericans from the west coast were shipped to a remote, barren concentration camp, thats what it was, in northcentral wyoming. Heart mountain. It was a shocking change from the lives they left behind. Norman mineta, california congressman later and transportation secretary under president bush, was 10 years old when the signs went up. You see a big placard and it says, instructions to all those of japanese ancestry. Reporter housing was crude in wyoming. Stifling hot in the summer. Bitterly cold in the winter. The wind was relentless. Towers with armed guards. Wartime propaganda tried to paint a false picture. Theyre not prisoners. Theyre dislocated people. Reporter after they arrived, the inmates, thats what they were, began to organize gardens and schools. But they also began to resist. The young men were drafted in the army from the camp. Imagine that. A number were unwilling to fight if their country would not free their families. And so, many did hard time in prison. Raymond uno, now 83 and a retired judge, cannot forget one night soon after his family arrived. His father, clarence, an american citizen, and world war i veteran, went to a uso meeting. He came home and never woke up. He died a prisoner of war for the United States governor that he served in world war i. Dane in ono, a biologist, entrepreneur, fishes a river his mother could only look at. His father sent to a camp in california, so the familys fishing fleet confiscated by the government. And no reason given. I am bitter. I am bitter. That legacy was lost. Its really my generation, who are obviously a little more ticked off about it. Reporter shirley is the child of a heart mountain family, making sure the world does not forget what executive order 9066 did to thousands of families. Every time i come to this place and i see the photographs of my parents, i do start crying. Its very difficult. Reporter that is heart mountain in the ground, for which this camp was named. What an irony. Heart mountain. In fact, this was an outrage. But it was also the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Al simpson, the legendary wyoming senator, came here as a boy scout from nearby cody and met norm mineta, another boy scout. There was barbed wire, guard towers, guys in the towers with a search light and a gun and a uniform. Why would you want to come here . Reporter and the two have not stopped talking since. An enduring friendship. Our friendship went back as if we were sitting in that tent, 1943. Reporter despite the painful memories, heart mountain, in its own way, called its people home this past weekend. Families gathered to honor the sacrifices made and to bear witness. Weve worked hard. Weve survived. Now, our story is here to tell others so it doesnt happen again. Not only that. But young men of draft age were drafted out of the camp and sent to war. Theres an amazing, new book out called just americans about the 442nd. That was Danny Inouyes outfit, the most decorated in europe, while the relatives were in concentration camps effectively. And when they resisted, the young men, they were thrown in jail as draft dodgers. One after he got out, joined the army and fought in korea. We celebrated some proud moments in space exploration. Its important to remember those moments, its really important for us to go back and remember some of the moments we are not proud of, in our nations history. Absolutely. And so Many Americans were unaware later, our generation. And younger generations like yours, were completely unaware of what had happened there. And we do need to be reminded during these days. Lobster rolls are so essential where we come from. We want to make it easier for everyone. Lobster is the main ingredient here. Want that to shine. When you mike lobster salad, you dont gunk it up. I want to start off with a little salt. A little. Pepper here. Youre going to do this at home, right . Lets break down the lobster. The best thing is a sharp knife. Start here, right down to the top of the tail. Just like so. And you can pull the meat right out and get ready to chop it. Take one of the claws i should have put an apron on here. We start by cracking that meat, right there. Got it. Once you try to get the meat out, everybody has a skewer in their house. Take that, use that, pick your meat out. Perfect. Good to go. We put together lobster lad salad at home. You do things like take the buns and you toast them up. You want to bring the buns with you. A little butter. A skillet is able to toast that. Lobster salad there. A little lemon juice. Little celery for crunch factor. And a little man noiyonnaise to together. Great to pack it up for the road. We have a lobster salad. Were going to talk about a clam boil or bake. How do you do that . This is going to make it easy. Take it on the road with you. Were going to start off with a little sheet of foil and a little pat of butter. Rub that down on the bottom. And leave that in there. Thats going to add flavor to it. We start with clams, muscles. An you have to have a good sausage. All this is going to make its way into the boil. Grab a couple pieces. If you dont have anything like this available to you, you can make this with shrimp, anything you want to grab. Now, we add our aeromatics. We have a little onion. Garlic. 30 seconds lef s left.
