This is the book that a lot of celebrities would like to write but have no guts to do it. New unrest and chaos in the Missouri City once again sparked by the Police Shooting of Michael Brown. For the First Time Police were backed up by members of missouris National Guard. But the troops kept their distance from the protesters. This as attorney general eric holder prepares to travel to ferguson to meet with investigators and community leaders. Well talk to Michael Browns parents in a moment. But first nbcs ron allen is in ferguson. Good morning to you. Good morning to you, matt. Yes, police say they were targeted by a small criminal element using the protest as cover. They made 31 arrests. There is that new twist. Many were from out of town, they say, from as far away as california and new york. Police rush in. A strong show of force. Firing tear gas to disburse a huge crowd. Making dozens of arrests. Police track down, they say, when their units came under attack. I listened under the radio and heard the officers who were under gunfire. We cant have this. Police tried yet another tactic. With the National Guard as backup. Curfew. More officers on foot, trying to give the protesters a designated space. These are the rules. You can march a quarter mile in that direction, a quarter mile in that direction. This is the stretch of road where some of the worst violence has happened in the past few days. The protesterss loudest demand, arrest under Darren Wilson who shot and killed brown. Why hasnt he been processed like anybody else . Like anybody else. Thats all were asking, man. If he is so innocent, what do he have to be afraid of the law for . He is the law. Earlier browns family released reports of an autopsy they commissioned. Graphic details. Six gunshot wounds, two to the head. All of these gunshot wounds were survivable except for the one in the top of the head when it went through the brain. While browns family claims he was surrendering, police insist he physically assaulted the officer. It may take months to decide whether to charge the officer. We want to do it as expeditiously as possible, but we dont want to do it quickly. We want it to be very thorough. Now offering support to the brown family is the mother of Trayvon Martin writing, i wish i had a word of automatic comfort, but i dont. Police in ferguson fight an uphill battle to keep the peace. And police seem very focused on as much intelligence as they can about the protest. One reason they may have arrested so many people. Names, addresses and phone numbers to follow up on. Matt . Ron allen, thank you very much. Michael browns parents joining us with their attorney. Good morning to all of you. Mr. Brown and ms. Mcspadden, my condolences on the loss of your son. Thank you. A 10th straight night of violence in ferguson. The National Guard is there. Still the violence ended just hours ago. What will bring peace to the streets of ferguson . Justice. Justice will bring peace, i believe. Only if that justice results in the arrest or charges being filed against officer wilson . Is that what its going to take . Yes. Him being arrested, charges being filed, and a prosecution. Him being held accountable for what he did. Mr. Brown, do you have faith in the system in this matter . Yes, i do. Do you think its worked so far . No. So what gives you the faith that it will work eventually . Eventually justice will prevail. I want to ask you about the autopsy that was conducted on behalf of your family by the doctor. I dont want to go into great detail. But we do know he was shot six times. Did you learn what you think you needed to know from that autopsy that gives you a clearer picture of what happened to your son that night . No. What more do you need to know . Why . Why . Why . What was the cause for that . Excessive force. The Excessive Force. Unnecessary. I want to ask you nobody deserves that. Let me ask you about that force. Ben, let me bring you in on this one. The st. Louis county prosecutor said Police Shootings are different from other shootings because officers by law are authorized to use force. And he said you have to determine whether the level of force in each case was appropriate or excessive. Ben, based on what you saw in that autopsy performed by dr. Bodden, are you confident that this was Excessive Force . I think clearly this was Excessive Force, matt. In fact, you look at the autopsy and the witness accounts, when he put his hand up and surrendered. And all the witnesses say police continued to shoot, its going to be an issue that comes before this prosecution, praying that he is arrested, matt. The jury is going to have to decide what is the amount of Necessary Force to use. Because all the witnesses said it seemed like an executionstyle murder. And thats why there is so much unrest, to say you cant do this to our children in broad daylight. Ms. Mcspad spadden and mr. Brown, you say you were looking for justice for your son. Do you think this continuing violence in the streets of ferguson night after night runs the risk of overshadowing that search for justice. In some ways, does it detract from justice for your son . No. No. I think that it does somewhat. Because it is a distraction. But we wont lit it distract us. We have to remain focused and strong and the violence needs to stop. Maybe they will remain the locals. We need to keep the focus on Michael Brown jr. Thats what we need to keep the focus on, Michael Brown jr. Mr. Brown, ms. The flames burning near a Propane Company leading to the evacuation of 13,000 homes and businesses. Its not a lot of great news. Theres no relief in sight. We have more rain to talk about. Well show you what were looking at. Just to the east we have monsoonal moisture making its way into the southwest. Thats not getting into where they need the help the most. We have a high fire danger in central and Southern California. And adding to that, we have extreme to exceptional drought for the entire state of california. Theres no relief in sight. And the other big story were watching in the southeast, this upper level High Pressure going to be watching temperatures rising up into the upper 90s from oklahoma city, st. Louis, thursday, 95 in atlanta. 