Finding any survivors on board that plane. In fact, at the moment, its proving difficult enough to find the plane itself in some of europes most mountainous terrain. Most of those on board were either spanish, germany, german, or turkish. For the cause of the crash at the moment, thats a complete mystery. Its a tragedy and a search centered on the most rugged terrain. This is the remote area of the french alps where the plane with 150 people on board went down less than an hour into a flight to germany. The crash site is said to be a 2 1 2hour hike from the nearest village. This is the germanwings plane, 24 years old, an airbus 320 flying at an altitude of 38,000 feet when it began what appears to be a controlled decent edled its altitude dropped until around 10 47 local time the pilot sent a distress signal. The french president says no survivors are expected to be found. He met the spanish king today. 45 of those on board are believed to be spanish. Most of the rest, german or turkish. At dusseldorf airport, where the plane was due to land, distressing scenes as relatives were told the news. At least 400 search and rescue workers are on their way to the area. No bad weather conditions were reported during the flight. It is hoped the planes two flight recorders can be found and analyzed, but for now, the cause of this crash is a mystery mystery. If there is every hope, despite that rugged terrain, that those flight recorders can be found and french air accident investigators are among the best in the world. So in time, the cause of this crash may well be discovered, but that of course is of no comfort to the relatives of those 150 people on board who are suffering so deeply right now. Matt, savannah . Bill, thanks very much. The video shows, thats going to be so difficult for this investigation. 2,000 meters up, 6,000 feet in the french alps. Incredibly rugged terrain. Lets turn to nbcs tom costello. He covers aviation for us. I know youve been working your sources. Based on what we know so far, what do you make of these facts, in particular the distress signal that came about an hour into the flight . Perplexing here. 90 of accidents occur on takeoff or landing. The something happened at altitude is really a concern. 38,000 feet, then descends down to somewhere around 5,000 to 6,000 feet. At some point along that track, this transponder code goes out. Its a Digital Radio transmission thats declaring an emergency. Its not a voice transmission. Its a coded transmission. Its not a hijack code, by the way. Its a mechanical emergency of some sort. Then the plane, it appears, slams into a mountain. Why did this plane descend in a rather orderly fashion from 38,000 feet all the way down to 3,000 to 4,000 feet per minute . Was it on auto pilot . Was the crew incapacitated . Was there a pressure problem or a fire or smoke in the plane . These are all of the issues that investigators are looking at right now. Clearly, the priority is going to be getting those black boxes, the cockpit voice and data recorders recorders. The airbus a320, by the way, is a workhorse of a plane. It is flown around the world, here in the United States by u. S. Airways, american airlines, united. Very commonly flown in europe, asia, latin america, and asia. More than 6,000 a320s have been built since they were first rolling off the line. Theyre really all over the world. Its a very highly sophisticated, automated airplane with multiple backup systems. For something to go wrong and create a situation in which the plane did this orderly descent then slams into a mountain, something obviously went terribly wrong, but the crew didnt have time to radio exactly what it was. Tom costello, thank you so much. As we mentioned, theres a News Conference going on right now. Already one heartbreaking fact to come out of it. There were two babies among the 150 people dead this morning. 144 passengers, 6 members of crew. Were going to have more on nbcnews. Com. Were going to pause for a moment, give some of our stations a chance to return to regular programming. A lot of stories making news this morning. Another major story involving Angelina Jolie. The oscar winner revealing in todays New York Times that she has had preventive surgery to remove her ovaries. Her decision comes after doctors discovered a possible sign of early cancer. Two years after jolie underwent a double mastectomy. Ovarian cancer kills about 14,000 women every year. While the news of Angelina Jolie choosing to have yet another surgery may surprise people. She said she wants to share her experiences to let women with a Family History of cancer know they have options. In an oped in this mornings New York Times, actress Angelina Jolie wrote she chose to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to reduce her chance of getting cancer. Almost two years ago, the oscar winner revealed she had a double mastectomy, a decision he made after losing her mother to Ovarian Cancer in 2007. After losing my mom to these issues, im grateful for it, and ive been moved by the kind support from people. Really, very grateful for it. Two weeks ago, the results of a blood fest revealed possible early signs of Ovarian Cancer. In the editorial, jolie writes, i went to see the surgeon, who had treated my mother, and she teared up when she saw me. You look just like her. I broke down. But we smiled at each other and agreed we were there to deal with any problems, so lets get on with it. You know, shes a movie star. Her journey of decision making, agonizing, fear. Those are all issues every woman has struggled with every time they hear any possibility of a disease. So in her case, again, a severe cancer, generations of cancer, i can understand why she did it. Jolie says while this surgery was less complex than the double mastectomy, its effects are more severe. Jolie writes, i will not be able to have anymore