The big moment on tap tonight will be for governor mike pence of indiana. His first chance to really be heard by the world after largely being overshadowed during that vp rollout. You may have been following, a bit of a side story going on whether parts of Melania Trumps trump monday night was plagiarized. For a moment last night, similar allegations aimed at donald trump jr. With the stage now set for night three of the gop convention, new details are emerging about that night one speech from Melania Trump that you mentioned, and accusations that she plagiarized some passages from Michelle Obama. Its why when donald trump jr. Said a few lines last night that seemed similar to someone elses work, the initial reaction, not again. Turns out it wasnt quite plagiarism, maybe a bit of recycling with the Trump Campaign now pushing back. A false alarm spreading fast online after the daily show tweeted similarities between donald trump jr. s speech and the column by conservative writer frank buckley. Our schools used to be an elevator to the middle class, now theyre stalled on the ground floor. Reporter turns out, buckley tells nbc news, i was a principal speechwrites e speechwriter for the speech, its not an issue. Its not clear whos behind Melania Trumps speech, similar to Michelle Obama speech. Sources tell nbc news the trump team hired veteran speechwriter matthew skully to craft those remarks. The draft submitted shows none of the passages in question. A senior trump aide telling nbc news, that draft was mostly rejected, but remaining tightlipped about who added these lines the values. You work hard. You work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond and you do what you say. And you do what you say reporter donald trump jr. Defending his stepmother. Works with speechwriters to get something happening, and thats it. Reporter even as top trump aides and surrogates first argued there wasnt any cribbing, just common cliches. I. G. Reporter turn it in dotcom found 6 of trumps speech matched the first ladys eight years ago. Word for word, trump used 23 of the same words in a row that obama did. And this morning its still not clear whos responsible for adding those passages to Melania Trumps speech. Although some reports indicate it may have had something to do with a former ballet dancer with longtime ties to the trump family working with mrs. Troump that. Trump on that. In the meantime, a lot of eyes on eric trump who will take the stage tonight. Matt and savannah, i just spoke with him here on the convention floor, he says his goal tonight, to explain the why. All about that speech we just talked about. What is the headline this morning . Learning that donald trump jr. And Chris Christie begin to calm the jittery nerves of the gop. And donald trump is the official republican nominee has changed his psychology a little bit. Not got the party fully united but it moving towards a little bit of a normal situation where its the red team against the blue team. Lets talk about the speeches last night. Donald trump jr. Had a difficult job, and in a way he took on more than he needed to, but it seemed like he delivered. Not only did he do the character witness for his father, which most children of a candidate would do, he also made a policy argument, and also took on Hillary Clinton. Do you think it was effective . You know, i do, and i think weve you talked about the family all week because theyve been thrust into controversy, not willingly, but, you know, donald trump jr. Did what every kid of a politician is able to do. They have more goodwill than the candidate themselves. All the ickiness attaching inside to a candidate does not attach to a kid. He took a risk, but pulled it off. A talented messenger. And one of the speeches, governor Chris Christie, sometimes prosecuting, literally and figuratively, Hillary Clinton, and it brought out a lot of the anger that weve been talking about over the course of this campaign that is in the electorate. We heard it in their chants of lock her up and guilty, does that anger work at an event like this . A lot of republicans, even Trump Supporters didnt like the chant, thought they maybe went a little too far. The reality is, donald trump probably couldnt beat any other democrat running for president but for Hillary Clinton because of her weaknesses on issues and Chris Christie talked about that. Trust and honesty. If theyre going to win, people like Chris Christie and donald trump saying to the country, you cant be for Hillary Clinton. Thats the only alternative. Went too far for some, but thats the emotion. Politics rely a lot on emotion. And nicole, the speeches have been a lot about Hillary Clinton, as much, if not more, about a takedown of Hillary Clinton, and a positive case for donald trump. Hillary clinton has high negatives. So is this effective in terms of flush could out for people, okay, this is why you dont feel good about her, or go too far . Does it overestimate how much people dont care for Hillary Clinton . I think we underestimate the power of negative messaging. Campaigns are its sort of a fantasy and you start to you have to raise your positives. In this campaign, in this climate, with these candidates, its never going to happen. This is going to be an incredibly negative campaign. Both candidates of vulnerable on their negatives, so Neither Campaign will spend time propping up their own positives. Negative against trump and negative, and i think the chanting was bad, but i think it will be canceled out next week by equally uncomfortable moments with the democrats at their convention. We are at halftime. The middle point of the convention. If youre an undecided voter sitting at home, dipping in and out of watching the convention, feeling better about trump as a possible president or worse . I think just on donald trump jr. s speech alone, for some people, better. This is going to rely upon two speeches above all else. Tonight we hear from Newt Gingrich and mike pence. Florida Health Officials investigating a new case that apparently did not stem from travel to another region of the world. If it is confirmed, it would be the first evidence that zika has spread to mosquitoes here in the