92 in houston and atlanta. With humidity levels that are going to bring the heat indexes well into 100. It will top out by friday. A lot of dangerous heat, especially for the elderly and the young throughout a good portion of the southeast and the plains. South Pasadena Police arrested two teenagers monday who they say planned to kill three Staff Members and gun down as many students as possible. The suspects did not have any weapons, but police say they were trying to get them. A School Staffer noticed something suspicious and thats when he called police. School is scheduled to resume on thursday. A frightening scene in los angeles monday night when an suv plowed through a crowded pizza shop. This happened at a little cesars in pequoima. And for so many other shows throughout his long career. The voice as iconic as the show itself. For 38 seasons, don pardo introduced saturday night live viewers to some of comedys biggest names. Thanks for joining us live. Reporter pardos voice was a staple on the show. Creator Lorne Michaels noted that every year the new cast couldnt wait to hear their names be said by him. Ladies and gentlemen, Brian Williams reporter our own Brian Williams got the pardo treatment in 2007. Lorne michaels always said its live from new york, but its not really an event. Its not a show. It doesnt come alive until we hear the voice of don pardo. Reporter pardos career spanned over 70 years. He landed his first job at nbc as a radio announcer in 1944. He went on to have a lifelong contract with the new york. Thats when radio programming was at its peak. Reporter pardo moved from radio to that new medium, television. And now don pardo, introduce todays contestants. This is dr. Elliot stier, the winn winner. Reporter in 1963, pardo broke the news to wnbc tv viewers in new york about the tragedy in dallas. President kennedy was shot today just as his motorcade in downtown dallas. Reporter his voice turned up just about everywhere, its that saturday night live intro its saturday night live reporter that generations of fans will remember. Theres been one constant on that show, and its the don pardo voice. Everybody knows that voice. Its been so closely associated with the show. Its going to be a big loss. And what a voice it is. A very good morning to you, it is 7 26 im laura garciacannon. A Small Plane Crash has killed a pilot in the north bay. Last night, the pilot reported engine trouble near novato. Tried to make an Emergency Landing at knox field, but did not make it. Authorities tell us it exploded on impact about 15 mimes west of the airport. The crash started a 40 acre brush fire which crews put out this morning. The pilot was flying from brookings, oregon, to san carlos. He was believed to be the only one on board. Today San Jose City Council Members will likely put the finishing touches on a plan to turn hotels into homes for people who dont have anywhere to live. Council approved the idea two weeks ago but will take a final vote today. Under the plan, nonprofits could get multiyear leases on hotel rooms which could then be temporarily used by the citys homeless population. Reporters say the plan could provide people with transitional housing they need to get back on their feet. One thing thats great this morning is the weather. A total stranger peering into a womans bedroom. She now knows what he looks like. She hopes by releasing the tape she and the police can find out who he is. You know that eerie feeling that somebodys watching you . In this case, it was more than a hunch. A peeping tom caught on tape eyes right up to the window of a womans bedroom. To all of a sudden realize that theres been someone watching you and you dont know for how long, its incredibly scary. Reporter the victim doesnt feel safe sharing her identity with the peeping tom still on the loose. He seems to know when im home and when im not. The incident when we caught him on camera, i had literally just got home maybe ten minutes before. Reporter she and her neighbors say they started noticing strange things around their bright neighborhood a few months ago. I heard little noises. But when i would look, it was like houdini. Hed be gone. Reporter she thinks her boyfriend even saw him one night. A man saying he was looking for his puppy. Thats when they decided to set up cameras. When she was in the shower feet away, this is what those cameras caught. And i saw that it was a face. It was instantly i wanted to throw up. And it was a moment of panic. Reporter with no one in the bedroom, the man leaves. But not before giving the camera a clear view. A picture his victims hope people will share on social media and that someone will recognize. This creep, this man took that from me, the sense of home i had in my apartment. I dont know if i could get that feeling back, that sense of security. I do want to go home. I miss being home. I miss sleeping in my own bed. Reporter police have includ increased patrols in the area. By the way, this wasnt a sophisticated surveillance system. A camera for 150 bucks and app on her phone. That is so creepy. Since they got a clear picture, they should get him quickly. Lets get a check of the weather from al. Im in florida where marksmen like to take aim at these. Theyre called clay pigeons. But now theres a new twist on this sport where folks are taking aim on drones could be