more children, and i expect physical changes, but i feel at ease with whatever will come. Not because im strong, but because this is a part of life. While waiting for her test results, jolie called her husband and the father of her six children, brad pitt. About pitt, jolie writes, i called my husband in france who was on a plane within hours. The beautiful thing about such moments in life is there is so much clarity. Jolie acknowledges that while its impossible to remove the entire risk of getting cancer, she remains hopeful about her health and her future. So many people admire her for her beauty, but also her strength. Complicated decision. She writes about it at length. Were going to talk more about this in the next half hour. Meantime, the legal battle may be far from over in the alleged case of rape at the university of virginia that drew nationwide attention. Rolling stone magazine had already apologized for its reporting. Now police say there is no evidence to back up the original claims after their investigation. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is in charlottesville this morning. Good morning to you. Reporter savannah, good morning. Police here say they interviewed about 70 people during the course of this investigation, which lasted several months. Its now suspended but not closed entirely because the police chief says he cant rule out that something terrible did happen, only that it wasnt what was described in that Rolling Stone article. This morning, the fraternity accused of gang rape at the university of virginia is exploring its legal options, saying that Rolling Stone sought to turn fiction into fact is shameful. Now, can i say that Nothing Happened . No. I can just tell you we found no evidence to support those specific allegations. Reporter those allegations published in novembers Rolling Stone magazine. A woman claiming she was sexually assaulted by seven men at this Fraternity House in 2012. Alex stock is one of jack keyies friends. Jackies credibility has been a question, at least in my mind, for a long time. I think when it all culminated with the chief saying he couldnt find any evidence either, that wasnt a big surprise. Reporter police say jackie also claimed that in april of last year, her roommate removed broken glass from her face after a separate assault. But according to police, the roommate denies that. Jackie says she called her mother that night, but police say theres no evidence of that call. Its never been just about the details of jackies story. Its been about the hundreds of other survivors we can support and making sure we have as few future ones as we possibly can. Reporter uva says the investigation confirms that the university provided support and care to a student in need. But now some advocates worry it will be even tougher for future victims. This is a bad day for all rape victims because that means itll be harder for those victims to be believed when they actually are raped. Reporter the attorney for jackie has declined to comment. As for Rolling Stone, it had previously apologized to readers. Now it is only saying that it will await the results of that independent investigation into its reporting, conducted by columbia universitys journalism school. That investigation is expected to be published within the next few weeks. Matt . All right, gabe. Thank you very much. Lets turn to politics now the pieces are slowly falling into place for the 2016 president ial race. More candidates are soon expected to announce their own plans after texas republican ted cruz became the first to officially toss his hat into the ring. Today i am announcing that im running for president of the United States. And there it was. Ted cruz joins us now along with his wife heidi. Good morning to both of you. Senator, mrs. Cruz, you ready for this . You ready for whats now about to happen in your lives and the attention youre going to get . Youre getting some in the newspapers already this morning. Both good and bad. Well, i hope so. Were certainly ready for going forward, doing everything we can to turn the country around. Mrs. Cruz, youre not someone who seeks the spotlight. You dont do interviews. You dont speak out about politics. Im happy youve decided to do this interview. Are you ready for the personal scrutiny that this is going to bring to your life, and in some ways already has . Well, sure, matt. I think any time you embark upon something thats so much bigger than yourself and your own family, i dont know that you ever feel fully prepared. But we have a very strong marriage, an incredibly strong family, and are guided by our faith. I think were ready to see change in this country, and were honored to have a voice in that. Senator, youre a guy whos known for taking on your own party. I think at one point you called some republicans mainstream republicans squishes for their stance on certain issues. Youve also led your party into some fights that backfired, the defunding of obamacare comes to mind. So you have detractors. Not only across the aisle but within your own party. How can you win the nomination unless you build a much broader coalition than the one you already have . Listen, i think youre exactly right that we need to build a broad coalition. We need to bring together the old Reagan Coalition of conservatives and evangelicals and libertarians and republican women and young people and moderates . And reagan democrats. You got to bring everyone together. One of the things thats striking, matt, i think all across this country people are hurting. They recognize the path were on. It isnt working. Theyre looking for a change. Theyre looking to get back to the principles that made america strong. So on the subject of a broad coalition, is there room in ted cruzs Republican Party for those who are socially liberal, for those who are prochoice, for those who support gay