continental u. S. All cases up to now have been in people who travel to zikaaffected regions or their partners. Going to new york now. Most lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge just north of the city have reopened this morning after a crane collapsed across the entire width of that bridge on tuesday. As you can imagine, this created a traffic nightmare. The bridge was shut down in both directions for about five hours. Transportation Officials Say six of the seven lanes have now reopened. No cars were hit when that crane collapsed. No one was seriously hurt. Its amazing. Officials say its unclear what caused that crane to fall. A lot of people saying their prayers, breathing a sigh of relief. Down to al, a first check of the weather and gorgeous day in cleveland. The actual air temperatures, upper 90s to 100. Factor in the heat and humidity, it will feel like in minneapolis over 100. Kansas city, oklahoma, dallas and rapid city. We go on into the northeast and the midwest. Chicago, cleveland, atlanta, new orleans, heading towards the end of the week, that feelslike temperatures well above 100 and even the northeast. We are looking at a lot of heat. Air temperaturewise, we have temperatures right around 100. Factor in the humidity and the feelslike temperatures, again, over 100 degrees. Dangerous heat. Want to make sure you check or elderly neighbors and family and friends, because this could be potentially a lifethreatening heat wave. This morning, friends, family and fans are mourning the loss of a hollywood icon, garry marshall. A beloved figure in show business, marshall leaves a legacy of laughter and heart warming moments on television and in films. Born in the bronx in 1934, marshall got his start in the late 1950s as a joke writer. Eventually working on the tonight show with jack paar. In 1970, marshall adapted his first tv hit the odd couple. Police are still at the scene of whats been a lengthy standoff in oakland vovming a number of people. Its reason unfolding since 3 30 this morning near 15th avenue. Police arrived at the location detaining several people. Others came out as police guns were drawn. Reports of up to three people still hold up inside and that a weapon may be involved. Is his era at that network coming to an end . Legal correspondent Cynthia Mcfadden following this story and the lawsuit closely. Shes at fox headquarters in new york this morning. Cynthia, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. Well, there has been a lot of speculation about whether roger ailes is poised to sign a massive exit deal with fox news. This morning, sister publication New York Post makes it clear, the end is near. New images of roger ailes seen here leaving fox news with wife Elizabeth Chilson amid reports the longtime ceo could be on his way out for good. Ailes recent trouble began earlier this month when former fox news anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against the 76yearold media mogul alleges repeated sexual harassment. She urged others to speak out, releasing this message on twitter tuesday. Its time for us to come out of the shadows and let our voices be heard. Reporter ailes called the allegations offensive and defamatory and said they would be vigorously defended. Now another fox news anchor megyn kelly has entered the controversy among new York Magazine reports she, too, was sexually harassed by ailes. Ailes attorney responded saying, roger ailes has never sexually harassed megyn kelly. In fact, spent much of the last decade promoting and helping her to achieve the stardom she earned for che sha has repeatedly and publicly thanked him him. Hes absolutely a mentor to me. Hes also a friend. Hes he is my boss. I mean, were not equals. But i depend on him for friendship and seeing honest advice and hell give it to me. Reporter wrote an ailes profile in 2011 painted a picture of a man who revolutionized cable news, combining years as a political operative and ultraconservative ideology to build fox news from the ground up. Roger had an incredibly free hand in developing fox news. So fox news is in every way a reflection of roger ailes. Reporter much to ails chagrin, Rupert Murdoch but his sons lockland and james in charge of fox news announced ailes would be reporting to them. Sources with direct knowledge of the situation told nbc news, the brothers wanted ailes out, even back then. Roger ailes is the most important person in television news. He is the most important person in the conservative movement in america. Reporter the decision about whether to remove roger ailes from his post will undoubtedly have an affect not just on fox news but also on the landscape of republican politics. Our new nbc News Survey Monkey online poll shows Vice President ial nominee mike pence is not very well known to American Voters and 43 of conservatives dont know enough about him to say whether he is a good or a bad choice. Something republicans are hoping to change when pence takes the stage hours from now. Gonchar pence, what did you think about the chaos this morning . Reporter indiana governor mike pence tonight will speak to an audience of millions making his primetime debut here in cleveland. A massive change from just a week ago. Now hes surrounded by reporters and secret service. This is what its like to overnight become a Vice President s candidate. The secret service just arrived. I actually got out of the car in the alley and saw all of these cars, and i turned to the security official and i said, are they all with us . The mike pence snow reporter and as governor, has proven to be a staunch social conservative signing controversial legislation, including a religious freedom bill that came under fire from gay rights groups. Thats my babys entire day that im missing, wake up to after bedtime. How do you negotiate that . You dont. You stalk them on net cameras. Thats what we do. Every morning im like, hi, baby. Shes like running a around in the living room. How do you feel about baby number two on the way . I feel great. You look good. The babys still protected in my belly, the babys not out and about doing things. Right now its great. Hows ashton doing . Great. Theres no baby. Its just inside.