illegal. Old school skeet shooting meets new world drones. But the faa says these shooted drone gatherings are illegal. An investigate came badge in hand who asked we not identify him as he was there to shut them down. The faa rules that you cannot use drones in a commercial process. Reporter a commercial process because shooters are charged a fee to participate. But organizers say the faa is overstepping its authority. Its a form of intimidation. Its bullying. Its trying to bluff people with sternly worded letters and the occasional fine to try to enforce something that they dont have the right to enforce. Reporter in march of this year, a federal judge did rule there was no enforceable faa rule on low altitude drones. Arent they just toys with batteries . Theyre not illegal drones in your mind . Absolutely not. Reporter shooting at drones that cost 45 to rebuild continues. At a nearby airstrip, pilots said they had no idea drones were aloft much less that anyone was shooting guns skyward. It concerns us because you dont know how long theyre going to be or how high. Reporter organizers of this event says nobody came forward and said shooting a gun in the air was a problem. But the faa says a drone is an aircraft and shooting at it poses a safety hazard. For now thats not stopping people from taking aim at a new target. That for some sportsmen has become a trophy unlike any other. Drones pull reporter marksmen say they like to shoot at drones because the pilot can fly them so erratically and that tests their skills. Eventually i hope we can say theres a way out of this stuff. I think this is a book that a lot of celebrities dream of writing, they fantasize about writing and dont have the guts to write. Whered you find the guts . You know, i spent my life in sports and entertainment and news and then in the entertainment side really kind of helping destroy people. I mean, thats what those shows were about. You die by drugs or get caught with drugs, thats the only time we brought up recovery. And so i thought if im going to write about by the way, i rip nobody more than myself in the book. You rip other people though. Youre tough on coworkers. I am. And sometimes coworkers can be tough. But i yeah. You know, i wrote the book so people could know that theres a way out. Even for me. Lets get to the elephant in the room. The voice mail, the scandal that brought you to a standstill. It was all about lets go get some drugs and hookers and whatever. You were extremely drunk when you left that. In a blackout. People who drink do stupid things. People who drink and go into a blackout really do stupid things. I think i might be the first person who has done that, by the way. Im sure. You write in the book there were no hookers, there was no sex, nobody got hurt, nobody had sex. As scandals go it seems lame. Although as Charlie Sheen told me later, that was an excellent effort, my man. The good news is none of that happened. And i still dont remember it. And the better news is it forced me to go get help. Thats the message of the book. You talk about your dad. Turns out pat obrien fit down well at the end of the bar where he was as well. You talk about the fact your drinking and drug use started with the scene in chicago. When i first started drinking, its fun. Ive drank with you. Yes, we have. Weve had fun. I was a fun guy at the table for awhile. Up until around 11 00. Then you go home and i stay out. And i got fascinated in chicago. But the drinking scene in the News Business is always good. Just because you have a few drinks doesnt mean youre an alcoholic. One for me was not too many and a thousand was not enough. And it seemed it started with the music scene but then your fame, the money, the access to the parties and celebrities fueled it. You talk about spiraling downward. Youre in an l. A. Lakers game one night and you run into your good friend and mine Maria Shriver and she screamed at you. She did. Mariah carey once grabbed me and said enough. I was down to 130 pounds. She said enough, enough. And maria who had been through this in her own family said youve got to take care of this. I had a lot of people on my side and still do. But the message is real. I had lunch the other day and was told theres a solution to all of this. Its the only disease that people dont admit they have. Four rehabs you mentioned. The last one at hazelton which is where Robin Williams went before his death. What worked the last time that didnt happen in the first three times . First time i didnt listen. Helicopters all over the place and howard stern playing the voice mail. Second time was about getting a suntan at betty ford. Third time i didnt care. But the fourth time when i got there i was almost dead. I mean, i almost flatlined on my own property in nantucket. I drank a lot that day. And they said, look, youre not going to live. Unless you change your life and take a good look at yourself, youre not going to live. Thats what i did. In the midst of your drinking and you write openly about this. You left your wife. And you say youre haunted by the guilt. And your son was there too. Broke his heart. Youre haunted by that decision to this day. Its shame and remorse. We still talk every day. Were raising a son together. But youre not yourself when youre at that stage of alcoholism. Your brain is telling you to do something you dont really want to do. You write you dedicate this book to shawn your son, i think hes 27 now. To shawn, this is who your daddy is. Managed to be a good father, you think . Im a great father. And you know that. So are you. We talk about fatherhood a lot. My dad when he was drinking in fact, he was always drinking. He would take me to the bars and i would go with him. And one day he came to me and said this is who your daddy