marriage . Look, absolutely. We welcome a broad tent and a broad coalition. What im trying to do is stand for principle. The two things that ive tried to do more than anything else in my time in the senate have been, number one, tell the truth, and number two, do what i said i would do. The interesting thing on that is i think people can respect that. Even if they dont necessarily agree on everything. But you know your reputation. In your short time in the senate, youve developed a reputation as a guy who does not back down, who will not compromise. I think you even referred to yourself recently, you said, im kind of like the disruptive app in politics. Will you bring that brand of nocompromise to the white house if youre elected . Well, matt. Let me disagree with the premise. Ive never said i wont compromise. In fact, from day one when i was elected, i said, my attitude on compromise is exactly the same as ronald reagan. Reagan said, what do you do if they offer you half a loaf . Answer, you take it. Then you come back for more. Shortly after elected, you also said, quote, i dont think what washington needs is more compromise. Because what washington does often is it compromises going backwards. Im perfectly happy to work with anyone, democrat, independent, libertarian, if theyre shrinking the size and power of the federal government, if theyre turning around the debt, if theyre expanding liberty. What washington does, though, is you have compromises like the socalled cromnibus bill that passed. Paid off corporate welfare, every special interest in washington, and simply grew government. Thats not a good compromise because its not fixing the problems in this country. Quickly for you, mrs. Cruz. Youve heard some of the adjectives used to describe your husband. Is the Public Perception of this man inaccurate . Ted cruz is someone who tells the truth. He knows what he believes. It was one of the things that really drew me to him. This is a person of conviction. And i think the American People want to know what theyre getting. A couple weeks ago, you were at an event in new hampshire, and you were using your rhetoric and you said, the world is on fire. There was a 3yearold girl right up front. She looked and took it very literally and said, the worlds on fire . You pivoted very quickly. Is he thattage agile with your two children at home . Oh, hes very agile. Our 6yearold pleaded in one of his speeches, im almost 7, tell them im almost 7. She said to her father the other day that a lot of the kids at school were talking about her dad and not about her. And ted said, wow, the same is true for me. He said, i spend about you. Hes very, very agile. Made her very proud. Well, youre off and running. We appreciate you stopping by this morning. Thank you, matt. It is breathtaking, and its encouraging. The energy and the exhilaration there yesterday, and what were seeing on the trail, takes your breath away. Good luck to you both. Thank you. Thank you very much. Lets head over to al for a check of the weather. All right. Thanks so much, matt. As we look at the Pacific Northwest, we have wet weather making its way in. He was denied bail in louisiana. We are learning more of what he was doing in the days of his arrest. Stephanie gosk, good morning. Reporter good morning. Prosecutors revealed in a bond hearing they had robert durst. The room, with another 117,000 in a package waiting to be picked up. Th. 12k3w4r6r7b89s. Usan berman 15 years ago, which the 71yearold denies. But durst could still be sentenced to 10 to 20 years without parole. Its obviously a very, very serious charge. Reporter while investigators are multiple cities are digging up cold case, police in vermont are once again looking into the disappearance of 18yearold College Student who went missing in 1971. Releasing a statement on monday, saying in part, we are aware of the connection between robert durst and the disappearance of lynne schulze. Weve been aware of this connection for several years and have been working with various outside agencies as we follow this lead. At the time, durst owned a Health Food Store named all good things. Decades later, it would become the title of a thinly fictionalized movie about his life. Katie and i moved to vermont. We lived this sort of back to the land kind of lifestyle. Reporter in 1982, his first wife kathie durst would go missing too. Back to you. All right. Stephanie, ill take it. Now to Robert Dursts defense attorney who joins us now. Mr. Guerin good morning to you. Good morning to you too. He is described as frail, thin. He had been held in a Mental Health part of the jail apparently on suicide watch, according to police. Lets just get one thing out of the way. In your view is he competent to stand trial and go through these Legal Proceedings . Will you be making any claim hes not able to do so, not fit to do so . I believe hes competent. Hes not in good health. Hes got some very Serious Health problems. But hes competent. What about this notion that he is on suicide watch . Hes not suicidal. Frankly, hes relieved to be able to finally get a a chance to get into court on all these rumors that have been swirling around. If we can just get to court in california. However, were stuck here in louisiana. Its a nice place to be stuck. But they are relatively minor charges compared to this accusation of the murder of susan berman. We want to get to california and try that case. I want to talk about the california case in a second. First, let me ask about the bail hearing yesterday. You looked candid. You knew your client wasnt going to be able to post bail. On the other hand, according to police he was found with a new cell phone, fake i. D. Mask gun, and a map open to the gulf coast, including cuba. Discovery is when the prosecutors are required to give you the evidence and tell you what the evidence is. Until yesterday when we had our hearing, we just didnt have anything. Now you know. What do you make of that . Is we now they what theyre claiming. Well its evidence. Were going to have to litigate it and whether it is admissible at all in louisiana. If its not admissible in louisiana, i dont know if it will be admissible in california. But we are doing what lawyers do. We get into court and we ask for the evidence. You mentioned the case in california. You suggested that the evidence there is rather thin. And based on this document a ear. That may well be the case. Lets take the evidence that we are aware of because of the documentary. One alert bob durst acknowledges was sent by the killer, whoever killed susan berman. And the other written by him. And it looks so very similar to that. Im not going to try the case on the today show or any other public forum other than in court. So im not going to discuss that. We will be doing what lawyers do. And try the case in court. If we have to try part of it here in louisiana, well, we have to do that. But really what we need to do is get to california where these what i think happened is the prosecutors there jumped the gun because of the television show. A couple of quick things. I know you dont want to get into the evidence. Just tell me this are you concerned about this alleged confession caught on tape . Well i told you im not going to discuss the evidence but thats not a confession. And finally, sir, i know as his lawyer you likely advised mr. Durst not to participate in this documentary at all. Most lawyers conclude nothing good could come of that. Do you feel he regrets now participating in it . I think he was regretting it in the back room conversation. Yes, he didnt take the good voice that he got from lawyers. Other than me. I didnt talk to him about it. He didnt ask me about it. But he didnt take that advice. And he was tricked, as he was told probably would happen. Can i follow up real quickly on what you mean by that he was tricked . By the filmmaker . How is that . Theres no question. First, its all in the editing. The editing was designed for Good Television but it wasnt designed to get to the truth. Mr. Deguerin i know you will have more to say in a court of law but i appreciate your time this morning. Thank you. Youre welcome. Thank you. A turn now with a check of the weather from al. Angelina jolies announcement that she has undergone surgery to remove her ovaries and falopian tubes sheechl had possible signs of early cancer. This comes two years after cutting her risk of Breast Cancer by having a mastectomy. I should mention that Angelina Jolie lost her mother to Ovarian Cancer when she was 49. When you look at the facts and the facts she laid out in the piece, are you surprised by the decision . Not at all. Her intent was always to do this. It was just a matter of time. He was undergoing the recommended screens and surveillance for a woman in her situation with her bracket of positivity. It came to light that now would be a time to have more aggressive look into what was going on. Its important to say that she state that her ca 125 level was normal . Translates . It can be raised in a bunch of benign tests. People hang on to that word. What she had were inflammatory markers that were elevated. She did imaging after that. We learned or today Parenting Team a forum where people can weigh in with tips to make life easier as a family. We received a big response to our first question. What do you wish youd known before bringing baby home was the challenge we launched for our team. I wish i knew everything was going to be fine and work out. I would spend less time worrying and more time being present and enjoying the moment. Sometimes you do worry. How often do i need to bathe my baby. This little beautiful child who cant walk or crawl or do anything. Do i bathe her every day . I wish i had my son that no matter how scared and inexperienced i was, i wasnt going to break the baby. Trust your instinct and as long as you love your baby everything will work out fine. Then the things nobody tells you. The thing i wish i knew was how hard Breast Feeding was going to be. I assumed this was something that i could naturally do. Point the penis down. Nobody tells you that. I went through a box of diapers trying to find out why my son leaked through. You will never ever again get a full night of sleep. It never happens. Let it go. Byebye sleep. There lessons you wasnt learn until they are home. Throw away the to do list. Nothing on that list is as important as nurturing that soul. What i wish i would have known before i took my son home from the hospital was that he was going to teach me as much as i was going to teach him. Well said. We have honest answers. We are tackling a topic called sharing. Turning to social media to manage the highs and lows. How much is too much . Chanel is here with her fellow today Parenting Team. We have Joanne Richards and the creator of the blog. Good morning to all of you. Nice to see you. I like that we have a dad doing it. We need more das involved. Where do you come down on it . You like to share on social media . When it comes to sharing, its how you do it. You share the good and the bad. My 4yearold was trying to pee like daddy was and she is a girl. Lets figure out why that was a problem. We have to share the good and the bad. We need to see the bad too. Chanel, you talked about an occasion and it was helpful. Sometimes it turns into bragging in some ways as opposed to sharing, but one day, i have two 2yearolds and a 5yearold. I wanted to wean them off of pacifiers. I got hundreds of comments of them giving me different ways. People gave me advice. I took the best of all of it and i figure cold turkey doesnt work for me. There was one saturday afternoon i was by myself and they were both screaming. I got my phone and tweeted im cracking. I didnt say