is. He was a great story teller. But shawn knows who his daddy is. He knows im sober and great now. Its good to see you back. Now to a controversy in one School District in california pitting parents including supermodel Cindy Crawford against the government. Maria shriver has more. Good morning. Reporter good morni. Good morning to you. Cindy crawfords first job is being a mom to her teenage kids. When their school found dangerous chemicals inside a classroom, it started a debate around the country. Whats the best way to keep students safe . Do you feel its unhealthy to be in this school . I dont feel 100 safe. Reporter its the first day of school at malibu public high. But supermodel Cindy Crawford is keeping her kids home worried about a potential Health Threat inside the classrooms. Im frustrated and disappointed at the way this has been handled. Reporter it started when routine soil tests at the school found elevated levels of pcb, toxic chemicals often used in the window caulking of older schools. It can leech into dirt, dust, and air and can over time can cause cancer and immune system problems. Pcb disrupted the function of hormones in our bodies. Especially thyroid hormones. They can cause inability for children to perform well in school. Reporter when malibu teachers had worries about their health, they tested in ten random classrooms. Four came back over the federal limit for pcbs. Did you just assume the district and or your school would say let us get right on that, we want to clear it up. Dont worry. Absolutely. Reporter and the district says it is. The school is planning to remove the caulking in those four rooms. And do periodic monitoring of air and dust for pcbs in every classroom. It says so far tests show no elevated levels. But many parents feel thats not enough. The problem is for me is that they havent tested the source. Reporter so the malibu School District says we did test the air and the dust in the other classrooms and were good. Were going to take out the caulking in the four. Everything else is safe. Lets go to school. Right. And i think that air testing is a great piece of the puzzle. Unless theyre testing every day, how do i know every day its safe for my kid . Reporter some experts say while air and dust testing is a good way to determine pcb exposure, levels can vary week to week depending on conditions. In the shortterm it may be appropriate to do monitoring, but in the longterm, schools need to eradicate the pcbs from these building materials. Reporter and its not just in malibu. How to handle pcbs has become a National Controversy for schools. Under federal law, theyre not required to test for pcbs at all. Why wasnt there followup testing done reporter at a rally last week crawford offered to pay herself for all the caulk testing at malibu high. I look ten years down the line. What if my kid, god forbid, had a problem . How could i live with myself if i knew that it was a possibility and i still sent them to school there . Reporter in a statement the school says ensuring our students are safe and healthy is the first priority. And using federal epa standards, our schools are safe for students and employees. And the epa agreed. Saying the districts plan address this human exposure pathway of greatest concern. Namely air, dust, and soil. And until those tests show a problem, epa does not recommend additional testing of caulk. You have as of this morning decided to take your kids out. Are you out of this fight . Absolutely not. This is not a malibu issue. This is really an issue in a lot of older schools. I just think the laws need to be changed. Reporter well, crawford and hundreds of other parents Want Congress to require all schools built from the 50s through the 70s to test for pcb. How they fix the problem is still up to debate. The faa says the single engine plane was flying from brookings, oregon, to san carlos when it started having engine problems. We see a slow drive from san leandro all the way up towards the area, about 45 Miles Per Hour on average. God gave you a lot. You grew up singing in church. Your grandmother encouraged you to sing in church and your mom was the who got you to audition for idol. Oh, yeah. I always had a family full of support and still is. Thats what grew my talent. My grandmother had me rehearsing throughout the weeks and on sundays. My mother said whatever makes you happy is what i want you to do. So it was never anything that was forced. As long as youre happy. Watching you out there with the crowd, its almost like your career has been an affirmation. And you give that affirmation back to the people youre performing in front of. I feel like its a good connection. And i feel as though its probably because i came in the industry from different celebrities. We all got to grow and try. As you get into your 30s and 40s, it starts to change, become more personal. And by the time women are in their 50s and 60s, they take much more about spirituality and their friendships. Roughly three quarters of both men and women would not want their boss job. But if offered, the men would take it anyway. Fewer of the women would. Yes. Good news for bosses. Whereas financial reward and stability was more important to men. Which explains why more men would take the job. I would have thought family would fall in that top three. Although having children is a very important part of it. What was striking was that for women, it kept on coming back, this sense of purpose of having meaning in your life. If the single biggest gap was that, that did not rate as nearly high as it did for women. They rated Financial Stability number one, men did. You did ask women if its more important to enjoy what they do or make more money which was along the lines what you said. It was interesting.