anything else. People knew who i was talking about. People said hang in there, read books. I tweeted the books are not working. It became a therapy session for me and didnt feel so alone. This morning we are pacifierfree. It felt good. You keep it real and thats why i love to read your writing. There is a good side of sharing and sometimes it can make other parents feel alienated. I dont look like her. I dont have it all perfectly assembled like those that post on facebook seem to. They dont share the hard because they think when parenting gets hard they are doing something wrong. Thats thenot the case. Its hard especially for those doing it right. I had a decade where i couldnt get my kids to sleep. She might as well ask me to climb mount everest. I didnt have time. I said i am in the middle of bedtime and i am playing a game of whack a mole. They keep coming out of their rooms. So many people said me too. The advice is not what helped. Its the me too. Its the reassurance of im not alone. It made me a more confident line. What is the tmi line. You can see all kinds of stuff. I think as social Media Influencers and parents, the owness is on us to know where the line is. Sometimes i dont need to see the floating doo doo. You say if there is not a picture, its not real. I will take your word for it. As kids get older, you dont top the share their business. Thats not for them to decide. The visual footprint is real. Pictures of me on the toilet when i was 4 or 5 years old. My kid is going for a Job Interview at age 22 or 24, do i want this picture out there. Their medical information too. Some Health Things can stay off line. Good conversation can continue online. We top the hear from you at home on bringing home baby. Thats it. After one to two minutes how is it down there . That was great. You add a little bit of water. This is the best trick. Back in 25 minutes with another local news update. Angelina jolies bold move to protect her health. A thrill right on ride on the Worlds Largest gigacoaster. All that and more coming up right now. Announcer from nbc news, this is todays take with al roker Natalie Morales willie geist, and tamron hall live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning and welcome to a tuesday morning, march 24th 2015. Al and tamron hall and jenna bush haeger. Natalie and willie are off. We want to send our thoughts and prayers to those impacted by the plane crash, the germanwings airline, a Budget Airline operated by lufthansa. An a 320 crashed on the way from barcelona to dusseldorf germany. We are watching this and we will have the latest developments on msnbc and we will update you here on nbc as the details become available. Sad story. It is. Another story we are talking about is Angelina Jolie is revealing a decision in an op ed to say she had surgery to remove her ovaries and falobepian tubes. She had inflammatory markers that were elevated and could be a sign of early cancer. She lost her mother to cancer and two years ago because she is at a high risk, she had a preventive mastectomy after she found out she carried a mutation in a gene. Part of the op ed, she said its not possible on to remove all risk. I remain prone to cancer. I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I know my children will never have to say mom died of Ovarian Cancer. She went on to say quickly, regardless of the hormone replacements, im now in menopause and i will not have any more children and i expect physical changes, but i feel at ease with whatever will come not because i am strong, but its part of and nothing to be feared. Her mother died at age 56 and her aunt died of Breast Cancer. Its powerful that she talks about womens health, something that has been stigmatized in the past and uses her voice to talk about what she has gone through. It makes other women not feel so alone. We will talk about this more from a doctor to talk about the choices. It has to be a frightening thought. You are so prone to something that you have to do this. Its a choice that a lot of women have to make that decision every day. This is an education in addition learning more about being resilient. You have children and you want to be there and see your grandchildren and all of these things that you hope will happen in ones life, but its also the medical options available to other women who face the same decision. Talking about women, a classic movie, pretty woman which i love. There pretty women in it. Thank you, thank you. Its the 25th anniversary. That doesnt seem possible. And im not. They reunited the cast of richard gere and Julia Roberts. We loved each other immediately. It was a nice thing. To be honest, i didnt know if i was to go the movie yet. She is across the desk and bee are flirty, flirty, nice nice. He calls and its like hows it going . Im going yeah, yeah. And she is across the desk and takes a piece of paper. A post it. You remember more than i do. She turns it around and pushes it to me and it said please say yes. I remember that. It was so sweet and i said i just said yes. Im going to say who wouldnt say yes to Julia Roberts. Please say yes, of course. Its one of the movies we remember where we were. I was living in philadelphia and i went on a date to see pretty woman and i thought she was the most beautiful person. I had not seen mystic pizza. You see this person on the screen and you say are you kidding me . The chemistry. That was an amazing cast. We will have more on this tomorrow, but besides those two, jason alexander, amazing folks. Its a racy story. Its a racy story line and suddenly we are all like i want to be here. Its interesting because they released it from touch stone pictures and not exactly a feminist tale. I have to say i was in elementary or middle school. I am young. You got in to see it . Not in the theater, but i saw it at a party or somewhere. Its funny when you watched a movie that you didnt know, i had no idea what her living was. I still didnt know. I was like wait, what . It had that romance and im sure my parents were thrilled. Hey, lets watch pretty woman, kids. The facts of life at an early age. And after that we will wute will put in psycho. Milla kunis was a guest on the late, late show. If you saw into the woods, he was a great actor. He got her to talk about her new baby and james asked mila about whether she and ashton tied the knot. Whats he like as a dad . An amazing father. Her husband . Yes, my husband. Did you get married . Maybe. Maybe got married. You got married or not. Maybe. Thats a guess. Did you get married . What do you mean . Let me look at your hand. They got married everybody. Mr. And mrs. Kutcher. I love it. She terrific. His first night and hes got tom hanks and mila there together. Their daughter wyatt was born in october. You should never been afraid to ask. Its the british accent. And thats humor. When you are funny like that, you get away with a lot. Hes the that started it. He instigated it. I have got a gift for you. You have your bike and will get this for jenna. This is amazing for your baby. Its called a stroller trailer. Here it is. You bring your child along for a run or a jog. I believe it is in a testing phase. It leaves you hands free and arms free. You strap the baby in. I can see a small baby, but according to the details a 6yearold might be tough. Four to five years old. My child weighs 30 pounds. Im not putting a 30pound weight in that thing. They have a fundraise theyre plans to start early this summer within three months. Look at that little boy. Thats an adult. The amazing thing, the 4yearold to be squished in that, it looks like the egg that lady gaga was in. For a small baby. I like to see my baby in front of me. We live in new york city. You see them. Its hard to hear from behind. The physics of it. There have been times in new york city where the light will change and a car will come. The child rides on a bake with you. They are behind you. Im scared of that. This wont be coming in. Thanks for nothing. Like a 45 pound weight the momentum you try to stop. She lands into me. Its good for women who look like that who are in great shape. You know what would be good for that. Put wrangler in that and take him for a run. Hes getting big too though. The interesting thing is, we had a horrible winder, but the Silver Lining is we havent had much in the way of weather. We had no tornados and the previous record was march 1969 when the first tornado occurred march 23rd. We have beaten that and we will see. The average for the 20 years in march 78 last year. Surprising news from Angelina Jolie and a new blood test that can prevent the overprescribing of antibiotics. Heres dr. Debbie. I had it before. We will call her dr. Debbie. She said it was okay. An assistant professor at the school of medicine. Good to see you both. Lets start off with the news breaking with Angelina Jolie. She wrote the op ed piece with preventive surgery. What is this procedure . How dangerous is it or not . Why did she do it . Its not so much that the surgery is dangerous per se, but unlike the removal of the breasts thats very visible. This is invisible. Its inside, but much more impactful on health. When you have the ovaries removed, you are menopausal. You are post menopausal after the surgery. She had genetic markers for breast and ovaries and a strong Family History. This is a big move on her part, but her thinking was im at risk for Ovarian Cancer unless i do this. She had tests with increased inflammation. That suggested that risk was increasing. Would there be other options . There. There forms of hormonal treatment and frequent medical followup. If Ovarian Cancer develops, we dont have effective treatments and no other option is as decisive as this one. Genetic testing is a preventable method. How can we know if it really works . Is it good . They can tell you about the risk of developing cancer. It cant tell you for sure. She has a mutation. That doesnt mean she would definitely get it, but it increases the risk. One of the important things is after she had her double mastectomy, she wrote her piece and the number of women who got evaluated doubled. It doesnt mean they have to have surgery but to talk about the options and risks. When you think about how many lives that saves. Hopefully this will do the same. Talking about it is good. We need to know the reliability of the test and its good and there has to be something you can do with the information. In this case there was. Lets go to antibiotics. Doctors are prescribing them and dont know what they are looking for. There is a blood test to help with this. The data is there and most of us if we have symptoms, we want to get something. The problem with that is if people get antibiotics, they dont work against viruses. You are healing, but the problem is that if you take antibiotics unnecessarily and the bacteria can develop resistance. They fight the antibiotics in the future. They stop working in the future. When will we see this test . What they have done is used a bunch of tests that are available and combined them to say if you have this pattern, its bacterial and you dont need antibiotics. We were talking about the fact that this decision is made by doctors and patients tens of thousands of times every day. Im coughing and do i need antibiotics. Unless this is easy and inexpensive, will it be ready for prime time. I dont know what the cost will be. There is a strategy and if you think you might need an antibiotic, dont fill it unless. Thats a close upon approximatation to what this test will give us. This is it. Allergy season. Every year for the last five years this is the worst allergy season ever. Your head is going to explode. There will be mucous everywhere. You know who i blame . You. We had a terrible winder and we get the allergies. How bad is this season . Its hard to know for sure, but with the amount of snow its i wet winter, it will be worse. Yes its als fault. Do we do anything to prepare . If you are prone to allergies, you might start antihistamines and decongest ants earlier. It used to be by injection, but its under the tongue. It will be bad. You can look at your home. You can take out the heating and the ac. When you change, there is a lot of dust and mold that accumulates. When you switch you blow that out. Its penitentiary to clean those things. When i heard about this book i thought he wrote about fashion. You didnt. I didnt. Fashion comes with me wherever i go, but 29 years and my ten years as a mentor on 13 seasons in ten years on the runway. There is a lot to talk about. People dont realize you are an academic. You didnt come to this lately. No. How difficult was it making that transition from the world of academia to television. When i became involved i was a consultant. I wasnt tended to be on air. My role was in the vocabulary and the producers looked at me and said we need someone to go into the work room to ask the designers questions. I never dreamed that the foodage would show me. As long as they have the designers responding, no one needs to hear my voice and see me. I never expected to be on air and who knew we would have another season. For me i was interacting the way i did with my students. Its wonderful what you do for the people on the show and behind the scenes. What does it do for you to be a mentor and a teacher . If you are not should you you love the trend, accessories are a great way to try it without spending a ton of money. Add a bag or shoes and tassels. You add them on to the side of your bag and give a fun accessory. These shoes are my favorites. They are so tremendous. You can wear them on the dress or its all about the 70s. Absolutely. Shes also going to talk about the news of Angelina Jolie which well talk about in just a second. Okay. You made news yesterday, missy. I knew you would. Okay i dont know how to describe what happened yesterday and neither can our viewers. I think there was some horror going on. But our Facebook Page reacted. It exploded because they knew that regis was coming. Regis, when he shows up things change. He changes the room absolutely. So we did the twizzler challenge. You did the twizzler challenge with matt all for autism and you challenged reege igsgisregis. I guess we could call it memorable. Go. I cant. I cant. Shes closing in on me. Im staying right here. Shes getting close oh my gosh. Reege, youre not even doing any work. Shes doing all the work. Oh oh hoda. I didnt know what to do i was panicking oh, my god you know what . Usually its like and then he just kept coming. He was talking about how big my mouth was. Regis mouth is coming at you it please dont show it again. He really was enjoying himself. He says i got the shot im going to take it. Look at you. Thats what you do when youre kissing back. What am i going to do . I was trying to get back up but there wasnt room her lipstick was all over regis face and you youre still flummoxed. Regis was a good sport. Joy is, too. To have his way with you like that. Let me tell you, regis does change a room. When he walked into the place yesterday, the guy is instant energy. And hes such fun. So i got to challenge two people, and this is who i challenged. And i hope they take me up on it because its very important. Blake shelton and adam levine. They have a bromance already, allegedly. The inquirer says theyre not close anymore. That could be kind of fun. Regis challenged joy and don rickles which would be hysterical. All right. So there was some news this morning in the New York Times, and thats not usually in the editorial or opinion page isnt where you read about Angelina Jolie, but she penned an editorial or an opinion story. And she decided to look how beautiful she is. Right, to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. She tested positive for the brca1 gene. Which her mom and grandmother died of right . Her mom died of ovarian. So she had her breasts removed first, and then she went back and decided after getting some tests that showed she may show signs of getting Ovarian Cancer she removed her ovaries and fallopian tubes. She wrote something interesting. She said it is not possible to remove all risk and the fact is i remain prone to cancer. I feel feminine and grounded in the choices i am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say mom died of Ovarian Cancer. And you could tell i mean her mom died at 49. 49 years of old. Of Ovarian Cancer. And they were very very close. Yeah. And you know look there are people on different sides of the issue who talk about whether or not you should remove healthy body parts at the time. None of their business. Its her body. Right. We talk all about feminism dont we about our right to choose for ourselves what we want. That was such a personal and i think brave decision that she made. And based on science, too. You know what i mean . Yes. So she did it based it on all the right things. When she found out she may be prone to have Ovarian Cancer. She wrote this. I called my husband in france who was on a plane within hours. The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You no he what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing and it is peaceful. Interesting, polarizing. Yeah. Maybe because it separates you from i dont know. Thats interesting. Ovarian cancer well you know its deadly. It kills about 14,000 women every year. And we have dr. Natalie azar coming on in a little bit. I think a lot of women feel like i have a lot of history, what should i do . Shell answer all those questions. There was no test you could take in the past so women would just well my mom and grandmother died from it not even knowing what the odds are that people would make that choice and thats their choice to make. And when you go into the doctor for Something Like that they ask you about Family History. Yet they tell you that its not one of the factors that determines whether or not youre going to get cancer. Its very confusing. And maybe natalie can clear up some of that. Yeah. Okay. Yes. Angelina is a beautiful woman. Now were going to talk about pretty woman. Its hard to believe it really has been 25 years since that movie debuted, and it almost didnt get made. Matt sat down with the cast. Was that not a fascinating interview . It was awesome. It was richard gere. And at the time there was a 21yearold named Julia Roberts who apparently this movie was supposed to start off about some sort of a drug like a drug addict. Like a dark serious movie. It turned out to be more of a romcom. Gary marshall walks into a room and changes it. Gary introduced Julia Roberts to richard gere to see if there was any chemistry. They sat opposite each other at richards desk. All right, lets listen. We met gary brought me to meet richard. I dont think so. He did. To new york. I cant believe this is so important to me and you not remembering this. No ill tell you the part that i do remember. This was important to me. I just remember you sitting across from my desk. Gary brought me there, and he said richard, julia. Julia, richard. Ill see you guys later, and he walked out. And left you two alone. I was so mesmerized, i dont remember gary. I just remember the girl. And yeah we loved each other immediately. So it was a nice thing. But i to be honest i was still i didnt know if i was doing this movie yet. Shes across from my desk were getting to know each other, were flirtyflirty, nicenice. And he calls up and its kind of like hows it going . And im going, yeah. Yeah. And shes across the desk. And she takes a piece of paper. And shes writing something on it, postit. You remember more than i do. She turns it around and she pushes it to me and said, please say yes. I remember that. It was so sweet. And i just said yes. I love hearing stories like that. You know the back story is so interesting. I love that. They had instant chemistry. I think they still do. I do, too. A lot has happened. That was two marriages ago. Lots happened in our lives since then. Well have, of course more of the reunion tomorrow. Yeah. On today. We have a couple of shoutouts. You think it must be a problem with your thyroid. It is a standard test. There is no benefit in screening someone who does not show symptoms. Here to talk about that is nbc news medical contributor. But first were going to take a minute to talk about the news that broke overnight regarding angelina joelies latest surgery. Her mom died of it when she was 49. She was diagnosed and passed away seven years later. Nice to see you. So Angelina Jolie made the statement she was going to remove her tubes and ovaries, were you surprised fwha decision . Not at all. In fact as i said this morning, i think it was always her intention to go ahead and the removal of the ovaries and fa lobian tubes. And what she did in the two years is basically all of the appropriate surveyance that means doing pelvic ultra sounds once a year getting the blood test a very close followup with her gyn and oncologist who made a recommend togs have them removes. Some people may have a Family History of Breast Cancer but they may not have tested positive for that gene. Does that mean that they too, should look into that possibility or not . There are a to you different syndromes that carry a risk of Ovarian Cancer. The one were talking about is the breast and ovarian Hereditary Cancer syndrome. If you have a positive history of Breast Cancer in your family you should certainly be tested. But we dont recommend screening for the general population because the numbers actually quite low. It is less than 1 in general population. Wow. And one of the side effects is it brings on on sets menopause. Yes. Why are women so terrified of menopause . Cave women had it. I know. As you said before of course its a natural part of getting older, menopause is. But menopause is associated with two significant risks and that is cardiovascular disease and off the yoesteoporosisff the yoesteoporosis osteoporosis. And the earlier you have it, of course, the lower your bone density will be and the higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Can you do things about that. Absolutely. Most women are candidates for hormone replaceme in. T therapy. We started about how we gain weight later in life. Is that genetic . Ill blame it on my thyroid. Who should be checked out . Whose thyroid should be checked . Anyone that is pregnant or planning to be pregnant should get tested. Thyroid disorder and pregnancy can cause pregnancy complications. Anyone with symptoms of a low functioning thyroid or a high functioning thyroid. What are the symptoms . Think about the thyroid gland as the metabolic certainty of your body. When its running low, you feel sluggish, tired, you gain weight, cold all the time your hair is dry, skin is dry. When its too high its the opposite. You get hot quickly, heart rate may be up you may be losing way, you may have diarrhea everything is revved up. I screen for thyroid all the time. Im a rheumatologist. This is one of most common causes. I tend to not want to screen in people who are not showing any symptoms. Why . And thats sort of the basis of the task force recommendation. Based on no evidence for or against screening that it actually reduces mortality in the end. You think about it. The value of the Screening Test is that youre actually making a meaningful change in someones life. They found no evidence to suggest that. And the problem is that without symptoms abnormal blood tests are just that. Thank you. Youre so smart. Thank you so much.
